I brought my car to the 4164 milwaukee ave location for an emergency flat tire. I had construction debris in the treads. Upon inspection Pepboys found other tires with nails in them too. They patched/repaired all my tires complimentary, including the ones I didn't even know i had.. Thank you Pepboys, i will be back. read more

My car battery died last Friday down the street. I called and asked what time they closed and if they could possibly fix my car by the next day. I was able to get a jump and get my car over here within an hour before they closed at 7. They installed a new battery within 20 minutes! After a recent change in management this Pep Boys has lost its customer friendly appeal. It now resembles a common garage that tries to overcharge you. I would strongly recommend getting a second quote/diagnostic before using their services. I'm not the one-star review sort. But our experience here has been pretty awful. We've taken our car in for 2 mechanical problems, and both encounters have been fairly unfortunate. For sake of wordiness, I will only expand on the second experience. The first time we had to take it in, it was the starter, and the second time, while I was sure it was the alternator, was just the battery. At first I felt relieved because I thought that it would be much less expensive, but they said there were some corroded wires around the battery, and they needed to replace some belt (I obviously know nothing about cars), so it was going to be just under $300. They called us on Monday to let us know the car was ready to be picked up, but I remembered that our front right headlight has just gone out, so I called and asked them if they wouldn't mind doing that as well. They said it would be no problem. Then they called my husband back, and said they had put on a bracket to hold the belt, but they had actually put on the wrong one. So they would have to order a new one. The guy says it will now be closer to $600. My husband told the guy that he had been quoted closer to $300, and that that $600 seemed a little exorbitant. The guys says he understands and that they could definitely help out on the price by giving a discount at the end, and it would be a lot closer to what we were originally quoted. So my husband approved the work. They said it should be done on Tuesday, or Wednesday at the latest. On Thursday we still haven't heard anything, so we call and the car still isn't done. They said it would for sure be done by that night. Nope. We finally get a call in the early afternoon on Friday that it was finished so we bundled up our two kiddos and commuted over there. When we got there I was super disappointed to see that our back left taillight had been smashed and there was a big scratch there that hadn't been there before. I asked them about it and they said it definitely must have been the guy who towed it over there. Then they say that the total is $511! I told them them that when we have spoken on the phone to approve the repairs, the guy we spoke with had said he would give us a discount, but they told us that the guy who said that didn't actually have any authority to give discounts! It must have been obvious that I was frustrated, so they gave us a discount anyway, and we paid the now $450, which still seemed like a lot, and then we went out and started the car. I walked around the car just to double-check things, and the headlight wasn't working! So they come back out and mess with it, then say they just forgot to re-connect it when they were working on it...... I got in the car a day later and it's not working again. At this point though, I don't even want to take it back to them. I don't feel like I can trust anything they say, and the fact that something simple like the headlight isn't working makes me question whether the rest of the work was done honestly. Zero stars if I honestly could. SHORT : SAVE YOUR TIME AND GAS MONEY. DO NOT GO HERE. LONG: I have been a loyal customer to this location for over 6 years and this included multiple cars. Scheduled my appointment for an oil change as I always have, to arrive and be told that "appointments don't matter" and further was informed that vehicles are taken into the garage as a first come first serve basis and that my vehicle that was scheduled for a 10am appointment wouldn't be taken back until after 4:30 pm IF and ONLY if the garage wasn't too busy for the day. I explained that I could not return at that time as I recently moved over 20 miles away from this store but due to loyalty to the store I had made the appointment. I further explained that this was my only day off thus why I scheduled the appointment, to which he responded, "you really have no other days off? Not even a Sunday?" Needless to say, my vehicle was not able to be serviced and I left, giving my business elsewhere. In the end, with utmost confidence I can say that was my final trip to this location or any location of pep boys and would not recommend the company to anyone(not even someone I don't like lol). Pep Boys is dishonest. I took my car in because there is a small nail on the thread of my tire (not on the side). The manager said the nail is too close on the side, and he can't fix/patch it. He asked me if I have insurance for my tires. I decided to take my car without any repair or purchase. I later went to another tire shop and the tech took out the nail immediately. The tech also confirmed that the nail didn't damage the tire at all. I walked out there without paying anything. If I had trusted the manager at Pep Boys, it could have costed me hundreds of dollars to get an unnecessary new tire. I don't appreciate their dishonest and sneaky way of doing business. read more

