Was our first time at Persimmon. The hostess was very friendly and helpful. She was constantly seating new tables and bringing them drinks orders. We sat in the walled off area near the kitchen which was great to watch. They were definitely busy pushing food out the entire time we were there and after leaving. The place was super busy and loud. The bar tenders were friendly and helpful too. Our server was ok overall. he seemed exasperated and tired. He was busy with most of the tables in our area. He spent some time with us when we first arrived, talking about the size of the plates and that it would be about 2-3 plates per person because of the size. After describing portion sizes he said "that's all I've got" seemingly exhausted. When he saw we sat down with drinks from the bar he said "that's usually my job" which was weird. I did like his wine suggestions. About portion size, I think the average guy would need about 3 plates. minimum. Our orders were good but very small, think appetizer size. We had the grilled delicata squash, the chestnut pasta which was a bit sweet for our liking and I had the (bay) scallops which were good. My partner had the chicken which she loved but was again, half a chicken breast with small pieces of potato and parsnips. Near the beginning of our meal, a group of 2 couples came in and sat near us. The one female in the group must've been really tired because she lay down on the bench and went to sleep during her meal. It was bizarre and distracting because I kept expecting her to roll off the bench or something. They must've been regulars because no one commented on it. They just continued ordering food and drinks and having a great time. For dessert we had the gluten free banana cake and hazelnut cheesecake. Both were good. When we left, the woman was still sleeping on the bench, which was amazing. It was not a quiet place to take a nap! Overall the food was good. The portions are very small but you can tell the ingredients are well thought out, local and fresh. I'm not sure what a restaurant should do about 1 woman sleeping at the table in a small intimate area with other tables near by. It felt like I was at IHop at 3am. Unfortunate distraction for a nice restaurant. Maybe they need more servers so that they don't come across so overworked? Perhaps they need to lower the prices for the size of the orders and for the very relaxed ambience? Slightly disappointed, was hoping for a better experience at Persimmon. The food was amazing! Our party of four shared fresh oysters and deviled eggs; both fresh and delicious. We each ordered a different entree and the two pasta dishes were excellent . The Haddock was good and the duck delicious. The service was excellent, attentive and fun. We sat at chef's counter and it was fun and interesting to watch them at work. It truly pains me to write this review. I took my beau for PVD restaurant weeks about two weeks ago. I have been here several times and have always LOVED it, it is a "go to" for special night or occasion. The service is usually amazing (however, sadly it was not during this visit), the food is usually so and the atmosphere is fun and hip. I'm not sure what happened on this particular evening, though. We were sat pretty close to our reservation time. We took a few minutes to decide on our drinks but the busboys and gals came by to re-fill our waters almost as soon as the glasses left our lips. It was great because this was one of those REALLY hot days, so much so that I had a bit of headache from dehydration, simply because it was such a crazily warm summer day. I did, however, decide on a cocktail, which was pretty tasty. We ordered the prix fixe menu in short order, and our first course came relatively quickly. It was "okay"; neither of us was wowed, but I did not want to "let on" my disappointment, because it was his first time here. Then we waited. And waited. And waited some more. No one stopped by with bread, or amuse-bouche (as I have often received here) or to check in, to say, sorry for the delay or to say anything for that matter. The only ones who kept coming were the busboys with water. I kept waiting. Perhaps I should have gotten someone's attention, but I was getting irritated and again, my boyfriend had never been, and I wanted him to enjoy it. Maybe I can give the benefit of the doubt. It was a Saturday evening, but not all the tables were full. In fact, another table sat down nearby quite a while after we had. Eventually, after some time, we received our entrees. The other table that arrived much later received theirs within moments of ours (it appeared they were also doing the PVD RW) very soon after us. However, I believe it was 55 minutes from the time we sat until we received our entrée. If we mulled over the menu for 20 minutes, fine. But, we were hungry. We decided and ordered, lick-ity split. Then, sadly, we were both disappointed with our meals. They were not very flavorful. All that time waiting, to feel dissatisfied... I decided to order an off-the-menu desert, expecting a slight up-charge, as I had mentioned when ordering (even though both the RW menu and