In order to write this review I must jump in my time machine, put on a backpack, flip flops, cargo shorts, Nike shirt with cut off sleeves, grow a wild beard that is very Chewbacca(ish?), and go back to college! Man was there anything better for a young man living off of partial financial aid and a 15 hour a week job that paid minimum wage than Peanuts. Where else can you buy a cheeseburger, french fries, and drink for under $4? Pick me-Pick me-Pick me-hey I know......NOWHERE! I practically lived at Peanuts during my time as SJSU and ate everything from the bacon and cheese omelette to the chicken teryaki and believe me when you are a starving college kid it all tastes like a Five Star Restaraunts food in Florence, Italy! The funniest memories will always be the mid afternoon pitchers while people watching and then realizing you are late for Anthropolgy class only to stumble in drunk on a pop quiz! Tests were always so much easier while intoxicated! Especially, the multiple choice ones! Anyways, would I ever go to Peanuts for the food, no. Would I go for the memories, ABSOLUTELY. The good thing about this place is that the alcohol is really cheap, and even cheaper when it's happy hour^_^. location is also nice because it's across the street from SJSU. i wish it was closer to duncan hall though because all my classes are usually over there..sigh for being a science major= [ so i've only tried 2 things on the menu which is the tuna melt and the avocado, bacon, cheese, tomato omelet. honestly, i think the food is a miss or hit. they change their fries often so i'm usually disappointed when i don't see the ones i like. sometimes the tuna comes out really toasted and warm! how i like it! but i would have to say majority of the time, the tuna is soggy and the bread isn't toasted enough. the omelet comes in a HUGE portion but i don't think it's that good. it needs more meat! but "you get what you pay for" so i guess that explains it. what's nice is SJSU internet works in this location so free wifi! the music is interesting... the last time i came in they played (in order) eagles- hotel california berlin- take my breath away warren g- regulate true story read more

I come to Peanuts about once a year and I've had everything from their sandwiches, burgers, and breakfast options. The appeal to Peanuts is the low prices, huge servings, and the atmosphere of the place. So I get why people like it, cause I like those things about Peanuts too, but I don't think the place deserves 4 stars on Yelp. The reason for a low rating is that the quality of the food and the ingredients are one notch low of average. The ingredients taste cheap and like it came from a generic brand from a grocery store. With that being said, eating at Peanuts is not for the sake of treating your taste buds, but for satisfying your hunger and saving a few bucks. The 4 stars Peanuts has is attributable to price and portion size, and it's obvious in all the 4-5 star reviews here, which contain minimal to no mentioning of the actual quality of the food. If price and portion size were not a factor of rating then this place would be somewhere between 1.5 to 2.5 stars. read more

Came in to get a quick bite to go. I ordered the Philly cheese steak which comes with steak fries. The cheese steak came out hot. The meat was plain and had no flavor to it. I even put some spritz of hot sauce on it but it did not do justice. There is a good amount of mushrooms in it which I really liked. Bread was soft with sesame seeds. But my overall experience with the cheese steak was meh. The steak fries are like the fries you get from red robin. So I really wished I had the Red Robin seasoning to sprinkle over these fries. $7 for a meal. I was hungry. I ate it all but it wasn't anything I'd come back for. read more

I stumbled across this cozy little cafe when I went to have lunch with my friend who works at City Hall, right around the corner. Apparently it's a go-to place for SJSU students who want a quick, cheap, but filling lunch. And all the thank you plaques from the fraternities hung on their walls says it all. They love it here! I'll be honest though, walking in, I was really confused with what to do... do I wait to be seated? Do I walk up to the register? Where do I order? ... Well, my confused look said it all, so the guy at the register kindly helped us out and pointed us to the kitchen counter. Ah. Enlightened. It does help that there's a sign that says "Order Here" ... I just didn't notice it... lol So... basically you order what you want at the kitchen counter, wait for them to write you an order slip, take that slip and bring it to the cash register, and pay for your food using CASH only. There. I saved you the trouble. Your welcome :P Another awesome tip: they have daily lunch specials! Monday-Friday from 11-3pm, they have a different sandwich you can get for $4.39 with a side of fries or salad (their prices went up from what I saw from other reviewers). I got their Thursday special, the Chicken Salad Sandwich with fries, and it was pretty good. The bread was toasted and they did not skimp out on the chicken salad or fries! To my surprise, it was a very filling meal! Could