The bartenders here cater to "the regulars"... who apparently run this establishment as opposed to the owner/manager. Apparently one of "the regulars" had a beef with my date last night, and relayed this to the dark haired male bartender wearing an Angel's jersey, who then told the other older bartender, as they proceeded to refuse service to both me and my date. He's lucky I didn't hear him. Real nice professional business model you have going. 2 thumbs up guys, way to go. We took our money and good time to 2nd floor which had a much more welcoming environment and bartenders. Won't ever go back to Perqs again. I first stopped in at Perqs in 1986. Came back in 1996 and been going there since. Went there on and off over the years..... Its a great bar. I really enjoy when I can walk in when its quite, sit at the end of the bar and enjoy a cold tap import. I thought for sure I would be the first to report rudeness and the illegal activity of adding a tip on to a card but I was (semi) shocked to see this wasn't the first time for Perqs! As a seasoned scotch drinker (and former bartender) I know what a proper pour should look like, even if its from an auto-stopped bottle. After receiving one pour by the bartender I politely asked if he could be a bit more generous. At the same time I mentioned I'm a local, knowing that WE are the people who support the downtown establishments throughout ALL seasons. His response was (and this was quoted but edited to get through a possible yelp filter), "Don't be an a__hole!". Tim, the less than wonderful bartender, then proceeded to bring an EVEN LESS FILLED glass over to me and argued that it was 2 ounces. Sure, what he poured for the woman next to me WAS 2 ounces but mine wasn't even 2 sips. BTW, when I say he argued, what i really mean is that he proceeded to call me names that were completely unjust. Obviously I was annoyed so I decided to tell the company I was with that we were going to leave after I paid the bill. I patiently waited while TIM ignored me, as he put on a happy face while talking to 2 women, then when I got his attention I asked for the bill. I have NEVER left a bar/restaurant without tipping but with the attitude I got and terrible service I felt NO reason to leave anything. I even went so far as to tell him that I was leaving nothing then he proceeded to call me a few more names and motioned for the bouncer to escort me out. Upon reading these reviews I decided to look at my bank account and was shocked to see that Tim added a 20% tip to the bill after I left. Isn't that illegal!?!? Basically its stealing money since it was not authorized. Not to mention forging my writing on the receipt. I've filed a claim with my bank but given the legality of this behavior along with multiple occurrences, as pointed out on Yelp, it should be investigated! Will I ever visit that place again? NO Will I ever tell people to go there? NO Will I tell this story to others in town so as they avoid the place as well? GLADLY! Good job Tim and Perqs! You sure do make a good impression! read more

I am surprised that people still visit this place. I was on vacation with my hubby during Christmas and we decided to try this place out. First of all, the music was WAY too loud. I'm down with turning the beats up and having a good time, but the music in this craphole was distorted and eardrum-piercing loud. I'm mildly surprised my eardrums didn't start bleeding from how terrible the sound and sound system were. Second, our bartender (an Asian female, I'll call her Grumpy) was disgustingly arrogant. She was rude, inconsiderate, and lazy. Grumpy was snappy, had a terrible attitude, and took forever with our drinks. The best part about Grumpy? Whilst her whack attitude cost her the tip on the tab, she decided that she would take it upon herself to GIVE herself a tip by entering a different amount than what was charged. Fairly sure that's illegal. As in, against the law. As in, who the hell do you think you are thinking you can treat people so despicably and expect to get away with it? Make sure you check your card statements because the people in this pathetic excuse of an establishment are shady AF and don't seem to care. When I noticed the incorrect "charge", I called up the place the next day and asked for a manager. Grumpy or one of the other maroons who worked there answered and said they did not have a manager and hung up. Really? I tried twice more and got the same answer - we don't have a manager. Right, okay. Don't waste your time here - music sucks, drinks are subpar, the bartender is RUDE, and they FRAUDULENTLY charge your debit/credit card in hopes that you won't check your card statement! We ended our night on Sunday at Perq's... It was my boyfriends bday and we were out with all of his friends and the guys at the door made fun of him because of how much weight he had gained. That made me feel so bad, I could see that they hurt his feelings.. And in front of all of his friends on his birthday!? We all went in and hung out for a bit and my boyfriend left after about 30 minutes, he just walked home.. I won't be coming back here. The guys at the door were pretty mean. I should hate perq's. It was the inland empire of main street in Huntington Beach. This though, was my perception of the place at 17. Recently, perq's served as the backdrop for the rekindling of a fifteen year friendship. Resolution occurred in the company of two dollar pints and a few scattered customers. The beta band, dead kennedys, and some offspring provided the soundtrack as we shared the last decade and a half of our lives. I was impressed and reminiscent at the same time. Perq's was comfortable and conversation-inducing, yet just annoying enough to remind me that I was on Main street in Huntington Beach. I never thought I'd actually set foot in here. To my surprise, Perq's is now more like the valley of Main...or maybe santa monica. Well, maybe not santa monica. I'd rediscover a friendship here anytime! read more

