Made an appointment with pep boys online for break inspection and oil change. Call day of appointment to let them know i'm running late due to traffic, they say okay. I arrive to the store 5mins later and i'm told they don't have anyone on staff that can fix my breaks. but they can do my oil change. i decided to leave because i don't get my oil changes done here regularly, just thought I would this time given I'd already be there. So, even though they knew what my appointment was for well in advance they don't schedule properly, or have the respect to let you know over the phone before rushing over there. Where to begin? I started off having good luck with these guys, doing auto repair. Since then, I have more than changed my mind. When you can't get a straight answer from the mechanic about what's wrong with your car ('Well, we THINK its this.' You just charged me $120 dollars for a computerized diagnostic, and you THINK you may know what the problem is?), you might want to look elsewhere. When you bring it to them knowing what's wrong, they try to fix hundreds of dollars of other stuff you didn't ask for, and keep your car for like, 4 days, AND NEVER FIX WHAT YOU BROUGHT THE CAR IN FOR, you might want to look elsewhere. When your car, after leaving Pep Boys, feels even more broken and effed up than before you brought it to them, you might want to look elsewhere. When you've sat in their waiting room for 4 hours only to be told they never started work on your car, and won't be getting to it today (After being told it would take an hour), you might want to look elsewhere. When there's a long line of angry customers demanding money back because Pep Boys never fixed what they brought their cars in for, (Which they need to get to work, put food on the table and live and adult life that doesn't revolve around super-bass sound systems in a rusted shitbox of a car), you might want to look elsewhere. If you want shiny spinning things and multi colored lights that serve no purpose for your car, this might be your place. But if you want honest workmanship at an affordable price, you might want to look elsewhere. Case closed. read more

Been bringing my mini here for oil changes for about a year. They are always done fast and their prices are reasonable. Unfortunately, this last June a piece was tossed with the filter that had to stay with the car; it was a stock mini part that cost about $250. (I realize how this sounds... But it was a small plastic piece that fits inside the filter itself... And it's only on early '02 minis...) The missing part was causing a low oil pressure light, and bringing it back to the shop netted nothing. They didn't know what was going wrong. Long story short, took it to a mini specialist, problem was diagnosed, and light no longer comes on... $250 later. The manager, Butch, was very accommodating and paid for the "damages" (part replacement) right away, no questions asked. He made sure to note in our file not to toss this piece. I'm certainly going to be coming back to these guys. While their last oil service did cause a bit if headache, mistakes happen, and I always forgive and forget, especially when measures are taken to make things right. Employees should spend more time helping customer's standing in line for 5 minutes in full view of two employees, one of which appeared to be a manager, than chatting . I would have settled for a quick "someone will be with you shortly" but instead I stood there wondering if I was invisible. I even blatantly checked the time on my phone twice! Then i realized there was an autozone right across the road. I was able to drive to Autozone with a long red light and complete my purchase in less time than I was standing at the register and the price was exactly the same. I spend A LOT of money annually on automotive equipment and tools and even though my purchase this evening was not a high dollar value the customer service (or more accurately the lack of) has convinced me not to patronize Pep Boys again. I will also be sending a copy of this review to Pep Boys corporate office. read more

I only give it two stars for the retail side. Service! If you like burning money you'll love this place. My daughter brought her 09 Altima in for brakes. I told her she needed rotors and pads. Pep boys told her the same. I told her not to spend more than $450-500. They quoted her just over $750. That about $550 in labor for a two hour job at best. Got them done at State Line Auto down the street in Methuen for $450. read more

So my car just happened to get a flat tire down the street from this place. I have a mercedes AMG. Nothing too exotic. I just happened to drive by...IM IN LUCK, say I. I have run flat tires...I didn't particularly expect that they had them on hand, but it's a TIRE STORE. Shouldn't be too hard to order and then wait. I told them I was ok with leaving my car there if they needed a few days. So yeah, the manager who is supposed to know things says that they don't have run flats with my specs on hand. But then he goes on to say...yeah, I'm probably not going to be able to to help you. "Probably". He wasn't all that interested in helping me out, he was interested in closing his store (I showed up 20 minutes before they closed the place. What good is a tire installation place if they can't help you fix a flat at their location?? A Mercedes isn't exactly an exotic automobile. Why can't he order the part I need and get it in a few days?? Because they are INCOMPETENT, that's why. Idiots. read more