have been better if it had more flavor though. I found the chicken salad to be a bit bland, so I had to amp it up a bit with some hot sauce. My friend got the Egg Salad Sandwich and I had a bite of that too. Nice big chunks of egg (instead of being all mushed up into a paste like some places) but also quite bland. I love hash browns and sausages. I got their breakfast deal which was around 3.50 for 2 eggs, toast, hashbrowns, and sausages. For 20 cents more, you can get a cheese omelette which looked very good. They give you A LOT of hashbrowns, which are really good. This was my first time here, and I will definitely come back! You can't beat the price for some good old fashion breakfast. Came to peanuts because I was really in the mood for some comforting breakfast food for lunch one day. Peanuts really satisfied my cravings with the Western omelette that came with hash browns and toast. For some reason, the toast was unexpectedly SUPER good for just being toast. The hash browns could have been cooked a little more because mine was not as crispy as I would have liked it. The omelette itself was great and would order it again; it was packed with veggies and dices of ham! It was a lot food for the price, that's for sure. Would have been three-four stars, but my boyfriend found a piece of hair in his omelette, which was definitely not his and definitely not okay. After my boyfriend found the piece of hair, it forced me to be more cautious about finding stuff in my food as well. The silverware needs to be cleaned better too. Cleanliness is a big deal for me when eating a meal, and I'm not sorry for being picky about it in this review/rating. Peanuts is almost literally a hole-in-the-wall eatery that is a God-send for college students on a budget. It's breakfast all day at Peanuts, and their servings are more than enough to satisfy. You can damn near drown in hash browns, and then demand more not only because they're so awesome, but because you can afford it. Peanuts is FANTASTIC! It is a staple for almost every SJSU student. The staff are friendly and ALWAYS get your order right. The price is unbeatable. They only take cash so make sure to have that when you go, and it is usually pretty busy but the 10 minute wait is well worth it and they are not open on Sundays. Peanut's is a hole in the wall and looking at it you would never think much. However, once you get inside you can see the relationships they have formed with their customers which is always a good sign. I did not come here with high expectations, all I wanted was a good cheap meal which is what majority of these reviews praise about. While the prices are cheap, I don't think that is an excuse to serve me black burnt toast that had some green spots on the bread. There are no vegetables on the menu so I'm pretty sure that was old bread they served me, gross. On top of that I had to listen to "Strip" by Chris Brown blasting from their jukebox at 9am, weird. Bacon was definitely cheap quality, majority of it was fat. Scrambled eggs looked more like an omelet and the hash browns were not even crispy. My bf had the rib eye and that meat actually was pretty good, it was a special not listed on the main menu. CASH ONLY but they will validate parking. We parked around the corner in some Asian plaza a block away since street parking was full. Everything Is self served here so no waiter service. I've been an SJSU student for 2 years already and I tried Peanuts two days ago. I went with my friend and he showed me the ropes. Order then move over to another counter to pay, and then use your receipt to pick up your food. I ordered the Western Omelette and it's pretty good! The hashbrowns are great too and obviously not the frozen type like at iHop or Denny's. The noise level was loud since a soccer game was on, but it's a very down to earth diner and I can see why they get so many customers. Service was pretty quick too. What can I say - Peanuts is a great place to eat. Breakfast plates are huge - I think the portion size is geared toward growing college students. I'm no longer able to finish a whole plate without entering coma zone. Then again, maybe eating steak for breakfast isn't the greatest idea. The mushroom burger and the avocado burger are both great. Love this place to pieces! My boyfriend and I are regulars here! We started coming here to eat during high school days after cross country and track practices. Minh is the owner and he's a super sweet guy and his wife is sometimes around as well. I love them both! Food here is great!! I always get the omelettes! I always get the western or the tomatoes, avocado, mushroom and cheese one! Tuna sandwiches are good too! My boyfriend always get steak, eggs and rice! $8 for steak yall! This is about as good as it gets when it comes to campus food. Breakfast: they have specials that are insanely cheap. a plate full of eggs and hash browns with toast will run you just about $3.50, and it's not much more to add bacon or sausage. They're good, too! Eggs are always done pretty well (though I order over hard, so it's no huge difficulty), and the has browns are never burnt or still wet. Lunch: Lunch specials here are great, $4 buys you