The only thing that is keeping me from giving this place a 5 star is the price. It's a bit on the expensive side. But as the old saying goes, you get what you pay for. Let me save you some time here. rather than get horrendously overcharged for shoddy, frankly unsafe work which had to be completely redone by a reputable garage, just throw a couple thousand on the floor , pour some lighter fluid on it and light a match. We had a problem with an annoying rattle in the exhaust system. I brought the car into PMS and explained the situation and my thoughts on a solution. Beau, checked out the options and we came up with a workable quieting of the muffler. While very busy, he was cognizant of having to wait and thanked me for my patience. Well somehow my Yelp review of my horrible experience with this place has disappeared from this site. Shame. Though it has only gotten worse since then after I was able to tow my car away from this 'car repair' shop and have it checked out by my treasured mechanics of well over a decade here in L.A. . I put the 'car repair' in quotes for a reason. I paid $3500 for a repair that wasn't after initially being quoted around $1500. The extra $2000 was for labor alone. When I finally asked how they came up with their pricing I was told it was a very complicated algorithm. When I finally got my car down to my trustworthy mechanics, I found that even the part that had been replaced had been put in incorrectly and had to be replaced again and that other damage was done to other major parts including the transfer case and finally the transmission likely because or their incompetence. I am currently exploring my options in dealing with the terrible job these people did to my car, charging me an arm and a leg for a car that left their shop in worse shape than when it went in. The coup d'grace was that after they raised their price the third time, now telling me I needed a whole new transmission after assuring me at the beginning that I didn't, THEY CHARGED ME STORAGE FEES OF OVER $400.00! When the very nice fellow from AAA tried to speak to the owner (this after I'd already paid $3500 up front for a repair that only led to them quoting me an additional $5000 or so for a new transmission, all this for a 2007 Lexus, well mechanically maintained, that was only worth about $8500 total!) he told the fellow from AAA that this was just how he did business. Sadly, truer words were never spoken. Not finished with you fellows yet. I promise that you have not heard the last from me. By the way, it seems to me that the older glowing reviews for this shop were for when it was under the longtime ownership of a seemingly beloved local icon, not for this guy that purchased the place. Due to the pandemic and not doing much driving, took my RAV4 in for an oil change, before it was due and to have the brakes checked. It had been in to this shop previously for minor service and for a very expensive water pump replacement a couple of years ago. So this time, picking up the car, the brakes weren't checked with wheels off because the mechanic said the wheel lock socket on the rims wasn't the correct one. So took his word, raced over to Costco, where I bought the tires and where the tires are rotated every 5K miles, to tell them I was informed that the wheel lock socket didn't work. Their mechanic walked out to the car with me, we took out the wheel lock socket, and guess what, it worked. So along with the oil change, I got some aggravation and wasted time and gas to go on a wild goose chase. This was a Friday, went in on Monday, and Kevin, the owner, who was there Fri, was out and spoke to the manager, Kyle. Explained to him what happened (along with the serious ding in my door, another issue) and he said he'd talk to Kevin. Today, Kevin took the position that whatever his mechanic said about the wheel lock nut was good enough for him, and that I had created an unsafe working environment by coming in to ask for an explanation for the wrong information. Don't know how Kyle presented my visit and questions to Kevin, but don't expect that if there is a problem with their work, that Kevin will be honest and will take as an affront any plain, straight-forward questions about issues with their work. He then mentioned that he doesn't want my business, as if he was going to get any more of it. So Pacific Motor Service is risky, the owner Kevin, in my humble opinion, is unstable, due to how he handled what should have been a straight forward discussion of the issues. That he refused to accept that his mechanic had provided incorrect information tells you all you need to know about this shop. Beware. read more

