Unfortunately my review has to be amended. I'm disappointed in Patio. I've gone there probably 2 dozen times now and although the burger is still superb and the hot dogs can't be beat, I can't say the rest of the menu is much to rave about. The gyros - the meat is good, but the tzatziki is much, MUCH too sweet and overcomes the taste of the meat. I'll head over to Hella's next time. The bbq beef sandwich - blah. The bbq sauce is definitely a generic bottle sauce. Absolutely nothing to write home about. However, here is where I have to draw the line. What is up with your fries, Patio? They are so bland and either under cooked (cold and limp) or over cooked (warmish, but greasy and limp) that they are inedible. Seriously, tell your cook to stop making huge batches of fries at once and cook the fries when someone orders. If it takes a little longer, then so be it. Because, right now, those fries are gross. And ordering cheese fries doesn't help either. You can still taste the bland through all the cheese goodness. It's a shame....you're a hot dog/fries stand, you make good dogs, burgers, etc. so, please up the ante with the fries! That's all I ask! read more

My fiancé grew up around the corner from this place and has been coming here since he was a kid. Naturally, whenever I was visiting him we always managed to find ourselves here. And now that i live in the neighborhood too, we're always here when we want good food quick. Patio will never disappoint, and their menu has so much on it that you could seriously come here 3 times every week for a month and not get bored (but you just may need bigger pants). I'm not a big fan of gyros but my fiancé claims they are the best he's ever eaten. I personally rotate between the chicago dog, chicken tender sandwich or the chicken pita-- and I always get a side of their spicy (cajun) fries (a must!). And don't forget to try their soups--they have a new one every day and they are all made from scratch. All of the chicken noode/rice soups are amazing! I love the burgers and the gyros here. Ok, so I know that you can go to Moody's get a good burger and that Hellas on Bryn Mawr has good gyros but what makes this place special is the service. The people that work here are just extremely nice. The other day I was in here waiting on my order and witnessed an act of kindness. From what I could gather, the woman in front of me did not have enough cash on her to pay for her & her son's lunch. The woman who owns the place (I think) just let her have the extra items. The best thing about this place is the family owned business atmosphere and the idea that they treat their customers like family as well. No wait its the fact that they have old school tamales that I remember from my childhood. Latin folks may not appreciate them compared to their traditional tamales but these things are classics and its hard to find them in the stores. On third thought, the best thing about this place is the fact that because my mom loves these tamales and I can't find them too many places, they sell me extra tamales (frozen) that they have in the freezer so my mom can cook them at home when she wants them. How many places will do that for a customer. Um their chili with a tamale is great on a cold day as well. More of those days are coming! Thinking about it some more, I'd have to say the best thing about this place is the 1/2 lb bacon cheese burger... Yeah there are fancy burger joints in the city. we all see them on a regular basis. but for my money, taste buds, and family friendly vibe I'll take this beautiful beast more often then not. No big frills, just a well cooked burger (well I actually like mine medium) with a toasted bun, and excellent fresh ingredients on the burger. I guess the best thing about this place will occur the next time I visit them which will be soon as my mouth starts watering as I post this picture of the cheeseburger. Damn that's tasty!! I can't find a better Italian beef than here, and trust me, I tried. I used to be a diehard Portillo's fan, but after tasting Patio's Italian beef (hot and wet), I can't go back to Portillo's - it's just too bland. Johnnie's Beef is a decent rival, but much too far from me. Anyway, the Italian beef itself is 5 stars for me, but the gyro, Italian combo, and hot dog, while decent, weren't anything memorable, so that's why I docked them a star. I've been going to this place since I was 12. When I worked at the Library next door I would frequent this place very much. There is something about their sauce for the Gyro that brings back good memories. The neighborhood is changing and you have to appreciate a classic Chicago Bite to Eat place like Patio Beef. Grabbing a bag of fries and heading to my old Comic Shop or home to play video games made my day. Now I left a year ago and came back to visit with my new family. It made me happy to bring my wife to the place I grew up eating at, she loved the fries of course. I had to eat an Italian Beef because they do it so right. She was in love with the Old Chicago Attitude and Accent that is in the place. Lots of regulars. Tears filled my eyes. The same friendly daughters work there, looks like Dad is too. Thank you guys for filling my belly for so many years. I will always come back for a bite to eat whenever I am in the neighborhood. So folks... My first time visiting, I ordered an Italian Beef dipped with hot peppers and a small order of fries with a small fruit punch drink. The beef was mediocre. Nothing special to remember about it. Even after adding extra peppers on it, it still tasted a bit plain but not bad. The fries were nice and crispy, I was upset I didn't order a large amount. The fruit punch is also delicious. I really don't understand why it's so hard to find a place that sells hot dogs on poppyseed buns or why I have such an obsession with them but this place has it and is therefore, my favorite neighborhood hot dog joint. That along with their cheap prices, large menu and clean dining area (+ a tv playing American Idol on Tuesdays) makes this place a definite must if you live in the neighborhood. I used to come here all the time as a kid with my cousins after visiting Edgewater library and loved sitting in their indoor patio. Coming here brings back memories of long hot summer days when you were young and had nothing to worry about (except when your library books were due!). read more

I love Patio Beef! You wouldn't think that you could get a healthy meal at a place like this, but I'm addicted to their Greek Salad with a chicken kabob on top. The salad comes with Romaine lettuce, feta cheese, red onions, pepperoncini, stuffed grape leaf, kalamata olives, tomatoes and cucumber. The chicken kabob is delicious, perfectly grilled and seasoned. This is served with a delicious lemon vinaigrette. Yum! Another favorite for me on their menu is the Grecian Chicken. going to loyola university, where there is a subway, mcdonald's, and chipotle a hop skip away, i never ventured too far except when i went to that ethiopian restaurant (diamond) but i found another treasure. patio beef is a small, comfort food servin' joint. we ordered the half greek chicken with rice. it was really good and pretty cheap. we ordered 3 of those for $20.44! not too shabby on the wallet. there is a parking lot there for easy parking and pretty close to the campus (loyola university). so try something new and different!! i'm talking to you loyola students. read more
