The fried foods here are really good: chicken livers, country fried steak, catfish, etc. This is my go-to place for chicken livers; they're crunchy outside, tender inside, and tasty, served with white gravy if you ask for it. (I forgot to ask for it once, and the waitress rolled her eyes when she had to go back to the kitchen for something she should've asked about in the first place). A friend swears by the beef liver with onions, also. But the sides and desserts could use a little work. The side salad is nothing special (and they bring it with the rest of your meal). The mac 'n' cheese is soupy stuff people make with a mix. The desserts also seem to be short-cut things using mixes: I couldn't even eat the piece of cake I had last time; after one taste, the bitter fake icing completely turned me off. The cobblers taste like they use canned fruit fillings. And the bread pudding had a sickly sweet canned sauce poured over it; it was inedible. I don't expect gourmet meals from a "home cooking" restaurant, but I do expect the food to be a step above being poured out of a can or made with a mix. Also, just a note: it's rude to ask the person at the table who gets dessert free what they want and ignore the other people at the table. You could at least say, "Dessert doesn't come with your meal, but would you like to order a dessert?" The good sides here, again, are the fried things: fried okra, fried green tomatoes, etc. I suppose these are the things that keep me coming back and keep my rating of this restaurant at a 4. Most of the servers are great as well. Despite my criticism of some of the sides and the desserts, it's still one of my favorite places to eat in Dawsonville. read more

Arrived in late afternoon in hopes of beating dinner crowd. Didn't work. The food was mucho delicious and the wait staff was friendly, patient and efficient. The only problems were: -Patrons packed into every available inch. Our row of chairs was touching the backs of the chairs behind us. No room to adjust seating. -No room to store coats and packages except keep them in our laps or try to put on floor (not a good choice) -Heavy traffic all around us. Definitely not an intimate setting but great if one didn't want to communicate with their guest. -EXTREAMLY NOISY!!!! Couldn't even converse with those at my table -Food was delicious and seemed authentic. Served rapidly. Was not able to enjoy cocktail because meal arrived so quickly. -Female server was very fast with refills, take home boxes, and our check. She appeared tired! -Very little waiting space at the front area. Probably won't be a problem in warmer weather and wait outside. -Would have been nice to have a menu while waiting to decide on drinks and food choices. -Menus large in size and hard to juggle i0n a large party Will probably go back due to quality of food. Will not go on a peak eating time. -No room for wheelchairs and maneuvering hard due to crowd. Plenty of parking because restaurant was upside mall area. read more

Having eaten here for both breakfast & lunch it is now time for a review. Papa's place is a popular no frills expanded menu version of the deep south's 'meat & three' with friendly service & decent cooking. The decent: The breakfast choices are serviceable, plenty of bread choices & an ok biscuit helps. The two egg Omelettes aren't dainty & the home made soups are pretty good - as are most sides. And the folks serving & running the show are the best. Our challenge: The Big sized single blueberry Pancake we had recently appeared to be cooked properly but had a raw dough taste & styrofoam texture; very few blueberries were found in our pancake & sadly we couldn't take but a single bite. Generous portions and very filling. I was greeted and had only a short wait despite the very busy Saturday morning of my visit. Since I was solo, they honored my request for a table by putting me next to the bar. The bar waitress was cheery and friendly and came by often to proactively provide drink refills and ensure I had everything I needed. She immediately caught that my biscuit hadn't come out with my order and quickly delivered it. I ordered the Country Fried Steak Skillet and chose hash browns, sausage gravy, and eggs over medium for the dish and it was cooked perfectly. The gravy had clearly visible chunks of sausage. From photos I'd seen, I thought it might be a smaller dish but a photo next to my side of toast shows it's generous. Also in my photos is a shot of the biscuit next to the toast. It's filled with a sausage patty, cheese, and scrambled eggs. It's the large "cat head" variety and the sausage is big and thick - almost the size of a burger! And the flavors were good, and this could have been a breakfast all by itself. read more

We have had great experiences here before, but not again! The hostess informed us that there would be a 25 minute wait time. So we agreed and gave her our name. After waiting over 35 minutes and noticing people whom arrived after us getting seated, we asked the hostess where we were and she forgot to write our name down! Really? And finally being seated, our server took our order. After 15 minutes, she came back to our table to ask how we wanted our eggs! She hadn't even submitted our order to the kitchen yet!!! They will add a 10% surcharge to your meal if you want it to go (a styrofoam to go box and a plastic bag). It doesn't say so on the website, they just stick you with that right after you've told them your whole order. They won't tell you about the extra charge unless you ask them about it. I love the restaurant but this policy is just absurd. I'll change this one star rating to five stars and give them my business again when they get rid of that policy. I used to eat here often but haven't been back in quite some time. Today I went back and everything has changed, and (to me) not in a good way. You now must enter a different door and pay up front; this was a little confusing and you are expected to tip up front before being served which I didn't like. Paying up front gives it more of a fast food vibe but the service is as slow as it ever was which is a mismatch. If you are doing fast food then do fast food, otherwise do a traditional restaurant. I am at the age where change can be confusing and this is not for me. I will probably not be back. P.S. I noticed there were not nearly as many customers as there used to be. Today there were many empty tables and no line where there used to be a line often out the door. Their customers range towards older (like me) which if fine but if others are as confused by the changes as I was then perhaps that is why they now have far less customers. Have used her for catering services and they did great! They will be doing the event again this year. We live in Gainesville, so we don't get to this area much but coming back from Gibbs Gardens we decided to try Papas Place for lunch. We were surprised it was so busy at 11:30. It's a cute place with excellent service. The menu is very extensive with so many southern choices. I had Chicken Fried Chicken, creamed corn and fried okra. It was all excellent. My wife had the Brunswick stew which was a disappointment. It tasted like shredded chicken and pork in bottled BBQ sauce. I guess the lesson is, "don't order BBQ unless you see smoke." I'd like to try breakfast and more things on the menu, I suspect most things here are really good. I might move my rating to a 5 but the stew was really marginal. read more

We usually enjoy Papa's Place every Saturday morning for breakfast. It's good food. I always order the half spicy gravy biscuit with a scrambled egg on top. The side order of egg is around $2-$3 and is normally a nice portion. But this last time I ordered it, I received a very small portion of the egg. I even reached out to them and sent them a picture (one attached) and got no response also pictured. We live this place and felt that not acknowledging my message was less than expected. If you do visit, go inside to eat. The food is great! The service is normally great. I ordered the crust Parmesan crusted chicken, and it was a sad disappointment. The cheese was running. The chicken was raw and breadcrumbs were scratch scattered on the top to imitate crusted the side they called snap peas were black-eyed peas, if anything is changed about the new leadership, it is only the pricing which has went up. Local place but honestly the food is pretty average. It's nice to support local owned, but I also like homemade/scratch cooking or at least not tasting like it came to the restaurant already made and they heated it. I think the desserts in the case they make but everything else tastes premade and for me that's a draw back. We have been for lunch, dinner and breakfast and nothing seemed special or rememberable. Nothing seems like fresh food either. If you like or miss southern meat and sides and need a hot this place may work, but it also may need some additional seasoning. I know my mother in law likes this place and she loves boxes mashed potatoes and thinks thanksgiving turkey has too much seasoning to give you an idea. We will try this place probably in another year to see if there is any improvement since we want to support local but I also need flavor and freshness read more