I was on few day vacation with family in Big Sur. My car broke down in remote location. I had it towed to this AAA recommended repair facility . I knew the problem with the car and specifically asked them to replace the faulty part. Even gave them the part number. They took advantage of us being away from home and first did some unrelated repair that they assured me would fix the car. It did not so they did what initially asked for and that did fix the problem. They did however quoted me 3 times the part cost. Being stranded away from home I had no choice but agree. They also did not let me know that they closed Friday a little early and did not work Saturdays. I tried to contact them via email, text voice mail, facebook and instagram begging to let me pick up the car. No response the whole weekend so I had to get two extra hotel nights and accommodations. The vacation was ruined. IF you are from out of town DO NOT GO NEAR THIS PLACE if you need car repair!!!! $50 part and 30 min installation turned into a $600 job and two extra hotel nights. Of course they will not own up to it. They did not then, why would they now? read more

This is the WORST, most dishonest auto service business I have ever experienced. I brought my car here because it was the closest place I could literally push my car to, and everything went wrong after they "fixed it". I began having carburetor problems, and my entire cooling system became screwed up. So I went back, and they greatly overcharged me to replace the radiator, which I payed only because if I didn't buy it they were going to charge my wife and I nearly $200 just for looking at the car. They gave me a 5 year warranty on the brand new radiator. 6 weeks later I really started having problems, and opened the hood to find a gaping hole in the radiator! So I took it back and showed them the hole, and they refused to fix it, even though they had guaranteed it under warranty. The owner, Kevin, got nasty with me and tried to explain that they would not do anything for me, and after a long, drawn out fight I finally convinced them to at least patch the hole in the brand new radiator I put in. I took it elsewhere and was told that the radiator was in fact 4 years old and the hole most likely started as a crack before I ever paid the $900 to have it installed and warranted by Pacific Motors. In short, I do NOT recommend this place. Even while I was waiting at the counter of the office here, A man was very upset explaining to Bo, the man who works the counter, that he didn't understand how his 2010 BMW never had its "check engine light" come on until after he took it to Pacific Motors. I have met many locals who all have bad stories about this place, and the few people who have good things to say are all wealthy people who are ignorant and don't realize they are being ripped off, and don't wonder why things start going wrong with their cars after they drive off the lot of Pacific Motors. I truly hate being the fly in the ointment! My experience with Pacific Motor Service was just ... plain... lousy! I really hope my experience was an anomaly, as I have a soft spot for independent stores, shops and services - especially if they are trying to go Green, but for me this place just didn't work out! I read the reviews and in a fit of Yelp-inspired enthusiasm, I took my car and my idealistic self and went to Pacific Motor Service hoping to find that semi-mythical great mechanic we all want and need. My car needed some routine maintenance, I wanted to check out the local mechanic shops, it seemed like a potential match made in heaven. And yet.... They seemed to like my car a lot because they kept it in the shop all day! The problem was, I like my car too! I called three times that day, as they didn't seem to want to call me. My first call went to the answering machine as the whole shop shuts down an hour each day for lunch. This didn't irritate so much as cause me to reflect on how spoiled I have become by the San Francisco Bay Area's tradition of more generous operating hours. My second phone call got a live person and a promise of a price quote in "30 or so minutes." My third phone call got me a price quote... an hour and a half before Pacific Motor Service's closing time. And what a price quote! It was literally twice what I had expected! It was hard not to blurt out "You've *got* to be joking!" Saying that to a mechanic simply can't be wise. While I was still blinking in disbelief at the price quote, the mechanic hit a pet peeve of mine and began to lecture me on the importance of car maintenance. I can't think of a more surefire way to alienate a customer and I found myself needing to cut him off. I *hate* interrupting people, yet I hate being lectured even more. Sigh! What's a girl to do in a sticky Judith Martin-esque situation like that? I spent an hour walking to and from the place because they didn't seem to have a courtesy shuttle that day. Yes I did ask. I'm not complaining too much because it was a nice day for a walk, but it did cut into my work time, which was a pain in the tush because it meant my evening became catch up time. The front desk people were nice enough, I suppose, however it came across as being a bit... what's the word? Insincere? That works! Although, I think I'm just nitpicking now, so I'll wrap this up now before I get all worked up and this review gets out of hand. In short, if you have extra hundreds of dollars you don't need and car-free time you can afford to spend, this place would probably be excellent. (And if you do have extra hundreds of dollars you don't need, I have a *ton* of suggestions for what you can do with it!) They do seem like they do a very thorough job and give good information on what your car needs. For me though, it was a mildly expensive lesson in checking places out *very* thoroughly before I spend money and time on them. I did get the work on my car done, so I'm happy again. I took it elsewhere and got it done for 40 percent of Pacific Motor Service's estimation. Yay! read more

