    Spring pea crostini
    Tasha H.

Great spot for an elevated yet laid back dinner experience. Service is impeccable. So informative and friendly. Dishes were all very thoughtfully presented. Pea crostini - so pretty and so tasty, the peas taste like spring. Really appreciated that the bread was pre-portioned, and somehow they found a sweet spot where the bread is crisp but not hard to slice through. The cacio e pepe was not served very warm, so it congealed rather quickly - would have loved to have this piping hot, but pastas are all delicious. Can't beat fresh noodles, so chewy and bouncy. Nothing complicated, just yummy.

Flour + Water had a long wait on a Saturday evening, so the employees there recommended that we check out their sister restaurant Penny Roma instead. We were seated right away here. Very ambient lighting and felt slightly upscale. We shared the focaccia and the Raviolini di Scarola. The focaccia was simple but fresh, warm, and delicious. The raviolini was a recommendation by the waiter, but unfortunately it missed the mark for me. The raviolini had good consistency but I didn't feel like the toppings complemented the dish well (namely, the celery). The vibes and service were both on point though. I would come back to try other pasta dishes.

We finally made it out to this gorgeous restaurant for sf restaurant week' The interior is super pretty and romantic with lots of greenery and tons of seating. Their restaurant week menu was so delicious, starting with the arancini and the little gem salad. The pastas were perfect. The rigatoni cacio e pepe was so perfectly cheesy and the little pea ravioli pockets burst with flavor. Their pork chop was so well cooked also, super tender and not dry at all. We finished the night with a decadent chocolate torte All of the food came out so fast and the servers were so attentive about clearing dishes and bringing out next courses Can't wait to go back

This is my new favorite dinner spot! Everything we had was delicious and the service was great. Our server cleared our table between every course and made sure our water was never empty. $18 Albacore Tartare - tomato, calabrian chili, pistachio: the tomato flavor was really good with the fish $29 Pappardelle Ripiene - walnut, butternut squash, labneh, golden raisin, chili: the pappardelle was folded and the filling was inside it, kind of like a very long ravioli in the shape of a cinnamon roll. The flavor was incredible: savory, with some pops of citrus, the creamy labneh/ yogurt, and the raisins to add a fresh pop of flavor. $29 Spaghetti alla Puttanesca - tomato, anchovy, caper, taggiasca olive, pangrattato. This was perfect for anyone who likes a rich creamy pasta. The sauce coated every noodle. The tomato flavor was enhanced by the anchovy. If I could only get one thing again, I would get this. The orange sorbetto was also good but I was so full by that point.

Casoncelli Siciliano w/ wine on the side :)

Penny Roma had cute and romantic vibes here! Our waitress was friendly, fun, and easy to chat with. The overall decor felt warm and inviting, which was ideal for a date night! I was informed the pasta dishes were made from scratch, which is great for that homemade taste. Like many Italian restaurants, the focus seems to be more on presentation than large portions. I ordered the Casoncelli Siciliano because it was the most different out of all dishes. It came with cauliflower, nettle, and pine nuts. Each bite was delicious and the pasta was cooked well. Even the presentation was beautiful. For what you get, it is a bit expensive for the portion size. Therefore, I suggest dinner should be ordered with an appetizer and wine pairing for a complete meal :)

    Garlic noodles

All three dishes brought something g to the table that was amazing. The Brussels sprouts were bright and tangy and the Parmesan chips on them were the perfect umami to balance it. The arrabiata had the perfect al dente to bite to it and the sauce was super flavorful along with the pieces of cheese melted throughout. The garlic noodles were so butter and rich with a small kick from the chili crisp. Inside the decor is also lovely, very modern with greenery and high ceilings but still warm with fhe heaters. Service was pretty quick too! Lovely meal!

Every pasta dish was cooked perfectly and all homemade from scratch, super chewy in the best way and every dish was really well-flavored without being heavy. You can tell they care about texture and balance. The focaccia was also a standout: warm, fluffy, and perfect for dipping into any leftover sauce. It's the sister restaurant to Flour + Water. There's also a bar right next door, which is nice I f you're waiting for your table and want to grab a drink. It does get busy during peak hours. We came around 6:30pm on a Wednesday night and still waited about an hour, so definitely plan ahead or make a reservation if you can. Worth it though.

