I love this charming gem of a restaurant. Gilroy has 2 popular sushi restaurants, so on a Friday night we decided to give this sushi restaurant a chance. Boy are we glad the service time was average but the man that makes the sushi rolls are made by the older Japanese man that makes the sushi at Nob Hill. Food was filling, however, the rolls were'nt rolled tight enough and we werent a fan of the ginger that was nesting itself in a self-serve container sitting in the sun. The price made up for the cons. I too am thankful that Gilroy now has more than 1 option for sushi, and it is on the east side of town! Went here on a Thursday night and it had about 75 percent of the tables occupied not bad for middle of the week. Very nice decor, alot of cherry wood, great wall hangings. I came to the restaurant with 2 children about 7pm. We were seated at the sushi bar. They have sushi boats that weren't in operation but we had a great view of the sushi chef in action. We ordered edamame, miso soup, rice, tempura rolls, california rolls, philadelphia rolls and the fantastic roll. All of these came in large portions, very fresh, and plated nicely. The Fantastic roll was well named, loaded with delicious salmon. Didnt get too adventurous since the kids were there but they liked everything that was served to us. We look forward to coming back very soon. I agree with the previous Yelper give them a few weeks to get everything running smoothly and this will be the best sushi in Gilroy! read more

In a former life... I believe I was Japanese... It's kind of because the way my body craves sushi and Udon... just kidding... So as a Japanese connoisseur of fine foods... I have my favorite places that I love to go... And quite frankly... They are all over Santa-Clara and Santa-Clara County... I have been to different sushi places in San Francisco, Las Vegas, LA, lots of different places... So I feel like I'm qualified to rate this sushi restaurant... The lady that is the waitress there is so sweet... And the sushi chef is so nice... I wish I could give them a very good rating just because of who they are... but honestly, and I do have to be honest... The sushi is only fair... There's often a great debate about true Japanese sushi and "Korean sushi"... And if I were to classify this restaurant as one or the other it would be the latter... As far as price goes I think the quantity for the amount of money you pay is on the higher end... As far as ambience goes this restaurant is small and relatively clean... I wish I could give them a better rating just because I like the owners... But like I said I have to be honest... I don't go there for sushi anymore... BEST SUSHI PLACE IN GILROY! I'm a hard to please type of customer & I love food. My boyfriend & I are foodies. We travel all over the place trying out foods. We love to cook & know good food. Especially Sushis & Sashimi. We're both Asian + Islanders who grew up eating raw fish and know when it's fresh and prepped right. Pearl Sushi was the freshest! We both loved everything we had! Even the Salad was fresh! And we went in a few minutes before closing time and the Twin Sisters still let us in to eat pass their closing time. Great hospitality and just overall great Sushi! This will definitely be my sushi place from now on and will let all my friends know they should try the place out if they haven't already :) read more

My boyfriend and I happened to be in town for the day. We were craving for sushi, so we decided to utilize Yelp to assist us in finding the best sushi restaurant in the area. We discovered Pearl Sushi Lover and saw that there were a lot of good reviews on Yelp along with plenty of pictures of the food served there. Upon entering, the restaurant was so poorly lit, I questioned if they were open yet. There were no customers inside. Two older women stood up from realizing we had walked in and seemed a little surprised. After several seconds of exchanging glances with one another, they greeted us and signaled for us to take a seat at a booth. We were handed menus as our drink orders were taken. Once our drinks were dropped off, she asked if we needed more time. We kindly replied that a few more minutes would be nice. She then recommended the Santa Cruz roll and House Special. She also stated ordering two rolls would be "good enough," because it was only lunch time. Mind you, we came from out of town and had not had breakfast and was very hungry. My boyfriend and I were a little taken back from her "suggestion." We agreed and decided to wait to see how we felt after the two rolls... The same older lady that took our order walked around to the other side of the sushi bar and made our rolls. When the rolls were brought out to us, they were exactly identical with the exception of one having imitation crab meat on the inside and the other had spicy tuna. The fish was warm. The rolls were drenched in a very thick "unagi" sauce. As hungry as we were, it was not satisfying, to say the least, and difficult to finish. The entire time we were eating, the lady who made the rolls was standing by the sushi bar and looking at us eat. I assume she wanted to see our reactions, but I found it creepy. When our tab was dropped off, she stood right by my side and waited until I signed it. It was so weird and uncomfortable. I've never been to a restaurant where anyone has aggressively suggested the amount of items that I should be ordering due to the time of the day! That's ridiculous. I would assume a business would want customers to order more in order to earn more revenue?! Apparently not this restaurant. I will NOT return here. I seriously do not know how this place even has 3 stars! Perhaps due to the lack of good sushi restaurants here, but one thing's for sure, it cannot compare to sushi restaurants in Fresno. read more

