Came in for lunch. Not busy at all. Menu items are decently priced. Didn't feel like breakfast like I usually get at these diner type places and went for a Pattie melt. The Pattie melt was rather disappointing. It was open faced which wasn't the problem but that the burger patty was pretty much a tasteless unseasoned greasy slab of ground meat. Sure it's edible with some ketchup but I definitely wouldn't get it again or a burger for that matter. I'll update this again once I've tried other items. Update 5/14 Came back and had my usually order of 2 eggs over easy with sausage and hash. Price is about right. Overall good breakfast though frankly I feel going to the Summit Diner is better in portion size and taste. However coming here would definitely be better if you had a larger group, wanted to use credit to pay, or I suppose wanted a cleaner ambience. For me though I'd rather go to the Summit Diner whose hash is much tastier. read more

A classically unpretentious New Jersey diner. It is somewhat more of a "restaurant" than the Summit Diner, but you still get a great meal for a small amount of money. My family has been coming to Peppercorn after Mass on Sunday mornings for over a decade and we've never been let down. The service is incredible, the kind you'd expect from a real family-owned and operated business. Definitely the kind of place where you can become a "regular" and get treated well every time you walk through the front door. The food is great. Peppercorn is great for breakfast; all the usual diner favorites at pretty cheap prices. For me, it's hard to beat a breakfast option that offers 2 eggs any style, toast, and plenty of home fries for under $5. The servers are great, very friendly and attentive, and they are on top of those coffee refills. Lunch options here are pretty good too, and they always have tons of specials if you're not a fan of Greek salads or gyros. If you're looking for a quaint, unique-looking diner, this isn't really the place, but Peppercorn is always clean and there's never a problem with the food, which is more than you can say for some other Jersey diners. Super cute place for a relaxed brunch. I ordered chocolate chip pancakes with bacon, and they were very good and the three pancakes were definitely a good enough portion. My boyfriend ordered a Mexican Omelette and although the portions weren't huge, it was just enough. For drinks, I had a hot chocolate with whipped cream which was tasty and he had a coffee which he says was really good. Overall, I would recommend this place and we will be back to try their lunch food. read more

We walked in, saw the empty establishment furnished with old, tired Formica tables and tattered vinyl seats, and almost walked out. So glad we stayed! My Florentine omelette was perfect, moist and flavorful. I added ham and tomatoes to the standard menu item. Homefries were crispy on the outside and tense on the inside as they should be. Bacon perfectly crispy, French toast nicely done. Coffee was strong, smooth, not bitter. Service was attentive without being overbearing, a and everyone was super friendly. Came here after multiple attempts to get in at Prestige and Summit diners. The atmosphere is definitely old time diner, which I happen to like, but also clean and friendly. Seems like a family run place just like the one I grew up in. Another plus is they have wifi. For my first time here I ordered the eggs benedict as I had a craving for them. I asked the waitress if the homes fries were diced, sliced, or shredded. She said sliced. Perfect answer as I hate shredded home fries. Coffee was great, but having to constantly ask for creamer was a pain. The eggs came quickly and perfectly. The home fries - not. They were cold and a mishmash of something, like leftovers. AWESOME little hometown diner in the town of Summit. You walk in and it's a real old-school vibe -- painted rails, small booths, and long. It's really cool, and for stumbling upon this spot randomly with my wife, we loved it... The omelettes are OUTSTANDING, and I don't know what it is. The cheese they use? The eggs from Summit cows? Great Greek salad. Chicken was super moist. My husband always has an omelet with home fries and toast. I think that relative to other diners, the breakfast dishes are "small," but obviously appropriately sized, which is refreshing. The ambiance is not too enticing. Seems outdated, worn, and a bit dirty, but definitely isn't. The place is always packed! Definitely a 5 star lunch at Peppercorn. I ordered from the special menu. A fresh spinach salad with grilled chicken, bacon, mushrooms and onions with olive oil. Fresh and delicious. Cranberry juice. The waitress was friendly and knowledgeable. Definitely will go back when in Summit. read more

oh hell naw with this place. I hadn't been here in years but I heard they renovated a while back so I gave it a shot. HELL NAW The waitress seemed like she was going through some hard times so I tried to be extra nice. I asked her whether the "chicken basket" (I think) was fried chicken (hoping) or chicken tenders. She thought for a few seconds then said she was pretty sure it was chicken tenders. Normally that's where I'd crack a joke or something but I just didn't want to even take a chance at causing drama with this woman who might have something real bad going on in her life. The menu is big like a greek diner but only about a third as big. This place was antiseptic and clean looking inside (used to be the opposite) but I said to myself "don't be a hero today Chee, don't do it" and I ordered something I figured was pretty basic. Asked for open faced turkey, bacon, melted swiss on rye bread. Side of fries. You know when you go to a restaurant and order bacon you want that rippled thick slices of bacon. These were three lifeless strips of bacon that were probably sitting around for 30 minutes, and it was so flavorLESS it might have been turkey bacon. the cheese was ok Here's the big reveal though. There was so little turkey on my open faced sandwich that about 1/3 of the bread on both sides of the sandwich were completely uncovered, leaving just some dry rye bread all over the place. If Chee walks into your restaurant you give him the respect that you would damn well demand for yourself and give him a full sandwich, not a meager attempt at one. Check my record, there are no scathing reviews. I can find the good in most places. This place just don't do it ever. read more

Just had another great lunch here. What a wonderful neighbohood family business of a vanishing breed. The pancakes are superb. Not excessively sweet like most places. Griddle items such as the patty melt are great. Salads are better quality than area diners. Greek salad is recommended. Great prices. A word on the decor-- up until a few years ago the place was a wonderful time machine that took you back to the 70s - then sadly it was redecorated to be a time machine that takes you back to the late 80s. The rickety booths are all just part of the package. Appreciating this does seem paradoxical, but we like what we like. read more

Peppercorns is a great, old-fashioned diner located in the heart of downtown Summit. Went there at around 11am on a Thursday and there was a fair amount of people there. The waiter came right over and was very nice. We ordered our food and it came right out in about 10 minutes. Great service. The food was also delicious. French toast was amazing, eggs were pretty good. Above the good food and great service, the prices are amazingly low. Go to Peppercorns for a great traditional diner meal! read more

So perhaps to the uninitiated, this is a great place - good food, stereotypical decor, and would definitely constitute a real Jersey diner experience. Worked here fulltime as a server in 1989-1990, earning money for grad school. Peppercorn was very old school. Founding owners Gus and Tom could be nasty at times but ultimately they were good-hearted to staff. We brought home delicious pumpkin pies at Thanksgiving and were treated to an extravaganza of Greek delicacies at Christmas. They also arranged a generous going-away party for me when I left for school. The food was basic and nourishing in the best way, everything prepared to order, nothing frozen . And yes, we kept that place CLEAN. I arrived at 5 AM every morning to scrub everything down and prepare for the breakfast rush at 6. It's a long time ago and the menu has changed (hopefully the tips are better, too) but I'm told the vibe is still the same. read more
