I was at this lovely restaurant with a group of others. As I got here a bit early, I sat down and ordered one of my favorite drinks, a negroni. After speaking with the friendly bartender noting what I tend to like and drink, he recommended the Chef's Negroni which had Vida Mezcal, Gran Classico, and Carpano Antica (vermouth) for $17. The drink which was on the bitter end (which is my definite preference) had a smokey finish to it and I can see why the bartender likes using mezcal. Very tasty and I would order again. Anyway, the rest arrived and we sat near the back. The only complaint I can make is that since we were so far back, it was very warm especially with all the candles as well as the big hearth behind us. I would almost recommend to dress lightly for this reason. The group I'm in tends to prefer separate checks (which tends to be an issue) and the very friendly waitress said pretty quickly that this was fine and there were zero issues here. For having six people, I have never had a wait staff from a non-fancy or non-Michelin spot be this okay with separate checks. Top notch in general to the waitstaff. They waited an appropriate amount of time to clear plates, refilled the waters whenever needed, and gave good recommendations to the other people. Anyway, as another individual and I were interested in a bunch of dishes, we decided to split an appetizer and a main dish as they were both the same price anyway and order separate desserts which worked perfectly. Our first appetizer was a special which was roasted beef tongue with a horseradish cream which was $19. The beef tongue was cooked perfectly with a wonderful texture being both soft and firm and this was one of the better ones in recent memory with the only ones better being likely from some Japanese spots. The horseradish cream was luckily subtle and it worked quite well. Less successful for the same price was the Di Palo's Burrata Spezzata with pesto Genovese and cherry tomato. Perfectly fine amount of cheese but I would have preferred more of the pesto. I also think an acidic element or something slightly sweet (perhaps balsamic glaze) or something similar would work well as I found it a bit one note. I believe someone else got a salad which I remember being quite large. Our two main dishes which were both $26 arrived at similar times both bubbling. My preference of the two was the Rosette with short rib, hen of the woods (mushroom,) and chestnut. The (al dente) pasta reminded me heavily of a lasagna and they were wrapped around (which apparently is why it's called Rosette.) It had something similar to a brown butter on the bottom and as per the description, it was quite rich and very delicious being my favorite dish of the night. The short rib had a soft texture with a meaty taste and the mushrooms added more richness. The chestnut again added even more extra texture and overall I would recommend it heavily. Our other choice was the popular Rotisserie Lamb Ragu with gnocchi alla Romana. Unlike the other dish, I would say that there wasn't enough of the lamb so it was mostly gnocchi with a cheese and tomato sauce. The gnocchi was an interesting take as from the top, it looked more like a lasagna. It was tasty but I wasn't sure if I was worth it for the price. Other people had the smoked linguine (which they liked but complained about the small portion,) and I believe the last person because they have gluten allergies had a whole fish from the specials menu which they loved. My dessert were the Fire Roasted Pears with ice cream and I think it was something around $12. I believe the ice cream on top was fior di latte/fresh cream ice cream and it was very tasty. It was chopped into small pieces likely consisting of one pear. The fire added a nice texture but I would say that this was a bit bland. Perhaps something else should have been added such as either nuts or some other type of sweet fruit and I might recommend it if you want something simple. The majority of people had the flour-less chocolate cake and I tried it and it was tasty. I remember it having the same type of ice cream also. I believe my rating for this restaurant might be a little bit elevated because of a couple of very specific factors. The first reason was the wonderful waitstaff which even compared to most other restaurants was exemplary. The second was that we happened to order two outstanding dishes in which case one of them was a special and the other one doesn't appear to have been reviewed by almost anyone (rosette) while the two more famous dishes (outside of the fact that many people get the suckling pig here) were the ones that we preferred less. I personally liked this place a lot but perhaps we got lucky. read more

They were accommodating and we sat outside under a beautiful tree that had incredible yellow flowers falling from it like we were in a movie. Epic time. read more

