Tried this place because it's still relatively new and seemed popular! We came on a weeknight and it was relatively busy. We got seated right away for a table of two. Unfortunately during that evening, the restaurant's lights were flicking the whole time so it was a bit unpleasant. We ordered the stir-fried noodles with chicken, and a bowl of the beef noodle (knife cut) noodles with pickled vegetables. We brought the knife cut would make the noodles chewier but boy, were we wrong. The noodles were too soft and tasted a bit bland. Came here after the Mountain View Art & Wine Festival and ordered 2 soup noodle bowls, beef chow mein and an appetizer of popcorn chicken. The popcorn chicken came out during our eating of the main entrees and we had to return it as it was just warm. Our server returned it to the kitchen and returned later with a hotter chicken which we were used to. So why the 5 stars-well during our time there while waiting for our food, we observed a male employee wearing gloves remove a trash liner of trash behind the front counter. Wanting to see if he would continue to wear those same gloves, he not only removed them but proceeded to wash his hands before putting on a new pair of gloves! Tasty broth with the right kick. Really comforting during this winter season. Was excited to try some yummy hand pulled noodles and soup. Unfortunately my noodles were too chewy and rubbery. Surprisingly though they broke easily while I picked up with my chopsticks bc they were tangled in my bowl. The beef was okay, could have been more tender and more in quantity. We really enjoyed the light broth in the Lanzhou noodles soup and the large flat noodle was my favorite. It was the perfect texture and chewiness. The broth in the braised beef was very flavorful and hearty but I didn't enjoy the belt noodles as much. It felt a bit dough-y. We all were so full afterwards as the portion was huge. I don't know why people aren't raving about the spicy wontons. They are other worldly. The dough is fresh and pork filling is juicy and flavorful. The oil is more sweet than spicy and doesn't overshadow the wonton flavor. The wontons took this review from 3 to 4. They were on a whole other level than the beef noodle soup. The beef noodle soup was ok. The soup base imparted a decent flavor. The noodles were fresh. The meat was tender. There were good portions of meat and noodle. I was full. Had a late Valentine's Day lunch here today. Quiet and not too busy at 1pm, with nostalgic Chinese pop music playing in the background. We shared a beef hot oil noodle and added two eggs, a pork rou jia mo, and a fried squid appetizer. The squid was lightly battered, well-seasoned, and cooked just right for a good texture. With squid it can be easy to cook it unevenly since there are thicker and also thinner parts, but it was all good! The pork rou jia mo was good and juicy, but I prefer the cumin beef one more. Finally the beef hot oil noodle is definitely my favorite thing to get here now. I have liked the QQ noodle version before (their You Po Mian uses pork and is more garlicky). But the Ox9 version is great -- most notably the very fresh chili pepper flavor, but also the tender beef chunks, wide cut noodle, and lots of veggies. read more

My only minor complaint is that some pieces of meat were too lean and a bit tough. I usually get the Lanzhou hand pulled noodles but haven't tried it at this location yet. I had really high expectations for Ox9 because three new locations opened in the bay in the last two years. However, I must admit that I was disappointed. To begin with, the beef and sour vegetable soup noodle lacked the protein amount I was expecting. The soup was also not very hot. My friend ordered popcorn chicken, but it was bland and lacked any flavor. We were also disappointed to learn that they didn't have any additional sauces to add such as sweet and sour sauce or spicy mayo. All they had was vinegar and chili oil. On the positive side, the handmade noodles allow for personalization in terms of noodle thickness. I ordered a thin flat noodle, which I thought was fresh. These noodles do also soak up the soup incredibly fast. The restaurant is quite small, so be prepared to wait. We were able to secure the last table for four around 7 pm. Had dinner here last night: the braised beef bowl with small flat noodles, cucumber salad, and dumplings. The broth is subtle and deep and the texture of the noodles was perfect. We also really enjoyed the appetizers, the sauce that came with the dumplings was so good, I was dipping my all my proteins in it. This is a new restaurant in Castro; I appreciated the decor, there's interesting ambient lighting all around, and acoustic treatment on the ceiling, so the space feels warm and inviting. We always pass by the San Mateo location, but haven't had a chance to try it out, so today would finally be the day. Street parking was fairly easy on a Saturday evening. Walk in and the staff point to any open table to sit down at. You scan the QR code on the table to view their menu and place an order. The only thing we knew about OX9 was they are known for their hand-pulled noodles and something we always try to find are some good QQ/Biang-biang noodles. Here at OX9, it wasn't exactly what we were looking for, but it's close. I ordered the Lanzhou Handpulled Noodle Soup with Large Flat noodles. I should've gotten either regular round or medium round because those are the ones that I'd expect in a noodle soup and flat or wider noodles are better for dry-style dishes in my opinion. That's on me so I'll try not to be as hard on the dish. Soup itself was clear and tasted "clean" with a bit of beefy-ness, but not a strong enough flavor profile. Chili oil in it ads a nice kick, but the star of this was the sliced beef as it was so tender it basically melted in your mouth. My fiancée got the Chili Oil Noodles (Wide Noodles) and mentioned the oil tasted like it was stale (maybe left out for too long?) and she needed to add a few more heaping spoonfuls to round it out. It didn't have the chew of a biang biang noodle, but got the job done. To pay, you go up to the register and let them know your table number. Simple enough. Overall, a quick and easy spot that I can imagine being a local's regular spot after work or if they're hungry for some noodles. read more

You get more of the chewiness of the handmade noodles from the larger noodles. It was really good. Their service was super friendly too. It was our first and they were so understanding and patient.
