God bless Paul's...but more specifically Paul's Elbow Room. Whether it's a busy or slow night you can pretty much count on a good time based on the strong/cheap drinks alone. It's totally the living room of the twentysomething downtown Couve' crowd nowadays. It's a conversation bar for sure...no pool tables or dart boards...just booths and a bar. Good atmosphere if you're into the dive bar thing. Probably not your cup of tea if you want anything more than a comfortable place to sit and have a few drinks with friends. read more

Quick service but I won't be back. Cheap food. ... the hash browns were crispy on the outside but tasted like raw shredded potato on the inside. The butter on the toast is NOT butter and tastes like cheap butter-flavored oil. The oil/grease they fried the potatoes in tasted like fish for some reason. Coffee was weak and pretty flavorless. Price wasn't all that great either. .. OVER $11 for two eggs, bacon, shredded hash browns (out of a bag) & a cup of weak coffee - and then I left a $2 tip because I felt like the wait staff did a good job. I really don't think that the cook did a bad job either with what he had to work with (cheap product) although I do believe s/he could have used some salt and pepper to flavor it up. Disgusting, my food wasn't even edible. The gravy resembled poop and saltier than the ocean. My salad was soggy and clearly frozen. My claw strips were burnt. The fries were good, crunchy, my boyfriends hamburger was greasy and hard to eat. The service was good. All in all I will never return. read more

I really like this place!! Usually breakfast food is covered in butter or oil, but I can say this place definitely doesn't do that. Food is fresh, portions are really good but not overwhelming. Randomly stopped her when driving through Vancouver. Looks cosy and warm, a traditional diner. We came in 2.30 pm on a Sunday and we're told that they're closing 3pm. No problemo for us. We waited for someone to come take our order for about 15 minutes which felt odd since they were closing soon. But fine, they were probably busy cleaning up and stuff. So... I'm thinking burgers here might be good and I chose a Chili burger. Since I'm not from the States, reading the menu here sometimes feels like cracking a code. Menu telling me burger is topped with chili made me think the spice, chili peppers but instead it was the dish chili, meaning beans in a sauce. So my burger comes drowning in chili, beans with sauce. Not something I would have ordered. But fine, these things happen, a misunderstanding. However, their menu says burgers are "Served On A Toasted Bun With Tomato, Lettuce, Pickle." Mine had none of these. My burger consisted of two anaemic looking buns, hamburger patty and ton of beans in sauce (=chili), melted cheese and some onions on top. No vegetables whatsoever! Nothing green. I must say, I will remember this burger as one of the worst I've ever eaten. I also had fries on the side and they were fine, regular fries. Nothing extraordinary. Staff was super friendly though and the place looked warm and cosy. Unfortunately the burger was such a disappointment I can't give but 2 stars. Perhaps a different choice would have made me happier. read more

Good spot for a quiet quick breakfast. We stopped here on our way home from Portland after deciding that the hotel restaurant just couldn't make edible food. We got seated with no wait and the service was quick and attentive. No hovering. The food came quickly, and was hot, fresh and the quantities were ample. The food is fantastic but it took 40 minutes to get it. It may have just been a rough day for them but I was not pleased by the long wait. Coffee tastes like water also. Again, maybe an off day for them but I'm not sure I'd go back. I've been there many times and never had any of these issues. read more