Entrees were rosette pasta, carbonara (served from a jar after shaking), smoked linguine vongole, and yes - a strip steak ($58). The latter was deemed "superb" as although a fatty cut it worked well on the grill. No desserts. Throw in an $85 red wine and tip and damages for 4 were $475. A bit pricey? My friends and I were seated immediately even though we were early for our reservation. I really appreciated that because some restaurants can be strict with that. The place is beautiful, dimly lit, great decor and half open kitchen where you can sorta see the chefs running around. We had high expectations for this place because my friend knew the chef's used to work at another restaurant that he really liked. They have a basic cocktails menu but you can also request for anything that you want. They also offer several types of liquor, which was nice because the guys were whiskey snobs. Our server was extremely attentive and made sure our glasses were filled at all times. The food also came out very quickly, as the restaurant wasn't too filled. We ordered a few items to share - 1. Baby octopus - chewy, which I liked but lacked in flavor 2. Rigatoni alla Vodka - which was our fave that we had to put in a second order! 3. Suckling pig - heard this was a popular item, but we weren't a fan, the pig was hard to chew and it was lacking flavor as well 4. Strip steak - it was ok, the steak was cooked well, but wouldn't order again For the price, we honestly thought the portions would be bigger. I came here for dinner with my friend around 5:30pm on a Saturday. This place is dark and dim. They have candles keeping the restaurant bright. We ordered octopus as an appetizer. They also served us some wood roasted oysters for having us wait for a long time. There was a miscommunication among the staff and we were left hanging. However, at least 4 staff members came up to us throughout the night and apologized for the wait. I was very pleased with the way they handled the situation. The octopus, wood roasted oysters and rigatoni alla vodka were delicious. I wasn't a big fan of the suckling pig. This restaurant is clean, intimate and a vibe. Let me start with they have an amazing wine selection no matter what stage you're in with drinking wine. Ambiance is very rustic and romantic. We were hoping for tasty items we experienced 10 years ago on our first date but sadly disappointed. The waiter was very attentive, although bus boy was a little confused or nervous he was making attempts to fill water glasses that were clearly full. The octopus lacked that chili spice we love and was swimming in breadcrumbs. The Caesar salad was amazing, fresh, crisp radicchio, kale, and in house croutons. The disaster came with suckling pig which was swimming in oil and lacked flavor and the smoked linguini also swimming in oil that we didn't eat much and went home much earlier than expected. We had the calamari, bucatini, rosette, and the suckling pig. Lovedddd the Rosette. It's like a modern take on lasagna where they basically serve it pinroll style and with lamb inside. Literal goodness. The calamari was underwhelming for me. Great flavor but hate that it wasn't fried (it was a texture thing for me). The bucatini was good and the presentation was super nice. However I saw a dish of the vodka rigatoni going out and wish I had ordered that. The suckling pig in my opinion was overrated. It was good amount packed in but it basically $54 pulled pork. This is just one of those restaurants thats all about fluff and no substance. Service and wine were great but the food was just lacking and small portions. We ordered a pizza appetizer it was okay but unexpectedly spicy and completely burnt. I like brick oven burnt spots but the entire bottom was burnt. We ordered the pig and rosette pasta with short rib. It was pasta with added corn but just a few kernels and it was odd. There was maybe 3-4 teaspoons of meat in each dish. Tiny dishes. We definitely had room for dessert. Bill was 240 with tip. The place is beautiful but I'd go just for drinks frankly. Or eat before you go here lol. Also the place was empty (we were early about 6pm) and we were the 2nd table there then the 3rd table they put a few inches from us it was so weird. How did I just find out about this place?! My usual Italian go to is Lupa, and sometimes go upscale to Carbone, but this has become my new favorite. Peasant has been around for over 20 years, and it's easy to see why. The decor is rustic and romantic; you are surrounded by beautiful exposed brick walls illuminated by candlelight as soon as you walk in. They have a beautiful open kitchen which provides a view of their brick ovens, as well as age-old pots and pans that look like they came from an Italian grandmother's kitchen. It was our first time here since Marc Forgione took over in late 2019. The service, ranging from the hostess to the waitstaff to the busboy, was fantastic. In addition to a decent wine and beer list, they also have a small cocktail menu. They carry numerous Italian wines I'd never heard of. I went with the Pinot Bianco, which was dry and fruit-forward. I also had their Italian Mule cocktail, which was good, but the wine definitely paired better with the food and ambiance. After ordering our drinks, we were brought a basket of bread with whipped ricotta cheese and olive oil; the perfect start of a delicious meal. For our app, we decided on the sardines, which was fire-grilled to perfection! It was garlicky and lemony and so delicious. Pro-tip: save some bread to sop up the sauce. I had the scallop entree, which was so buttery and flavorful. I wish we had enough room for dessert as well, but were stuffed (and super satisfied) after our entrees and drinks. Our meal of 2 glasses of wine, 3 cocktails, 1 appetizer, 2 entrees, a coffee, +tax/tip worked out to $205. Worth every penny. read more

