A quintessential American Chinese restaurant. Quite inexpensive, generous portions, food was delicious. Egg drop soup was warm and light - slightly thickened without being gloopy. Crab Rangoon was crisp on the outside and creamy on the inside, and wasn't super fishy like some other places. Fried rice was slightly oversalted, but otherwise savory and flavorful. Broccoli Chicken was really good: sweet and savory. The broccoli was tender without being overcooked and soggy. I called ahead, and my food was just coming out when I arrived. The owner gave me directions better than Google Maps to help me get back to my hotel faster, so my return journey took less than half the time as my trip there. After years of living here in St. Louis I finally found the best place ever, I've ordered so much since I found them and it is all so good, the combo plates hot braised shrimp is my fav and they have the dark fried rice that has the best homestyle flavor like it was cooked on a 100 year old wok ! This is my go to place for Chinese carry out when I am at work. It is a convenient location to get in and out of without any trouble. I work so close, that when I walk in the door to pick my phone order up, it is coming out of the wok. Making it so hot and fresh. I love their fried rice, beef is my favorite. A half order is big enough for me to have two lunches. My lunch yesterday, I wish I would have taken a photo of the crab Rangoon, it was picture perfect and so was the taste. They by far make the best fast Chinese Crab Rangoon I have ever had and I think it may even beat PF Chang's. The two Chinese carry out joints near home, have disappointed us recently. My second St. Louis native food feat included a St. Paul sandwich. These are found in Chinese American restaurants only in St. Louis. I heard Park Chop Suey was the place to get 'em. One source has the origin of the St. Paul sandwich dating as far back as the early 1940s, when Chinese restaurants, desperate to attract the American public to try their cuisine, invented the sandwich to appeal to their palates. According to local legend, the St. Paul Sandwich was invented by Steven Yuen at Park Chop Suey in Lafayette Square, a neighborhood near downtown St. Louis; Yuen named the sandwich after his hometown of St. Paul, Minnesota. The sandwich consists of an egg foo young patty (made with Mung bean sprouts and minced white onions) served with dill pickle slices, white onion, mayonnaise, lettuce, and tomato between two slices of white bread. It was good, but it's probably not something I'd make a point to have all the time. The big, cooked sprouts on an egg were a little weird for me and I couldn't finish the whole meal. Apparently, St. Louis also has their own style of preparing fried rice and crab rangoon, so I added those to my order. The fried rice is darker and does not have peas and carrots in it. In fact, it had nice, big chunks of chicken and as you can see, the crab rangoon is folded into a triangle. And yes, it was very delicious! I must add that I felt really uncomfortable entering and exiting the building. There was a lot of cat calling and as a female traveling solo, I wasn't sure how safe of an area it was. Huge Crab Rangoon or maybe just Rangoon because, as usual, I did not get crab flavor. However, I like cream cheese & there was plenty. These massive things do not make think of a kindly old grandma hand pinching closed each. These were power stuffed & machine pressed closed. Real Chinese? I don't think so. Real good? Yes. After reading Steven B description of the Crab Rangoon & knowing I wanted an order vs 1 on a combination plate, I made the mistake of ordering from the special diet menu. (or asking for extra sauce for it) Steamed shrimp with vegetables- The little bit of sauce is put in a little cup and placed on top. Sauce tastes great, but not enough to flavor the steamed food to my taste. I ended up adding sweet-and-sour and soy sauce from the packets... Everything was steamed al dente (The way I like it). The drawback is realizing how much I eat baby carrots. These were not babies. This is normal at these place, but obvious without sauce. Terrible first experience at this establishment. The individual at the front counter was very rude while taking my order. It seemed as though he did not appreciate the business, nor did he care about his job. Upon eating my food, I realized there was a worm sitting on top of my chicken (see pic). Without hesitation, I immediately tossed my meal and the other four meals out. I didn't waste time by calling to complain, however, I did notify the health department who scheduled a health inspector within the next 10 days. We are huge crab Rangoon fans and these had nothing in them. It was less than a teaspoon in each of the 6 so it wasn't a rare thing. All the food was bland or over cooked. I don't like you , but I love you . . . Park Chop Suey reminds me of an ex girlfriend that you just can't let go. Sure, she was mean to you. Yeah, she probably cheated on you with a far-lesser man or men. Did she steal your favorite t-shirt? Absolutely! But you just keep coming back for more. I was in the mood for Chinese, which isn't all that unusual, so I decided to take a chance on Park Chop Suey. When I arrived in the nearly abandoned parking lot on the corner or Gun Shot and Stab Wound, I was already having regrets. I hadn't even made an order yet. I could have ran without any