Came in for new tires on 8/1/19. Ben was great!! He explained he worked at a different location, but was in Salem helping out. Ben asked about my driving routine, budget, and any other services I needed done. He offered to discount an alignment to stay within my budget! Turns out I needed work on two ball joints, and couldn't get the alignment done today. Ben gave me an estimate on the repairs I needed done, and let me know how safe it would be to keep driving without them. Excellent customer service, tire replacement was quick and easy. I brought my vehicle in for four new tires and an alignment.  I was called at home and told that one of my front control arms w/ball joints was broken and that it was recommended that I replace both of them for an additional $1,225.  I declined the repair because I have my own mechanic.  I took the vehicle to my mechanic who related that there was nothing wrong with my control arms or ball joints.  He did find that I needed shocks and struts though.  I am glad I did not pay for the unnecessary repair.  I will not be back! read more

I just had work done on my car at the pep boys in Salem New Hampshire and I can say that it was the most pleasant environment not only did they take my car in fast but they did a great job fixing my car. If i could give you guys a ZERO I would!!!!! So I called in two times to get towed since i'm a rewards card holder. Funny thing is i got a call yesterday which i didn't answer but in the VM said how did your tow go? Funny thing is NO ONE SHOWED UP!!!!!!! I had sat in my car for a few hours waiting!!! They were so backed up and short staffed when I arrived up that it took 3 hours just to get the car in the bay, then another 1 and a half hours to get the tires on. The people were courteous... but damn, if you can't keep an appointment, call me and cancel it. read more

Well when they say it's a 30 min oil change what they really mean is that you wait 30 min , while they eat breakfast and chat and then maybe they will do your oil change , I came in at 7:55 am 6 min before they open and I was the first one, they didn't touch my car until 8:45 , and they took their time too .. read more

If I could give zero stars I would. In August, I made an appointment on Thursday for an inspection sticker on Saturday afternoon. Arrived only to have tech tell me they don't have anyone on staff to perform inspections that day. No call ahead, nothing. Frustrated, the tech offers to have someone inspect it on Sunday. I return Sunday afternoon at the scheduled time and AGAIN no call and no one can inspect it. No appointment booked for me and the tech that day has no idea why the guy the day before told me to come back. Fast forward to October. Against my better judgment I book an appointment for an oil change (the dealer is full and I can't get in). I arrive at my scheduled time and AGAIN they tell me there is no one there to handle my oil change. ARE YOU SERIOUS!!!!!! Is this a repair shop or is this a coffee shop. HOW THE HELL DO THEY ACCEPT APPOINTMENTS! WHY DO THEY BOTHER? IS THERE A WORK SCHEDULE? DO THEY NOT THINK TO CALL THEIR CLIENTLE TO GIVE A HEADS UP? Honest to god!! I see others have had the same experience. HEED THE WARNING, go only if you have unlimited time on your hands and don't really need any service completed. You aren't going to get it completed anyway. Oh and to the Pep Boys rep that wants me to call them, are you going to give me a coupon for discounted service I'll never get? Right, thanks but no thanks. read more

This was my go to place for a painless oil and filter change for years. It appears to be under new management.Tried to sell me services and parts I didn't need, claimed it was company policy and New Hampshire law that these things were required. Sitting in the waiting area, water dispenser and coffee machine were not working. After a half hour they told me they couldn't do the oil change because I refused the extra services! Avoid this place, plenty of other businesses in Salem will give you much better service. read more

I went to Pep Boys to get a battery for my car a 2016 Toyota Corolla and they gave me this small battery that's like half the size of the old one. we put it in broke the brackets trying to get it to stay in place. I called them and Talk to the manager. He said nope that's the best battery for my car. I can't believe this , I have that battery in my Corolla. The battery would not stay in place! I had to go to another place and pay $133 more to get the right battery for my car. And now they won't take the old battery back so I wasted $135 with them. They are the worst place to go! Just because I am older does not give them the right to still my money! read more

Worst place ever!!!! I walk in and don't get a greeting, not even a " hold on a moment we will be right with you". The 3 Staff there were awful!! Do not give them service. I spoke up to see what's going on and the staff stood there like a deer in headlights confused as to why I was speaking. I was there for an inspection btw- so I left after the bad customer service and i made my way over to ALESKA AUTO. Where the nice man walked over to me and said hi how can I help you today. I would have given Pep Boys a lower rating, but one was not available. I had a scheduled appointment for an inspection sticker, oil change and balance/rotate the tires. When I got there, I was told there was no inspector to do the inspection, and only one technician with 2 cars ahead of me. There was no effort on their part to reschedule the appointment. Rather Pep Boys feels it's perfectly fine to waste my time. This is disrespectful, and I will never, ever set foot inside a Pep Boys store again. read more