I was super excited to try out Peasant, another Marc Forgione establishment (I love his restaurant in Tribeca). However, I would say that I was disappointed. The food was just ok. The best dishes were the bruschetta, which was topped with a smoked ricotta, and the Smoked Linguine. The other items we got, which were the sunfed shrimp, octopus and wood fire oysters were very forgettable. The Rosette was not very good. It was very gummy. The worst part of the night was when the lady who removed our dishes chose to remove them over my head. She ended up spilling shrimp juice on my hair and my face. I was also wearing a white sweater and it was a miracle she did not spill anything on my sweater! This has never happened to me at a restaurant before. She was apologetic after I had to tell her 3x about what had happened but it was still a mistake that was hard to overlook. read more

Peasant was an excellent visit! We went as a group of seven and the staff were very flexible when we added a few more attendees last minute. The ambiance of this restaurant is very romantic so I can see this being a great date night spot. We tried the buratta, several of the pasta dishes and a few desserts. So delicious! We got oxtail, octopus, oyster, clams, rotisserie lamb ragu, and hazelnut flourless chocolate cake. Everything tastes great and the server was very nice! I personally like the lamb ragu and oxtail the most! The octopus dish is baby octopus stuffed with hot chili, so for anyone who doesn't want anything spicy you should avoid it! We really wanted to try the suckling pig, but unfortunately they don't have it ready that day. Would suggest to check ahead of time if anyone wants to try that. I love this place. Downstairs it feels like an old European wine cellar. You will be eating in the catacombs with the help of a sommelier to walk you through the wine list. Wow wow wow. This place is Iron Chef Marc Forgione's second restaurant which I believe he bought shortly before the pandemic started, and boy was this iron chef quality. Think of all of your favorite foods. Pasta? Pizza? Caesar salad? Steak? A+ cocktails? This place has all of the above and completely knocks it out of the park. The quality was amazing and the prices were very fair for the quality and portion size. Here's what I recommend: the bucatini carbonara for pasta. the pizza, ask for the meatball special if they have it. The steak and Caesar salad are both very good too, but def recommend the first too. The mezcal old fashioned was a unique twist on the drink. Service was extremely attentive. My experience was outdoor dining but I already know I'm going back because the interior looked gorgeous. I love this restaurant!! I ordered the rigatoni alla vodka and it was great- I think they added toasted breadcrumbs, or some ingredient, to add a small crunch- so good! I also got the fried calamari which isn't your basic order- they did it in a different way (see pic) which was super good. My only complaint is a specific pasta order (I forget which one, but I think it was some sort of ravioli) because the portion size was extremely small. The waiter did warn us before we ordered it, but we didn't expect it to be so tiny! The waiter was also great. And, the ambiance inside is very nice. I will definitely be going back soon! read more

