Always wanted to try a Peet's since they aren't as accessible like Starbucks and Coffee Bean on every corner, and this location seemed to have very good reviews. Sorry the experience service-wise here was less than stellar. This was due to the guy working the register who was really tall with a ponytail, an accent and an attitude. However, he did seem to favor the gentleman in front of me, so perhaps there was nothing I could have done differently. I would like to point out the lady making my drink was very nice though. If only I was not so lazy about committing keystrokes to screen to write these reviews, this Peet's would have gotten a much better review. I am not a coffee freak because my full-tilt addiction to the tealeaf keeps me occupied full time. The only time I can be found drinking coffee, and not because of any aversion or dislike, mind you, is at a diner-type atmosphere or when I find myself, along with others, at a coffee establishment. I have been in this Peet's a few times in the past, always when I was catching a film at the Aero Theatre across the street. Maybe it was cold, and I needed a little warm-up, or just to fill up the belly for the next two hours. This one time, at Peet's...it was a pretty Sunday afternoon in autumn, and after getting a cup of coffee, adding a small dose of the natural sugar and half-and-half (yum), I had a really nice outing sitting for a few minutes on the metal garden furniture they have along 14th Street. If only I had written about it then. I stopped in here earlier tonight before seeing Seven Samurai at the Aero. There were about 7 people there --- a couple of them were by station with all the fixings. A coupe others were just "around," two were ordering at the counter, and a woman was behind them. I got in behind her. After about a half-minute wait, I hear someone saying they are closed. As I turned about, I realized this was directed a young couple as they were crossing the store to get in behind me. Then the employee told the couple that they had already made their cut-off, and that the woman ahead of me was last in line. In no time did he ever tell me that Peet's was frigging closing. Thus, I was left flapping in the wind here. This sounds harsh and I probably seem like a complete jerk if this is the motivating factor for the shitty rating, but I am actually a very accepting person when it comes to this type of stuff. But for whatever reason, this particular situation really pissed me off. If this was a restaurant, and I was about to order dinner, I can understand about having to have the staff cook the food and wait on me at a time when they are anticipating closing up shop and heading home. But a friggin cup of coffee??? As the great Michael McDonald sang --- "...things will never be the same, again." Since there are two OTHER coffee shops on that very same block (a Coffee Bean and a Starbucks) and since I have absolutely no allegiance to one over the other, this will be it for this Peet's. F 'em. So I went across the street to the Coffee bean, which is another story, entirely... Conclusion --- two stars, just because I am a sucker for the good memories. read more

This review is long overdue. When I went to visit Santa Monica, I stopped in to visit this Peet's, and let's just say all the reviews about the staff being rude is very true. I feel like everyone at this location is so stuck up. Jessica, I think she's the one of the managers, needs to be fired. I really wanted something warm and soothing for my throat because I was sick, and I really didn't know what to order. I guess I was asking too many questions, but if you're in the coffee business, you should be patient, not trying to rush customers. I enjoyed sitting outside in the sun, under the 82 degree weather. Delicious for the middle of winter where most are currently experiencing some below zero record-breaking colds! I would give this place a 5 star but after today's experience, definitely down to a 3. I usually have SUCH great customer service, but today the energy in there was horrible and so was the customer service. I did not get one thank you or have a great day and both the girl that took my order and made my drink was unfriendly and both seemed angry. I always leave feeling refreshed and ready to go but today, I regretted that I went in there and left there feeling completely unsatisfied, ruining the rest of my day. I love love love peets. I do not love this location. I came in and ordered a latter and a mango iced tea and the cashier said they could not make a mango iced tea. WTF. I've ordered this at numerous locations in SoCal and NorCal and this was the first time someone said they couldn't and with no real reason. Went here last week, very high volume store in the morning and afternoons! Lots of cyclists! I've noticed a couple reviews about an employee who got a drink wrong, or didn't give them enough attention that they feel they deserved. Well, I just have to say EFF THAT! :^) Perhaps that person was working their first day on the job. Also, people are entitled to their bad days. Peet's coffee will always be delicious, no matter which location. Parking in the back was perfect, with 90 minutes for free, and the pastry case was well stocked and clean. :^) read more

