I get the portions are supposed to be small so that you try more things HOWEVER the radiatori vodka we received was extremely disappointing from a portion standpoint. First, the interior renovation is a significant upgrade from the former B&B. Nice work Pelato! After dining at New York's Fresco by Scottofor many years, we decided to try this new Scotto family spot in SC. We know this is a new restaurant in Charleston and believe they deserve some time to get everything perfect. From our recent experience, they missed the mark on the potato croquettes, burrata crostini, pelato rav, and the cloud rice pudding. The best we sampled were the eggplant stuffed bread and shrimp limone. Which only means we need to go back and try the other items on the menu! Not worth the hype and plenty of other italian restaurants that have a much higher customer satisfaction goal than Pelato. High volume restaurant with a rather small menu. They will not substitute anything on the menu. So if you see a pasta and a sauce you would like together? Sorry, they don't care! They serve vanilla gelato and make espresso but they don't have time to mix them for you. So you have to get them separately and mix them at the table. and try not to spill your espresso pouring out coffee cup! I went to Pelato's opening night in Charleston and it did not disappoint! The recommendation is to get 2-3 plates per person, which is honestly perfect. I highly suggest the radiatori vodka, and the meatballs (they are the best I have ever had in my life). Wow! I just called to reserve a party for 9 and was told their policy is min $65/pp, spending at least $585. Do I get a private dining room? I don't think so. I was very put off by this policy as I have never heard of it before. Most likely the bill for a party of 9 would more than cover this amount, but what if it didn't and you have small children? I don't understand the logic behind this, more people, bigger bill, set gratuity. They shouldn't have to require or even state this. I'll spend my money elsewhere, thank you. read more

First, the atmosphere. It was not quite as sophisticated as the exterior would suggest but nice enough. For the positive, everything we ordered was excellent. I am not a fan of small servings because I feel like it more of a game for the restaurant to sell more items versus the diner's experience. Also, there are some easy fixes for Pelato to get a 5 vs. 4 star rating. First, they should offer a basic salad (e.g., a Caesar). Having one salad option which is a much more sophisticated option is a problem for many people. Also, the chicken parm is not service with pasta and there is not an option to add a pasta side. This is an oddity and can be easily cleaned up. I am sure they have heard this feedback from many people - I am disappointed these have not been addressed. Neither will change the character of the menu and are easy fixes to improve the experience. Finally, they offer three scoop gelato - which is great - but there should be an option to order one, two, or three scoops. This is common for almost any restaurant that offers ice cream or gelato. This was place was amazing! We went during a storm and worth it. Still packed. Best flavors! My favorite was the creamy polenta and the new special with sweet sausage and red peppers. Great amount of heat and spice. And the polenta just so home style feeling. The melted mozzarella to start too is a must and surprisingly better than expected.
