My visit to Pastry Cat is only one star less than perfect because the long line to get in was really to get a beverage. Blessedly, there were two Caramel Apple Crumble cakes left. So...if ever there was a perfect bite, this was it!!! Each bite greeted your tongue with a layer of caramel, followed by a slightly tart apple slice, a moist spiced cake and then a crumb topping that was not dry!! Pastries and cookies are both unique and expertly produced. Croissants are Crunchy, flakey, worthy of a French cafe. Try the pistachio cherry or the chocolate butter cookie. The ham and cheese croissant was probably the best I've ever had! Real ham (not lunch meat) with aged cheese. My waistline is happy they are only open weekends at this time. Split if your partner is willing as items are quite rich. (But I'm not splitting the ham and cheese next time). Downside: Coffee not as good as Temple, but then nothing around town is. Short wait but don't be discouraged as line goes fast. Sometimes no place to sit, snag as soon as possible - better outdoors if weather permits. Inside is too noisy for easy conversation. Love to see the detailed reviews and I can agree with a majority of them. I'll keep this short; staff are friendly, food was delicious, and it is very cute inside. However, the matcha latte was very light - it's giving I drink matcha for aesthetics. There is a limit on pastries yet even with said limit, they continue to sell out bright and early and it discourages consumers from wanting to even try to come back to snag a pastry. Like another review stated, they just can't keep up with the demand and I can't help but feel that the beginning is the most crucial time to build clientele. What do you mean you open at 8a and sellout of pastries by 9:30a? And to only be open Friday-Sunday... And when you finally do get a chance to snag some pastries, the pricing is steep. I saw this place randomly when getting food at Druthers. I went in and the place was packed. I got a vanilla canella and a mushroom pastry. Both were amazing! Parking is in the neighborhood. !!Hot Take Alert!! *Best* laminated pastries in the Sac area. The bountiful thin and crispy layers in the ham & cheese pain suisse and the kimchi cheese danish.....pheeew. Taste-wise, I'd say the pastries here are pretty above average based on my whole haul. Love how fermented the kimchi is on the kimchi cheese danish (though wished that the kimchi was cut into smaller pieces as for each bite I felt like I was removing a whole chunk on top of the pastry lol). The ham in the ham & cheese pain suisse is a bit sweet for my liking but if you like honey ham you'd enjoy it. Calamansi almond croissant is twice-baked-style, which is my favorite style of croissant, so bonus points from me. Scrumptiously buttery and crispy. Could've used slightly less calamansi curd filling as it's on the really rich side. Heavenly glaze on the persimmon pecan scone! I prefer this scone over the shiitake bacon cheese scone, which is also tasty but I'm not fully on board with the gummy texture of the shiitake mushroom slices in it. Sobadoodle cookie got its name because one of its ingredients is buckwheat flour, which is also used to make soba noodles. Best ham and cheese croissant in Sacramento hands down. Given the regional competition this is high praise. The croissant dough is flaky and the ham and cheese are generously portioned and well seasoned. We tried a few other pastries and all were delicious. From savory sausage scones to flaky almond yuzu croissants everything was delicious and meticulously prepared. Expect to wait in line as word is getting out about how good this food is. On Saturdays they are located inside Offbeat coffee as a pop-up. Seating and ambiance are pretty typical coffee shop. First time here at their new location, great service with the cashier and food delivery. I used to go to their pop-ups @ Off-beat coffee. Unfortunately this is where the experience turned sour.. I had some of their water out of their self-serve dispenser and I got a gulp of bleach water. So I tried to wash it down with the latte that I purchased, but it just made my drink taste bland. I tried eating the Cara Cara almond croissant, at least that cut through the bleach taste just a bit. I told one of the workers and at least she took the dispenser to the back right away. At the end of my experience, my throat was dry and closing up. read more

Never not impressed with anything I've gotten at the pop-ups! The quality is amazing, the service is friendly and it's a plus that it's located in Offbeat hehe. One thing I think people need to really understand before coming here and leaving a review is just how much this baker has earned and grown her own cult following, and naturally too. Her pop up's were already selling out every time I've gone to her for years, and on their soft opening day the line was the craziest I've ever seen for any similar business in Sacramento. Maybe SF, but not here. Luckily I knew this would be the case and got there early. The "Pastry Cat" bakes all of her pastries with love, and now that I've tried her husband's cooking too I am convinced love is abundant in that household. When you look around the dining room you see so many smiles, you see families laughing everywhere, the vibe is just so inexplicably right. So much attention to detail was put in to getting this atmosphere to look clean and welcoming. The open kitchen concept is going to be used in some magnificent ways, I can already tell! Both times I've come in I've chatted with the most random and lovely people. That doesn't happen to me in other places often. The pastries here offer something unique, seasonal, creative, and seemingly personal to Nariya. The ham and cheese is elevated with delicious Gruyère, her zataar croissant bun is exactly the kind of savory pastry I never knew I needed, and her fruit selection sings to my tropical and seasonal palate. I am looking forward to the return of her donuts which often change with the fruits of the season. My second visit I got to try the French toast which I believe is her husband Scott's side of the business, and I am absolutely blown away at how fast the service was on this dish. It was out in minutes. The home baked shokupan was so perfect. I am so happy to see that day 3 of being barely open they are even selling out of the biscuit sandwich now in addition to all the pastries. I can't wait to try that one next time! To be honest, I was underwhelmed with both the pastries and the experience. Firstly, the popup is in a cafe and has a line through a single door that can get quite congested. Parking is also limited. As for the pastries, I felt they were fine. It seems to be a home kitchen style business so it seemed most of these were not fresh out the oven but made say hours to perhaps longer before. It's perhaps simply not possible for a pop-up style business to make the amount that there is demand for (like a larger business like Arsicault can do, with constant freshest-out-the-oven pastries). Also the price at Pastry Cat is not low, comparable to say Moonbelly which I feel offers a fresher, better pastry in Sacramento. Nonetheless, the baked goods scene overall in Sacramento still needs work and it's always good to see another business try to take it on. read more