I had to bring my 2012 Toyota in to have a tire air leak diagnosed/rectified. Nick took care of me pronto for free. Within the same week, I had to order a replacement hood strut support for our 2007 Chevy, these guys got in within a couple days and then called up Fri morn to schedule it's install. Showed up at 11:30 am, I was on my way home by roughly 12:15PM. Nick got the job done again at a very reasonable cost. My only complaint is their waiting area could use better accommodations. 3 leather seats with backing and the rest are all stools. Not good. Thanks again Nick for 2 jobs well done. read more

Arrived at 8:55 for my 9:00 appointment. Couldn't even check in until 9:00. The person scheduled was not here. Didn't know when he would be here. Since I really needed this I walked over to I-HOP for breakfast, ate, came back and he was just typing in my information. That was 9:30. Said it would take 20 minutes, it's now 10:23 and I am still sitting here waiting. I will not be coming back, Wal Mart is faster and they don't even offer appointments. read more

Simply disgusted!! My young daughter took her brand new car there for a $35 oil change (conventional oil was good to use) and she had a $10 off coupon. So the bill should have been $25. The coupon also involved a tire rotation. So the manager (Jason) asked her after she gave him the coupon and told him what she wanted, if she wanted the managers special. She assumed that was what the coupon was. So long story short, she was charged $46, she went to give him the coupon and he said you can't use it. Her being young and nervous said okay and left. Well................. He totally took advantage of a young lady and she was reimbursed the $22 he overcharged her. We will never go there again. read more

Brought my F-150 in for a front end alignment, I had made a phone reservation earlier in the day and was promised a certain time, but when I showed up the person who did alignments was on a lunch break. Not a big deal, just had to wait an extra 15-20 mins for him to get back. The actual alignment took over an hour an a half to do (should be a 45 minute job.) This was mildly annoying, but wasn't the main reason I gave them a 1 star review, it's because the alignment was awful. I had an alignment done at another shop a few months before, but just had some front suspension components replaced on my truck that required another alignment, yet the Pep Boys mechanic told me it the truck must have never had an alignment since the factory because the "adjusters were frozen and I had to take a torch to them to get them to move." The truck is relatively new and not rusty underneath, so I was a little alarmed, especially because the mechanic that did the alignment a few months earlier had no such problem. This made me a little skeptical, so when I was paying for the alignment, I asked if I could have the results print out from the job. The tech went out back to grab a print for me, and returned with it in an envelope. On my way home the truck seemed okay on back roads, but on the highway it now pulled severely to the left! Before the repairs and this alignment, the truck would drive in a perfectly straight line with your hands off the wheel, now it won't stay in the lane for more than 3-5 seconds before pulling off into the next lane over. Even unaligned after the repairs, the truck drove much straighter than this. The kicker was that when I got home and went to look at the alignment results print out I had mentioned earlier, it was from an All Wheel Drive Infinity G35... a sports car. I'm really skeptical that they even put any effort into my alignment, and if they did they certainly didn't do it right. I hope I can get time off of work soon to bring it somewhere else to get realigned before the new tires I put on it right before I brought it here get ruined from uneven wear. I will not be returning here for service in the future, and out of principal will probably shop for parts/oil at the new auto parts store across the street from now on. read more

These guys are great! I am from MA just over the boarder of NH and so decided to go for new tires on a whim when they had a deal advertised in order to save on tax and get their special (buy 3 get 1 free) back in November of last yr. The workers were pleasant and helpful in supporting me to chose a tire that was right for my needs rather than up-selling for theirs. The real story that follows is what pushed my conscious to write this review: Because I had a pleasant experience with my tires recently, I decided to call them to replace my car's "fan belt", as my car has recently been making an awful screeching when i start it first thing in the morning and different peers have suggested to me that it "must be the fan belt". Josh, a pleasant man who also accommodated my tire needs and interrogation, answered the phone again and set me up with an apt for the first time I had available (unfortunately for them Friday at 4PM ah). So anyways, I drove up there this Friday and dropped off my 09 Toyota and headed over to eat at a local diner after being quoted about $120 for a fan belt replacement. I rec'd a call from Josh stating that they took my car in and have checked the fan belt, the oil, the power steering etc, and found NO problems! He stated he didn't want to take my money and wanted to be honest that he see's nothing wrong with my car. He then patiently explained the effect cold weather can have on cars etc... I picked my car up, free of charge and drove home with a piece of mind that these guys are HONEST! which goes against most stereotypes of mechanics. I would suggest going here if you are a girl, like me, who could easily be taken advantage of when it come to car diagnostics and recommendations. read more