Pretty disappointed, these guys are so nice to deal with but when it comes to the actual work they don't deliver. I'll explain: I took my car for an oil change and asked the manager if they could rotate the tires (they mention in their website they'll do it for free), he responded sure. I marked my tires before taking my car in. After I picked it up and checked the tires each one was where it was before. I wouldn't make an issue of it if in the receipt it didn't mention a tire rotation. Now I am wondering if they really changed the oil (I must say it does look clearer than before, though). But really, how can I trust this company anymore? read more

They charge dealer prices for mediocre products and services. They try to find any excuse to charge you extra money. They said I needed to change my drum brakes, when I have never even changed my front disc ones. It's possible they just saw the rust and thought that was enough for me to think it was a major brake issue. Never going back here again. read more

UPDATE 5/11/2015: I didn't expect a call but the store Manager, George, gave me a ring a few days later to let me know his District Manager had contacted him about my review. I was told that he looked up the work done and that I had bought the extended warranty which would have covered the re-leak repair, however that was never told to me when I called back before, had it I would have brought the car back in for the repair. I, by my own fault, didn't review the receipt to double check it, but I would have appreciated on my call back when the issue was found again that they checked my order. After being contacted by the manager and the DM himself as well, Pep Boys has offered to take a look at some other repairs my car needs. I appreciated their willingness to correct a mistake and that they value each customer, which was something that was apparent when I previously worked for them and glad to see it hasn't gone away 10 years later. I decided against doing an update because that seems too confusing to Yelp ratings. ORIGINAL 5/7/2015: Background here: I work in the auto industry just no longer in a shop. I needed some work done on my wife's car and I didn't have the time and it was leaking pretty bad. I used to work for Pep Boys and liked taking my cars there for tires, oil changes and whatever else I didn't have the time for. I still turn wrenches, but when in a time crunch like I was when I brought this in I didn't have the time. I usually go to the store on Touhy but they were busy and couldn't fit me in, so I remember this place and booked an appointment. I brought the car in and waited for them to open. The manager (I assume) mentioned a managers special where they go over the entire car and let you know what it needs, rotate the tires and whatever else for a small fee, I agreed to that as well as a new valve cover gasket. I got a call a few hours later that the car was done but it was costing more due to some unforeseen circumstance. I understand, I work on cars, so I agreed to pay the increased amount. I picked up the car and did a quick once over on the work, I could see that the engine was cleaned where it used to leaked so I thought they did the work. Within a few months it was leaking again, how did I know this? When I had it in for tires at the Pep Boys on Touhy in Lincolnwood they pointed it out, as well as a bad boot on the front axle and some other things that were bad the NO ONE let me know when it was in earlier for the gasket. And it was still leaking from the cover gasket too. I called over to the other Pep Boys and was (in essence) told that there was nothing they could do because that specific work wasn't warrantied beyond 90 days. Instead of getting irate I conceded to being had and chalked it up to a learning experience to never visit that Pep Boys on Milwaukee. I ended up going to a friend's shop and paying again to have it fixed, which I should have done to begin with but he is slightly out of my way, so much for the cost of convenience. If you are reading this, don't go here. If you need to use Pep Boys, which overall is a great company, go to another one. I highly recommend the one in Lincolnwood on Touhy, I've had great experiences over there, but avoid this place. Learn from my $500 or so collective experience. read more

Took my car in to replace a burnt out headlight. I got the run around and was told that it would be over $1,000 to replace a headlight! I called around and Midas said they would replace it for $30; they saved me $970. I'm glad that I did my due diligence to avoid being taken advantage of. read more

Brought my car in for two issues...brakes leaking and suspension replacement and check. One got fixed while I was told I need coolant flushing and oil change, mind you I do all my maintenance on my vehicle regularly. My car has been sitting so the brakes were rusted out and was told I needed to replace all rotate and pads I told them just replace the rear all the way and i don't need all the extras I was just short on cash right then and there. I reminded them about the suspension and told me they will get to that...I trusted their word. Well later that day on my way back from work I got the call that my car was ready for pick up. Which told me they wanted to work on what THEY wanted to and didn't , guess they didn't like that I didn't want the extra amenities and cut their labor and cost down. Just be mindful and on them about what you need. There's a reason why I avoid big shops. Last time I'll go to them or any franchise repair shop. read more

