I was visiting for the weekend from San Francisco and saw that this place was right across the street from my hotel (win!) I love seafood so this was a must and let me say I am super happy with my visit here and so were my friends. The service was good too. For the price, the quality of the food and the portions are on point. We ordered a ton of dishes to share. Fresh dozen oysters to start, shrimp and scallop pasta, gumbo, deep fried soft shell crab over dirty rice, and fries. You get bread and butter on the house as well. I haven't been to a Pappadeaux in several years. Gone we're the white tablecloths that made it special. The bread didn't have a freshness. The dirty rice was tasteless and dry. I really wish the blackened catfish had come with two smaller vegetable portions to offer a more balanced meal. Plus the house salad was nothing special. Two persons were told there were no baked potatoes when we saw others being served them. When asked our waiter said "I didn't think you would want to wait for them so I gave you fries." Food is 4 star. Atmosphere is 3 star. Some of the staff is great. Trained well and courteous to the customers. Other staff are rude and bang their metal serving trays down which is loud and disruptive. An occasional yelling can be heard from staff inside the kitchen. The bathrooms are dirty, full of trash, trash on floors and pictures hanging from bathroom walls are crooked. Attention to detail is not their strong suit! Also, the bathrooms were in need of minor repair and maintenance. The best part was my meal. I had lobster and it was fabulous! The worst part was certain servers thinking it is acceptable to carry their full serving trays over my head repeatedly. This is very rude behavior. I asked the particular sever to stop doing this, and he did, begrudgingly so. I asked our server about how they are trained. My server said they get two days of training and then they pretty much make it up on their own. Their training goes out the window - is what my server told me. Which explains why some servers think its acceptable to slam items down and yell like hooligans or carry 20lb serving trays of hot food over my head repeatedly. Good sign I thought! My friend and I ordered the mango watermelon cocktail which was awful...not what I expected at all. I ordered a $40.00 dollar platter, fried seafood, I think it was called the Pappadeaux seafood platter with extra shrimp...etc. The food came right away, but it was cold and not good! Nothing Cajun about it; it reminded me of fast food seafood at 'Red Lobster' except I was paying a bunch more money for it. Ask me why 3 stars? Let me start by saying the portions are HUGE here!!! My coworker recommended this place to me and let me tell you..... I THANKED him because it was delish!! It's on the pricier side but I mean it's seafood and big portions so it was expected. We had the raw oysters which was yummy-- I love raw oysters. The seafood gumbo which was my FAVORITE of all that we ordered. The lobster mac and cheese was just ok. My boyfriend got the steak and lobster which was good-- steak was super soft. My sister got the fish and chips which was nothing that really stood out taste wise. For my entree I ordered the crawfish trio and split the dish between my bestie and I. That was probably a bit too much crawfish for me but it was sooo good and flavorful. Even splitting the plate I still had leftovers-- goes to show how big the plates are. Well her I am finally I was able to come back after 3 years. So obviously times have gotten hard and it's harder to come by here so it kinda sucks for me to write this. I've been considering if I should even post this. The service was just not up to par. I had to wait long periods of time to get my drinks or refills. It also felt like our waitress was just in over her head. We even asked if she was new and she said no smh. The food was decent but not hot just a little warmer than warm and for 2, 2 pound lobsters I expected better. When ever we would need something it was like our waitress was no where to be found. Like I said we love it here and it's been hard to be able to come back but to have service like that and for our food to be warm not hot honestly hurts. Now, I've been to several Pappadeaux restaurants plenty of times before. But I never dreamed that as I was beaming down I-35 that I'd look to my left and see a Pappadeaux staring me in the face. I was originally headed for Ruth's Chris in Austin, but it's as if it was calling out to me through my driver side window, "Jay! Come visit me! Everything here is delicious!" Well, the seafood is everything you'd expect from a typical Pappadeaux. And if you've never tried this place before, you are SO missing out on life! But there's a few things about this location that are kinda screwed up and we'll get to those in a bit. First, the good: like usual, I started the evening off with a cup of the lobster bisque. Hands down, they make THE best version of lobster bisque I've tasted to date. I challenge other restaurants to take a lesson from Pappadeaux and maybe create an even better one (good luck!). Because this one includes real chunks of lobster meat in the bisque. The broth is perfectly seasoned and even has little bits of tomato in it. In short, THIS is how a lobster bisque is supposed to taste. The whole thing should be permeated with succulent lobster flavor. Too many other places stop at the broth, thinking that's good