I like this bar. Every time I go it's never packed so I get my drinks fast. Why the 2 stars? The last 3 times I was there I was charged more than what was on my receipt. Which means they over tipped themselves! I always leave cash as a tip AND a pretty good one too!!!! As a fellow bartender, I know you don't have to claim cash tips on you taxes so I never put it when I charge. Plus, if you take care of your bartenders, they will take care of you! That is the way is supposed to work, not at this place. You should never have to worry about being over charged anywhere you go, especially if you are drinking. That's taking advantage of your patrons. This is the first and only place that has ever done that to me in as many years as I've been drinking... What can I say that's nice about Perq's? Perq's a dive. A big fat ever lovin' dive. Dirty floors, wood trim falling off the walls and counter tops not wiped clean. I guess you can't expect much from a place like this because it's the first bar on the West side of Main Street as you leave the beach. I went to Perq's on a Thursday night to see a friend play drums on Jam night. Their stage is just big enough for a 4 piece band, but even then, some of the equipment was stationed in the front on the wood floor. Their sound system was good, but they desperately needed someone proficient on the sound board. As there was no cover charge, I just walked in, I found an open bar stool and planted myself there for the evening. Nobody bothered me. Not security, not the one waitress/bartender, not the drunk patrons, nobody. I ended up chatting with the lead guitarist's wife of the band I was there to see and a fan of a band who was going on after between sets. Besides me, at least the senior beach bum wearing a hoodie with a top hat over it seemed to enjoy the entertainment. read more

Nice place to have a drink and watch a band BUT ................................. No manager is on the premisis, so they claim, so if you have a problem the bar tender and security seem to be the ones to figure it out but not agree and cant get anything resolved. Tables are cramped and wobbly , they sit loose in the main walk way and every drunk that walks by if your not at your table knocks your drink over and keeps walking. Ohh be prepared to buy another a few times that way ( they wont replace it) No waitreses or cocktail staff your on your own to get your drink. Bartenders are slow - and if your not sitting at the bar and thier friend or customer direct they serve you when they get around to it. Security is a bit over bearing about what they do, as well as rude !!!_ they have on bullet proof vests and think they are the secret service or FBI rather than just checking ID and if a problem just stepping in and resolving it . there is a huge, fat security guy that i noticed was rude to guests on many occasions , as well as when the bathroon issue was brought up he said " those crazy bitches are such slobs and always do that to bathrooms, they can go pee somewhere else " wow !!!! hard to imagine a beer drinking bar and the women cant pee !! security does step in as clean up and maintence saw them mop a few floors. from the spilled drinks due to drunks knocking em over at the tables as they walked. Womans bathroom was broken and from the bartender it has been a few days with no posted note or repair in process! can you say Health dept!!! bartenders tells us have the women ue the mens room ?? then security says no way it is not allowed !! what a mess . They dont validate parking so have 15 dollars to be able to park in a garage in Huntington Beach its far away and expensive to park in that area read more

The last stop of the bar crawl was Perq's. It was independent/punk rocker night complete with live band (Die Raver). This is totally not my cup of tea, but I think Noi was diggin' the music. -Not that there's anything wrong with that. Diversity is the key to a good life. The redeeming quality of this place is that the bar was not busy so getting drinks was ridiculously easy. Getting hit on was not. I'm very traditional in all aspects of dating and I always feel uncomfortable when girls approach me. That's the guys role; just be patient : ) Anyway, we only stayed for 15 minutes. Went to check out karaoke on a Thursday night. 4 of us sat down at empty bar stools, trying to decide what to drink we were approached by an unfriendly bar tender. As a bar tender, its your job to make the first good impression and make guests feel welcome. Ordered drinks and was sitting there drinking our beers...As a bar tender, do not have stools at your well...there we were and she told us to move away from her well. Really? You know those places where the over inflated meathead-type at the front obviously takes his position way too seriously? The kind "doorman" that uses his little stool and flashlight to boost his ego... This is one of those places. Location is great, front door staff: not so much. After a full weekend of work in the area, my business partner and I were happy to find an atmosphere in downtown HB that let us unwind... We had good experiences at both Hurricane and Beer Co over the weekend and would recommend either of those places to a friend. I will not be returning to Perqs and if the assh*le that was hired to work the door (1/9/16 - 1/10/16 around midnight) is any indication of how the rest of the staff treats customers, I'm happy we spent our money elsewhere. read more

The closest thing that Main Street in HB has to a dive bar. I've been to Perq's on numerous occasions and have always had a good time. Drinks are moderately priced, the music is good, and the ambiance is a little different that other Main Street watering holes. They'll let you know if they want your business, and they don't mind showing the "riff raff" the door. Bartenders are all great, never had a bad experience here. I will say this though, it's definitely not for everybody. Dig on the memorial to the Golden Bear Theatre on the wall opposite the bar, really cool. read more

