I challenge you to find better food in Santa Fe for the price. Holy smokes! The red chile here tastes like my mom made it. I have never in my life or travels EVER tasted a red chile even close to my mother's. SO tasty, so rich, the right amount of heat. It was delectable heaven. The food here is AMAZING- service is great, and the prices are shockingly low. I ordered the juevos rancheros and Rockies Breakfast Tacos. Both were outstanding. I've talked about the red chile so much (it's my fav) , so let me just mention that the green chile is phenomenal as well. If you want actual authentic Mexican food you must come here. Food - Terrible Ambiance - actually very interesting and inviting. I was excited to eat here until... Service - WORST IN THE WORLD. No joke! Came in with my fiancée. The restaurant wasn't the easiest to find, and even harder to enter being that the door was locked even though it was clearly open. We went there because we were under the impression that breakfast was served all day - it is not. The waitress took FOREVER to seat and treat us, despite it being completely dead. Obviously, we just missed the rush, there was many dirty tables with dishes piled high on all of them. She wasn't busy busing, or doing any kind of work it seemed, just standing behind the counter for several minutes chatting with the cooks or someone we couldn't see. After waiting patiently, we were finally given dinner menus. My fiancée and I looked disappointed, and inquired about breakfast. The server had already walked away and it took several more moments for her to return. She said it wouldn't be a problem if we wanted to get breakfast, which was very nice of them to be willing to do for us. We both ordered breakfast burritos, one xmas, one red, both bacon. The price tag was staggering, over $15 a pop but that wasn't surprising considering where we were. But it did become an issue when we got our meals. The burritos were laughable. Both in size, and the fact they sat under a heating lamp for a good 7-10 minutes before they were eventually delivered to us. They had obviously been microwaved too, the minuscule amount of chile (maybe three tablespoons, if that) had a crust on it and the tortilla was chewy. The bacon wasn't fresh, nor were the hashbrowns. Why offer to make breakfast if not providing quality ingredients that are fresh?? That was the straw that broke the camel's back, and we complained. I had only two bites, but they refused to take it off the bill stating that I had eaten more than half. Bologna! And even if that was true, that's only because the burritos were PUNY. The smallest I've ever seen served, and I've lived in New Mexico for over 19 years! They straight up refused to give us our card back after snatching it from my fiancées hand and ran it anyway, for the full price of the meal, and refused to even give us the leftovers that I would maybe feed my dog but sure wanted if we were gonna be charged for it, which we were. Then they threatened to call the cops! Why?! WE PAID, despite not wanting to. AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS, and if the door is locked, take that as a sign and move on. Spend your money at any of the other choices in the area, please! I'm astonished they're still in business with the way they operate. Worst experience ever. read more

We were visiting the area, and I wanted to try New Mexican food and I had never been to NM before only driven through. This taco was my dream, had everything I wanted, this is how I make my breakfast tacos at home and no one in So Cal makes it like this, I guess that's why it's New Mexican food. But yeah, these tacos had what is usually not served in tacos or come with breakfast tacos: hashbrowns, sausage, bacon and get this: pickles. The pickles were understated and gave it an acidic pop every now and then. Who knew a little bit of pickle would be good on breakfast tacos? Well, Palacio does! The service was great, we sat on the back patio, on a late Friday morning. While we waited on our food, the chef came out and checked on everybody, making sure someone had taken our order. Our server and the chef/owner (Damian) came back out to ask us how the food was, and we chatted him up a bit. We felt very welcomed, like we were at his house. We've been in the states traveling for five weeks in Colorado, Texas, and NM. This is the best Mexican food we've had the entire time. I highly recommend! I had the pear salad, my husband had the enchiladas. Everything was exceptional. But our kids left the restaurant hungry. All the portions are relatively small and the chips and salsa are not free but quite expensive. They also didn't offer water and the drinks were expensive with no refills. Don't go expecting the normal restaurant generosity. The service was wonderful though. Kind waiters who were attentive. The restaurant itself was beautiful and the atmosphere and vibe were great. WATCH your bill! We went to Palacio for brunch based on the reviews. It was a cute place with "local" clientele and appeared like a nice spot. We ordered and were not disappointed with our food. When we got the bill, it all changed. The entrees were priced on the bill over a dollar more than what WAS ON THE MENU as were our drinks...that were priced on a menu ON THE TABLE. I waitressed & know that a miskey happens. NOPE - not all items and the way the response was tells it all. We pointed it out and the waiter simply took the bill and changed it to the correct prices. No apology or acknowledgement. True to form in Santa Fe; folks try to get away with what they can and if they're caught, they're caught. That is the norm here now so BEWARE. Our group agreed with several other reviewers that red took the win for us - more robust and spicy!