a sandwich and fries. Lots of fries. The sandwiches are great. I normally order a turkey club 'cause it's delicious and still kinda healthy, but the philly cheesesteak here is an absolute monster. It's real steak with tons of real cheese and it's huge. You'll be stuffed after half, and it's supercheap to boot. Dinner: The same as above, but plus beer. But hey, you could get beer at lunch, too. I won't judge. To avoid: the burgers. They're small patties and they come out a little dry. They're cheap for a reason. But hey, the menu's massive so it shouldn't hurt too much to pick something else. The same people have been running this place for years and years and the they're cool people if it's not busy. For a hungry broke student, this place is definitely as good as it gets. Yeah, the place does get a little dingy during the rush hours but when you need a table and are hawk-eyeing a table you might as well clean the crap up so you tag the table as your since you've cleaned it. (That's how I do it ;) Don't steal my idea.) The daily specials are seriously great. You could make the food yourself but it's a pain in the butt when you have to walk 15-20 minutes to your place or drive 20 minutes to your house if you're a commuter to make a sandwich with all the goodies and fry some fries, I'd rather pay my $6 for a meal right then and there. Ive eaten here twice in the past week. The prices are great if you can deal with the COCKROACHES. The first time I found an adolescent cockroach near the coffee creamer. Thinking it was a fluke I gave them the benefit of the doubt and returned a few days later for a second meal. I kid you NOT, there was an adult cockroach climbing the walls like spiderman defying gravity a foot from my head. That was the last straw. I wonder how this place passes health inspections. Update: 3/14/06 This is becoming a ritual with me and my friend since we have this big break in between classes. I constantly get the Philly Cheesesteak here, but I decided to go for the specials on Tuesday, which is the BLT and fries or salad. I didn't think the meal was going to fill me up, but the fries creeped up on me and expanded what stomach I already have into something rounder. There's nothing special about this sandwich, but it's good enough to get you through 2 hours of class for something meaty without putting you to sleep during class. If you get there between 11 and 3 p.m., the meal will cost you under $4. 2/28/06: When I need a lunch that will give me that extra boost to survive another day at school, this is the place. The Philly Cheesesteak sandwich is just too big for the roll to contain the bell peppers and onions. As I close the roll together and take my first bite, the grease just comes oozin' down the side of my hand and onto my plate. I reach for my bottled water just to free my mouth from the cheese that is built up inside it. Ahhhh yeah. It's like seeing a Carl's Jr. commercial. "drip goes the grease. drip, drip, drip." By far, this has to be my favorite dish here. The breakfast is also plentiful. LOL this place cracks me up. I love that you can get a full on breakfast for $2.99 before 11am. PERFECT for poor SJSU students! They have a pretty big menu, and always accommodate any change you want in your meal. I usually order a grilled cheese with all kinds of extra veggies in it, and they're always cool about it. I have no idea how their ticket writing system works... always been a mystery to me. When you order from the cook, he literally scribbles on the ticket, even after special requests/changes, and you bring it to the cashier and he knows exactly what you've ordered. Peanuts has lots of beer on tap for cheap. My boyfriend and his friends would always get a couple pitchers after exams or finals.... or just before class when they felt like it..... Pros- cheap good, convenient location to SJSU, beer on tap Cons- food was under seasoned and just okay :/ The lady who took my order wasn't very pleasant, I asked if I could get my bacon extra crispy, she nodded yes, but it came out just like everyone else's (floppy). Peanuts is a SJSU staple. Every college campus needs a place of its own that their students go to for cheap food and good company, and this place is definitely it. It may be a little dated, but it's been around so long that it gives the area some character. The past 5 years, I've found myself coming here to eat with friends, to grab food to-go, and to enjoy (or rather, watch my friends enjoy) happy hour. Even after I graduate, I'm sure I'll be back very often for old times' sake. The place doesn't serve gourmet food or anything, but they do give you large portions for delicious breakfasts at a cheap price. What's not to like? I'm glad SJSU has a place like this close by because it's a nice change from the neighboring fast food restaurants. My personal favorites are the Western Omelette and the Eggs and Hot Links. The owner and his wife are also very nice and friendly, so it definitely makes it worth it for me to support this small, local business. On a side note, it's rather entertaining when people play songs on the juke box. There's nothing like listening to some Flo Rida over breakfast. read more