The joint is run by these 2 really cute twins & the service was perfect for me but the rolls were not what I was hoping for. 2 of the 3 we ordered was good but when it comes to paying $50 for 2 peeps at a sushi rest in Gilroy, damn it I want everything to be perfect. O! and the spicy tuna roll was NOT spicy. Major bummer!!! I prob will come back but only for the simpler rolls but not for the specialty rolls. Going off of only one experience, I thought the sushi here was just okay. I also found the service a little odd since they bring that huge Specials board right to the side of your table when you're ordering (pretty much blocked us into our booth). One of the twins was our server while the other was in the kitchen and I wouldn't say that the server was rude exactly or that service was bad.. no, in fact she was very nice... it was just kind of weird haha. They did have a creative looking menu so I may go back to try one more time and have something different and see if the sushi and the service varies but I don't have high hopes. I also should say that they really need to work on their sign (which looks like it just says SUSHI) and/or look! They have a decent location right by a busy street (surrounding businesses are another story) but it gives off a sketchy vibe and I didn't try the place for-ever because I was half avoiding it. read more

As an avid goer and lover of Ninja Sushi,I must unfortunately say that Pearl Sushi is.....better. Usually when I get a roll and it involves tempura it ends up being soft and soggy half way through the meal. But at pearl it stays so crisp. They have tons of rolls to choose from. It takesThree menu pages and two whiteboards on the wall to show off all of their rolls. I've tried about six different rolls now with my girlfriend on different trips,and every roll has something different about it. And it's ran by the two most adorable sisters. Both twins. This is our favorite sushi place in Morgan Hill/Gilroy because they have a good variety of rolls... and ones that aren't all tempura-based or start off as a California roll. The fish tastes fresh, and they have some interesting combinations. The portions are slightly on the smaller side, and like all other sushi places in the area, not cheap. The real downside about this place is the service - it is always very slow. read more

Bummer. Ladies were warm and friendly upon entry; cute/silly names for specials; comprehensive menu with choices for all palettes. After that 4 stars for food, 2 stars for service. food: Excellent green tea and miso soup. Reports from the others: chicken curry donburi avg., teriyaki beef roll good, CA roll good, "the freak" good, ikura sushi bad due to some hardened eggs. An hour later, I was still waiting for my food, so can't comment on the nigiri sushi nor the "porcupine," as we had to leave at that point. Tea no longer hot, nor ever refilled. service: Told to sit at table with 2 place settings for the 4 of us, then no one ever brought more until we asked for it when some food came. Was given stack of dishes, napkins, and chopsticks to pass out ourselves. Only 3 menus (minor gripe). Water not refilled. Food came so slow and in bits, that we were finally out of time, and I left hungry. Had been driving by this place for a couple years, finally got a chance to go. Would go back if I heard there were service improvements, but it's off the list for a return visit. read more

I've had sushi at plenty of restaurants between Gilroy and S.F., some where the prices were high and the fish could be hit or miss. FRESH FRESH FRESH. I cannot say enough good things about this place. It is ran by two sisters that stay true to real sushi. I am so impressed with the freshness, definitely the highest quality in Gilroy. I work down here and come here at least 4 times a week for lunch. It may not look like much from the outside, with a horrible location that gives this place no visibility, but rest assured this place is the BEST in all of Gilroy. The service is also fantastic. The two sisters that run the place are always very happy to see me and have a positive upbeat vibe. If you are ever in Gilroy looking for sushi, this is your place!! I've been a few times because my friends recommended this place to me, it doesn't have the best sushi, but it still has decent sushi. The presentation of the rolls was magnificent, however the quality of it was alright. It's not too pricey, I personally think that the price is just right for a place like this. It's small restaurant, but very clean. It had a sushi bar and various Japanese decoration, it felt very peaceful in there. The workers in the restaurant are nice as well, a little slow on the service so don't come here if you're an impatient person. Food: Pearl has come a long way. It's not Nobu, but it's not Safeway either. Very fresh, tasty, and well presented. Santa Cruz Roll is my favorite. On a scale of 1 - 10, its an 8+. Service: The new chef, is GREAT. He is fast and artistic. Every item is prepared fresh to order with consistency and precision. It is true that the rolls are not tight, however, they are not supposed to be. Proper rolls have loose insides with a well sealed wrapper such that if you pick it up correctly, it will not fall apart. Loose rolls melt in your mouth with beautiful texture and a spectrum of flavor. Tight rolls are like chewy nuggets of goo where all the flavor is hidden by starchy rice. Loose is better. In the past Pearl had a reputation for being slow. Slow to seat, slow to order, slow to deliver. But the owners are now in a position where they don't have to try to do it all themselves and have hired more staff to better serve the customers. Seating is quick, ordering is effcient, and time to delivery is fast too. Remember everything is made to order and sushi is just as much art as it is food. Decor: The decor is clean, tasteful, a bit trendy. It feels like a fine restraunt rather than a food service pad in a strip mall (ala king eggroll). Bottom line: If you like sushi, give this place a shot. Prices are resonable. Service is good. Food quality is very good. It's a new shop and they are still growing. Let's support them and make sushi in south Gilroy a success. read more

