One of the best values for a weekday lunch on Torrey Pines mesa is located inside Sanford-Burnham…read moreMedical Research Institute, which is OPEN TO THE PUBLIC during lunch hours (11 a.m. to 2 p.m.). The cafe offers fresh, quick, made-to-order inexpensive gourmet food (through CulinArt) prepared by Chef Peter da Silva and his team.
HIGHLIGHTS:
* Fresh salad bar at $5.88 per pound (just under 37 cents an ounce) is nearly bargain priced. The offerings are great, but you should get there by 12 p.m. (even 12:30 p.m. is a gamble) to get the full selection, which includes spring mix, romaine, spinach, raw tofu, tomatoes, artichokes, carrots, alfalfa, garbanzo and kidney beans, cucumbers, corn, peas, broccoli, bell peppers, dried cranberries, sunflower seeds, croutons, pasta salad, potato salad and much more.
* The freshly-made soup of the day is always a creative surprise with random selections (they don't serve the same soups every week) ranging from ones that "sound weird but taste good" such as Fish and Rice or Beef and Macaroni to flat-out gourmet soups like Cream of Asparagus (one of the cafe's standouts), Cioppino, and several weeks ago they even had authentic Menudo. Regardless of the selection the soup is just $2 for a cup (a bit more for a larger size).
* As an alternative to the soup, there's turkey chili served daily -- great quality, lean and only costing a bit more than the soup. This tends to run out fast though, so don't stall till the later portion of the lunch hour.
* The portions are POSTDOC-sized. That means, the cafe especially caters to the hundreds of young scientists at the Institute who appreciate that they can purchase a large meal at lunch in a biodegradable to-go container and still have plenty left for dinner (as they toil away into the evening on their experiments).
* In addition to the regular menu of cold and hot sandwiches, wraps, burgers, etc, the cafe always offers three different rotating specials of the day (priced just under $7). Recent items have included: gyros, barbecue chicken, roast pork loin, Thai-style stir-fry, lasagna (meat and vegetarian versions), and a turkey Caesar wrap.
* FRIDAYS: While the menu is constantly changing, offering a wide variety, you can always count on Friday as offering a gourmet fish dish such as salmon or mahi mahi. Friday also offers a deal on a beer-soaked hot dog combo with fries and a soda. Also, there is a combo of SOUP PLUS ALL-YOU-CAN-EAT SALAD (that is, all you can stuff in a to-go box) for one low price (around $6).
* Starbucks coffee is served at the cafe with no crazy price mark-ups.
* For Institute employees, the cafe is also open for breakfast 7 a.m. to 10 a.m., and you can pick up grab-n-go sandwiches after lunch until 4 p.m. If you work here, it's worth coming early to get breakfast because it is available a la carte for cheaper than going to McDonald's and it's made to order (for example it's only like 50 cents for an egg, and just over a dollar for a single pancake).
NOTE (in reponse to the last review): Sad to say Brian is gone. He truly did make amazing sandwiches and wraps! There was something magical about the way they came together....was it just the way he toasted the bread on the panini press?
