The service was really friendly and welcoming. We did family style and started off with the Little Gems salad (so good, 10/10) and the Albacore Tartare (loved the pistachio nuts). For our main dinner, we had the Rigatoni and Agnolotti, both were delicious and really big actually. Between the 3 of us, we barely finished it. And the Brussel sprouts (the cheese reminded me of a grilled cheese sandwich). To finish it off, we had the Lemon Olive Oil cake and it was delicious and so was their French press coffee. Like a lot of people, I came here because of the glowing reviews and all the hype online. I genuinely wanted to love it but sadly I cannot recommend this place at all. My friend and I arrived right when they opened at 5:30PM knowing we didn't have a reservation and were taking a chance. We were actually the first people in the restaurant and got lucky with two seats at the bar. The staff was incredibly friendly and accommodating and at that point I was feeling excited and optimistic. Unfortunately, things went downhill almost immediately. The first red flag was that both my friend's fork and my plate were dirty with food residue on it. Remember, this was right at opening and we were the first customers seated. To be fair, the staff continued to be kind and helpful throughout the meal by walking us through the menu and answering questions thoughtfully. We ordered the Wild Arugula salad and the Cacio e Pepe. The salad was underwhelming. For $12, it was essentially a pile of arugula drenched in lemon juice. Not terrible, just nothing memorable. Then came the pasta. I've eaten a lot of pasta, including in Italy, so I understand al dente, but this was genuinely undercooked. We debated whether to say anything because the restaurant has such a devoted following, but we decided to explain that the pasta was more underdone than we were comfortable with and asked if it could be remade. A second bowl arrived and was essentially identical to the first. Maybe there was a little more sauce, but the pasta was still noticeably undercooked and crunchy in the center. At that point, I genuinely couldn't understand the hype surrounding this place. What made the experience even more uncomfortable was what happened afterward. Because we had sent the dish back, it seemed like word spread through the entire restaurant. Multiple staff members came over throughout the rest of the evening to ask about the meal. I understand they were trying to be attentive and I appreciate the intention, but having nearly every staff member mention that they had "heard" we sent the pasta back made us feel singled out rather than cared for. The one thing I can wholeheartedly compliment is the space itself. The restaurant is beautiful, with a great atmosphere and ambiance. It's a lovely place to sit but a great ambiance can only carry a meal so far. The combination of dirty silverware, dirty plates, undercooked pasta twice and an awkward dining experience afterward is something I will never get over. Ambience was super cute but for the price point, I was disappointed in the service and food. We were a party of two and initially seated less than 6 inches from the table next to us. It was very awkward and not great for the two separate couples. Luckily since our reservation was towards the end of the night, they were able to move us to a 4 seater table that also was not right under the speaker. The big eye tuna appetizer was my favorite dish! We chose to eat our pieces in one bite and the flavors all paired so well together. The tuna was buttery and the Fresno chilis offered a nice bite to the dish. There was a smoky element that m reminded me of the smokiness in baba ganoush and it was so good with the sauce that looked like hummus but tasted like seafood. 10/10 The pastas were also good but I am spoiled by my partner who makes us pasta. I think the craftsmanship was outstanding and way better than what I have at home. But idk if the dough was much better than the dough my partner makes, so mb that's a testament to my partner's pasta dough. I loved the artistry in the green pea, mint, and lemon pasta. It looked like peas in a pod and the flavor of the filling was amazing. The green sauce was so pretty, although it lacked a bit in flavor. We also got the agnolotti. Again, they were perfectly formed pastas. But this filling and sauce was missing something, imo. Some fresh lemon and a little extra salt might have helped. The reason I am giving 3 stars is for the branzino. You don't get a whole branzino, it's closer to half of one. The branzino was also not properly deboned. One bite was so filled with bone and cartilage that I had to spit it into my napkin. If you're charging so much for fish and a fine dining restaurant, I think the fish MUST be properly deboned. Unfortunately it wasn't, and it was hard to spot the bones because it was covered in fennel or a sauce. That made it even more dangerous to eat. Zucchini and beans side was okay but the beans were a little harder than I like. I wouldn't reorder. Dessert was good! I loved the cherries on the chocolate. Great spot for an elevated yet laid back dinner experience. Service is impeccable. So informative and friendly. Dishes were all very thoughtfully presented. Pea crostini - so pretty and so tasty, the peas taste like spring. Really appreciated that the bread was pre-portioned, and somehow they found a sweet spot where the bread is crisp but not hard to slice through. The cacio e pepe was not served very warm, so it congealed rather quickly - would have loved to have this piping hot, but pastas are all delicious. Can't beat fresh noodles, so chewy and bouncy. Very ambient lighting and felt slightly upscale. We shared the focaccia and the Raviolini di Scarola. The focaccia was simple but fresh, warm, and delicious. The raviolini was a recommendation by the waiter, but unfortunately it missed the mark for me. The raviolini had good consistency but I didn't feel like the toppings complemented the dish well (namely, the celery). The vibes and service were both on point though. Our server cleared our table between every course and made sure our water was never empty. $18 Albacore Tartare - tomato, calabrian chili, pistachio: the tomato flavor was really good with the fish $29 Pappardelle Ripiene - walnut, butternut squash, labneh, golden raisin, chili: the pappardelle was folded and the filling was inside it, kind of like a very long ravioli in the shape of a cinnamon roll. The flavor was incredible: savory, with some pops of citrus, the creamy labneh/ yogurt, and the raisins to add a fresh pop of flavor. $29 Spaghetti alla Puttanesca - tomato, anchovy, caper, taggiasca olive, pangrattato. This was perfect for anyone who likes a rich creamy pasta. The sauce coated every noodle. The tomato flavor was enhanced by the anchovy. If I could only get one thing again, I would get this. Between