enough. But gosh darnit, I want to taste real live lobster in my bisque! That's it. As always, I ordered my all time favorite go-to: the grilled Caribbean lobster tail. But here's where things get a little strange for yours truly. You see, I'm used to having melted butter served with my lobster. Like....automatically. Though I probably could have asked for some, I didn't feel it really needed it, since the tail was well seasoned on its own anyway. Plus, I didn't want to come across to the bartender like I was some self-entitled pretentious douche or something. To be honest, the tail could have been cooked just a tad longer. It was on the fence of being dangerously undercooked. But since it was still edible and the restaurant was hella busy, I wasn't gonna send it back. It's rare I send anything back as it is. So that means usually something has to be severely messed up for me to do so. The baked potato (which I substituted in place of the mashed) was huge, hot and delicious! I think this is the first of few baked potatoes I had where I never got around to eating the skin. Seriously, it was that huge! Okay, let me talk about the one thing I found super awkward throughout my tenure here and can't quite understand. I sat at the bar since I was by myself and I was able to get a seat right away. At the bar, they have a raw oyster bar ran by two dudes. Here's where things get really strange. See, when there's no orders being placed in front of them, they just kinda stand there, arms crossed and vacantly staring into the dining room; almost as if they're either.. a.) Bored out of their minds and desperately waiting for some patrons to order the oysters. Or.. b.) Standing guard over their precious oysters...as if someone at the bar is gonna reach over and steal them out of the fridge. It's just...like...I don't understand. I'm not sure if this is a thing at all Pappadeaux establishments, since this is the first time I actually sat at the bar in one of them. But I just remember feeling like the dude who was literally standing TWO FEET IN FRONT OF ME was watching me eat the whole time, even though I know he wasn't. It just *felt* that way. It's super creepy to have someone standing in front of you staring vacantly into the abyss whilst you enjoy a fancy lobster tail dinner. Just putting that out there. Anyway, Pappadeaux is as I remember it. And it was a real treat being able to go to one of these, especially considering we don't have one anywhere near El Paso. I mean, it's not like Austin is any closer to the ocean than El Paso. Seriously, why can't we get one of these in the '915' area? Let's make this happen, fellas! Great time! I recommend making a reservation (even on a weekday) so that you don't have to wait. Even without a reservation a table for two only took about 20 minutes. Once we were seated it did take about 10 minutes for us to receive service and our waters because the server was not informed that we were waiting. Totally not their fault! As soon as he was informed, our server, Anthony, was great and very attentive! He was awesome! Food was great we especially loved the fried alligator. My last 2 experiences atPappadeaux have not been pleasant at all. My first was at the Oaklaen Location. Experienced embarassment by the management after complaining about being there for over an hour with no food and no one to try and rectify the situation. Not even the managers on duty. The second was at the location off 75 in Richardson Texas. I had hair in my food. I love pappadeaux but the last two experuences have not been up to par. We went for an early dinner Sunday evening and were shocked by the prices. Regardless, we came for seafood and I went about starting with the grilled Spanish Octopus. It consisted of one piece of a tentacle served over mashed potatoes for $18.95. That's pretty steep, especially considering the portion size. Additionally, it was so over-cooked and there was so much (Cajun?) seasoning on it, that it seemed like an over-seasoned piece of rubber. The dinner I chose was Redfish Pontchartrain, which was priced at $38.95. Again, I thought it was rather expensive, but it sounded good, so I ordered it. What a disappointment. It included a fairly small portion of over-cooked redfish, four grossly over-cooked (could not pull the tails off) shrimp, and two pieces of lump crab meat. Pretty sad. My wife had the Crab Cake Appetizer as her dinner. This was smothered with shoestring potatoes, but they had left the sauce off. We came back last night and Oysters did not taste right. We told the manager we were given the Gulf Oysters, she replaced it with Blue Point Oyster but it was not fresh, it tasted old and muddy. I normally like their Oyster but last night either the shucker not care or what. The meat wasn't completely shocked, no juices. It ruined the whole experience for me. We left half a dozen raw oysters on the table. I spit one out for tasting funky. Our server Shana, was too overwhelmed. The table wasn't setup upon arrival nor was there silverware present. NO PROPER GREET AND WAY Over 5 minutes Water bombed our table and still didn't bring silverware. Sean didn't tell us the feature for the evening or offer any suggestions. Continued to ask if we needed more time. Did not bring us a plate or a cup for the baby and never even asked. She's 2 she's a toddler not a newborn. After ordering the drinks they didn't come for at least 15 minutes and they were just strawberry