a huge hunk of cabbage that was in my chow mein....

I understand having a limited menu bright now, but when you ask that your entree and your side be in separate containers and they're not. and you get an inedible chunk of cabbage in your chow mein.... not good.

Really bummed out. I don't usually eat out but I wanted a treat today. My food was very stale tasting and there was a piece of hair fried into the eggs in the fried rice. Pretty gross and not worth $9...

Finished my food, as you can see! I ordered the chow mein with mushroom chicken and broccoli beef.

Great service with amazing smiles!! I had chow mein with broccoli beef and mushroom chicken today with veggie egg rolls as a side. It was amazing!! I will definitely come back!

Ending my last review for Golden Wok at 5 stars today. Sad to hear that they are closing shop. But,…read moreI understand their position. No one wants to take over the family business and their youngest wants more time with their parents. Growing up in the food industry, you, as the child, learn how to basically grow up faster cause your parents are working all the time. You learn to cook, be self sufficient and self entertain. It gets lonely. As the owner, you're stuck in between a rock and a hard spot. You have to put in the hours to keep your business running but sacrifice that time with your family to run it. Running a restaurant isn't for the weak! I empathize on both ends of the spectrum for these folks. I was the kid and I was also running the family joint, sacrificing time away from my own daughter. I had to get one last hooray in today! I tried ordering delivery the night before. Clearly everyone and their mama wanted food before the last day. They were about 2 hours out for delivery. So, I waited for today. The parking lot looked busy so I decided just to go through the drive thru. I ordered a large hot and sour soup with a side of pork and seeds. My pork and seeds were tasty! You gotta dip it in the right amount of hot mustard, ketchup and seeds. I can tell it was a fresh batch of char su from the coloring. I have had the soup a dozen times so I know my hot and sour soup with extra bamboo shoots will be good. I'm saving it for later. It's going to be sad not being able to come here for a quick meal with my daughter anymore. We frequented this joint when we want some Chinese food. It's been a good plan B since my family doesn't own a restaurant anymore. I have great memories of hot and sour soup with crab rangoons from Golden Wok. I'm sure many of your patrons have the same feelings as well. Your customers become family over the years so it's a heartbreaking for everyone. Thank you for so many great meals Golden Wok! Good luck to you, your family and your future endeavors!

After reading the reviews, the one thing I got out of them was patience. One man, one wok. My family had owned a couple restaurants in the valley. We were always fully staffed. It's amazing that it's a one man show. If you're on a time crunch or you're really hungry, I would recommend you going somewhere else. You're waiting a hot minute for your food to be prepared. The chef/ owner was cooking when I walked in. Another patron came in after me. He told me just to grab a table. We both waited for a bit but we finally got menus and water. I ordered an egg roll and beef with broad rice noodles with a light gravy. I have been creeping out the menu for a couple days so I'm excited to eat! The egg roll (made to order) came out hot! That baby was packing heat. The exterior was fried golden and crunchy. The inside was savory with a good punch of pepper. I dipped that baby in the sweet and sour sauce. I love the sweet and savory combo. My beef with noodles looked so good! I like the veggies in it. Zucchini, broccoli and bok choy. The beef was nice and tender. The flavoring of the sauce was tasty! I would have liked more gravy, it was very dry. And unfortunately, my noodles were still very hard. They could have been cooked longer. They were hard to eat. I'm happy I got to try the place out. You can tell it's been around for a long time. Everything in the venue is dated. There were several customers there who told me they have been eating there for over 40 years, I love that kind of loyalty. The owner is up there in age so who knows how much longer this joint would be up and running. I'm just happy I got to experience it.

If generosity were a flavor, New Garden Chinese Restaurant would be a Michelin-star contender…read more We ordered a couple of combination dinner plates and a hot and sour soup, and let me tell you--this wasn't a meal, it was a logistical event. The bags arrived promptly, steaming like they had just been hustled out of the wok and into our lives with purpose. Credit where it's due: delivery was fast, everything was hot, and the sheer volume of food bordered on heroic. This is the kind of place that feeds not just your table, but possibly your entire week. Visually? No notes. Golden egg roll, glossy sauces, that comforting, familiar American-Chinese glow that promises indulgence and maybe a nap afterward. And yes, it delivered on the nap. This is heavy food--the kind that makes you loosen a belt and reconsider your evening plans. But then... the flavor. The hot and sour soup leaned a little too enthusiastically into the "sweet" side of its personality, like it had somewhere else to be and rushed the "sour" part. The egg roll came in bold--very bold--with a five-spice presence that kicked the door in, rearranged the furniture, and didn't really ask if you wanted that kind of energy. Across the board, things landed in that curious middle ground: low mein, fried rice not bad, not offensive, just... there. Like a cover band that knows all the notes but hasn't quite found the groove. To be fair, this is American Chinese comfort food in Boise, not a culinary pilgrimage. And in that lane, New Garden absolutely delivers on value, portion size, and speed. You will not go hungry. You may, however, find yourself wishing the flavors hit with the same confidence as the portions. So: shoutout to the delivery game. Shoutout to the sheer abundance. But flavor-wise? It's a polite shrug with potential. Would I order again? Maybe--on a day when quantity feels more important than nuance, and I'm ready to commit to leftovers as a lifestyle.

