We had another nice meal at Pappy's with the family. My first in two years. The results pretty much confirmed my prior experience. The Good: I like the western/Texas decor/theme. It's getting a bit dated, but still nice. The menu has an incredible selection from burgers and steaks to enchiladas and pastas. Our server was amazing. I wish that I could remember her name so I could give her an attagirl! The Bad: The food is still fairly average. A decent pasta, decent chicken fried steak. My burger was better than average, but the fries were undercooked and uneatable. Still a nice place for a group, as they will definitely find something to order. Looking for some good comfort food - this is your place. Our server, Bonnie, was fantastic! She was attentive and kept drinks filled and orders taken but also- she's funny and personable and really added to the experience. The food & drinks- awesome. Tried the Boot Scoot Boogie drink and it was - wow! Careful to not drink too many because they taste mild but have a boozy punch. We shared the Philly cheesesteak and Bacon cheese burger. The burger was very good, ordered it medium. It was juicy, flavorful, and the bun is phenomenal. Chose the house cut fries and thought those were good. The Philly was "ok" and is the reason the review is 4 instead of 5 stars. It had good flavor but seemed to be slightly rough. It's not often that I eat southern comfort food. Don't get me wrong, I love it! It's just not exactly part of a healthy diet plan. But when I want to be naughty, I go all out. One of my favorite guilty pleasure is a chicken fried steak smothered in delicious pepper cream gravy, and when I get that hankering, I know exactly where to satisfy it. Pappy's CFS is the real deal and is sure to satisfy a a craving for this southern classic. So what makes it awesome? 1. Batter does not crumble or fall right off the meat 2. Meat is tender and not gristly or chewy 3. The batter is seasoned and not greasy 4. Tasty mashed potatoes 5. Bomb cream black pepper gravy It meets all the makings of a delicious CFS, and it satisfies my craving. Mashed potatoes were good. Coleslaw was nice. This was an ok place . We were in town for business and walked to Pappy's from our hotel. I expected to be better than what we got based on the ratings. We ordered the appetizer that was the pepper and shrimp I think they were called scorpion tails. These were really good and we thought ok this is gonna be a good place. We all ordered ribs okra and mashed potatoes. The okra was just ok the potatoes were good but not wow. But the ribs were not good . This really surprised me I would have thought being in texas that the ribs would be better than this. I was also a little let down that they did not have Lone Star on draft or bottle . This place is ok but I was not impressed at all. I'll say stay away from the chicken fried steak. There was absolutely no seasoning on it at all and it was thin like paper. The nachos were descent. The best thing we had was the fried pickles those were absolutely amazing. I'd go back just for them. I'll give this place another try but I hope it's better than the chicken fried steak. I started coming to Pappy's over a year ago with a large group or coworkers from the company I work with. in the last couple months our regular waitress has started treating us very disrespectful and demanding more tips for her services and being very rude about it. Came in for the CFS and loved everything they had. Appetizers, Mushrooms and Onion Rings(thin strings which I love) were delicious, salad was good sized, and as expected the CFS was outstanding. My family and I, who also run a business, eat at Pappy's at least once a week. We've had everything on the menu and loved it all. Our favorites: Chicken fried chicken sandwich. Breaded and always cooked perfectly, juicy, served on the most amazing bun. My father in laws go to lunch 95% of the time. I personally like the BLT for Me sandwich. I'm super picky about bacon and like it be cooked until it's almost burnt. I tell the waitstaff how I like it and it ALWAYS comes out exactly as requested. The wheat-berry bread it's served on is also really food. My mother in law swears by the Macho Tacos, but loves all of the Mexican food that Pappy's serves. This is a must try place! We went on Sunday morning, so they had a brunch menu in addition to the regular menu. My husband had to try the chicken fried steak. It came with mashed potatoes and a salad. There dressings are homemade, he got the jalapeno ranch, and it was really good. He thought the chicken fried steak was a little on the small side, and did not agree that it was one of the top five in the state. Anyways, he did say the gravy was good. I ordered off the brunch menu and had the eggs sardou. I think they just put the spinach artichoke dip on an english muffin with a poached egg and hollandaise, but let me tell you, it was delicious. I got it with hashbrowns, which I think are repurposed french fries, and they were really good. If I were in the area, I would eat here again. read more

Yum Yum Yum! It's been a long time since I've eaten at Pappy's but oh have I missed thee... Bubba's Chicken is OMG GOOD! I enjoyed it with fried okra and loaded mash. The ribs were saucy and fall off the bone great! Only complaint I have was about the $4 margaritas...No Bueno for me....I guess you get what you pay for. I have visited Pappy's café couple of times and was pretty satisfied with their quality of food and service. They actually have a pretty wide selection of comfort food as I had been craving it for quite some time. I ordered the chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and a salad. My side salad was presented very neatly and I enjoyed every bit of it. The chicken fried steak came with country gravy and I could smell the aroma of bacon from the gravy. I immediately called the waiter to request another country fried steak due to food restrictions from pork bi-products. She got right on it and I got a replacement in about 6-7 minutes. It did taste pretty good along with potatoes and buttered bread. On a subsequent visit, we ordered the fried catfish with French fries and a meatloaf with fried okra. My fish was very well seasoned and bread crummed! It was golden fried along with the potatoes that were golden and crisp. Meatloaf was pretty good too and we liked the fried okra. Mondays are their special for chicken fried steak and I will be returning to Pappy's soon for their special. read more

I found myself reading about Pappys one day and decided to try it. A friend and I were driving in the area and we were lunch hungry. First if all our waiter was nice, knowledgeable, and accommodating. We decided to have the catfish and shrimp. Great decision! My friend also had the tortilla soup. Wow! Definitely get the soup. Love this place... I was introduced several years ago when visiting from Australia, where I was living at the time seeing my family who live in Houston. I recently have moved to Houston FROM California and wanted to return to Pappy's. I recently brought a very good Cali friend who was visiting Houston for a conference at The Houstonian to Pappy's Cafe after picking him up early on a Friday. We arrived (all planned by me and reservation made ahead of time) during Happy Hour. The memorabilia on the walls is really fun and a great introduction for my friend to Texas. We had (which is my favorite appetizer) their famous Scorpion Tails which are beautiful, largish jalapenos stuffed with shrimp and jack cheese, then fried in a light batter...totally delicious. I tried a Strawberry Jalapeño Margarita for something different and it was. I really liked it. My buddy had a beer and he loved the Scorpion Tails. He's a real Cali foodie. This place is a comfort food Disneyland! The servings are very generous and don't be embarrassed to ask for takeaway containers if you can't finish. We had an excellent waiter regardless of the comments. I've received good service every time before, too. Being happy hour we got 6 tails for the same price and the drinks were cheaper so a great kickoff to our weekend. I look forward to returning and highly recommend it and going for happy hour. read more