lemonade, which granted did come from the bar but is not the standard ticket time. Finally ordered at 2:55 with no prior table visit besides the drink order. Now to wait on the food. After ordering $38 and $35 entrees, we are now sir and ma'am instead of y'all, you or huhs. After the 30 min wait the food was exceptional. The portion on the seafood platter was definitely smaller than expected but I understand with Austin not being near a body of saltwater. Over the service kind of made me cringe in the beginning he did get better as time went along but the food saved it for sure. My husband has been driving by this restaurant every day this week to get to his consulting gig and really wanted to try it. It's really lovely inside. The waitstaff is very professionally dressed. The chairs at the tables were super comfortable. Our server was very friendly and knew her menu very well. When we told her it was our first visit, she took the time to explain the menu and tell us about the new things they were offering. My husband LOVES Cajun food and he was thrilled to learn that not only could he get seafood, but Cajun seafood at that. He started with a cup of sausage and seafood gumbo and then had alligator for dinner. He loved it and really loved the gator sauce that came with it. I ordered the fried shrimp and Cajun chicken tenderloins. Don't ask me what I was thinking. Plain old black pepper is too "hot" for me. I guess I was trying to prove something because I mentioned to my husband that I was going to ask for just plain chicken and he laughed at me. Evidently I thought I could handle it? Who knows. I'm a lightweight. That chicken was too spicy. There is a kid's menu with plenty of non-seafood choices, so our son ordered some chicken and fries. He cleaned his plate so he got the ice cream -- only 95 cents! :) Our dinners were wonderful and I ordered a slice of key lime pie to-go. Instead of bringing it in a to-go box, she brought it out on a beautiful platter so I just went ahead and dug in. OMG it was heavenly! Very tart, but also very smooth. It was served with a big dollop of whipped cream and some fresh berries. At the moment, however, I am stuffed to the gills. If someone pokes me, I'm gonna pop. It's not going to be a cheap night out. The prices are on the high side. It's not that I think they're out of line, but do be aware that it's not the average family restaurant. It's going to rattle your pocketbook a bit. There was also this funky smell. We were seated fairly close to the kitchen and fairly close to the restrooms so I don't know where it came from but it was unpleasant. Very impressed with this location of Pappas. Our server was really nice and friendly, not too intrusive and yet came just often enough to check up on us whenever we actually needed something. We had 2 dozen oysters and those were REALLY fresh and yummy, also had lobster with steak! The steak was cooked perfectly (medium rare) and the lobster had this really yummy sauce to go with it. I was really really happy with my food. If you have never tried their mashed potatoes, YOU NEED TO TRY THEIR MASHED POTATOES! It's probably some of the best potatoes that I have ever eaten mashed. The portion was really big, and my bf and I were planning to split it...... so our server went ahead and brought it out to us on 2 separate plates! This is probably my hundredth time to pappadeaux in Houston, San Antonio and Austin and i have never been so disappointed! The wait was quick we ordered drinks while we waited and everything seemed fine. We were seated and our nice waitress brought us bread and water while we decided. After we ordered we asked for another drink Moscow mule for my fiance and Margarita with a strawberry swirl for me. Our food came and it looked strange and the waitress said probably because i got the spaghetti squash instead of the dirty rice. Hmmm ok. Everyone knows pappadeaux isn't cheap, not to me anyway. This was a $37 plate of overdone dry fish with 4 shrimp and overcooked spaghetti squash. My fiance ordered the salmon with butternut squash and said his was overcooked also. We were celebrating a special occasion as we like to do at pappadeaux so neither one of us wanted to complain not even to each other. We were just about finished with our meal when the waitress brought our drinks, uh ok. I started to drink mine and could not sip through the straw because of a chunk of ice stuck in there, then i noticed it had sugar on the rim. That was it I was done. The waitress came with our bill and i asked her to take my drink back because of the sugar and she said since it was a strawberry swirl that's probably why they gave me sugar. Really? Why would you make excuses? She said let me see what they can do, i said it's ok i don't want it anymore. She came back with our bill and it was still on there so we had to call her back and ask her to take it off. I'm sorry i have never had such low standards of food and drink quality at any pappadeaux. What a disappointment on our special day. We're done with this location. Fortunately i know this is not pappadeaux standards. If this was the first time I'd been, I might never come back. I had enough food left over for two more meals. The grits are not just for breakfast anymore. The grits are very spicy. The crawfish tails are extremely spicy. The caramel praline cheesecake is excellent. The Mardi Gras pasta has spicy sausage, crawfish, shrimp, in it. Very flavorful and very meaty.