Penny Roma delivers on all fronts--gorgeous ambiance, wonderful service, and stellar food!! Was excited to try their sister restaurant since I'm a big fan of Flour + Water (as well as their pizzeria) and it was on brand for their fresh ingredients and delicious food. The high ceilings combined with the greenery and airiness throughout makes it almost feel like you're sitting outside even indoors, and it's a lovely setting for a delicious meal. Between two we shared: the melon prosciutto, the tuna crudo, a red sauce pasta, and the pork chop--every single dish was so good and flavorful. The pork chop we ordered per our waiter's recommendation, and isn't the type of dish we'd initially gravitate toward, but the preparation and sauces impressed us and it was one of our favorite items that dinner.

Romantic atmosphere, fabulous and friendly service, delicious eats! Pasta cooked al dente to perfection and both the primavera and lamb & beef ragu were super flavorful! A week later, and we are STILL thinking about that ragu! Would come back again and again! Focaccia was chef's kiss too!

Great service, great ambiance, even better food! The tuna tartare was out of this world! Definitely get that if you're a fan. The focaccia is a must! I tried their little gem salad and Agnolotti dal Plin (kinda like ravioli) as well! Both great!

no misses but the baccello was the most unique! pleasantly surprised with the peas + pistachio flavor and enjoyed it. pasta texture chewy in a good way, solid focaccia, the house made burrata in the rigatoni was a great add-on. i do wish their sauces were more special though, maybe had too high of expectations. walked in on sunday evening, really spacious counter seats in their pasta room.

The lush greenery of the dining room was perfect for a summer dinner, and we chortled at the adult Rainforest Cafe vibe (but in a good way!). We were paralyzed by choice, so opted for the dinner party (prix fixe), which ended up being excellent. Four starters to share rolled in quickly: 1) albarcore tartare with a generous sprinkle of pistachio and tomato, dabbed in calabrian chili, 2) salmon on a bed of dilled labneh, 3) tomato caprese, and 4) prosciutto & melon. The last two were the least interesting, and it was unclear why the melon was lackluster considering how in the midst of melon season we are. The double pastas were great, with the ricotta tortelloni as the standout. Tonnarelli cacio e pepe was fine, though to be fair we could have eaten this more speedily. Usually the meat main is meh, but the pork chop was great! I don't recall the grilled zucchini... Dessert was a cooling panna cotta, I forget what flavors. Wines were well-paired, and service was friendly/snappy. Will definitely be back!

I've made it a mission to hit every Flour + Water restaurant in SF, so this was next to the list! I've been to Flour and Water and I wasn't the most impressed with their pastas but wanted to give this a chance. The ambiance is great and we really loved our waitress! Everyone was quick and kind. We ordered two pastas, the prosciutto, and the arancini - everything was solid! The two pastas we got were cooked to perfection and had an enormous amount of flavor. We also loved the arancini - it was nice, light, and understated. We took home some cute matchboxes but overall would come back! Perhaps with a larger group or to try their dinner party menu!

Is there heated outdoor seating in the winter?

I'm looking for a retirement party for about 70 people, budget $70 person maximum, would this be possible?

You probably need to call the place. 70 people feels like you might be renting out the entire restaurant, and I'm guessing they might have a minimum that's higher than $70/person.

    Is there outdoor dining?

Yes! Many tables are set up outdoors, mostly covered

    Is penny Roma dog friendly?

    No, it is not.

My favorites were: the chef's choice crudo, specially the tuna and hamachi(?). The tuna was rich and smokey in a great milky and fragrant fennel sauce. The hamachi in the root veggie wrap with a slight kick, awesome! And the scallop was good too! My boyfriend liked that one, but I thought the chip on top was over powering. My other favorite, the lamb pasta! Loved that texture. Flavor wise, savory and spicy. It was cold out and really warmed me up. Loved the experience. Our waitress was also awesome and patience. She let me try a few of the wine before settling down on a full body red that went very well with my pasta. Oh and the affogato, yum!! Exactly what we were looking for. The standing area next to the bar was also a cute spot to wait while our table was getting ready. Food-wise, we tried the crudo tasting while the other crudos were fine, they didn't stand out nearly as much as the scallop. The corn and mushroom pasta was very tasty, especially the sauce. We also tried the pesto pasta, which also had excellent texture, but the sauce tasted a bit more charred than I would have liked. Overall, I thought the atmosphere and dining experience were stronger than any individual dish. The communal seating and lively dining area gave the restaurant a great energy. I can see why this place is popular, and the tasting menu is a fun way to try a variety.