I tried this place for the first time. I dropped my car off yesterday at 11 after waiting an hour for them to diagnose it. Then I was told they were ordering some parts and should have it by the time the shop closed at 7pm. I had to call around 4 to ask for an up date and was told they were waiting on a part. That they probably couldn't do it until the next day. I was told we open at 7 so it should be done by 9am Then they called at 630 pm, their first call and I was told we got the part but it will be done at 11. I received no update in the morning so I called at 10 and asked is my car going to be done at 11 because I have an appointment. No it's probably going to be closer to 12. I said I need it by 1130. I arrived at 1130 and my car still has no wheels. Now it is close to 12 and nothing. I hope they do better at repairing than quoting times as my repairs are about $2300. read more

The scheduling this place does is horrendous. I was told on the phone that I could have my car in and out for a brake inspection for $15.99 in 30 minutes. When I arrive for the appointment, I'm asked if I want to drop my car off. Drop my car off for a 30 minute appointment? No? Oh, but actually, the inspection takes longer than 30 minutes- I find out that they lied to me. What they said on the phone wasn't true, which makes it a lie. I got my brakes and brake pads replaced here during the summer. I brought my car in for an oil change in the fall and they told me during that appointment that they noticed something was off with my brakes - which I told them was weird because I'd JUST had my brakes done at THEIR location. The brakes still are no good. I can hear them creaking when I back up. So, I guess I just die in my car because this place blows. Actually, no, I just find another shop which is my plan exactly. We could've had a beautiful relationship - I live down the block and would've taken my car here for everything! But I refuse to work with people who don't understand schedules. Sorry, guys. PS - I sure hope no one puts an automated response here like they've done in the other reviews "here, look, we can pretend like we care!" Pffft. read more

I went here to get my tires rotated and balanced as I wanted to give Pep Boys one more chance after having a terrible experience at the Bucktown location. I will say they kept my business and more. The service was awesome and they got my car in and out in no time. They were honest with me and not intimidated by my vintage Porsche. Both the manager and assistant manager asked me if I was satisfied with their work, and of course I was. I highly recommend this location. read more

Because of my earlier review of Pep Boys on Touhy, I was a bit hesitant to go to any Pep Boys. I had a nail in my tire and this Pep Boys quoted me $15 to fix it. I came in the next day - I was out of there within 15 minutes AND it only cost me $10 after I signed up for a loyalty program. They were courteous and helpful. The "customer service" employee who "took care of me" not only talked over me but laughed at me under his breath and practically snorted his derision when I said I was getting new tires somewhere else. I have since let everyone I know what horrible personal interaction I got at this place and will never be going back there. I would not go this place at all. I gave them many chances since I'm in the neighborhood. Too many times the manager would tell me there isn't a mechanic available till Thursday. I go Thursday and still no one is available. Then it's a different day. This place should be called Jiffy lube because I can never find a mechanic to service me. He gave us great estimates and doesn't beat around the bush. He even went out of his way to try to find additional parts we still needed and kept in touch with us throughout the day. Came here for an oil change. When it was finished we didn't check the oil in the car. The next day I found the oil was empty and looked like it was leaked in to the engine compartment. This placed charged me for an oil change and messed up pretty bad. I lost money on my car that I sold to someone the next day after they released what Happened. Came to this pep boys earlier this afternoon to fix a flat on the my work van. The manager told me it could be fixed for about $30 bucks and the wait was an hour so I decided to wait. An hour later I asked on the status of the van and they told me they were working on it already. A few minutes later he tells me I need a new tire that it wasn't fixable. I was there over an hour and the whole time they never brought the van inside the bay to remove the tire so I'm not sure how they came to that conclusion. Oh let me guess, why make $30 when we could just sell a new tire sounds clever but not with me. I decline the sale they wasted my time but I did find a place down on Cicero Av call Majestic Tire Store and they were able to help me fix my flat. It only took them like 10 minutes to get it done and it was only $15. As a small business owner I'm a big supporter of other small businesses but being down the block from pep boys I thought it was convenient but it was just another reminder that these big name companies are always just trying to go after the bigger sale. I wish I could just give them 0 stars. To the manager of this store, don't be rude and waste peoples time. Communication and keeping your customers happy should always be a priority. read more

Didn't purchase anything but their kind support made me feel on cloud 9. Popped a mile away. Changed into spare with the help of my friend. Went in and they didn't have the tire of my brand or price range. They told me my spare was fine and could get me through the next few days if aired properly. They offered pressure check of all tires so I can get my car to another tire shop for free. I told them I was on my way to a work event. They let me park my car at their parking lot until after my event. Incredibly kind, helpful, honest, and professional. I was feeling helpless and stranded, these gentlemen made me feel like I had my father and brother with me. Thank you. read more

