I went here for a late lunch after i was forced off the beach by a downpour; my friends and I were looking for something quick, cheap, and simple, and that's what we found. The Pelican has a small, basic lunch menu- wraps, salads, paninis, burgers, etc. After seeing overwhelming menus like Nexxt's, I welcome a smaller selection! I didn't drink, but they seemed to have a decent selection of cocktails (including capirinhas, which you can't always find) as well as a rather large wine list, which I was surprised to see. The food here was surprisingly good for a tourist trap; I had a Greek salad wrap with chicken that came warm with a great cucumber dill sauce and tortila chips. My friend had the ahi tuna salad, which she loved, and my other friend had a chicken sandwich that he wolfed down, so I assume he liked it. The menu isn't too expensive for Ocean Drive- my wrap was $12, the ahi tuna salad was $14, and beers were $4 (including tip, obviously for South Beach). The food came really quickly, but the service was just okay; we were happy with everything, but the server never checked in during our meal. He also forgot to bring our drinks, but we're a pretty easygoing crowd, so we didn't care that much. Plus, he was friendly, which helped. For pickier customers, though, the service might be a problem. All in all, a nice spot on Ocean if you want a decent, quick meal. read more

I hate this place with a passion. The food was decent but the scam they run is unbelievable. They stand on Ocean Ave, enticing customers by giving them 20% off their tab. When we hesitated, the hostess showed us a secret $10 menu. So we gave them a try and sat down for a late meal. It was too good to be true. When our bill came, we reminded the waiter that there was supposed to be an additional 20% off. He said that it doesn't apply to the $10 menu items (which all of us ordered from). We then asked the hostess and she said she would take care of it. Apparently she doesn't know what she's doing because she came back with an apology saying that it didn't apply to the $10 menu. I don't know why there are so many positive Yelp reviews for this place. (The reviews were the main reason we chose the place). It's located on one of the main drags in Miami Beach, quite touristy and of course, over priced. If you order the pizza, you should be aware that it actually comes from the neighboring restaurant, and this place marks it UP so you are actually paying more for the same thing you could get next door. The server also delivered my two dining companions' pizzas WAY before mine, so that they were almost finished before I got my pasta. It's just common sense to deliver food together. Beware the drink menu. There's a reason there are no prices on it. You'll get a giant drink, granted, but they are $25 a piece, and definitely not worth it. Giant ripoff in my opinion. Great spot! We stayed at the Pelican Hotel over the Christmas Holiday and ate here for breakfast (when we were up by then - LOL!) and made it back for happy hours most days. The food was good, some days better than others, but good. The drinks were tasty - no complaints. The service was good, too, and the waiters etc. were friendly and nice. read more

Ditto on the surprise as to how many rave reviews this place has. The food was decent, and at a good price, but service was appalling. Two of us sat down and ordered a few dishes to share. The Caesar salad was okay, served with dressing on the side (yay! a place that doesn't drench their salad themselves - you have the choice), but the chicken sandwich was dry. Very, very dry. Also got a pasta special, but there wasn't anything too special about it. Had to wave down a waitress (not even ours) to order our food. Waved her down again when we wanted bread (all other tables got theirs right away). Ditto for when we needed balsamic vinegar and olive oil to accompany said delayed bread (and again, all other tables got this instantly). Waved down a waitress to fill up our waters (this time it was ours, yay!). Again, waved down the same poor waitress (the one that's not ours) to get ketchup when our food came. Waved her down yet again when we needed our check. Our waitress came over to check on us only once in the whole meal. This was right after the other waitress had just finished helping us. What was going to be a relatively quick meal turned into a 2-hour ordeal because there was so much gap time. This restaurant is one of my top picks as a local. We went last night and totally enjoyed it as usual. The service was excellent and the food was delicious as always! We tried the Kobe burger and the lobster burger. Delicious! My husband had a glass of Malbech with and loved it with the burger. We had cappucinos, best in town, with the chocolate mousse and pumpkin cheesecake with pecan ice cream. Ambiance is classy, understated, great music. They KNOW what they are doing. It was amusing that a table nearby sent back a delicious pasta dish I've had before because the pasta was al dente. And by one star, I mean negative one. The alright-ness of the seafood black linguini was overshadowed twice over by a drippy ceiling and offensive customer service. I get it, this is Miami Beach around midnight - all I expected was the food and drink I ordered to be delivered to the table. The pasta came and all was OK (nothing spectacular, a little too salty). Even if the service were good, I wouldn't come back for the food. But maybe that's because of the dirty water dripping from the ceiling (lest we forget it rained in Miami that morning) over our table that all of the staff acknowledged with an "Oh, yeah," but no one was in a rush to alert us of... Minor detail. The Pelican has an array of cocktails that come in different sizes. We ordered one cocktail, not knowing about sizes, and they brought us a huge glass to share... ... which would normally not be an issue, if the waiter didn't make up a price for the cocktail. The bill comes, and it reads $25 for the drink. How do you say... absolutely not? Apparently, he wanted to charge us for some other steroid Miami Beach cocktail they serve up, called the Bulldog, which we did not order. Had the issue been that he automatically served us the largest size of the cocktail we actually ordered, we would be dealing with a $19 drink. Still too much, but logically follows. It was clear that he was being disingenuous as soon as we started our discussion, since the response to "This is not the drink we ordered," was "Look, I gave you free shots and didn't charge you for sharing an entree." Sounds like... you're trying to take my money. And people don't like that. Especially people with law school loans. Seeing that my feathers were ruffled, another server jumped into the discussion and decided all would be resolved by two more shots of the humungous drink we couldn't even halfway finish in the first place that they were trying to charge us $25 for! ... ... The concluding act was the server's "offer" to take 20% off the bill. Settled. We still gave a 10% tip, because he was clearly in dire straits... maybe he has law school loans. read more

