Super perfect spot for a quick and delicious dinner! We ordered the chicken parm and spaghetti, wings, and cheesy garlic bread. Everything tasted yummy! Very impressed with how quickly we were served our food after ordering. There was a family of 10+ before us, but that didn't slow anything down at all. Over all, really impressed with this spot. My husband and son absolutely love this place for the baked penne NY and the cheese garlic bread. I love the cheese garlic bread and I get the baked penne. A local treasure! This is an unpretentious small restaurant that far exceeds the typical definition of a cafe. I had dinner here with three other well-traveled foodies and we were all pleasantly surprised with the extensive menu choices and the superb execution of their recipes. The fresh green ceasar salad, the sizzling roasted beet salad, the Maui-influenced salad nicoise, the crispy crust goat cheese and mushroom pizza, the warm focaccia bread with olive oil and balsamic vinegar and the tiramisu were all delicious. Juan was a great host who was so accommodating and a pleasure to talk with. He told us how the restaurant made lunches for two local schools during the most challenging times of the pandemic. Slightly old fashioned place but that is no matter at all. I ordered a prosciutto, peppers, onion and provolone sandwich. The sandwich was really nice. It was really good quality prosciutto that had been selected and quite a bit of it, a nice salad mix as well and lovely pickles and olives on the side. The olives were small with a lovely subtle flavour. This was a very well made sandwich which made a mighty sound lunch. Service was lovely and the sandwich came out speedily. I liked it here. I would give Penne Pasts 10 stars if I was able to do this on Yelp. My family and I had the most wonderful dinner there last night. The food was absolutely fantastic and prepared perfectly. I had their eggplant parmigiana and I can honestly say it was the best I have ever eaten hands down! Juan, the owner, was as nice as can be and all the servers were top notch too. Where to start... This Italian Restaurant is simply overpriced and very average. Our food items came almost 10 minutes apart which seems to indicate poor planning and execution. My Penne was overcooked and rather bland. I usually do not write too many bad reviews, but this one just stood out to me. I was also informed midway through the meal that they ran out of Penne. My sister had to order something else, without apology. The restaurant is called, "Penne Pasta", and they ran out of Penne. Good luck to you if you try it, I am just voicing my opinion :) read more

What a great find! This amazing restaurant had fantastic food and great service. The owner Juan shared his story with us on how he, a mexican, came to own an Italian restaurant! The food was really awesome and the environment was very family friendly. Some of Juan's family was dining there that night and he introduced us to them. This place is a jewel among the other contemporary restaurants scattered around Lahaina. One thing amazing which I wish every restaurant catered was parking! They have a big lot behind them which you can enter off of Wainee Street. The inside is refreshing with AC and ceiling fans keeping the place ventilated and the eating area is very spacious. The bathrooms were clean and private, something that should never be overlooked or unappreciated. There's one for boys and one for girls that serves one person at a time. What I love is there Garlic cheese bread, it's so delicious and flavorful definitely a must for those garlic bread lovers out there. Their pastas are their specialty but every dish I've eaten here was full of flavor and nothing seemed artificial. Their pizza crust comes out perfect every time! I for one am a person who loves my crust thin and crunchy (and not that black charred kind of crunchy). Their prices are definitely worth the quality you get out of it. And one more thing worth noting is that for those Gluten free lovers you can get their pizzas without gluten for an extra $3. I love it, and I'll always swing by at least once whenever I visit Maui again. read more