ties to this place. But I couldn't say no. I entered the empty room to find a giant menu and two chairs placed in the corner for brave carry out patrons. I could see clearly into the kitchen area, where one worker seemed to be cooking away. I didn't even notice the other clerk until I leaned over the counter. I didn't even move when he saw me, just continued to talk on the phone. Meanwhile, I browsed the menu, trying to plot out my order. Finally, he addressed me after taking another phone call. I made inquiries, and he responded in broken English. Once I was satisfied with his information, I made my order, asking for combo plates of Sesame Chicken and General Chicken. The combo plates came with fried rice, soup, and an appetizer. He didn't ask me which appetizer I wanted. "Can I get crab rangoon?" I asked rather pensively. "Too late," he snapped. "It will cost you extra." He showed me a hand menu, which wasn't sitting out, and explained how each combo plate had set appetizers. Crab rangoon would be 55 cent more each, and the minimum debit card purchase was ten dollars. He had already ran my card, and I didn't have any cash. Annoyed and hot from sitting in the lobby, I took the food home. Much to my surprise, the chicken was actually pretty good! It actually tasted like chicken, and the sauces were better than most that we've come across in our time in St. Louis. Also, I was a big fan of the rice. Bottom Line Up Front: I did not get sick. Ventured out on MLK Day for Chinese. Read up on my Yelp to see what was what and was not turned off by the reviews of Park Chop Suey so I made the short trip. First impression was that it was closed. At 1:15 p.m. on a Monday afternoon there was not a single car in the expansive parking lot of this former service station. The "Open" sign in the window was hard to read in the sunlight but when I tried the door it was unlocked so in I go. The vestibule is small with a St Louis-style "bulletproof" window to protect the employees. A large menu board lists the popular takeout entrees. I opted for my "go to" Kung Pao Chicken which I asked be made "extra spicy" and was informed that KPC already comes extra spicy. When I opened up the traditional origami box I was greeted with fresh, abundant chicken and mushrooms and peanuts with ample chilis. The overall sensation of their "extra spicy" was medium at best, but I was not displeased. The white rice was on the smaller portion size for a "dinner" KPC dish, but it worked. For mama I got the Garlic Chicken. My car was filled with the scent of fresh garlic by the time I got home so I was thinking we had a winner. The dish was fairly simple. Lot of chicken, lot of garlic, lot of cooked carrots. Oh well, the dogs love carrots. Overall, mama liked her dish as well. Got a large Chicken Fried Rice as well and it seemed least loved of my order, but passable. The general impression I got from the wait and the sounds in the kitchen, in what was formerly the garage-side of the ex-service station, is that the food was made somewhat fresh to order and not just slopped out of some buffet warming table into styrofoam to feed the delivery orders. While I waited, 2 additional takeout customers arrived, one obviously a businessman from his attire, another college-age patron. While I've certainly had better Chinese takeout in my lifetime travels, I'm definitely a future Park Chop Suey customer. I can only speak for the "Chicken Broccoli", which I can only assume is supposed to have an "and" in the middle. The half order came to just around $6, and honestly exceeded my expectations. Flavour was perfect, came scorching hot, with just enough rice on the side for my liking. The location and atmosphere (empty "pick-up only" style place) definitely leaves something to be desired; but if you're just concerned about your taste buds and your wallet, then I would say give Park Chop Suey a shot for sure. So we were on our way to A-1 Wok but decided to stop in here after running across it on yelp. BIG MISTAKE! Ordered 35.00 worth of food, had a mixture of a lil bit of everything from fried rice to the st paul and chicken wings. The rice was sooo freaking dry, it literally soaked up the soy sauce. I don't think they even fry the rice. The color of the rice was barely brown. The st paul was disgusting and tasted like the bottom of the skillet. I never knew you could mess up a st paul sandwich. AND they give you mayo packs instead of putting on the sandwich! The gravy was salty but was necessary to consume the rice. The chicken was OK but lacked any flavor. And the french fries were soggy and a complete waste! Now my stomach is churning and I'm praying I don't have to spend the rest of the night on the toilet!! My wife and I ordered Chinese delivery from Park Chop Suey thinking it might be good to check out more Chinese restaurants in St. Louis. We ordered pork fried rice, egg rolls, and beef with snow peas. The food came quickly and was nice and hot. The food tasted fine. The egg rolls were too crispy and hard on their shells. The fried rice was too salty. But the beef and snow peas was really good. The snow peas were crisp and fresh and the beef portions were generous. I seem to be just beyond the delivery range for a few different restaurants, and while Park Chop Suey is actually a little farther they never quibble about how many people I'm order for or if I am purchasing $20 or more (Red Door, West End Wok).