I laugh at the people who come to this bar on vacation, or are not from around here: Pro tip vacationers, this is not the place for you. It's one of the few remaining places left on main street that isn't fru fru tourist. It's a dive bar, there's no getting around it. IT's got live music, and the regulars are a little rough around the edges, that's why it's great. It has a lot of heart. Let me get this out the way, the only reason why this place is getting another star is because of the drink prices, it's CHEAP! I would come back here for the drink price or if there's another bartender which is causing me to give this place 3 stars. First things first, first impression should always be the main thing once walking into any place. Called the place to ask where they're located, the lady who picked up the phone was rude. Walked into the place and there was only 1 bartender working (a female), so I'm assuming she's the one who answered the phone. The bartender with tattoo in her right arm got my drink right away which kinda makes up for her rudeness I guess. But as I sat there and try to get a feel for the place, I noticed that customers drinks were empty people were trying to have a conversation with her and she's not paying attention to anyone but the phone in her hand and whoever is on the other side of the phone. Oh Perq's, where do I begin? This is a fabulous bar to go any time of year, but be prepared to pay a $5 cover, unless you have a big group of girls and then you can try to negotiate. It is a wonderful place to get away from all the bros that flock to downtown HB during the summer, and in the winter it's a wonderful place to grab a casual drink after a date on Main Street. Perq's generally attracts an older crowd than say, Sharkeez. To me it is a welcome change of pace and attitude. No dress code, stiff drinks, live classic rock music, and a dance floor. Perq's is one of those bars that has been around forever and you kinda get that idea when you first walk in. This may turn some people off, but for me, I really don't mind it. This place is pretty popular for the older crowd so if you're young (21-28) this might not be the best place for you. I'm not bothered when I come here, the service isn't bad, and drink prices aren't out of this world. It's also a good place to watch a game and if you're like me who always need to be munching on something, you can buy a bag of peanuts here for $3. I'm a North West Native. When I was relocated down to Huntington Beach for business in August, I was in search of a good "local bar." The kind of bar you seem to find on every other street corner in Seattle. From Fremont to Burien and West Seattle to Ravenna, it seems that there is atleast a few bars in every neighborhood that feel like they were taken straight out of an episode of "Cheers". With that being said, I have been hard-pressed to find a local spot with the same "culture." It seems that every bar is infested with the kind of douche bags you'll find on the reject list of a Jersey Shore casting call. I'm a young professional with an affinity for live rock music and cheap beer by the pitcher. I don't do the whole Real World wannabe scene. Perq's may not be a Skylark Cafe or a Kells, but with their happy hour Wednesday's, friendly service, and the general uncrowdedness (no, that's not a real word, but you get the point), it comes close enough. read more

Sunday Funday and after a quick shopping excursion on Main St. with the bf, we hopped on in here so he could watch the game and grab a bloody Mary. This little spot is pretty chill and the regulars seemed pretty down to earth and friendly. Soon, the 2 of us were grooving to some tunes on the juke box, eating some pretty yummy hot dogs, and making new friends. It was pretty ideal after a long weekend. Considering the nearby Gallagher's Bears bar was too packed to take in more fans, we ended up coming to Perqs. It's a lot less crowded, with multiple games on, great location, good dive bar personality. Nothing special. If you're into people watching and not so into sports you can always sit at the front at the window. Can't speak to the food but if you want any ask. They don't have menus or food specials around. Hmmm, this place is sort of weird. Drinks aren't too pricey which is always a plus. Here's my experience: 1. 15 year old Cholos walk in with a can of Budwieser. Bartender comes out from the bar, confinscates the beer and kicks the teens out. Cholos spit on bartender and threaten him with a fake kinfe. Cops show up down the street and haul off half of the little punks. 2. Internet juke box happily accepts our money and we stage our own karaoke dance party on the empty stage. 3. I love the reggae Sundays, the location, the old building, the strong drinks, and the punk rockabilly bartender who makes good drinks and is always there. I'm thirsty for a beer just thinking about it! Really love this historic old building! So glad it's still there! It was built in 1905! This is the oldest bar in Huntington Beach (at least the oldest building a bar is in) it used to be a brothel too! Amen to this awesome place and may it last for hundreds of years more! San Diego reviewer here - this is a nice chill place for a beer. I came here to watch the UEFA soccer championship. There is a bar area with two TVs and also a third TV on the opposite wall. It looks like there are nicer places to go to near Sharkeez but maybe it gets crowded near there on the weekends. The bathroom was run down more than I expected. I noticed there is a small 12x12 feet-ish wooden dance floor but they probably use it for live music/bands. I suppose I could have also given 3 stars but the bartender was talking soccer and was very friendly - good attitude from this place's staff. read more