Sometimes you just need a change up to your drinks you normally order. I like going to Peet's because of the different flavors of coffees and "more custom" feel. I feel that Peet's really just focuses on coffee when others like Starbucks has a 3 page menu of items to choose from. Take my word for it and go for the day's "drip" coffee. I used to live in the San Francisco bay area and did some work with Peet's. They're growing quickly and I hope they don't lose focus on what's important: good, strong, well roasted coffee. Peets has been downsizing for whatever reason closing several stores throughout the country, which is probably for the best because the quality has rapidly deteriorated over the past decade almost to rock bottom Starbucks level. This is the only Peets left in Santa Monica and the quality has improved almost to some of the top tier coffee roasters level. It's still not quite back up to the level when the only two stores were on Berkeley and Emeryville but it's getting there . The people are nice and they really have quality baristas and managers . This Peet's Coffee location on Montana Ave is a great spot to read, study, get work done, or do whatever else suits you! The staff has always been friendly, the internet connection has always been good, and the drinks and pastry selection is great. I recommend the Pumpkin Spice Latte (not a big fan of the Pumpkin Chai though) and the Caramel Latte. For pastries, I think they make a really good Cheese danish (compared to other coffee shops). Their drinks are not as sweet as Starbucks for the most part but their coffee is very strong and gets the job done. Really busy location on Montana. With the flow of people in and out of here, it can get bit messy at the milk/sugar station. It's always crowded inside and out. There are a few places to sit inside, but not much. The outside seating is great, if you can get a spot before all of the local road bikers do. I am now officially a convert of Peet's Coffee (from Starbucks). I've heard a lot of people referring to their coffee definitelt tasting better than Starbucks and now I have tasted it myself and must say that it is absolutely true! I always get their Iced Vanilla Latte. The coffee is strong but it is just-right strong. It still is a bit pricey, but I guess it still is cheaper compared to those mom and pop coffee shops. I am also in love with their Blueberry Muffin and their Whole Wheat Banana Muffin. They really taste great, are soft and moist. They also most often run out fast early in the day. Yes, they are that good. So to those who still do not believe that Peet's is way better, read this and believe! And get your money's worth on coffee and pastries! However on this particular store, the last time I have been here, they forgot to put vanilla syrup on my latte so it ended up tasting really bland. I am the type who does not complain a lot (i choose my battles wisely) so I just let that one incident slide and add some at home (yes i have that syrup at home). I also get annoyed when i say "light ice" and they would still fill half of my cup with ice. Hopefully these will not happen again. read more

Montana vs. Brentwood, what's your favorite Peet's west of the 405? I hear there's a new one in MDR, but the parking is atrocious. Myself I'm partial to the Brentwood employees, Peetniks they call them...and you should be so lucky if you need a McJob, health insurance and you don't have to tell people you work for Starfucks. But Montana is a scene, and your'e going to be there anyway. They sell coffee beans--I recommend Guatemala, drip coffee and espresso, pastry--much better quality than the frozen dethawed ones they sell at Sf*ucks, accessories and a few gourmet items. The Tellicherry peppercorns are the only ones you should be using if you have a pepper grinder, take my word for it. You might try the choc covered dried fruit, or Sharffen, well i can't spell it, but those chocolate bars are the bomb. N.B. to teadrinkers: They also do tea with the attention it deserves. They have a Vanilla Matcha Green Tea Latte that is absolutely divine! It is so soothing and has the right amount of sweetness. I fell in love. And, I love the fact that Peet's have almond milk! After a large cup you will be running at maximum efficiency for a minimum of seventy-two hours, and by maximum efficiency I mean exactly zero hours of sleep. Let's talk about the staff. There's a golden haired Adonis there, I don't know what his name is. Every time I see him I get kind of scared and excited at the same time. I want to turn and run away and hide in some kind of cave, but then I think about that Major Dick. I muster up the courage to talk to him and order my coffee. He mentions that I look great in this new sweater I just picked up from Chico's, I blush and flick my hair back. He casually mentioned that his fifteen minute break was coming up and asked if I was hungry. Long story short, we're engaged to be married on the fifteenth and we're registered at macy's! I love this little place on Montana, there is ample outdoor seating and they are very fast when it comes to drink orders. I work around the corner and grab a cup of coffee here all the time. I'm always in and out within 5 mins. I just wish they had more food options like sandwiches or small salads. The only food you can get there are breakfast scones and muffins but nothing substantial. Overall I will always prefer this place to any starbucks, their coffee is just plain better and staff is always friendly and efficient! read more