Accidentally learned about this amazing pop-up! I was in Offbeat studying when I saw folks lineup for the popup. I got the Everything Danish, Ham Croissant, Cardamom, bun, and the cookies. I can't believe how I've enjoyed every single bite of all of each pastry! Each was unique, flavorful, and fresh. I literally want to go back to try their other pastries. That's how good it is! I was nervous to try the almond, pistachio cherry croissant because I thought it might be too many flavors all in one pastry, but it was seriously the best pastry I've ever tried. Just not my jam... but it's obvious it's many people's ! I've now been twice and I will probably try it one more time but just to get a basic coffee and plain croissant. The first time the line was about 45 min long and I tried four pastries. All were too sweet and rich for me. We took one bite of each and tossed them (which is tough with the heafty $$). The second time we got the granola bowl and pork bowl and two coffee drinks. The coffees were fine and we did not like either bowl. The yogurt was good but way too much granola and sauce. The cherries were sweet also and the sauce was super sweet, more like a desert topping. I dug for bites that had more yogurt and left the rest. I had one bite of the pork bowl and tried to dig for more rice to balance out the sauce and then was done. My husband finished it but said it was only because he was starving. It was super rich and way too sauce heavy. Also I wasn't sure what I was tasting but the flavor was off putting to me The place is super popular so I know I'm the small percentage of people but it's not my style of food. I love interesting meals but this was a miss in my mind. Also, it doesn't really feel like it fits in the neighborhood. I feel badly for the people who live there whose streets are now taken over by cars. It doesn't seem like much foot or bike traffic. Also the music inside is like house music so be prepared if you're looking for a quiet brunch. On this most recent visit I caught her at one of her usual spots inside of Majka Bakes on Saturdays, and I was excited to try her version of the Korean garlic cream cheese buns. It was super stuffed and didn't skimp on the cream cheese, and I liked the texture of the crumbs on top. We arrived there one hour later & should have known better as we missed out on her honey maple pecan tart! Her pastries are really TDF. Her passion for baked goods & desserts really do show as they are of high quality & consistently well made. They don't hurt my teeth like another local bakery does which means she's doing something right! Nariya is a Thai-American pastry chef & owner of this bakery btw. We actually first heard about her on GoodDay Sacramento twice! Back in 2020 & earlier this year! She's professionally trained as she had attended the Culinary Institute of America & received her Associates Degree in Baking & Pastry back in 2012. She has worked in various kitchens in the Bay Area ranging from a chocolate shop, bakery to a variety of restaurants from casual to Michelin starred. We have tried many of her pastries for instance: almond croissants, honey maple pecan tart, caneles, coconut & Meyer lemon bostock, carrot cake, yuzu meringue tart & her delicious matcha almond cookies. I finally got to try Pastry Cat this morning at a popup Scorpio coffee. Oh my goodness! Everything was so good. Hubby said it was the best focaccia he's ever had. I really enjoyed the coconut calamansi bostock and the donuts. After this experience, I'm positive that everything they make is magical. I was really excited to try this place out but was a bit disappointed. 50% of the items were good and the other 50% weren't. I got a vanilla rum canelé and the outside was very crunchy but the inside was not very custard like. I also got the yuzu creamsicle panna cotta which was very good! My cousin got the cinnamon roll and the filled donut holes. She said the icing on the cinnamon roll was quite good and had hints of orange, but the roll itself was quite dry so she was a bit disappointed in it as a whole. But she said the donut holes were amazing. Service was very friendly and efficient. Parking was bad since it is in the middle of downtown. Small interior since it is a pop up location. Prices were a bit high for me personally. Happened to visit Scorpio Coffee on the day Pastry Cat was doing a pop up inside. They had a choice of six items that day on July 31, 2021: 1) Mushroom & Cheese Danish, 2) Peach & Kinako Almond Danish, 3) Caramelized Onion & Cheese Scone, 4) Canelé - Vanilla Rum or Cocoa Kahlua, 5) Nutella & Banana Turnover, and 6) Bostock. See picture; items are named from left to right, top then bottom. I tried the Peach & Kinako Almond Danish. Kinako is roasted soybean flour. I didn't think I would taste the kinako since it's a pretty faint flavor. Upon eating it, I confirmed that I could not taste the kinako, but the danish was delicious! It was honestly one of the best pastries I've had. The peaches tasted fresh and the pastry itself was nice & flaky. Hoping to see this business again and try more of their selection! read more

It's been some time since I've made it to their pop up. It's about time their following has grown. The miso butter and choc cookies are as good as I remembered.