regular menu deserts were the same price). I was also disappointed in the desert. I did not love it (really did not like it even) and paid the full price and was not asked if I would like the one that was included, since it should have come with my meal. Overall, I was disappointed in the slowness of the service and the lack of acknowledgement of it. I complimented the servers when we arrived at their "on the ball-ness" regarding never letting our water glasses get nearly empty. That was the only highlight of our $120+ dinner that night. Fell a bit short on what my expectations were. I so wanted to like this place after reading all the rave reviews but it was just ok. We didn't make a reservation thinking for a 5:30 walk in, we would be ok since they open at 5pm, boy was I wrong! We were told there were no tables available at all, but that we could sit at the bar. We were lucky enough to find 3 seats at the bar. Our bartender/server for the visit was very friendly and attentive, so I have to give her a star for that. What bothered me was that when we left the place 2 hours later, the same 3-4 empty tables still remained completely empty. Come on now, and we couldn't get a table when literally there were empty tables staring at us the entire time!? On to the food, 2 of us knew going this was a small plates/tapas type restaurant, my other friend sadly didn't know. We ordered drinks and 5 plates to share. We got the boneless chicken wing, the campanelle, the seabass, the lobster risotto and the tempura soft shell crab. Flavors were ok, but as others have said - portions are tiny in comparison to what you pay for. The only dish I really liked was the campanelle - nice rich flavor with fresh veggies. Wished the skin on the sea bass was crispy. They do serve a nice crusty bread with butter - load up on the bread to fill your belly. =) Nothing was bad but tiny portions at high prices and you leave feeling hungry b/c you don't want to have to shell out another $100 on drinks and small plates. Great dining experience including food, drinks and service. Slightly pricey but well worth it if celebrating a special occasion. Initially I was under the impression there is only a tasting menu but later found out that you can order a la carte as well. Bartenders were great. Got the mexican firing squad which was perfectly made. Not too strong, refreshing and good to sip on. They have other drinks as well and wine pairing for the tasting menu as well. For food, got the tempura squash blossoms which is probably the best thing i had all night. Total surprise, the filling was delicious, definitely recommend getting it if its on the menu. Also got the striped bass which was pretty good. And got the deviled eggs with trout roe. It was my first time trying roe. It has a unique taste to it. Overall good experience. Again you should know what you're coming in for. The portion sizes are small, it is slightly pricey and you may have to go home for a second dinner but the food is good. Spent around 50$ for all that food and a drink. The tasting menu according to me is slightly expensive for 75$ even though there are five courses and apparently it is a surprise which i think is good and bad because not everybody eats everything and there should be a choice to change it if that's the case. I love Persimmon. It's easily one of the best restaurants in the state, and that would be accurate if it were in any state. I hadn't been to the restaurant since it was in Bristol, and I think it's even better now. Great food, excellent service, beautiful space, and all of this is done in a down-to-earth, unpretentious manner. Last week we had a superb meal, starting with a couple of small plates - the deviled eggs and oysters. The eggs were done with smoked trout mousse and trout roe, and the oysters were local RI, fresh and perfect. Then we had the tempura soft-shell crab, and black spaghetti with bottarga di muggine (dried fish compressed and grated over the pasta). The crab was unexpectedly beautiful and just delicious. Best I've ever had by a mile. Her pasta was fantastic and I only got to have one bite as she wasn't willing to share more than that. I don't blame her. As these are all 'small' plates, we weren't done yet. Our next course was the filet mignon for me, and duck confit and foie gras for her. Outstanding, both dishes. My filet was perfect - med rare, juicy and seasoned expertly. The duck and foie gras were incredible too. Everything was plated beautifully, with Chef Champe giving all dishes a final look at the pass just a few feet away from our table. At last we came to dessert. Again, small plates and careful, appropriate portions left us room to enjoy this last course of the night. We had the Fourme d'Ambert (cheese) with warm pastry, and the pavlova. Again, just amazing. I added photos of everything, except the eggs and oysters which I forgot to photo. If you're looking for an exceptional meal, this is a great choice. In a city where "fine dining" almost always means Italian Persimmon's Champe and Lisa Speidel offer a rare alternative to Birch, the space in Fox Point visited days after