The rental company didn't give them an option to renew their lease. After 17 years, they are closing their doors without a choice. With closure comes choas. I remember when my family gave notice of our closure. We were chaotic from the time we announced it till the doors closed. Everyone is getting in their last hooray in. I anticipated that kind of madness when we stopped in for lunch today. And I was right, the place was a madhouse. When I have eaten here in the past, there was hardly anyone. It was just another table along with mine. It's always chill. Today on the other hand was pure madness. Tables were full of customers and dirty plates. I went ahead and sat myself and waited for my server. It took a minute for my server to get to me. She was the only one working so I just hung out till she got to me. Tea and menus were finally dropped off and I kicked it till my daughter showed up to have lunch with me. My daughter and I looked over the menu. Knowing it's our last meal at this joint, we decided to go ham. We both ordered soup, a lunch and I also snagged a tofu chow fun for later. My soup order was hot and sour. For lunch I went with your typical order of mandarin chicken, chow mein and pork fried rice. My daughter got won ton soup and beef with broccoli, fried rice and an egg roll. We waited for a hot minute for our food to be prepared. You can tell they were not staffed properly. Only one server with a whole dining room full of guests. I'm sure there were only a couple people working the kitchen trying to push out all of the orders coming in. Our soup did finally make it out. We both ordered small bowls but the bowl size was gracious. They were both hot and steamy. My hot and sour soup was ok. It wasn't really spicy but it did have a nice sour element to it. There were pieces of tofu, bamboo and carrots. It was thick and hearty but overall it was ok. My daughter's won ton soup was average. The broth was nice but there was not a lot of filling in the won ton. It was mainly won ton wrapper. And I found it odd that they put lettuce in the won ton soup. Lunch was dropped off shortly after we started working on our soup. When I placed my order, I had asked for fried rice with my meal. Server said it would be an extra charge and I figured it would be. My plate didn't have the fried rice. It only came with my chicken and chow mien. After I addressed my server about it, she looked completely lost. I got an "ok" and never saw her again. So, I just worked on what I had. The chicken was good. It was fresh this time around. I love the saltiness of the chicken with the sweet and sour sauce. The chow mien will always be one of my favorite dishes. It reminds me of my childhood, growing up at my uncle's Chinese restaurant and eating it all the time. I love when the crunchy noodles get all soft from the sauce. The bean sprouts are my favorite. The chow fun was really good. It was savory, the noodles were chewy and the tofu was perfectly fried. They will always have some of the best chow fun in town. I'm giving today's visit a 5 star but in reality it's truly a 3. I didn't get my rice, our server didn't really tend to our table and I had to get my bill adjusted for extra charges. I know the end of the road is coming soon for them but hopefully they will be able to prepare themselves for the next couple days because the choas will only get worse and clearly they need the extra hands. I wish these folks the best of luck with their future endeavors, whatever they may be. I'm happy I got one last meal in before doors are finally closed at the end of this month. Truly sad that another local joint will be just a fond memory for us now.

Most places have remodeled and taken out the charm and ambiance of restaurants making them stale. Lucky Palace still has that charm and evokes that feeling of being a kid, with your family, on a Friday night family date. I will say the food seems to be on the saltier side here, pretty consistently. And I am on the search for the best sweet and sour chicken in the valley, the chicken was overcooked on the sweet and sour and the sauce on the extreme sweet side. The one time I ordered generals chicken, it was a bit unmanageable to eat because of the salt. I never waste leftovers, I did not eat these leftovers because of the salt content. With that said, I think you can find some good things on the menu. We did enjoy the egg rolls (on the super greasy side), and my parents manage to find great options such as the Lo Mein. Give this a few tries and I do believe you can find a dish you will keep coming back for. Hidden in a strip mall type setup, you would never know it is there unless you are looking for it. I kind of like that. It feels hidden. Like a secret restaurant.

She also speaks Chinese to whomever is doing the cooking in the kitchen behind her that diners can't see into through the high open widow space into it but one can hear the sounds of cooking and Chinese being spoken. In that exchange it is also friendly and maybe even familial. In my book it is the delightful attitude that adds the extra star to rating. And as much as local people are boo-hooing about the closure in this calendar year (2025) of a number of long time Chinese food restaurants in the greater Treasure Valley, from Middleton to Nampa to Garden City and Boise, it seems they want to be super critical of the true little mom-n-pop places like this. Just saying. THE FOOD: This Cantonese - Mandarin menu is structured to appeal to American palates for diners who think Orange Chicken or General Tsao's are real things. That isn't my husband and me given we have been able to enjoy some extraordinary Chinese cuisine via Chinatowns in NYC and SF when we lived there and in Portland (OR) too when there was briefly a restaurant with Xinjiang dishes. But even for us there are things here to appreciate (although, as with all Chinese food places where we do not know the owners personally, we focus on vegetarian options) and if one is looking for Chinese food to take away, one can do a lot worse than this. Dishes (rice included) are generously sized and are in the $12 - 14 range. Noodle dishes maybe around $12. THE SPACE & SEATING: If you are planning to go for the first time, you need to know the space is very small, a handful of booths split between both sides of the room, and a round table in the middle. Also, because it is small, they are going to occasionally have things like bags of rice and other supplies stacked on the floor outside the kitchen. For that reason I am unable to report if the loo is unisex or not because I couldn't get to it on the only eat-in visit because of the supplies that had just been delivered and stacked in the way. And on that note, in the vein of everything being connected to everything else, the owner and delivery driver had a delightful conversation as if they were old friends through this connection of supplier and owner. Our preference here is take-out and we note there seems to be a brisk business for them in that. PARKING: This is a sort of old time Western town themed strip mall in Star (which at one time may have been thought of as that kind of town but which has been gentrified of late by out of state - read California homebuyers) and it has a parking lot. ACCESSIBILITY: ADA parking in the lot. The round table seating might work for a wheelchair user but I didn't look at it closely. Other than that, booth seating. WON'T YOU BE MY NEIGHBOR?: Right next door you will find Sea Salt Creamery + Bakeshop where the owner crafts outrageously good small batch ice cream and also does baking of delicious things from cookies to handpies to cakes to...