Went for an oil change a few days ago and was told it was a liability for them to put regular oil in my car since my car allegedly took synthetic oil HOWEVER last time my oil was changed at this same location by a MANAGER, he checked my car to confirm it takes regular oil. When I advised the guy working there, he still debated with me until I finally just left. Don't waste your time or give them your money. Buncha bullshit! read more

I did not actually get work done here. These guys wanted to charge me almost $900 for a repair that other Pep Boys would do for about $500. The parts had a 50% markup from another Pep Boys store just a couple miles away. I will avoid this location even though it is very close to me. read more

went in back in late 2012 to get something fixed and knew right away something wasnt right with that place, a very rude and disgusting manager named curtis barnes was very rude to me and my wife, he's first screw up was to tell me that i shouldnt mix anti freeze, there are different ones, screw up number one. screw up number two i had to get something fixed and then i was told a bolt in my car broke and he had to have a new bolt made to go back in, another lie, its cost me over 300 bucks that had to be paid to him and his crappy mechanic oh and by the way his crappy mechanic left his crap in my car also, like an old oil bottle and part of a hose. when i couldnt get the other job done on the car i had to call a tow truck to come get us out of there and as i sat in my car in pepboys parking lot waiting and he walked by several times seeing me in my car and there was a camera watching me the whole time after about an hour i had to use the bathroom and i went in to pepboys already pissed off he tells me oh you can drive that car, you dont need to wait there so i asked him how come you didnt tell me that an hour ago when i was sitting there, he says i didnt know you were there...lie number two you just said you saw me. he then insulted my car and me for having that car it wasnt the greastest car on the road but it was mine, after we left i was so pissed off at mr curtis barnes i called and complained to the main pep boys head quarters and filed a complaint with them and they turned around and gave him my home number when i asked them not too, i had to junk my car soon after his shoty mechanics work if curtis barnes is still working for your company i would suggest you keep a very close eye on him and how he does things... he is extremely rude and disrespectful to people, i will never support your company again. read more

This is the second Pep Boys I stopped at. I. Was looking to have my air conditioner checked. To be fair the first one was a Sunday in Niles. They said they had nobody qualified there on Sunday. So I stopped at this one on my way home from work on a weeknight. I asked about the air conditioner and was told they have had nobody there for over 2 months to work on air conditioners. I was surprises as there is a huge banner over one of the bays saying free ac check??. I pointed out the sign saying I think they should remove that it could be false advertising. The guys laughed and walked away, I called customer service and after waiting 10 minutes on the phone other disconnected the call. Now a week has passed and guess what the sign is still there? I would not patronize businesses that knowing false advertise! read more

I needed four new tires on my car. I arrived at this location at about 6:15 or 6:30. Even though they closed at 7, they kept working on my car well past 8:00 so I would be able to drive home instead of walking through the rain and walk back in the morning to get it before work. They were courteous and explained every step of the work. I really appreciated the extra effort they put in. read more

Came here Saturday with my husband to have tires changed . The gentlemen at the front that helped us promised to be done before 2 pm and he was right . Reasonable prices . Also got a flat tire from a screw the same day on our way to the suburbs so my husband went on Sunday to see what is covered . They are replacing the tire completely and not just repairing . I went in for a simple patch for a flat tire on a Sunday because they were the only tire shop open. The gentleman behind the register took my information and said it was going to be 40-1hr wait, which I thought was strange just for a simple patch and they had a guy free. Any who I said ok let it be. 50 min went by and my car is still not worked on yet. Finally the gentleman came over and told me the tire cannot be fixed because it has a tear on the inside. Which is the same exact thing he told the customer just before me! I confronted him about the lie he just told me and he went back and said he sorry "it's not a tear it just old" well I know my tire is old I just want him to fix my 10 patching job! Clearly nobody wanted to work that day! I told him to release my car and drove 15 min away and got the 10 patching job done! That pep boys said it couldn't be done! The reason they've kept my service for such a long time is because they have earned my trust and loyalty. Managers and technicians always take the extra time to provide detailed explanations about repairs they recommend and why. I have never had a problem with any of their work. Quite honestly, the other negative Yelp reviews regarding this location are baffling to me, as I have never once bore witness to any similar behavior. As a returning customer of several years, they have continually exhibited high levels of professionalism, courtesy, and genuine concern for customer satisfaction. I will continue coming here and would recommend this location to anyone. I would gladly award them with more than a five star rating if it was possible. read more