We were headed to Manhattan a few weeks ago and have been wanting to try Peasant. We were lucky and found a parking spot right outside. We were greeted and seated right away. It's really beautiful inside. However, so dark that you can barely see the menu or food. Our server told us everything was for sharing. We ordered the burrata and octopus to start and then a pasta carbonara to share. Firstly, the drinks were delicious. The starters were so small. The burrata was nice, but half the ball was severed. So we shared. The octopus was nice, but again a small portion. The pasta, which was also to share was barely a normal one person serving. But, again, we shared. read more

This is the pinnacle of all Italian food. I have never been so satisfied with a restaurant. First I had the Wood Roasted Oysters and this is not your average seafood dish. The flavors are complex on an unimaginable scale for everything, but this one in particular was so diverse and amazing. It was sweet at first but switched to savory quick while still maintaining a balanced flavor between spices. The lamb ribs were a very simple yet delicious flavor but a lot of the ribs were just fat so it certainly was not the star of the show. The spicy Octopus was one of the best foods I have ever eaten it was so spicy and delicate but still maintaining a firm tentacle to bite into. I have a loss of words for the Agnolotti. I'm speechless over this. It very well might have been the greatest dish I have ever eaten in my life. The smoked Linguine was very buttery and garlicy there was a lot of lemon on it yet still it didn't overpower the dish it was on the line of too much and yet it was still Delicious. I've read a lot of bad things about the Suckling Pig. That it was dry and hard to chew, both of these were wrong it was a great dish but it was just pork. There were no seasonings so it was a little bland, but they made up for it with the crispy delicious skin. Sometimes you would get a charred piece and when it's charred, it's charred, they do not cook it lightly. Dessert wise they did pretty good but nowhere near as good as the main meal. The apple crisp was like a mini apple pie with salted caramel ice cream on it, the apples are cooked to perfection and it's just the right amount of food after a great meal. Affogato was vanilla gelato with a very light espresso. They compliment each other so well yet it is still so simple. Everybody there was so nice. Some of the nicest staff you can find in New York. It has such an old and original feel to it. The vibe says it's a little tiny restaurant on the corner but the food says it's a high end restaurant. Overall it was an unforgettable experience and I am definitely going back in the future. read more

3.5 stars. Came here with a large group for a friend's birthday and overall had a very nice time, but a few things docked it down for me. We had an 8:30 reservation and with a group of 11, it's pretty hard to get everyone to show up on time. They needed at least a majority of the people there to seat us, which was kind of annoying, but understandable. People ordered a variety of drinks - my friend and I decided to get a bottle of wine for the two of us. We ordered a bunch of appetizers for the table, all of which were delicious: Burrata, margarita pizza, a pizza with prosciutto and arugula, octopus, and cauliflower with truffle. Now I know truffles are more expensive, but I do feel like the server should've warned us it would be an extra $30 for the truffles, we were surprised to see that it was so much for such a small dish. Minus one from me. My friend and I shared the bistecca, which was a very large portion and definitely shareable. The potatoes were good, but in some sort of creamy sauce that I would've preferred to have been dry instead. The filet side of the T bone was much better. For dessert we ordered a chocolate cake and the server put a candle in it for us, but they didn't offer it to us for free or anything. At one point the server asked my friend if she wanted another glass of wine and she said she was fine. He ended up bringing it for her anyway saying that a glass of wine should never be empty but then when looking at the bill I was pretty sure the wine was on there! With so many people and everyone getting different things it's impossible to confirm the bill was correct. Overall, the food was pretty good and the price was decent, but I just don't think this place deserves 4 stars. read more

Ambiance was so great, menu was exciting, wine list was stupid good and food was delicious. My issue and it's the only thing that kept it from being a perfect dining experience was the spacing of the courses. We ordered 3 courses; first one had 2 dishes, second course was one dish and third was two dishes. We felt super rushed to finish each course so they could drop the next one, zero space in between. With dishes this rich, you shouldnt be rushed but we definitely were. some of these dishes take days to prepare and we were given very little time to enjoy it. 3 courses, 5 dishes were served in less than an hour of being sat at our table. That is just not cool. We will definitely come back and I will continue to recommend this amazing restaurant but I would suggest talking to your server about slowing up the pace.
