With just is the perfect amount of light jazz as background sound to the delightful smells as I walked into Paprika. A quaint and charming two (2) room place with the feel of a little house. Incidently, it's on a street with an adorable tea house, a coffeehouse, a bakery, and a few other delightful offerings. Greeted by the lovely Gabrielle, I was seated in the second and larger room, and she was in-charge of the front. Chef Bruno in charge of the kitchen, spinning out all kinds of great stuff. The menu is small, a handful of appetizers and six entrée items. Sausages and goulashes rule, at least for me, anyway. 5 kinds of imported drafts beers available in 18 oz/36 oz/das boot sizes, glasses and bottles of wine, 1. Polish kielbasa sausage [4.0 stars, $8] -- presented beautifully. How? A little bread, a shot of mustard, a squiggle of ketchup, a small dill petite pickles, and a small mound of sauerkraut. While the kielbasa was not the thick one I was expecting, it was more like a good quality hot dog...but I went from one offering to the next, round and round, back and forth, until I got dizzy. 2. Paprika Goulash [4.5 stars, $17.50] -- Pork goulash with Gnocchi. Small portion of meat, maybe 8 pieces, but heavenly sauce with great gnocchi. A winner. 3. Apple strudel [4.5 stars, $7.50] -- could've been a little sweeter, but the pastry part was unreal...perfect. Served warm with whipped cream. Could it have more choices? Yes. The owner, Gabriela?, super sweet and attentive and definitely passionate about her restaurant. Table bread - complimentary, always good, was toasted and warm perfectly! Chicken paprikash - sooooo good! Chicken is super soft and it looks like a lot of gravy but it was perfect bc I ate the dish with the table bread. My friend had the tomato bisque soup bc he is pescatarian and not that hungry - it was a little on the sweet side so he added some cayenne - it was good to me Apple strudel - omg sooooo good, freshly baked to order and NOT too sweet. If you have a big sweet tooth and like cake frosting then you might not like it but if you're like me and like lightly sweetened desserts then you would love this like I did! I have been eyeing to try this place for so long. It is hard to miss this cute little restaurant every time you get the 24 Bart station. My friend and I went during non-rush hours and the service was really good. We got the table by the window, semi private, perfect to chilling and people watching in SF. The food was really really good. We found out it was Hungarian good rather than German food that we initially thought from looking at the name. I loved there sausage and their pork with gnocchi dish. Everything was cooked and flavored to perfection. Their beer on tap selection is pretty large. The place and bathroom are very clean. Wifey was craving beer and sausages and I was glad--what's not to like? We quickly found Paprika which is not too far from where we lived. We chose to Uber here and discovered that parking would have been challenging. The little cafe was a throwback to my time in Europe. Have not been to Czechoslovakia, but it did feel extremely familiar and cozy. We took a table by the window to watch the world go by... and found ourselves in a bit of a fishbowl...ironic :D We ordered the Paulaner Erdinger Weissbier which came in steins. Lovely brew to wash down the three sausages we ordered as a small and dinner plate. A detail I've not encountered elsewhere was to have the sausage ends split cross wise--I really liked how that made the otherwise chewy end caps tender and caramelized. We chose: Swiss Bockwurst--mild and clean veal sausage with delicate seasonings. A bit too tender for our preference. Hungarian Sweet--snappy, slightly saltier with subtle favorings. Easy to adore. Polish Kielbasa--I was truly impressed by the coordination of garlic, caraway and other flavorings and judicious use of salt. My evening's favorite. The sides were awesome--bread that was a crackly crust around a cloud of lofty crumb. Real potato mash with a pond of addictive paprikash sauce. Crispy tangy-sweet kraut. Mustard with horseradish kick. Cornichon gherkin pickles that were snappy, tangy and clean. The Chicken Paprikash featured the deep, bold earthyness of paprika. Tender pieces of chicken formed an island in a red sea of sauce that will cause even you to fend off all curious and hungry invaders that are your table mates. We had some room left after this hearty meal, so we ordered the Apple Strudel Czech style. It was exquisitely crafted, crusty and chock full of apples. There of was raspberry sauce and freshly whipped cream. Oddly enough, we would have preferred more sugar and salt on the apple filling. And yes, our hostess was exemplary and spoiled us rotten. Even with the strudel not quite to our preference, I was so delighted by the experience (and the price point), that this is easily a 5 star experience for me. Solid 4.5 stars for this unassuming place in Mission. We weren't finding anything open on Xmas eve, but yelp showed Paprika had tables available so we took a chance and went. Cosy place, serving some honest to good East European and German fare, with a great beer and wine list (they had wine from Georgia which I couldn't try cos I already got some amazing dark German beer). Got the Paprika goulash, which was some of the best I've had in the states, brother got the Hungarian sweet sausage and the German spice sausage, both of which were excellent. I found the service here extremely friendly and warm, but the food was strictly average. Possibly it's my taste buds are not tuned to