But there were as attentive as could be! Wifey had the oxtails, and they were nice, soft and rich! The plantanos that accompanied them were a nice, sweet contrast, along with the coconut rice! We chose OYO because of the high rating. This Place has a nice vibe, menu has very good variety, and it was beautifully decorated for the holidays. From the hostess to our server, Roberto, and his assistants were very attentive. 5 stars for service. Now the food; we ordered the fried calamari, Mac & Cheese, calypso Cerviche, jerk chicken, Oyo pot roast, and seafood paella. The two dishes we agreed a 5 stars is the jerk chicken (very juicy and flavorful) and Mac & Cheese (cheesy w mushrooms and not dry when cooled down). other dishes are good but nothing to brag about so it gets 4 stars. The Oyo pot roast; I normally like to eat salty food but the Oyo pot roast was extremely salty that we couldn't finish up the meat on the small portion. We visited on a Thursday night which was busy but not super busy. They have indoor and outdoor seating. We were seated right away no wait. I got a prickly pear margarita which was very tasty but had a lot of ice. The beer selection wasn't accurate on the menu. I was hoping for sum rum specialty cocktails as they have a lot of different rums. They bring out pickled veggies which I am a fan of so that was a nice addition. We started with the beef patties very crispy ton of flavor. The bread piece is huge it's warm very big portion more than needed for two people. We also got the rolls which were soft not much flavor on either one just tasted like white bread. It was good for dipping in the sizzling shrimp oil. I like the flavor of the shrimp they are pretty spicy in my opinion but flavor was good. The ribs were my favorite part fall off the bone with tons of flavor in each bite will get those again. Oyo is a very pleasant restaurant. The open and vibrant atmosphere felt welcoming. I enjoyed the beef patties as an appetizer. The flavor and presentation was lovely. I had the Jerk Pork shoulder for my entree and I was not impressed. The pork shoulder lacked the flavor and spice I was expecting. The rice and beans were oily and the sweet plantains were pretty mushy and not fresh. I will say the service was excellent and my server made recommendations and gave me a sample of the oxtail stew. I dined here with a group on a Saturday evening and had a pleasant experience. All the tables filled up by around 6:30, and there was even a line outside. So I suggest making a reservation if you're coming during peak dinnertime. Food: 3.5/5 I ordered a couple of items for the table, so I got to try several dishes. The beef patties were delicious, and the goat curry was flavorful. The oxtail wasn't as tender as I had hoped. The paella was fine but not too memorable. Went during dinner time, super lively place that plays live music. Great for the vibes but definitely not for chatting as the music is pretty loud. I liked the free pickled assortments, it has a sweet tint to it. I got jerk tofu, potaro punch, and jerk pork shoulder for dinner. The jerk tofu was delicious and the sauce helped carry it through as I felt the tofu wasn't marinated too heavily. The tofu was cooked well and definitely would order it again. The jerk pork shoulder to me was okay, not something I would order again. The pork shoulder was cooked perfectly however lacked all the flavor needed to carry it. I'm use to eating a lot of "jerk" dishes and felt this one lacked the flavor profile that are associated with jerk such as pimento smoke, bonnet peppers, and a nice earthy kick to it. I did like the topper they added on top and if they just drenched it, maybe would have been better for me. Service felt slow for me, asked for topped water glass however ended up finishing my dish then waited for bill and only got my water topped shortly after the bill (a solid 15+ minutes). I had 2 individual check in and I requested for water to be refilled however seemed my server was very busy. Possibly better table management might help this on busy days. I highly recommend the jerk pork shoulder which is seasoned well and cooked perfectly. It comes with what I call dirty rice and beans and a side of plantains that are heavenly. This is my third time here (coming from Fremont) and it's my favorite restaurant in Pleasanton. I leave full and in a good mood! Oyo is one of those places that delivers every single time. I've been coming here consistently for the last five years, and the quality, flavors, and overall experience have never wavered. The service is fantastic, and a special shoutout to Leicester - an incredible bartender. The drinks are flavorful, strong, and perfectly balanced, which is exactly what you want. You can tell real care goes into both the cocktails and the food. Favorite dishes that never miss: the island salmon, run down fish, jerk chicken (always with a side of coconut rice), and the pumpkin soup, which is pure comfort in a bowl. And do not skip dessert - the banana bread pudding with banana ice cream is absolutely to die for. The vibes are great, the food is consistently excellent, and it genuinely brings me joy knowing Oyo not only survived but thrived during COVID. The pholourie fritters were great tho, accompanied by a tamarind and mango chutney. DRINKS: 4.75/5.0 caiparinha was very strong and very good. Beer selection was ok. Our first time trying Guyanese food and it's great. Veg street food doubles with jackfruit, snap pea fritters, jerk tofu, tostones, and pigeon pea rice for the kids were all unique and good. Staff is very friendly and helpful with the menu options (they can make a lot more items vegetarian than listed on the menu). Cafe con leche was incredible. The sizzling jerked shrimp were cooked perfectly and the spice and flavor balance were spot on. The Trinidadian channa was flavorful, but could probably add a side of bread to soak up the sauces. The Guyanese cookup rice was disappointing. The dish was presented well, but the meat completely missing and was predominantly bone and gristle. Came here last night for our anniversary dinner. I made a reservation and put in notes that we were celebrating. I was hoping they would put us somewhere a bit more quiet or private. It was too loud to hold a conversation where we were seated. Our waiter and servers seemed new. Food was still delicious. This time I tried the jerk pork shoulder, Pholourie, and guava juice. The pork was very tender and flavorful. The Cuban rice and beans paired well with it. Pholourie was similar to a falafel ball and the mango chutney was really good. There were outdoors heaters, but not very warm. The food was exceptional. Highly recommend the pork shoulder. The regular lunch portion was very generous. Octopus salad was also really good. I would order both these things again. We ordered the ceviche as well, which was tasty but a small portion, only about four bites. Also, I got a POG drink, passionfruit, orange and guava juice. The first and most recent time I had Oyo was as take-out during the pandemic. I remember liking it well and thinking I'd like to eat there in the dining room sometime. After walking by the place nearly once a week for the last few months, I finally stopped in with my family. The reception was quick and courteous. Seating on the patio was great, even on a December evening. Oyo has things arranged right and heaters pointed correctly to make it a great experience. Service was reasonably quick, given how busy it was. Food came out as it was ready and still hot. The real bummer here was the food, though. Given the more than a thousand ratings averaging 4.5 stars, I was surprised. The dough balls and sauces appetizer (I forget the actual name) were great. The baked mac and cheese was a letdown. It had little flavor and seemed to be made with pasta rather than macaroni. Some salt would have helped a lot. The channa was OK. There was a lot of butter/oil in it. There was some spice, which is what saved it. The vegan paella, which should have been the star of our dishes, lacked spices and seasoning like the mac and cheese. It also had a lot of oil, so much so that it was all that remained on the palate after a bite. The best part of the paella was the crispy rice around the edge at the bottom. Obviously, I'm in the minority here with my experience. Maybe I'll decide to stop in again sometime for a third impression. read more
