Hello my old friend. It's been a loooooong time since I ate here. I used to enjoy this hidden gem in their original location back in the early 80's when I lived in the area. Stopped in on a whim while visiting mom yesterday and I have to say - this place still rocks. A truly unique and refreshing tasting sub thanks to "the guts". I had the corned beef and pastrami sandwich and it was really tasty. Nice chewy bread that holds up nicely and good refreshing flavors. Hands down kicks Subway or Jimmy John's butt any day of the week. Glad to reconnect and will be back. The only disappointment was the homemade chili that mom had - not very good. Well if your from Chicago and want a Chicago Hot Dog. DO NOT GO HERE!!! They brutally destroy it by putting there so called " GUTS" All it is minced up pickle onion and tomatoes. It taste like they used the left over scrap and tossed it on a hot dog. I ordered a Chicago dog and they gave me this and I asked the girl for a Chicago dog not minced veggies on a hot dog. Then the cashier said where not allowed to Make it like a chicago dog even though they have all the ingredients. I offered to pay more and still was declined. Must be Lazy or the owner is cheap... The taste is different , unique, and good, but not Italian. I've never seen mayo on an Italian Sub, and you need more than just Salami and Provolone. Where are the choices among meats and cheeses such as , Capicolla, Mortadella, Superssata,and Prosciutto, or the cheeses like Mozzarella, Asiago or Fontinela. These are the cold cuts that make an Italian Sub, you may have to charge a little more but when it comes to good food. How can you put a price on taste? You guy's have a good thing , you just need to widen the scope. one more thing, just a little more meat & cheese and a little less "guts." Let me start by saying I have been eating Peppo's sandwiches for almost 40 years. I used to lived down the block from the original location on Roberts Road and 105th. I have ordered the same sandwich almost every time. I know it sounds a little boring to order the same thing, but thats how good the #4 was...I emphasize WAS. This review encompasses at least the last 5 times I have ordered. The sandwiches are not the same...the smalls are smaller, the bread is harder, there is not enough juice and today I received a sandwich with lettuce in the guts...filler! The sandwich was dry, perhaps they did not squirt any oil and vinegar on it but again I was disappointed. My co-workers also noticed a difference at both the Palos and Tinley store. When they were still delivering, we called and complained we were so disappointed. Come on Peppos, you can do better...I know. What ever changes you have made in about the last two and a half years, stop! Don't mess with what works. read more

I am from Las Vegas and visited Chicago for the first time in April. My husband grew up in Palos Hills and his dad was a fire fighter across the street from Peppos back in the day. They use to eat their sandwiches religiously. My husband told me I needed to try one if I wanted a taste of good Chicago food. I am the worlds most pickiest eater. And I really thought it would be just another sandwich with maybe better bread. All I have to say is 'oh my gosh do you deliver out of state?' I made my husband take me there two days in a row because I loved it so much. I am craving the guts and now because I am so far away have to resort to trying to replicate it. Which I doubt will ever happen. I guess I just have to pay a 500 dollar ticket to go eat there. THIS PLACE IS AMAZING!!!!! Highly recommend Peppo's to anyone looking for a great sub sandwich. I always get the #15, which has salami, ham, and maybe another meat or two, pepperjack cheese, lettuce and THE GUTS. The guts absolutely make this sub! It is a marinated mix of pickles, tomatoes, and onions and it is delicious. The sandwiches are enormous and the meat and cheese is placed in the bread and the guts are placed on last and the sandwich is wrapped in plastic wrap. The sandwich can definetely get messy, so I do not recommend eating while you are driving. I often will let the sandwich sit in the plastic wrap for a while in the fridge so that the guts/ juice soak into the bread. I moved downtown recently so I am not in the suburbs as often, however, whenever I am in the suburbs, I always get two larges and eat the first, and bring the second one downtown. OMG thats so funny the compliments people have given Peppos. This place, while a very good concept, and very interesting menu, is completely unsanitary and totally disgusting. I went in there the other day and ordered a sandwich. Looked like it was gonna be a good sandwich. Then the girl put the order ticket in the back. I wanted to see what happened so i stayed by the counter and looked back there. All of a sudden some dude came out of the back who was cleaning the floor and putting away boxes. Then, without even washing his hands or putting on plastic gloves, he proceeds to take a bread out and then with his bare hands put different meats in there. ICK! Was totally disgusiting. This guy didnt really look that clean to begin with also. Ratty t-shirt and jeans. THEN, here comes the good part, once he put the meats in the sandwich, he passed the sandwich down the assembly line. Another dude, this time a young man who was also cleaning and organizing in the other part of the back, came over, and once again without washing his hands or putting on plastic gloves, reaches right into the veggies and that special peppos "guts" relish with his filthy hands and starts lining the sandwich with the veggies and special relish. GROSS! I was almost laughing it was so gross. Thats four dirty hands on one sandwich. I started to imagine all the different types and sorts of bacteria and viruses that would soon be swimming in my tummy. Luckily I have a strong stomach because I was in the Army and have eaten in third world countries. Now comes the next part. While the orgy of dirty hands was massaging my sandwich, I gave the girl at the counter my credit card. She was also taking lots of cash from people before me who didnt use a credit card. She slid the card through this filthy machine and started pushing buttons that had a layer of soot and filth on it and some powder or dust of filth all over the buttons. Wasnt the dirtiest ever, but was not washed in a couple weeks to put it conservatively. Very grimy. So after this girl uses this filthy credit card machine and after handling several customers cash, she goes in the back to prepare my side of macaroni salad. No hand washing, nothing. She goes in the back to the fridge, pulls out a big tub, lifts off the top, and starts spooning macaroni into a small container. I thought "Oh great, macaroni salad and dirt, just what I wanted." Dirty Fingers on the macaroni tub, dirty fingers in the macaroni tub, dirty fingers on my macaroni to-go container. Dirty Fingers on the macaroni spoon to ladle it out. All after handling cash which is known to be the dirtiest surface known to man after keyboards and bathroom doorknobs. read more

Best sandwich I have ever had hands down. My parents used to live around there and now we live 30 minutes away so its a special treat, but I've loved it since I was a kid. I get the #3 with american.