Not a fan. I had dash lights on and a specific issue that needed to be looked at. Wanted $167 just to look at my car and let me know everything that's wrong with it. My car is 10 years old! I'm sure there's lots wrong with it but just fix what's broken please. Instead they wanted to create a laundry list of future business for themselves. I asked if they could tell me what on the list would prevent me from breaking down or what would break first. Um, can't tell me that. So, took my car else where and had it fixed. THIS IS THE PLACE TO GO!! I just got my car's brakes fixed, and I could not be more impressed with this place. From the very first phone call I made, they were extremely courteous and knowledgeable. They were able to get me in and out in the same day, which was impressive considering the major brake work they had to do. Furthermore, they gave me a ride back to my house (which is about a 10-15 minute drive) AND picked me up (EVEN THOUGH THEY WERE TECHNICALLY CLOSED!!) to bring me back to get my car. They fixed the brakes perfectly, they performed a complimentary whole-car inspection, and they were very knowledgeable. The best part is their prices are very reasonable, too! So, if you can't tell by now, I am a HUGE fan of this place and I wish I could give them 100 stars. This place is the way to go. Buck and Kevin were the guys who I dealt with, and they were amazing. I'm agreeing with F.M. - the only reason it's not 5 stars is the price. Other than that, I can't say enough wonderful things about them, so maybe they're WORTH the higher price? We were visiting Monterey when our "check engine" light went on. Nightmare, as I'm unfamiliar with local services and far from home, dependent upon the car to get me back! Checked Yelp for recommendations of someplace nearby (as I couldn't be stuck in Salinas for a day or more, where there are likely less expensive places) and first called Tom's, who wasn't available until the next day. Willing to pay a little more ($30 more for the diagnostic), I called Pacific and Kevin first tried to help me over the phone (check the gas cap, etc), to save me the trip. Wasn't it, so I drove over and he took the info right away, telling me he'd hopefully have news by lunch. Called back right as scheduled to tell me what it was, and the price was quite high (but actually, probably the same as a dealership, so not completely outrageous), but I trusted the diagnosis. He was VERY honest with me and, even though he KNEW I was from out of town and needed to drive 300 miles home, he very truthfully told me, "You can wait on this repair - you'll get home fine" (he gave me lots more info, VERY thorough, than that, but I'm summarizing). Really, they could have totally pulled one over on me, telling me it was some horrible thing that would endanger me or ruin the car if we didn't fix it before getting on the road, but he didn't. Throughout it all he was sooooo helpful, even giving info about stuff in town, telling me lots of details about the car and the exact nature of the issue, additional issues they found, etc. Truthfully, I WANTED to give him the business, but I just could not afford it when I knew I could do it for less at home. I really hope those who can afford it or who really want the best care for their vehicles use them! I can tell they're worth it! read more

I've had my vehicle serviced twice at PMS and the work was excellent. However, they are expensive. Remember this is a PG-Monterey business that has the very expensive overhead of having to do business in two of the most high cost cities on the peninsula. If you can afford the higher prices, PMS is fine. If you're on a fixed income or a limited budget, I suggest you find a shop in Marina (Marina Tire & Brake) or in Salinas (east side auto repair shops are the least expensive). IE: I needed a new catalytic converter (2016) - I priced the work in Monterey and Seaside and was quoted anywhere from $800 to $1300 dollars - way too much for my budget (and 20 year old car). I ended up at a muffler shop on East Market Street in Salinas where I paid a total of $240. for the catalytic converter and install. And yes I passed my smog test for vehicle registration renewal later that month. If you don't have much money, stay away from shops in PG and Monterey. Go to Salinas and find a good shop on the poor side of town. The services there are priced to the wallets of the people who live in those neighborhoods. That's how you save money. Period. read more