Christmas found serving a seasonal array of plates built on quality ingredients and classic technique. Described as "New American," but built on global influence, an address at 99 Hope Street occupied since 2016 after several years in Bristol, it is passing by pictures of the namesake Fruit that guests find themselves in one of two rooms, a well-stocked Bar the focal point of one while an open kitchen can be seen from the other. Dimly let and small in staff, only two waiters noted despite at least fifty diners spread across the Restaurant, it was after ordering drinks including viscous Hot Buttered Rum that the server began to make suggestions, house-fabricated Pasta an easy sell to this four-top but Dinner actually beginning with a bowl of Soup made from pureed Butternut Squash plus smoked Syrup, Nuts and Seeds. A bit confused by the choice to serve over-proofed Sourdough, the flavor fine but Crust hard and virtually no body, it is fortunate that three bowls of Noodles came from a more subtle hand, the Bucatini not over-salted like so many others while both standard Spaghetti and one made with Squid Ink were al dente and complicated, the former undoubtedly incorporating some Offal into the Bolognese while shaved Bottarga added a creamy finish to the black Strands that were not too hot despite the inclusion of Chili Flakes. Moving onward, the waiter's awkward manners giving way to a little personality as he realized this was a knowledgeable group wanting to talk Food, it was at prices far lower than Boston or New York that Foie Gras and Venison were offered, the latter a marvelous piece of Meat allowed to display its full flavor profile alongside sweet and earthy accoutrements while Duck Liver was nicely seared and expectedly rich, as too was the fatty neck and smoked Gizzard that went well with locally harvested Fruits. Underwhelmed by the Thai-inspired Chicken "Wing," which was in reality a Roulade wrapped in crispy skin that found itself lost to too many Herbs, it was after a second round of Cocktails that Desserts arrived, the Profiteroles' Choux unfortunately not standing up to Ice Cream and Compote but the rest all enjoyable with special mention warranted for Ricotta Ice Cream that used thinly sliced Celery imbued with Simple Syrup as a counterpoint to reduced Grapes and a sugary Blondie. read more

The waitress told us that the portion sizes are small so we should order multiple dishes per person, but except for gnocchi, I personally didn't think the portion sizes were too small! (definitely not filling though) But, again, looking at other dishes they serve, it really depends on what you order. I really cannot choose what my favorite one was out of all four dishes I had because they all blew my mind away! To begin with, I LOVED their bread that they gave us before our main dishes were served. It was so good that we had to ask for another one haha The main dishes were phenomenal as well! The halibut was so thick, juicy, and clean that I'm not lying when I say that this was the best halibut I've ever had in my life! The pan seared PA duck breast also blew my mind away! It was very crispy on the outside and soft on the inside! For dessert, we ordered pumpkin pie and it was so warm and it blended perfectly with ricotta ice cream and toasted pepitas (I wasn't really a fan of their gnocchi, but everyone has different taste so you might love it!) *** Also, one thing I really loved about this place was that the food was not too salty nor too sweet. We took a large-ish group here: it started out as as reservation for 6, ended up arriving with 7, and we were accommodated, no problem, 5 stars for this ! Throughout our meal the service remained flawless. All members of the staff were attentive and gracious. Most of our party were very pleased with the food. Some things were insanely delicious, like the asparagus with hollandaise, the Bolognese and the Striploin. Some things were less memorable, like the Salmon Tartare. In all instances the presentation was thoughtfully conceived, carefully executed and very lovely. We probably should *not* have brought our elderly relatives from OOT with us to dine at Persimmon. When it comes to restaurants, their idea of top-notch excellence is white tablecloths, dim lighting, heavy upholstery and LARGE portions. We did not know in advance, but at Persimmon there are no tablecloths, bright-ish lighting (at least in our seating area) the chairs have no upholstery (tables along the walls have soft seat benches on one side) and portions are on the smaller side (which I personally find to be perfect.) Persimmon was crowded and noisy the night we were there. We all struggled to hear the server as well as each other at times, but our elderly relatives with their age related hearing issues were particularly vexed by the loud atmosphere. It's easy to see why Persimmon has received such high critical acclaim over the years. If this restaurant were located in Boston, it'd be 3x the price and 10x harder to land a reservation. The chef's counter was a great experience, watching all the prep and plating being executed. The star of the show was the pan