2nd visit and it was very disappointing. Appetizers: Originally I ordered the oysters but they were out of them so I ordered the fried green tomatoes and fried mushrooms. There was nothing special about the mushrooms, they were OK. The tomatoes had a great presentation and were topped with crab meat. The crab meat was mushy and had the texture of chicken salad. It was very bland. Cup of shrimp gumbo: It was ok. Heavy on the okra and had about 4 pieces of shrimp. Mind you, it wasn't whole pieces of shrimp, but bits of pieces of shrimp. Flavor was ok, not spicy at all. Fish tacos: Finally, I got something good. Fish seemed fresh and it had good flavor. My GF ordered the sirloin and she didn't like it at all. It looked like a rib-eye, was very fatty and tough. She didn't finish it and we didn't ask to remove it from the check. And it wasn't removed from the check so we paid for it. DELICIOUS, RELAXED, CHEAP! Don't be put off by snob reviews. This is what it is: an unassuming strip center cafe open for breakfast and lunch...with fresh, delicious food and friendly staff/owners. Yes, there is an unfortunate history to the place. It was featured on Restaurant: Impossible and the results weren't great. But that was under DIFFERENT OWNERSHIP. The current owners are doing their best to reverse the image and make a good go of it. The atmosphere is extremely casual and the decor is leftover. So what? We have been regulars here since we discovered it had been sold and gave it another shot... because the food is GOOD and the service is friendly!! If you are looking for fancy, you're right... Go elsewhere. But if you want good food, relaxed atmosphere, friendly service, and good prices, give this neighborhood cafe a shot! read more

I visited this restaurant on a Saturday morning (around 9 am). It was mostly empty except for a group of elderly people. I ordered the southerner plate, which has eggs, hash browns, toast, and chicken fried steak. The food was OK and the gravy on the steak was salty. I won't be returning because there are other breakfast places that appear more appetizing. In retrospect, the emptiness of the restaurant was a huge red flag. read more