appreciate Czech/Hungarian/Polish cuisine. I certainly did not feel the food warranted the five star reviews I see here. The Paprika Goulash was just OK. The pork was probably a very lean cut and cooked separately from the broth - it tasted quite dry. The gnocchi that it comes with just does not soak up the flavors well. Simple food done well. There's not a ton of restaurants that are casual but still a formal sit down meal, but Paprika is exactly this. I think it's a great date spot especially if you can snag a window seat. It's quiet, good for conversation. Service is friendly and not intrusive. The menu is short and to the point. About a decade back, I took a trip to Budapest and Prague and thought for sure that I would struggle with the heavy food there but not really. I figured it would be a lot of stews and stuffed peppers, which there was, but it was the omnipresence of paprika that made all these dishes uniquely spiky. I doubt if I've had goulash since that trip since Central European cuisine is not that common even in San Francisco. It was nice to see Paprika as I was popping out of the 24th Street BART station one evening. The waiter kindly sat me next to the front window where I watched all walks of life pass by as well as a few crawls and drags. It was beautifully presented on a large plate with the pork and gnocchi in separate piles surrounded by the goulash. I found it homey delicious, hearty eating that could only be supplemented by a huge stein of Central European beer. Now I am not that big a beer drinker, so I was worried I'd feel withdrawal from my usual Diet Coke. However, I knew I had to take advantage of their extensive collection and ordered the $6.50 Weihenstephen Hefe, a lovely golden beer from a Bavarian brewery that's nearly a thousand years old. I had no problem downing that mug as if I was in my Tyrolean outfit at the Hofbrauhaus in Munich during Oktoberfest. Ach du lieber! I think I may have to come back and roll out the barrel. Wow. Who New such a Central European gen was hiding in my little Barrio?!!!??? I used to live around the block from Gambrinus so perhaps I shouldn't be surprised but considering that Paprika and Rosemunde are within a block of each other and I'm within a block of them..... La Mission is Die Mission. Like everyone else I ordered the pork paprika goulash with gnocchi. It did not disappoint. Fortunately there was bread to mop up the leftover sauce. It may be bad manners to do that, but you will too once you try that sauce. Yum. Yes the gnocchi are perfectly cooked with just a but a chew. Yum again. Good wine list and I was sorely tempted both by the tokay and by the Hungarian Riesling but since it's late September and hence Oktoberfest, I succumbed to the Lorelai enchantment of the Hofbrau Maerzen. Having just been to Budapest, I wanted to see what SF did In that same vein. Well, Paprika outdid most of the restaurants over there and added a great bread unit. Started with the biggest beer ever. No, kind of gigantic huge and delish. And you can get a boot of beer. Who does that? On to the sausage platter. Nice size to split and with that bread and a good spicy mustard with kraut. On to the goulash! Perfect. Nothing more to add. Again, more bread to soak up the sauce (which is fantastic!) and all for a very good price. Service is quick and friendly. I phoned at 9:55 PM last night, in between my last two pieces of work deliverables, it would appear that the restaurant was closed, it might have been a slow night and I left a message for a reservation on Tuesday evening, and asked them to call me back. I'm a believer that one extra step of making a reservation is a good thing to do no matter where you are, even if they say no, what's the worst can happen? At least you tried. Gabrielle called me the next day, during the mid afternoon and confirmed my reservation. I showed up when the restaurant just opened. It was closer to the 24th street BART than I had interpreted from the map. I forgot how easy it is to BART; truth be told, I had forgotten that I had a car and was taking public transit all day long and that sort of worked to my advantage, as my girlfriend who drove would attest, she had to park on 25th and Guerrero and walk back. I asked for a hefeweizen on tap as I waited. Happy Hour special is $1 off. I had taken up the reserved table for two window seat. It was lovely to watch the colorful wall art and the comings and goings of BART people. Bier was served in a frosted glass and was cold and refreshing. I needed a break from work and this was a nice spot to hide in. The cafe style restaurant felt intimate and European, specifically, very Eastern European. There was something about the jazz music playing in the background with simple, unpretentious setting. Gabrielle said that their business partner was Swiss German, her husband Czech and they've been open for two years. This place reminded me of, strangely enough, the new Munich pub and wurst place by my (other) house in Southern China, run by two German expats, now living across the boarder from Macau, in the same complex as I (when I am there). There was something very intimate about this place. It felt that the owners intended to bring a piece of home to a foreign land through food. In my opinion, in the world cuisine scene, Eastern European food does not make it to the top 10, not by a long shot. Too many ready contenders in Mediterranean and Asia to battle for that gourmet scene. But that is not to say that they don't do well in a specific setting. For someone like me, who grew up on those kind of food in the Northeastern