Lobster was WAY overcooked - almost burnt crisp I would say. Drinks were almost 20 bucks each. The problem I have with this place is that the waiter presented me with an appetizer that was the special for the night and when my bill came out, it was 45 dollars. I am not cheap, but I really haven't been to a place that charges 45 dollars for an appetizer and then fails to tell me the cost. The other appetizers on the menu were around 15 bucks. My friend and I had a wonderful time dining here! I felt like a queen. We sat on the terrace which was perfect for people watching but not too crowded like the street on Ocean Drive usually is. I ordered the crab tuna tartare and it was delicious. I love olives so the olive pate' that it came with was like paradise for me. The crab and the tuna were both fresh and the dish was light and tasty overall! The waiter was very nice and also very good looking, which was a definite plus. The fact that the servers show the specials by using an iPad and pictures is very creative. I loved the feel of the restaurant and I am certainly bringing my friends back again! Everyone knows that Oceans drive is not known for their culinary skills but I was especially disappointed with this place, given the prices. I had the branzino and was beyond disappointed. The fish was flavorless and completely blah. My husband had the sausage pizza. Again very very average. There was more cheese than sausage. I tried the Alfredo from someone else's plate and liked it. Creamy and flavorful. Just a tip - add crushed pepper to make it better. I didn't try it myself but 3 people with me said the Pesto Pasta was very good. If it's your first time then maybe you should give this a go. As for myself I will not be visiting them again so I won't get that opportunity. read more

After many failures and and attitudes from people, we finally decided on Pelican because we were hungry and were offered a free shot (either sex on the beach or house tequila) and 20% off our check! So of course we were instantly sold! The bread they bring to the table is nice with herbs accompanied by oil and balsamic. We ordered plenty and just ate family style. Calamari: not bad, has a spicy sauce to dip with Skirt steak: good sauce and weird version of fries (between fish sticks and uncooked potatoes) Classic Paella: "slappin, pippin, crackin" as my friends would say!!! Very good! Spinach dip: good! Not enough chips though Oysters: amazing!!!! Fresh! We also got the 56oz glass of pineapple mojito! It's very pretty to look at and made with real sugar cane! They will lure you in stating one price and when you're done and ready to pay, the check will come out much higher than what they told you. We got ripped-off by these people here. Very shady and dishonest business. We complained to the manager about price difference "$30" more than what we were anticipated. I glanced over and saw the manager and the waitress winked at each other...that's when I knew they were all in it together. This establishment needs to be reviewed by the Better Business Bureau...I have no tolerance for this kind of dishonesty and shadiness. Me and my wife went to the restroom, they thought we left without paying bills(I don't blame them, a party of four left who were sitting next to our table without ordering anything- probably because of the prices) so they took away our drinks. They provided two more drinks even though we did not ask, so we thought maybe this is complementary. We were charged $25 for those two drinks in the end. So advice for the owner: make sure the customer is clear on the price. Advice for the customer: Don't be shy, be very clear about the price before the waitress takes order. * We had Tagliatelle pasta(I don't remember exactly the name), it was good but certainly not worth $39. *I think the restaurant is nicely located on the ocean drive. You won't miss the crowd on Ocean drive and also won't be bothered by the crowd. *I have no comment on the price other than saying all the restaurants on Ocean Drive is just too pricey. read more

Our First Day in Miami we stopped here for lunch. Wow all I can say was the food was amazing and the service was great. Our host was a very suave gentleman by the name of Miguel! Talk about entertaining...... He was superb! We had the East Coast. This dish is perfect for 2 and with 2 for 1 drinks (which I have to admit the drinks were kinda weak) how could we pass this up? We had 2 8oz. Lobsters, 4 king crab legs, shrimp, clams,mussels and calamari all served over yellow rice and drawn butter. Can you say Yummy!!??? This place sits right on Ocean between 8th and 9th. This would have been 5 stars if the staff was a bit more attentive. I'm pretty patient and tolerant for wait staff as I know that it is a very tough job. I think anytime you need something that you should have can be forgiven quickly if your wait staff checks in routinely and frequent, however that wasn't the case this morning. We had to ask for silverware, water and other item by flagging down various members of the staff throughout our meal. That was the only disappointment. Our food however, was awesome. 5 stars for that. The super yogurt was delicious as was the omelet special. No complaints with the food, only service. read more