Service was slow. They took our drink order and forgot to come back. After 10 min of waiting, we asked the owner if he could take our order and he motioned for a waitress to take our order instead of just taking care of us himself. The food took way to long to arrive based on the fact that there were not busy. I ordered the cheeseburger and my wife had the club sandwich. Both meals were disgusting. I was almost embarrassed for them. We ate not even half our meal and when asked how everything was we said, "just ok". We were not offered the opportunity to offer why it was bad. Tried this place for breakfast and it was delicious! I ordered the Rueben breakfast sandwich with hash browns and Oh my gosh amazing. They serve two sandwiches so hopefully you're hungry! We have come to Pelican Grill for many years. It has gone through a ton of changes! The present owners have been there about a year and a half. We stopped by for breakfast today. This place is ok. The host was very nice but the server and busser were so so. We were not seen by our server but one time when we gave our order. No refills or anything after waiting over 30 minutes for our food which was just average. The pancakes tasted ok but I have never had a pancake you could not cut through with just your fork. We also had grapes that were already turning (had a soft bad spot) on the kids fruit plate. The eggs Benedict were ok but the ham was very small and thin. The scrambled eggs were not scrambled well and were not fluffy at all. Cooked with the white and yellow showing and browned while cooking. My husband's coffee had grounds in the bottom of his cup.The busser kept passing us up when I stacked the finished plates to one side which she could clearly see. Wanted to eat local for breakfast. A lot went wrong during our experience here, any one of which would not have been a big deal. The main issue I found most inexcusable was the time to get our food. It took like 45 minutes for simple breakfast fare. The staff just did not give the impression that they had much experience in the business. Not one to complain but today was a very bad experience. Took my 90 year old dad Korea Veteran (Memorial Day) for a good breakfast. Unfortunately we never got a chance to eat. We sat down had a cup of coffee. We placed our order 10:25 left at 11:10 Several customers came in after us and they got their food eat paid and left. I asked the waitress what's going on and she began to tell me that folks who came in after us had their tickets turned in before ours. She even tried to show me the time on the tickets to prove she was correct. I asked here to look at the sign up sheet and she will see our names listed before theirs. I guess we had a bad waitress who forgot to turn in ticket in timely manner. My dad even said to her to tell the cooks that today is Memorial Day and if we can get served quickly. Found this place tucked away in the corner of a shopping center. When I went inside the decor and atmosphere was definitely a lot nicer than you would expect from the outside. They have a lot of unique and healthy options. I chose the green drink and the breakfast Ruben. Both were great and the service was top notch. The servers were genuinely enthusiastic and attentive. We have been there 3 times in total. Today was the last. The service had been good before, food is good, but this time around, the service definitely left something to be desired. The waitress was rude, clearly did not want to be there. They were out of fresh fruits, which would be no big deal but it was a bit surprising to run out so early since it was only 9am and it was Mother's Day. I also do not think serving coffee to a client a mug with Jesus on it is appropriate unless the business advertises itself as religious. Not everyone shares the same religious views. This place was creepy. We went and the menu only had a handful of options. My husband ordered a club sandwich and it had no tomatoes, lettuce or mayo on it. Mostly breakfast items on the menu. Bathrooms were disheveled and toilet wasn't secured to the floor! And they took forever to bring our food out. Is it me, or should they be serving seafood with it being named Pelican Grill? It's SOOOOO hot inside! I couldn't even eat my food. I asked politely if they could make it any colder in there and the manager/owner flat out said, "no" and walked off. I'm normally cold everywhere I go; it's an anomaly for me to be hot or even sweat anywhere. We sat in the middle of the restaurant; so, it couldn't have been direct sunlight through the window of heat from the kitchen. Don't order eggs unless you're comfortable with clear egg whites. We were really excited to try a new place for breakfast that's local to Clear Lake. We won't be back to this one for one reason... THEY RUINED THE BACON. Possibly the worst of all food crimes... the bacon was both burned tasting and chewy and by the time it got to our table, was cold. When paired with flavorless eggs and a cold not fluffy waffle, this was not a good start to Saturday. Also, there was a wet soggy mustache on my coffee cup that looked like a dripping caterpillar. Decided to try the Pelican Grill for 9:30a.m. Sunday morning breakfast since I've been reading about their makeover. When I arrive, about half the tables were occupied and an employee told me to sit where ever I wanted. Okay...but then I sat, and sat and sat and was apparently invisible since 2 other tables sat and were given menus and silverware. Had to finally wave at someone to be recognized. After that, the service was just fine. Two other couples sat down next to me and they too were ignored for an unreasonable amount of time. Suggested they flag someone and that's what they did. Now onto the menu and food. I ordered water and coffee with cream. They both arrived in an appropriate amount of time, but the coffee was accompanied by a little metal pitcher of reduced fat milk. Not my idea of "coffee with cream". Mrs. Owner brought my food out, and I politely asked her about half and half, or cream, or an alternative to the milk. She graciously offered me a new cup of coffee and a side of the little tubs of half and half that they had in the back. Much better, thank you. Typical breakfast fare and my omelet was just fine, although the little bitty plastic cup of the requested salsa was a little too little. The hash browns tasted slightly of old grill grease, so putting the offered ketcup on them is probably what I should have done. The toast was nice at it was a whole grain bread, which is what I asked for. I'm hoping this place gets it's act together soon, or this family owned grill is going to not make it, no matter how much effort was put forth on "Restaurant Impossible". read more

We saw the Pelican Grill on Restaurant Impossible and wanted to check it out. The service was lacking. When we ordered, the waiter asked us what sides came with our meals. I had to read the menu to him. However, the food was great...when we finally got it. There were only two other tables besides us, yet we had to wait over an hour for our order. The owner did give us one meal free to make up for the wait. I appreciate that he tried to compensate us for the poor service, but we were still disappointed that we wasted so much time sitting there! I recommend getting carry-out so you don't have to wait on them. read more