two we shared: the melon prosciutto, the tuna crudo, a red sauce pasta, and the pork chop--every single dish was so good and flavorful. You can skip the focaccia - it's more like a slightly crisp Parker house roll and needed more olive oil. All the pastas were well executed but I just didn't personally love their take on arabiatta or the sugo they paired with the agnolotti. I knocked a half star off because I ordered an $82 steak and it was very cold when brought out. Yes, I know that you're supposed to rest a steak before serving. And yes, there's a very hot carafe of veal jus that you pour over the steak but even then, it was way too cold. Someone came by to check on us so I let them know the steak was cold. They seemed unsure what to do and their reply was "I'll check with the kitchen." I then watched 3 people in the kitchen confer, some looked confused and some looked annoyed, and then a 4th person was called over and more discussion was had. It's an open kitchen so I got to watch all of this while feeling very awkward. Finally someone else came over and asked me if I wanted a refund, the steak brought back cold, or the steak heated up. Overall not a great moment for a high-end restaurant to put the problem back on the customer as I would think the standard solution would be to just remake the dish correctly. If it was an app, I probably wouldn't have complained, but for $82 - a steak should be served correctly. read more

The lush greenery of the dining room was perfect for a summer dinner, and we chortled at the adult Rainforest Cafe vibe (but in a good way!). We were paralyzed by choice, so opted for the dinner party (prix fixe), which ended up being excellent. Four starters to share rolled in quickly: 1) albarcore tartare with a generous sprinkle of pistachio and tomato, dabbed in calabrian chili, 2) salmon on a bed of dilled labneh, 3) tomato caprese, and 4) prosciutto & melon. The last two were the least interesting, and it was unclear why the melon was lackluster considering how in the midst of melon season we are. The double pastas were great, with the ricotta tortelloni as the standout. Tonnarelli cacio e pepe was fine, though to be fair we could have eaten this more speedily. Usually the meat main is meh, but the pork chop was great! I don't recall the grilled zucchini... Dessert was a cooling panna cotta, I forget what flavors. As others have mentioned, most of the dishes for each course are all brought out at once. You can take your time to eat them all, but I can see why it could be slightly overwhelming/faster paced than what you may be used to. Standout dishes for the dinner party menu (required for a party of 10) were King Salmon (salty, cream, and herby), Heirloom Tomato Caprese (good amount of tang and cheesiness), and the Cappelletti di Mais (rich & creamy with bursts of sweet corn). SOLID spot for Italian! The place is SO cute and vibey with hanging plants all around. Everything we tried off the menu was fantastic and ambiance was perfect - you could come for a special celebration night as we did or just elevated casual. We got the albacore tartare to start which had a unique combination of flavors for tartare - Calabrian chili, pistachio, tomato, olive oil - and it was just heavenly. The asparagus was in a different more lemon-y olive oil and was also fantastic. We then had the arancini, a fan favorite and it didn't disappoint! It was dry, and not soft or fluffy at all. More like an overbaked dinner roll sprinkled with some rosemary. However, the Pea Leaf & Ricotta Casoncelli was the highlight for me. Penny Roma is a beautiful little restaurant that has solid and slightly inventive Italian food. The pasta is the highlight here, and all the pastas were great! We went for the set menu since it was our first time here, and it was a great way of trying several different pastas. They were also very gracious about a vegetarian set menu for my husband, which was so kind of the servers and the chefs. The decor was beautiful - lots of plants and cute little decorations. My favorite pastas were the agnolotti and the cacio e pepe - they were so delicious. They were rich, cream, and al dente without being gummy. They do sell their fresh pasta before the restaurant opens for dinner, and I certainly do regret arriving too late to buy some of the fresh pasta. The only thing about the dinner I REALLY didn't enjoy was how cold the restaurant was during the entirety of dinner. There were plenty of people, and unfortunately I was never able to take off my small puffer jacket. If the restaurant had been slightly warmer, it would have been an excellent dinner! read more

Headed over with a friend for dinner and didn't make a reservation but they were able to accommodate us on a Thursday night at around 7:30 pm. It is pretty spacious and bright inside with lots of greenery and modern fixtures. The menu was pretty straightforward but they gave us some popular recommendations and how much to order for two people. Mushroom Arancini - This was definitely the highlight of our meal. The arancini was a ball of savoriness with a lightly crisp outside and moist, flavorful inside. It was rich in pepper and garlic flavor from the gravy and strong cheesiness from the fontina on top. Tortelloni di Zucca - The dish looked like a piece of art and a decent portion size. The pasta was piping hot but kept a good texture which I saw is made fresh daily on the menu. It was sweet from the brown sugar but buttery, lightly aromatic and comforting with the squash inside. Overall, a great place for a date night or dinner with a friend. We ended the starters with the spring salad. A mix between the two. Health because there were green things, but also cheeky honey notes on the walnuts After a brief wait we had three pasta dishes. The green one was super creamy, a lovely texture and what I did not expect reading leak and asparagus in the ingredients. The cacio e pepe gave a lovely kick with the pepper, hard to go wrong there, and offered a different kind of richness. We were also gifted the crab pasta which you HAVE to get. If you can get reservations-great! My friend and I got lost exploring and we were running 10 min late. Texted the hostess and she was communicative and kind and when we got there she had a nice table on hold for us despite the place poppin'! The waitress was informative and funny and she was knowledgeable about wine--did a good pairing for us and steered me away from wine she thought I wouldn't like but gave me a tasting (she was right!) This restaurant has been on my list for a while and finally decided to come for sf restaurant week. The arancini was to die for. The leek asparagus cappelletti was such a flavor bomb. We had amazing service, filling portions of pasta and in a beautiful restaurant. What else could anyone ask for. Definitely a great choice if you are in this part of town. read more