my little brother wanted some sushi and he noticed that there was a "grand open" sign at this place. finally it's opened after so long!! a couple of weeks ago, i went it and asked for a to-go menu just in case. today was our first time ordering. the place is really nice and it does look like they're just starting so only one person running the front desk and the customers (i think i might've seen the manager walking around) and a chef behind the sushi bar. the first thing i noticed on the menu was their prices. WHOOOEEE! so expensive :-O. anyway, we ordered some soft shell crab, seafood udon, shrimp tempura roll, and a titanic roll. Total $39.11 (including tax)! and to tell u the truth, this was NOT worth the money. i would rather drive all the way up to davis or sacramento for their all you can eat sushi buffet!!! the rolls were decent size but they weren't packed tight so once you picked it up, the insides fell out :(. maybe he was rushing? i mean he did have 15 minutes to prepare it. the soft shell crab was ok but it was more like the hawaiian chicken katsu; and they only gave us 4 sliced pieces. inside my titanic roll was a chunky salmon and some lettuce. WTH?! we asked to order a small-sized udon (charged as lunch price of $12.95) instead of their regular $15.95 size. overall, the food was not spectacular and it wasn't worth buying. read more

My son and I just decided to try this place out because we were starving! The service is FANTASTIC! However, it doesn't make up for the food! We both ordered the chicken teriyaki with California Rolls and a side of veggie tempura. The tempura was absolutely awful! I've never tasted anything like it. Then the chicken came. It smelled a little odd, but I unfortunately tried it anyway. The first bite was strange, it was completely cold in the middle. I checked it and it was completely cooked though. I thought it was strange because it was hot on the outside but cold on the inside and cooked? So I complained and the sweet waitress immediately said, "don't eat it, I make new one." She literally came out less than 5 minutes later with a side of teriyaki chicken on a piping hot plate . I tried it again and the same thing. I've been here 4 or 5 times so far. It was never packed, but always had a few tables filled. It does take a few minutes to get seated some times, but the owners are very sweet. My boyfriend and I always get the Santa Cruz Rolls and a couple other rolls as well. He loves the sauce that they use for the sushi. The owners walk around quite often and make sure that everyone has what they need. Sushi rolls are made fairly quickly. I dont think we've ever had a roll that wasnt yummy. The last time we went, our sushi had caviar on top. They used CAVIAR and not just plain fish roe. I have to admit, i'm a bit impressed. Too bad one of the owners told us that she wouldn't be buying anymore. Many Gilroyians (?) were a little off-put by the idea that there were black fish eggs topped on their sushi. Whatever. My girlfriend and I were craving poke and decided to give this place a try, considering the amount of good reviews. We fill out our orders on the menu and gave it to the old lady and she said "can you wait?" and I replied, "no problem". I assume that it's because there were 3 orders ahead of us and it's going to take a while so I had no problem and was patient. There was no where to sit to wait besides the front so we sat and waited for our order there. We peeked every 10 minutes to see if they are making food and they are. About 30 minutes gone by and this time we decided to sit at a table in front of the chefs and that is when one of the other ladies asked "do you guys need any help?" And I replied, "oh no, we are just waiting for our order", she then had this confused look on her Face and went to the back to talk to the older lady in which I gave our menu orders to, the older lady walks to us and said, "oh we thought you guys left and we just canceled your order", ok uhmmm really, so we just waited for nothing and this got me mad and they apologized and had us write down our order again, so they can make our poke bowls immediately. It probably took about another 20 minutes for them to make our bowl in which they charge my girlfriend for a monster size without letting her know and she checked for a regular size bowl with 3 scoops. They claim they gave her more scoops and larger portions. At this point I just want my food and I just paid for 2 monster bowls and went on my home. We went back and our bowl is filled up with 3 quarters of mooshy rice, the crab was dry and didn't look fresh, there was barely any sauce so the bowl tasted flavorless, my girlfriends "monster" bowl didn't even look like she got an additional 2 scoops of protein. We agreed that this was an unpleasant poke bowl and couldn't even finish half of it. I'm not sure about their sushi because we didn't order it but their poke bowls was not good. I love their sushi. They always make it fresh and tasteful. Lion king roll is one of their specials that I love and always order. The only thing is that there's only two people working so if it gets busy, you're going to have to wait a while for your food and service.
