I've been coming here for years. Since COVID started, we have tried to get the elusive goat biryani a few times. Every time we called, it was already sold out! They only have this item on the weekend and it's a very popular one. This past week, I was finally able to get a hold of some! My whole family was thrilled haha, doesn't take much to get us excited nowadays. Anyway, along with the goat biryani, we also got chicken tikka masala, goat curry, 3 chicken tandoori legs, lamb chop, and 4 naan. I ordered right when the restaurant opened on Friday, they said the order will take about 30 min. Once I arrived, the order was ready. They have a good pick up system and they have tap to pay options. We ate the food for dinner, so we had to reheat it later on, but everything was delicious! The goat biryani really was the star of the show, but we also enjoyed the other dishes. The only issue with my order was that they gave us 3 naan instead of 4. Been wanting to try this place for so long, and it definitely lived up to the hype in my brain. I got this place to-go, because I definitely could not have eaten the tikka masala without more rice or vegetables because it was very flavorful. 1. Chicken Biryani ($10) - This was the only dish I had problems with. The rice was really good, flavorful enough to eat on its own but not overpowering, but the chicken was quite dry. 2. Tandoori Lamb Chops ($14) - There are only 4 pieces :(, but this dish was so good. I love the spice they put on the lamb, and each one was a pretty solid piece too. 3. Chicken Tikka Masala ($10) - Star of the night. I love the curry portion of this dish, with such rich tomato flavor that works perfectly well over rice. Came here on Thanksgiving because whaaaat- it was open. This place is self service. You can get water and sauces from the fridge. Onions, plates, napkins, to go containers. You can also get complimentary tea and add sugar according to taste. Kinda scared of how sanitary their stuff is though- don't wanna get sick eating raw onion and it doesn't seem like their health safety standards are phenomenal. There's a monitor that shows what number is being served/what numbers have been served. Very interesting. Helpful. Adds to the self serve feel. Feels like you're at the airport when the number is announced every once in a while. The place was very busy around 7pm on Thanksgiving day. Whenever the busser came around with his cart to wipe tables down, his cart would swipe my chair. Thought he would be more careful the next time he came around, but it just kept happening. I came here last week with my boss for lunch after listening to my coworkers rave about this place. When we arrived, it was quite empty for a Tuesday. We place an order with the cashier and he gave us a number, once the food is ready they called out our number and we pick up the dishes by the kitchen. Chicken Tandoori (Leg): Juicy and charbroiled, just how I like it. Chicken Korma: AKA chicken meatballs. I was a little skeptical about this dish but my boss recommended it and was very tasty. I like the sauce it was cooked in and kept pouring it over my rice. Garlic Naan: MMMMM! The dough was more on the thicker side but it was still very crispy and chewy. I loved it. Vegetable Biryani: Huge portion! I really enjoyed the generous amounts of vegetables. Mango Lassi: Best mango lassi I ever had. It wasn't too creamy or heavy and the bits of grinded ginger was a plus. Mixed Vegetable Curry: The sauce was delicious. It had a very light hint of curry and was not overpowering what so ever. My coworkers and I ordered food here for lunch since it was nearby and they do pick up during the COVID-19. We ordered chicken chole, butter chicken, rice, and naan bread. We thought it would be enough food for two people but they have us such big portions!! Especially the naan bread which is twice the size of other places!! We ended up feeding 4-5 people with it!! I was very impressed at the value and quality of the food here. Two of my Indian coworkers said this was the best Indian restaurant in Fremont and after trying it I definitely agree! The butter chicken was well cooked and the flavor was phenomenal. I especially enjoyed the rice, they use a really great blend of herbs and it's super tasty. They don't comprehend questions well, and they don't directly answer questions. This place is pretty good; compared to Shalimar, the food is about on par in taste but orders at Pakwan come out MUCH more slowly. The restaurant itself looks much nicer and cleaner and more open here. Similar to Shalimar in that you order at the cashier and pick your own table to wait and eat at; however, at Pakwan, they won't bring your food to you. They'll give you a number and call it out on the fancy TV/speaker system, and then you go back up to pick it up. To cut down on wait time, I noticed some people called ahead to order, arrived when it was done and then sat down to eat it. I'll probably do that next time too to save time. FOOD: Vegetable Biryani: Loved it! A heaping plate of goodness. It's a great side for whatever you're eating. Karahi Chicken: a bit too spicy but the meat was super tender and came off the bone easily. Tandoori Chicken Leg: juicy and grilled well. Onion-stuffed naan: meh. A bit tough. I like the naan at Shalimar better. The chai tea is free and really good! Get some while you're waiting for your food. It runs out pretty quickly though when there are a lot of people eating there. Mango lassi - this mango lassi has an excellent mix of sweet and tart. It's a tad bit more on the tart side, but not by much, as it doesn't overpower the sweet at all. The best thing about Pakwan is their quality of food is very consistent. We love the tandoori chicken legs. They are very well marinated and cooked well yet not tough. Example: Called at 7:23 pm on 12/30/21 to order food for pick up; Was placed on hold for over ten minutes, so I hung and tried calling back several times and the line showed busy. The garlic naan is great! My goat curry is spicy but not punishing. The chicken tandoori is juicy and flavorful. Even the rice is aromatic and moist. The layout may not be to everyone taste: it is an open room. The sound level does vary with the headcount. I hold this to be an inconsequential idiosyncrasy -the food more than makes up for it.
