Genuine. No cookies, no cakes, just excellent breads. When I lived around the corner in the late '80's & early '90's I stopped there every day on my way to work. They were such a part of my daily routine that I contracted with them to bake all the bread for my wedding. I stopped back in today and was thrilled that the place looks the same, the products are just as good as they were 20 years ago, and the staff just as friendly. Yes, it has changed owners, but the new ones have kept the winning formula. You'll not find a better bakery in Jersey City. read more

I come here for two items because they do them the best! Stuffed breads and focaccia! The stuffed breads are made with the right amounts of meats and cheese and the focaccia is darn tasty. Sometimes when I go, someone buys up all their breads the moment they open in the morning, leaving me out in the cold. That's how good it is. read more

We were staying at an Airbnb around the corner and came here for sandwiches. We ordered the eggplant parmesan and a prosciutto and mozzarella. Both were delicious and I would definitely come back. They bake their own bread and it shows. Cookies were so so with some varieties better tasting than others. read more

I work next door and I have fits where I HAVE TO GET my Pecoraro's stuffed bread. Then after 2 weeks of having bread everyday, I have to cut myself off (till the cravings start again). My faves here: Spinach stuffed Olive stuffed Pepperoni stuffed "everything" stuffed Christmas cookies! And Donna & Pete are the regular counter folks here... both are sweethearts! Many old time Village folks will tell you about how they grew up eating Pecoraro's bread. It been here 50 years? Something like that... Love that! read more

The building housing Pecoraro has been a bakery for over 100 years. Once they showed me the huge brick oven they have in the back, which they say has been there over 80 years. So clearly they're doing something right. The standard bread is just incredible, and they also make olive bread, sausage bread, and if you call ahead they'll make you a pizza. The people working there are friendly and when you buy bread here you feel like you're part of a tradition, not just a nameless consumer. read more

This place is legendary. Best bread in the world. Very nice owners and staff. You gotta come early for a full selection. If you come late you can get discounts on the leftovers. Excellent bread but you might not think so just based on the appearance of the place. Don't be fooled, it is delicious. Their basic bread is soft inside, crusty on the outside. This is one of those totally off the beaten path type places that is totally unique to Downtown JC. Need something to take to a party that you know no one else will bring? Bring some cash and pick up a loaf of pepperoni bread. Seriously, you'll be the hit of the party. We fell in love with their bread at a restaurant in Closter, NJ, and finally asked the owner where they source their bread from. So we made a pilgrimage to Jersey City and stocked up on bread for the freezer (it freezes and reheats beautifully) and also got a prosciutto and fresh mozzarella sandwich while there. The sandwich was heavenly, made to my exact specs, and generously stuffed with good-quality deli. The prices are crazy reasonable. I've been back since for the sandwich and more bread. Our favorite bread is the round white boule (?) both regular and huge sizes. My only quibble was the braided whole wheat bread with sesame, which was freshly made but when we got it home, discovered that it was moldy. Guessing it was bagged while still hot, plus it was the dead of summer and the place isn't air conditioned. Still, the bakers need to be aware of this and I hope they read their reviews. My advice: go for the bread and the sandwiches, but inspect your loaves before leaving the shop. Hands down, it's the best bread in the entire area and worth a trip. read more

Nice people who run the place - real Mom and Pop. I really wanted to like this place, as we need places like this to make it a real neighborhood. But honestly coming from Brooklyn this place would not get a second thought. Bread is decent at best. Great for Jersey City standards I guess. read more

Just got back from here. They mostly only have breads, so for those looking to come to this bakery for croissants and pastries, they dont have them. I got a big whole wheat loaf (the last one) which they sliced for me, as well as a stuffed spinach roll (which at $4 is a steal) and a blueberry muffin that was mediocre. Everything was $9 read more

Stopped here on a whim and thought at first sight that it might be a front shop. Literally, there were two Italian guys and a few boxes of breads. The guys ended up being hilarious, striking up a fun conversation with my friend and I. We split a loaf of sausage bread for breakfast and it was some of the most amazing bread I have EVER had!! The sausage was the texture of meatballs and so delicious. They also had breads with pepperoni, spinach, and olives. Amazing. read more

I refuse to eat bread from anywhere else - meaning where else in Jersey City can you get fresh delicious authentic bread with crunchy crust that smells, tastes and looks like bread supposed to? And recently they have been trying to add variety - now they have croissants, muffins, danishes. And you can't beat their prices - 3 dollars for a medium panella. read more

Stopped by well after they were closed on a Sunday afternoon based on another review we saw on this site and the owners were sitting inside having a beer and relaxing.... They invited us in and offered us some of the italian bread I've ever had by far and the prices are ridiculously cheap. I'd passed by this place before without paying it any mind. On the strength of the reviews, I made a point of going back and was not disappointed. The fellow at the counter quickly sussed out that I was not only new to the bakery, but new to the area. What followed was a friendly guided tour of everything on offer, an overview of the store's hours, and advice on the best times to get particular items. I appreciated that--even more so when I brought loaves of olive and wheat bread home to my wife, who couldn't stop raving about them. The sheer weight of the loaves in the bag as I carried them home was impressive. If you want air-filled sponges, go elsewhere. I look forward to trying the sausage and pepperoni breads. Though I've been to Pecoraro just once, I completely agree with Susan S.: I feel like part of a tradition--and nothing could be more welcoming to a newcomer. read more

So I've been meaning to try this place for over 2 years. But whenever I thought of this place, they were always closed. I was determined to have my breads today, even though it was raining. I even called ahead to make sure they were open. But guess what? When I arrived, there was a little sign saying they will be back at 11:50. I arrived at 11:35. I waited for 15 minutes in the rain until the worker came back. Talk about my determination! Alas, my wait was not in vain. I got the sausage bread and the spinach bread. The worker told me they put mozzarella in all their breads so that was something new I learned. He also said that they are now open on Mondays! The breads are huge. I had them as 2 meals. When I got home, I cut a third of each and heated up in the microwave. It was heaven! The sausage one definitely won out versus the spinach. One thing I took a star away for is that there could be more stuffing in it. read more