party of China bordering Russia, and to this date make her own sauerkraut from scratch, it's also, strangely, a comfort food of a sort. Gabrielle was lovely. She told us that after 35 years of running a Latin restaurant, her aunt retired and left this place for her. She and her husband decided to do something different than just the usual Latin food fare. They along with their business partner decided to make it like how they wanted. When I was in Prague less than 2 years ago, after having just left Munich, I was surprised by how similar the food felt between the two places. I know many Germans, especially Bavarians, don't like to think they are anything like the Eastern Europeans, but to me, and to many others with the same untrained eyes, their food do share similarities. Rather than denying it, I'm DELIGHTED to finally find a restaurant that embrace it. Final parting thought, this is a good atmosphere restaurant. You blink you could miss it. But don't. And try to stop by and say hi to the owner / hostess the next time you get off on the 24th Street BART. read more

DOES SAUSAGES ALWAYS NEED TO BE SERVED WITH A BUN? The answer is no. I ate here about 2 1/2 weeks ago. I have noticed this place at times because it's close to Dance Mission, a studio where I take hip hop dance classes. So I wanted to come here to give this place a try. I ate at Rosemunde about a year ago. If I had to compare the two I would recommended this place over Rosemunde. I don't mind a hipster atmosphere but at Paprika this place straightforward in its approach because the sausages are not trendy, but traditional. In addition the sausages at Paprika are tastier than at Rosemunde. I ordered the sausage combo that included two types of sausage (Hungarian sweet and German spice), mashed potatoes, and sauerkraut. The price at Paprika is more expensive than Rosemunde. At least you get what you pay for at Paprika because their sausages are much bigger than Rosemunde's. The gnocchi were lighter and not as dense; the sauce had a milder flavor than I expected but it was still tasty. They gave us some nice crispy bread to sop up the sauce with but I wouldn't have minded some potatoes too. The pictures I'd say are a little misleading because the plate is actually a flat dish, and is not a shallow "bowl" as we anticipated. The sausages were tasty and hearty-- I tried my BF's sweet and spicy, and the mashed potatoes they came with were also delicious. Call me a sucker for mashed potatoes. The servers were nice and accommodating for our larger party. Additionally, I enjoyed the beer selection here. Wouldn't be a gastropub without good beer. Paprika allowed me to relive my college days with its 1L DAS BOOT!!! A must for you beer lovers. Slightly underwhelming, but decent. Great place with on-point Czech-Hungarian delish dishes. Bruno (Swiss) and Petr (from Moravia) learned midpoint it was my better half's birthday (she's from Prague) and they went out of the way to make it special for her at the end. Very focused menu and the family we went straight for four entrees. All were relished/polished off with the warm bread, and washed down with fresh Pilsner (Budvar) and Hungarian white wine. Cozy, casual, and cash only. That basically sums up Paprika, a Hungarian/Eastern European restaurant in the Mission. The menu here is tantalizingly small--there's a selection of beer/wine, goulash, sausages, salads, and some other small plates. I came for dinner with a group of four on a Friday night--the service was nice and the food was tasty, but the prices were fairly high for what you get. We started with the caprese salad, which was a classic mozzarella and tomato salad, dressed with plenty of olive oil and vinegar, olives, and sun-dried tomatoes. Good, but nothing too special. Then came the entrees--the pork goulash was served with tender (and a bit chewy) gnocchi, and the chicken paprikash came with dark meat chicken and delicious mashed potatoes. By far the best part of both of these dishes was the nicely spiced sauces, which had tons of flavor from the paprika and the stewed meats, and was perfect for dipping with the unlimited baskets of warm bread. We also had the sausage platter, which came with sauerkraut, mustard, ketchup, pickles, and mashed potatoes. Everything here was also decent and tasty, but nothing too unusual or memorable. Overall, this was a nice restaurant experience, and a great place to talk, as it was not too noisy or crowded. The food was nice (but a little pricey)--so why only three stars? We ended up at Paprika as a backup option because our original destination was closed. This is a small Hungarian restaurant just off of the 24th street Bart stop. The menu is fairly simple, mostly consisting of goulash and sausages, which is exactly what we ordered. In addition we got the salumi plate which came with hot bread. I've never been blown away by goulash but I generally enjoy it. This was no different. The sausages were good too, but not so good that I'd come back here specifically for them. I did like the Swiss bockwurst quite a bit though. The meat and cheese plate was forgettable. I don't normally comment on specific drinks that I like but I just have to say that I had one of the best Hefs that I've ever had at Paprika. Weihenstephen Hefe. If you're a fan of wheat beers, this place offers one of the best around and I'd actually say it's worth going out of your way to get one here. Overall, I wouldn't come back to Paprika for the food because "I've experienced better." I definitely might stop in to have another beer if I'm in the area though. read more