I brought my car here years ago because it had trouble starting. I dropped it off and they called me to tell me it would cost upwards of $4000 to fix my $7000 car! I told them that I would be taking it to another place to get an estimate. On the car ride over I told the driver/employee of the shop my situation and all I wanted is for my car to start again. He said that it they could do $300 worth of work to get it going again but it was a 'temporary fix'. I agreed and they fixed it for a couple hundred ONLY after I threatened to take it somewhere else. This was 5 years ago folks. I would be giving them 1 star for trying to scam me, but I gave them 2 since they essentially got my car fixed. read more

Supreme customer service. Buck at the front counter is a gentleman. I'm not from around here and had an "oil crisis." being a young woman at a mechanic shop is NO "walk in the park" - I was impressed and appreciative of Buck asking me how much I knew about engines (I know a little) - he walked me out to my car and explained the problem. ***They rented me a CAR from Enterprise on THEIR dime (very classy) for the work. I got more bad news about the car, but before even asking me to authorize it, they asked if I could come down to see for MYSELF the problem (I authorized via phone) - but Buck nevertheless showed me the actual problem (totally garbage clutch). Didnt' charge me extra labor for replacing the clutch. Class, class and more class - I highly recommend this place. AND - exTREMELY environmentally conscious - Buck said that the place was about to be the first GREEN-CERTIFIED business in the state (for mechanics). Awesome. read more

I think of this place often. Each time I use my brakes, in fact. That's because after they did a complete brake job one wheel always screeches loudly. I took it back to have them fix the problem, and was told that it wasn't due to their work, that it's probably the struts causing an issue. They would gladly replace them. I checked with a Honda specialist and was advised that the struts were perfectly good, and cheap brake parts are the likely cause. This is a place that is out to do as much work on your car as possible. I regret having used them, preferring dealing directly with a mechanic than with a service manager. I drive a 2013 Mercedes C250 Coupe. I came in initially because my check engine light was on and I needed it gone to pass smog. Walking in I got the impression that this establishment was a clean, well kept place and I was impressed that they had same day availability as a walk in. I met Rory who I believe is very knowledgeable in his profession and practices AMAZING communication skills. I was more than satisfied with the approach the mechanics took on my vehicle which was a step by step approach. Starting off with the basic simple things and not jumping into any conclusions without probable cause. Estimates are provided with any additional recommendation made and you will owe nothing more than what you as the car owner agree to. Summaries of the mechanic notes were also sent to me via email by my request which was extremely helpful for me to understand further of what the mechanic saw on/within my cars engine. My car needed more work than I initially thought, but I am happy with the outcome as the check engine light is corrected and I also have the peace of mind that my car has been thoroughly inspected by a professional. All new parts and labor are covered with warranty for 3 years or 36,000 miles. Thanks for taking me in as a walk in and I wish you success in your business Pacific Motor Service. DO NOT TAKE YOUR CAR HERE! You will be ripped off! First time customer... I got a flat tire down the street from Pacific Motors, was told it would cost me $40 to patch the tire and switch out with the spare. (regular cost is $25 max!) I had never dealt with a tire issue before and didn't know i was getting screwed! Mark who works the front desk at the PG location was very pushy telling me he highly recommended I "buy a full set of new tires". He claimed my current tires sidewalls were cracked and ready to blow anytime. He made it seem like I'd drive off their lot and my tires would all blow out! I declined as i could smell the bull. Too bad i didn't know earlier about the flat repair costs... I have since called 5 other local auto repair shops asking what they charge for tire patching and switch out of the spare. All of them said $23-$25 max! I then explained what Pacific Motors had charged me and none were surprised. They all have had experience of dissatisfied/ripped off customers who now bring their cars to their shops and never go back to Pacific Motors. One repair show told me Pacific Motors marks costs up about 300%. I'm certainly not going back to this place. I especially warn other females against going here. They see us and think "oh she doesn't know anything about cars" and will rip you off. Shame on them. Spread the word! read more