seared foie gras, which came with a wonderful accompaniment of duck neck confit, jus, gizzard, and rhubarb. The flavors were deep and rich, clearly the jus was developed over a few hours, and the rhubarb lent an acidic break to cut the fattiness. One of the many amuse bouche offerings was a truffle arancini type thingy-do. I don't know how else to categorize it, but I could've eaten a duffle bag full of them. This is my boyfriend's favorite restaurant and so we decided to come here to celebrate our first year anniversary. Sadly during COVID, they aren't doing their tasting menu so we ended up ordering off the menu and asking for wine recommendations. We were also able to sit outside and had a nice heat lamp to our backs, which kept us warm. We ended up splitting: -Tempura squash: 5/5. The tempura was a perfect texture and complemented the delicate squash. It also came out piping hot, which was perfect for fried foods. We had this with the sparkling wine - a perfect pairing. -Gluten-free gnocchi: 3.5/5. I wasn't a huge fan of this dish though it was well executed. The gluten-free part meant the gnocchi lacked the bit of chewiness I usually enjoy. The flavors were very earthy - mushroom and kale - which my boyfriend enjoyed but I'm less a fan of. -Pan-seared duck breast with rilette: 5/5. OMG. This dish was mind blowing. The duck was so well cooked - the skin perfectly crispy and the meat so juicy and tender. The presentation was also beautiful with the rilette wrapped in a spherical ball. It also went very well with the Pinot Noir. -Tautog in tomato broth: 3/5. I think this dish was also well-made, just less our thing. Tautog is a white fish with an almost lobster-like texture and taste. We found the dish a bit too fishy for us. -Dark chocolate and orange mousse with soft chocolate cake: 5/5. The presentation of this dessert was amazing and the textures were great! The mousse was wrapped with a thin crispy layer, so cutting your fork edge into the dessert led to a bit of crispy, creamy, and soft all at the same time. It wasn't overly sweet either, and paired well with the madera dessert wine. Bonus points: -We both got small hunks of their freshly made bread soaked in olive oil and it was so so good that we asked for another. :) -The waiter shared that his favorite dessert was the one with blue cheese and braised pear cake. Since both my boyfriend and I are a bit blue cheese averse, we asked if we could sample some and the chef graciously cut us a piece we could try. -Service was overall extremely friendly and helpful. Went there for Restaurant week to check out the menu. Three of us for dinner...two got the Rest Week menu, I got two items from the regular menu. Here's my review: - I got the Oysters three ways; fried, raw and 'chips' ....each one of them was probably only 1 oz, they were good, but nothing spectacular. - I then tried the Octopus small plate and it was good....nicely marinated, not chewy, very well done....small small plate though. - My BF got the pork tenderloin entree from the RW menu and there were 4 items on the plate, each about 2 oz big....all of them were good, not memorable, but good. - Our friend Bob got the vegetable lasagna and he liked it. - For dessert we shared the panna cotta and the fruit tart. The panna cotta was wonderful....the best thing I had during the entire dining experience. The waiter service was impeccable ! Excellent ! Excellent ! "Everything is prepared with love." With these words, the server at Persimmon proudly introduced the menu to us--it consists entirely of small plates in several different categories--vegetables, meat, pasta/grains, and seafood. The quality of ingredients at this restaurant was definitely above average, and the execution was creative. While many of the dishes were definite hits, some could probably have used additional enhancements in flavor, but overall, this was a great restaurant to visit in Providence for a great dining experience! After starting with some crusty, custardy bread from a local bakery, our meal was divided up into four courses. We started with the vegetables--the radish salad came with radish kimchee, shaved radishes, and little dollops of avocado and crème fraiche; while interesting, this dish wasn't particularly balanced in its flavors (the kimchi was overly sour and fibrous). The beet salad with celery leaves, almonds, and yogurt contained a delicious combination of sweet, tender beets, and the braised greens "beignets" were warm fritters containing a filing of greens and dressed with a scallion aioli. While the concepts and plating for all the veggie dishes were intriguing, I think the flavors could definitely have been more refined. Next, we had the rock shrimp tempura, which was dressed lightly in a mayonnaise-gochujang sauce (a take on walnut prawns?). The shrimps were so crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, though I didn't find that the sauce added much in terms of flavor. The braised and smoked octopus was a generous portion of tender octopus, but it was completely overpowered by the brininess of the olives in the dish, and it was hard to taste much