Waited 55 minutes after placing my order for a egg and bacon omelete. The omelete arrived and was filled with burnt bacon, rendering it almost inedible. In addition, the hash browns ( hash blacks) were overcooked and crunchy and the toast had been buttered after the cook scraped off most of the black, burnt residue. What a disappointment. Ate less than a third of this meal. Had severe stomach upset for nearly 24 hours afterwards. Never again ! I'll be speaking with my lawyer about this experience. My husband and I went to Paul's for the first time. It is like walking back in time a few decades, with echoes of 60s, 70s and 80s in the decor. It was clean though, so this was more quaint than anything. I ate the veggie omelette which normally has no cheese but the waitress was happy to let me add it. I chose cheddar. Very good omelette, served with potatoes. My husband ordered the biscuits and gravy special, which included two eggs and choice of sausage or bacon. He chose sausage. He was very happy with his breakfast as well. The service was very good. My coffee and water didn't get down to the halfway mark. My only criticism is that the coffee could have been stronger. This is a very old style diner and the quality is very poor. Tastes like everything is pre mixed, pre packaged and microwaved. The cooks and bussers gave me super creepy vibes and I won't be back. We took the fam for breakfast here today. Group of 7, no reservations at about 11 AM on a Sunday. No wait to be seated. The waitress was awesome, very personable and efficient. Many orders of the french toast combo. The food did take a bit to come out, but when it did, it was all very tasty, right temperature, just as we had ordered. You get a lot for your dollar here. First visit. Excellent service by Samara. Ordered a burger medium rare, but it came well done. She immediately scooped it up and very quickly brought one cooked as ordered. Tasty and juicy. Paul's restuarant has delicious bacon cheeseburgers and fries. I also really like their country fried steak breakfast platter with pancakes. The service here is good and the servers are friendly. The only problem I've ever had here was I asked for no gravy and I got lots of gravy. They fixed this problem right away, apologized and came back several times to make sure we had everything we needed to have a great visit. The only reason I didn't give them five stars is because they close early. I have wanted to go here several times and they were closed by seven p.m. on a week day and by three p.m. on a Sunday. I am giving Paul's 4 stars for the following reasons. 1 Star - Cleanliness and condition of the interior. 1 Star - Outstanding wait staff, that was courteous professional, attentive and had a great attitude. 1 Star - Menu had a good variety with easy to read explanations of what was being served. 1 Star - Food was really outstanding and I will elaborate below. I wish I could give this two but I will only allow one star per category. 0 Star - First impressions walking in the door, needs a real update with personality of who Paul is. I don't know if this is a good way of critiquing a restaurant but it is my way. I try to be fair and give credit where credit is due. Let me elaborate on what was best. The food!!!! The food was outstanding! When we asked the waitress what she thought was best she pointed us to the farmers omelet. There is an entire portion of the menu devoted to breakfast selections and they were all described well this may be the restaurants niche. It was just not one of those breakfast for lunch kind of days for me so I continued to peruse the menu. Looking at the entrees and sandwiches I could tell that things were very much basic American (not a bad thing, I am American and proud of it). I ordered the four piece chicken dinner my daughter the bacon cheeseburger, and my wife ordered the Ruben sandwich. When the food showed up in a very reasonable amount of time it was just slightly off from what I pictured in my mind. In my mind was Denny's and what showed up was a huge step up from there. My chicken dinner was perfect sizing of four pieces cut from a small fryer. The crispiness on the chicken crust had a nice structure but was not the least bit greasy. Baked potato was appropriately done and ready for toppings of sour cream & butter. The carrots on the plate were the real flair that gave the dish perfect color. They were a mix of yellow and orange carrots that gave the plate a stunning look and they were cooked to perfection. Each element of the meal was outstanding and the fact that my ice tea never went empty really topped off the experience. My wife and daughter both commented on their sandwiches that they were really outstanding. My daughter has a reputation in my house of being a food critique in that she doesn't like to try new things. She loved my wife's Ruben sandwich. If she gives a good review of food she has never tasted before then I know it is really good. She also liked her bacon cheeseburger and said it was quite good. My first impressions were this. The exterior of the building was not exactly a magnet. We are out of town people and If my wife & daughter were not so hungry and likely to take a chunk out of my arm I would have kept looking. The exterior did not really catch my eye as something that I just had to try. However after stepping inside the facility my impression was that it was clean and in good condition overall and well kept on the interior. The entire restaurant really needs a facelift with updating. I really want to know who Paul is, I know he makes some really great food and manages a great wait staff but who is he really? I think there is a story to be told about Paul that does not come out in the interior. I am guessing that Paul is actually a really fun person that loves people, and probably has a pretty good sense of style that is not really reflected on the interior. I highly recommend Paul's and know that there is a lot of content between those two book covers. read more

I recently began working in Downtown Vancouver where I periodically need to find a lunch spot. I saw Paul's in the area and so today I looked online for their phone # and menu so I could place a quick to-go order. Their on-line menu stated they have a Tuna sandwich/ choice of bread with either potato salad or chips for $5.50. Good deal, right? I made that order and requested cheese, lettuce tomato and onion on the sandwich. I assumed the cheese would cost a little more but was expecting to get out of there with about a $6.50 to $7 bill. NOPE... $9.50!!! I asked why so much and she said they charged $1 for the cheese and .99 cents for each added condiment! ARE YOU KIDDING ME!? Who charges for lettuce, tomato or onion on a cold sandwich. I begrudgingly pay but that's not even the worst of it. The WORST tuna salad EVER. It was so wet that not only did it slop out of the sandwich but the bread became soaked as well. It was like they didn't drain it before adding mayo. Also forgot my expensive slice of cheese! NO CHEESE! They didn't even get the order correct. So, as you can see I'm not happy but it did teach me a lesson. DON'T FORGET TO BRING YOUR LUNCH TO WORK. I really hate wasting money and I might as well have lit a $10 bill on fire...smh :( read more
