PJ Clarke's is about as close to Lincoln Center without being in it. It's a solid choice for a dinner before a Lincoln Center concert. The food is tasty with a few standouts, service prompt and the ambiance is welcoming with a large range of clientele from those attending concerts to people just getting a drink with friends at the bar. It feels like a bar with restaurant seating and that's pretty much on point. The strong choices are the drinks, the oysters and the burgers, reflecting it's bar origins. I've read that people say this is one of the best burgers in the city. It's a fine burger but you have to get out more if you think it's one of the best. Now I usually have it and really like it, but let's be real here. Other entrees that are good include the fish and chips and crispy onion rings, which I think are far better than the somewhat pedestrian French fries. In all the times I've been here, we never had dessert. Coffee is fresh and strong. I suggest you get a reservation for dinner because it does get crowded. Overall a solid, good choice. read more

We stopped into P.J. Clarke's in mid-December following a Christmas show at Lincoln Center, and we were pleased to find the restaurant very much open and buzzing with activity, even after 10PM. I've been going to Clarke's since my first visit to the 3rd Ave location oh, sometime around 1975. I used to hang out at the front mini-raw bar and have a few beers and an order of Chili. Well, that was 50 years ago, times have changed, the Chili is (sadly) gone, but the vibe overall has not changed too much, even at this much newer location. I ordered the bacon cheeseburger, called "The Cadillac" while my wife, who was not too hungry, chose the Chicken Vegetable Soup. Service overall was very good, and while the soup was not our favorite (see the sad-looking photo, as it was placed on our table), the Cheeseburger held up Clarke's reputation as having on of the best burgers in town. Just to make sure I am not crazy, I looked up a few other reviews of the Chicken Soup. One online reviewer wrote exactly what I was thinking: "I got the chicken soup. This chicken soup looked honestly like if I waited a few minutes without touching it, the server would think I ate it already and what's left is just what I left behind. Take a look at the photo. It's not even filled halfway to the middle of the bowl. For $17 you should have full bowl of soup. It was literally 6 sips of soup and the entire thing was finished." So, I would urge the Clarke's folks to look into this Soup situation. I am not some "Large Portion" fanatic. In fact, we dined at Le Bernardin for lunch this same day. Other than that soup issue... P.J. Clarke's was all good! It was good to be back and I will keep returning to 3rd Ave, Lincoln Center, and even the new midtown spot. read more

This is the second time I've been here. The first time I got macaroni despite everyone getting burgers. This time I got the burger, that is supposed to be one of the best in the city. The good:seated quickly on a Saturday morning; jukebox in the bottom floor, our waiter was at tentative. We had a reservation for 12:30 on a Saturday for a party of six including a 7yo and 9yo. We arrived a little early and were seated quickly. From there, everything went downhill. Everything was extremely slow and our meal took two hours (it wasn't a long, leisurely, multi-course meal). The food was ok, nothing special. The drinks were pretty good but didn't seem like they had much alcohol in them. We would've ordered more, but we rarely saw our server. The rest of this review is from the perspective of our 9yo daughter: The orange juice tasted disgusting, the kids menu was lacking, the chicken tenders were terrible (overly dry on the outside and a little wet on the inside. The butter was too sweet and partially melted - we ate it because we were so hungry. My sister ordered a hamburger with no cheese but it came with cheese and she doesn't like cheese. I remember eating at the Upper East location, a few years ago, for lunch. So we decided to give this one a try for dinner. While the location is right in the heart of Lincoln Center, the food fell flat. Our waiter Chris, from the south, was the best thing about our meal. We started with the Korean Sticky Ribs, which fell right off the bone but needed more flavor in the Gochujang BBQ Sauce. The Gentleman's Chopped Steak tasted like spicy, lean sausage molded into a patty and then simmered in a burnt Worcester sauce. My wife's Newport Steak was cooked properly, but was tough. I honestly think the cook cut with the grain of the meat, instead of against it (the proper way). Maitre De Butter was mostly herbs, and some butter. I will say that the Frites were an almost exact clone of McDonalds; nice job. While on the other hand, the Rosti Potatoes were dense, odd flavored belly bombs. We looked at the dessert menu, but the four choices didn't entice us. Which was a good thing, since I really didn't want to spend any more money here. I tried this place due to the proximity of the Lincoln Center and it was okay! I would say that biggest reason why I gave this place 3 stars is due to the service. The food was perfectly fine. We had a reservation and one of the members of the party was vegan. We called beforehand to see what vegan options they had and the lady said, "This isn't a vegan restaurant," instead of even trying to see what was on the menu and if anything can be done. Wow, I had no idea P.J. Clarke's that highlights their "fresh-off-the-dock oysters and burgers" was not vegan. How silly of me. I didn't expect them to have a wonderful extensive vegan menu, but her response and utter lack of accommodation was pretty disappointing and telling of the service at this restaurant. I've been to steak houses that try to put some vegetables on a plate together, or if they truly do not offer any accommodations (which is entirely okay by the way), they do it a professional and kind way, unlike P.J. Clarke's. My table ordered the ENGLISH PEA & CUCUMBER HUMMUS, which was delicious and the CHEESESTEAK EGG ROLLS, which also were great. Someone in my table had an egg allergy, so they asked if the dipping sauce with the egg rolls had egg and the waiter said "I don't know " and didn't bother to check lol. The oysters were also good and fresh. Overall the food, was pretty good! My table liked the Cadillac Burger, the fish and chips, and the summer salad! Ambience reminds me of like the old school Italian places with the checkered, red and white picnic table tablecloths. We ordered our entrees and unfortunately they took a little while. We ordered 3 burgers and one Connecticut Lobster Roll (on the menu as $35). We received our appetizer - chicken wings and a bread loaf very quickly, and both were delicious. But after that, the burgers and lobster roll were close to a one-hour wait. After waiting so long and being nervous to miss our show at David Geffen Hall, we asked our server if our food was almost ready. He said 5 minutes. After those five minutes passed, he came back and said there were no more rolls for the lobster roll, and would I accept a lettuce wrap. I said yes because of time. But seriously...how are you going to advertise a lobster roll if you're out of rolls? And what happened in our almost hour wait? Did a large party come in and order lobster rolls and get served before us? Seems like a glaring oversight for such a high-priced menu item. The food arrived another 10 minutes after this discussion, and said lobster wrap was literally lobster on lettuce. No fries. We had barely any time to eat and asked for the check immediately. PJ Clarke's hadn't amended the price of the lobster roll - in fact, they charged us $40 for it, and, sadly, we didn't have time to argue about the bill. There was no compensation for the wait or the missing item, and no manager came to speak to us with apologies. We left very disappointed, and certainly overcharged. read more

My visit was late winter just on the cusp of spring 2022 and I would really like to experience this spot, area during warmer months. The water beckons. We have been coming here for years and I will cut to the chase: How can a New York City institution like PJ Clarke's not serve Guinness in a Guinness glass?? We were told that 'corporate management' decided to get rid of the Guinness glasses?!? I'm not exaggerating when I say this is an abomination and PJ's is so much better than this. And how can some ( not all) of bartenders not be trained to pour a proper Guinness? Someone is dropping the ball here in a very big way and hopefully they will change it back and pour Guinness in its proper glass.