else. The best dishes we tried here were definitely the pastas--this is the thing to come for at Persimmon! The carbonara rigatoni with egg yolk and cheese was not as heavy as many other carbonaras--the pasta was perfectly al dente and had just the right amount of sauce and smokiness from the bacon. The black spaghetti was tossed with a simple mixture of parsley, almond, bread crumb, and chili flake and had a deep, savory flavor and perfect texture. The favorite of the table was probably the campanelle pasta in a creamy mushroom sauce, and tossed with asparagus and broccolini--the umami flavors in this dish were incredible, and the sauce was perfect for dipping with bread. Finally, for our last course, we had the beautifully flaky black bass--the fish itself was delicious and had a crispy skin, and it was served with a delicious leek raviolo and fennel in a butter sauce. However, the portion was rather tiny and there definitely was not a lot of fish for sharing. We also had the ME lamb prepared three ways--the lamb loin was nice and juicy, the lamb belly was fatty and tender, and my favorite was perhaps the rillets, which were crispy and salty--everything was drizzled over with lamb jus, and the parsnip puree and spinach made for nice accompaniments! Overall, some of the dishes here were particularly memorable (especially the pastas), and though all of the dishes were creative and of high quality, some of the flavor profiles were a little bit lacking or imbalanced. The "coursed" format of the dinner progressed a little bit slower than I had hoped, and the prices are certainly steep for the small portions you get. While I wouldn't be in a rush to come back, this was a great dining experience with absolutely fantastic service. read more

Such a hidden gem and better than your average neighborhood eatery! Sometimes the service can be slow, but the ambiance and food makes up for it imo. The black spaghetti is my absolute favorite, creamy and chewy without being too heavy. The bottarga di muggin makes everything extra flavorful! The soft shell crab also stands out with its crispy crunch exterior and rich sauce, better than some I've had in Japanese restaurants. Lastly, the pan seared duck breast is incredibly tender and juicy on the inside, and crispy and slightly sweet on the outside. Well this is the second time I have dined here and it was just as good as the first. What I like most about Persimmon is it's very understated for such a fabulous restaurant. Staff is attentive but not intrusive. The food is creative and beautifully plated. I had a wonderful bran IMO with shrimp and back in spaghetti with a touch of chili and bread crumbs. Amazing experience w both the food and the service! The menu at persimmon changes weekly so you know the chef is always using fresh and in season ingredients. The majority of the plates are small so they recommend ordering a bunch and sharing which was definitely the right way to do it so you can try the most things on the menu! Highlights of the eight dishes we shared between the 3 of us were the green bean beignets which kind of just tasted like Mac and cheese bites but nonetheless were very good. I also loved the deviled eggs and the fritters but you really can't go wrong with anything here! 10/10 read more

Yum yum yum! I forget about this place sometimes because they aren't on open table but their food is so delicious. I have not had a bad meal here. Most of the plates are small and are for sharing multiple plates. Keep in mind that their menu may never be the same due to the seasonal nature of their menu which is also good! I think the food is inventive and fresh tasting. On my recent visit, the "boneless Thai chicken wing" was AMAZING! Went here for dinner this week. The menu has a many unique offerings you will not find in any other restaurant - while also having some standards. Everything was delicious. We had several appetizers/small plates, each of us had a dinner selection and each had a desert. We also had great cocktails and enjoyed port with our dessert! I love this place!! Their food is incredibly savory and the ambiance is great. They have lots of tasting plates that you can share with your table. The staff is also very friendly and accommodating. Come here with a date for a romantic night! Will definitely be coming here again. read more

I highly recommend this restaurant. We did the 5 course tasting menu and the food was out of this world. The veal was so good that it literally melted in my mouth. The food was simply not that good. Portions were incredibly small. One and done. Our server Bob did a great job.

In a word: amazing. It is so refreshing to sit down at a place with a beautiful, laid back atmosphere and feel that if I were to close my eyes and point at the menu any thing that comes to my table will be excellent. My waiter, "Just Bob," was fun and funny, attentive, and provided an absolutely perfect wine pairing for my meal. Try anything. Seriously. Just do it. I kept thinking that if this was my last meal, I would have been perfectly content. I can't wait to revisit this restaurant next time I'm in providence.