Made an appointment for a headlight out and possible brakes as they were making a noise. Appointment at 3, got there at 2. The staff was friendly and when I asked to add in an oil change it was no problem. Mike said he would call and let me know about brakes - not even 40 minutes later he called and said I didn't absolutely have to do them but if I did pads now it would say me money from damaging the rotors. He also said my tires needed to be replaced before winter which I knew as I have had the car 2.5 years and they are the originals with 65,900 on them. He went over the options starting with the cheapest. Everything was done in 3.5 hours as promised and when picking it up the staff again was great. Why do I feel like smoking a cigarette after leaving pep boys! First a 2 hour job became a 5 hour job. Got screwed on parts and labor. They gave me the most expensive brakes (Gold) and didn't tell me there were 2 lower priced options. (Shame on me). Then there were the hidden costs etc. Cost me almost $600 for rear brakes. I've been coming to this Pep Boys location over the past couple years for car inspections and routine maintenance. Every time I visit they provide quality service, fair prices, and transparency about the necessary and recommended service. // This past week I brought my car in to have brake pads and rotors replaced, and figured it might also need new wheel bearings. I brought it in first thing in the morning, and they had all of the above mentioned work completed in about 4 hours. Prior to my visit, the worn wheel bearings were increasingly becoming an issue during long drives, but after picking it up, it drove as smooth as butter. It actually felt like I was driving a brand new car. On top of that, the service was friendly and completely transparent. // I 100% recommend this place to anyone in need of simple maintenance or extensive repair. read more

Finally took the tire off and then he decided to talk to another guy. 1/2 hour after tire off and still waiting. 2+hours later. Still waiting!! Would not recommend. So I have been going to Pepboys since the place first opened. Went through many people . I have to say after all these years can someone please tell me why they would give an assist managers job to Nick a 20 yr. old. Who doesn't know what he is doing. Has a not so nice customer service always seems to stressed .You can obviously tell he is not comfortable at what he is doing. It shows in his attitude he can't handle the stress of the front desk. And that he would rather be working out in the bays on cars. Now I'm not saying he should be fired I'm just saying that maybe he should be demoted and put back out in the bays to work on cars where he seems to be more comfortable and relaxed. Every repair shop out there does a good job at repairing vehicles, some better than others. The true meaning of a great repair shop is how they handle themselves when things do not go right the first time. I went to the Salem NH store for shocks, struts and an end to end muffler replacement. I happily got my usual service from them and picked up my Jeep the next day. After I drove it for a few miles, I realized had major issues with the noise coming from the muffler system. I immediately called Jim the manager and explained the situation. He asked me to come in and they would look at it again. When I dropped it off I tried to explain the noise (of course I couldn't duplicate it. It like going to the doctors with a pain and you get there and the pain is gone)This shop would not stop until they identified the issue. They spent countless hours trying to identify the problem. They looked everywhere, from loose hangers to leaks to compromised seals. They took down the muffler system on three separate occasions.(replaced the muffler twice) They ran diagnostics which showed no issues to any part of the exhaust system including the Catalytic Converter, which at that point most shops would tell the customer that they did all they could........ but this shop did not. They finally isolated the problem to small pieces of the honeycomb from my Catalytic Converter that were breaking off and ending up in the muffler. It was too small to be picked up when they ran diagnostics. Throughout the process Jim, Mike, ED, Alex and everyone else in the shop were incredibly professional and helpful. I have never seen a staff more dedicated to making sure "ONE" customer was satisfied. They have earned not only my continued business but also my respect. Nice Job Guys read more

Went to I.H.O.P. in the same plaza and went out to car and had a dead battery. Went in and asked service if they could supply a jumper box and guy said no, we don't do that.(Jump box in plain site) I offered to pay him and just a blank stare at me. So back out to my car with 3 kids. A guy in the parking lot gave me a jump start. Needless to say I did not purchase a battery from them. OH! and Auto Zone is right across the street. Didn't catch the guys name but he was prob mid 40s and short hair. The experience left enough of an impression on me to sign up for Yelp and write this here. Ive been in auto business for along time and would have to say that In my opinion, was not good business. As far as the sales side, i did not go over to them after. Greg the customer service rep escorted me to the section, advised me of choices of quality and price points. Also pointed out that they was a rebate on one of the models. I asked him if he had time to install the blades on my truck ( not that i couldn't do it myself, just seem to break one of the additional parts that come with it) he quickly replied yes. He cashed out my purchase, put on his jacket and effortlessly installed the Wiper blades. In my book that is great service with a smile. read more