It took me 7 & 1/2 years to find good Italian food in Texas, I must be getting better at it because it only took 5 days for me to find good Italian food in Maui. If you're looking for upscale, this is not your place. If you're looking for good, solid Italian food, then you are in the right place. It reminded me of some of the pizzerias back East (NJ). It's small/quaint and comfortable. The dishes are not extravagant but good tasting and decent portions. The biggest thrill I had was that my wife actually liked it and she doesn't like trying new places to eat. She had the chicken parm w/ spaghetti and I had the baked penne w/ chicken. Both were delicious. We'll be going back again tomorrow night. The prices are shockingly normal also. And I don't mean "tourist trap" normal, I mean normal. It's a small little, unappealing cafe on Dickerson st but the food quickly makes up for it. The chicken parm was cooked perfect, the noddles were al dente and the sauce was very flavorful. This restaurant was a big disappointment. The popular and overall excellent guidebook "Maui Revealed" just dripped all over it, so I feel obliged to share a different view. Yes, the prices are quite reasonable, especially for Maui, but the food falls way short. Diners order at the register and then take a number, along with some puny little olives, to their table. The Caesar Salad I started with was actually OK. However, the Chicken Parmesan with Spaghetti that followed was bland and uninspired. I ate there with three other friends, and they pretty much felt the same way about their food. So we left to take post-dinner stroll on Front Street. This must be Maui's version of Pasta Pomodoro and it doesn't disappoint. After a rather tiring day touring the island, we really didn't feel like waiting in line at any of the restaurants on Front St. Thankfully Penne Pasta was only a block away from our resort so we decided to call in a togo order and enjoy it in the comfort of our room. Problem. No one is answering the damn phone. I try again...and again...after 15 times, I give the hell up and walk my ass over there. Lady at the counter: "Whoopsie! I hit the wrong button and turned off the phone!" Um..good job, woman! Anyhow, she was apologetic and we placed our order: Two orders of Mixed Greens: comes with feta but I requested without. Is it just my family or do all Chinese oldies run at the sight of cheese? Anyhow, the salads were quite large we ended up saving them to eat on the flight back to the mainland the next day. In another review, someone said the salad dressing tasted like it had gone sour, but I disagree. I think it's their own house concoction and we actually found it quite tasty. Oh, and it comes with a lot of edamame beans. Yum! Penne Pomodoro: It's quite basic...ragu of plum tomatoes, basil and garlic. That being said, it was pretty good especially when it's piping hot. Linguine Clam Sauce: Chopped clams, lemon, garlic, parsley and butter. Loaded with clams and the sauce was perfectly tangy without being overwhelming. It was all ready in 15 minutes flat and other than the phone hiccup, this meal was an overall success. And like others said, it's much more affordable than most other things on the island. read more

I can't believe as I write this that Penne Pasta has only a 3.5 stars here on Yelp. I'm going to challenge that a bit, here's why. We've eaten there twice on our recent stay in Maui. Granted, this is sit down, but waiter-minimal. You purchase your food at a counter and they bring it to your table. It isn't on a beach, it's just hidden a way a bit on a side street leading into Front Street, the main tourist drag in Lahaina. So, I understand that if ambiance is what you are after or what you expect, that you might ding the overall rating a bit. For us though, it is a place we are very comfortable! :) Most recently I enjoyed the special, Parmesan Mahi Mahi on Penne. Superb! For Appetizer, we had their amazing garlic bread - I think they do a standard Garlic Bread, two halves, then invert them w/ some Mozzarella in between the pieces and do a final bake of that. Awesome! We also had the special appetizer Roasted Garlic Skillet Clams. Another winner! Joie enjoyed the Baked Penne this last time out, and the first time we were there she had the Mozzarella Sandwich - also tasty. The kids meals were good, the flatbread pizzas, cheese or pepperoni were winners for them. For a very casual dining experience, and one that you can generally afford more than once or twice, this is highly recommended! read more

One of only two restaurants my wife and I visited more than once while we spent three weeks on Maui for our honeymoon. The dining room was simple and comfortable. We ate both times indoors, but the restaurant also had outdoor seating which if it hadn't been chilly the nights we went, we would have taken advantage of. The baked penne was fabulous. Fresh herbs, tender pasta and good cheeses. Like some reviewers have remarked, the portions aren't huge, but I found that when I had finished my plate I was full and content. We also tried the pasta pomodoro and their basic pizza. Again, delicious with fresh ingredients. If we ever visit Lahaina again, this would be our first stop for dinner. read more

This place was recommended by my mother in law and as a pasta lover, so I had to try it. My visit was in April 2011 and I forgot to review it until now, but I still remember what I did not like about the place! I ordered chicken piccata which is supposed to be lemony. There was NO lemon at all in this dish. It did not even look like piccata so I complained to the waitress that it was not what I ordered. I was told that this was their chicken piccata. I think they needed to look up the definition of piccata as this was something different entirely. Hopefully it is better now than it was when I was there, but I am not interested in going back.