Took a BMW here for a pre-purchase inspection, the car was certified pre-owned from a reputable dealer yet these guys were still able to find 3 issues with the car that definitely needed fixing before buying. $130 well spent in my opinion. Would go back again for sure. read more

I dropped my car off at Pacific Motor Service this morning, because I had two lamp lights go out in very quick succession (and I needed an oil change, heh hem). I made a very lame attempt to change the lights myself, but was stymied quickly after opening the hood...this place was in walking distance to my work, so I thought I'd give it a shot. Was met by Beau at the front counter, who was very friendly, and efficient. He offered me a shuttle to work - even though I opted to walk. Will keep in mind for future use! He called later that morning, to let me know about a cracking drive belt and an air filter needing replacing - AND, confirmed for me that neither my brakes nor battery needed replacing (as another auto body shop had suggested a couple of months before) - yay! The prices...were a bit on the high side, in my opinion. But with the AAA discount I wound up getting 20% off, which really helped. So, price well in the fair zone for what was accomplished. Hell, they even vacuumed out the car for me (I have a 3 year old, so it was in a bit of a state, to say the least). I will definitely go back, for all my car needs. And this is saying something, because I'm a bit of an auto repair shop whore. Just can't commit. But, after my experience here, I think I might want to put a ring on it! read more

I've been taking my car - 2006 BMW Z4 - to Pacific Motors for a couple of years now. Today was my latest visit. Yesterday afternoon my car didn't start. Sounded like a dead battery. That evening I called AAA & the tow truck operator jump started my car and advised that I get a new battery today. I called at about 9AM and they told me to bring the car in ASAP. I got there about 10 and they said they'd have it ready by 2. It needed an oil change so I had them do that, also. They called me just before noon to tell me that they'd found something leaking around the oil filter. They said it was a common problem for this car (or BMW's in general?) as they got older. I told them to go ahead and replace the part and they told me that the car wouldn't be ready till about 5. I had to wait a few minutes after I got there for them to finish up. Kyle took care of me at the front desk in the morning and Jim finished up in the afternoon. Both of them are very professional - calm, happy to give you as much explanation as you want and Jim showed me the old part. I don't know much about car engines but it was obvious that oil was leaking out of the part. I think I received excellent service. They got me in that day - and they had a full schedule - and then stayed late to finish up. They found a leak early on in the problem saving me from having oil stains on my driveway. They're not cheap but, then, quality service, in any field, never is. And they are still a lot less expensive than having repairs done at the dealership. read more

I can't begin to tell you how unhappy I am with pacific. Not only did they grossly over charge me, they did work that I did not authorize. His response was "Whoops. That's not good." After the whole fiasco in dealing with pacific, he held my vehicle hostage because he charged more than he was supposed to for the "covered" warranty work. He told me it was my responsibility to appeal with corporate and that in thr mean time he would be charging storage fees. He obviously saw I was an out of towner and he could take advantage of me since I obviously wouldn't ever come back for his services. STAY AWAY. read more

How often do you speak with a guy at a repair shop who can tell how much repair experience you have and then spend the time to coach you on doing the repair yourself? Or give you advice on how to save the money by, say, buying the front brake rotors and installing them yourself rather than having them turn them for you? When one of the guys teaches auto repair at the local community college, I guess. In all the years I've dealt with auto repair shops, I've never encountered anyone so helpful, so willing to listen and explain, and so dang honest so as to talk themselves out of a repair job. read more
