What fell apart was when we were seated with menus in front of us. I really enjoy pestle rock! Every dish I've tried is jam packed with flavor and the staff are so lovely. Ate here during the pandemic only as takeout but I finally had a chance this past weekend to dine-in for dinner (their takeout does very well on the travel back home and still maintains its tastiness). We had a vegan dining companion in the group and the staff were super accommodating making sure dairy wasn't in any of the cocktails. We all opted for the spiked Thai tea (pestle rock iced tea) and it was absolute perfection! I split the khao soi and ba mee hang muutoon and would say khao soi was the favorite of the two. Didn't think the "wide noodle" used in the ba mee dish was truly wide, more like a regular egg noodle size - nevertheless, it was still tasty but wished that there was little more pork belly bites. Pestle rock is definitely a neighborhood staple and there are several Thai spots on along the same street but pestle rock is definitely worth checking out! read more

Have lived in Ballard for 3 years and this was my first time checking this place out after craving Thai for too long since Jahn Jae closed. After reviewing the menu and reading reviews was super excited to try it. Was not disappointed however, I do look forward to visiting again to try more dishes and see what I think further. I was very skeptical to try this place as my friend said their food was pretty spicy. However, this place has been on my list for a while so o decided it was worth a shot. The place was pretty busy for dinner. There were people also ordering Togo. I love the atmosphere of this place, it's more likely and hipster compare to other Thai places. We decided to order the chicken wings as well as the noodle with the pork belly dish. The difference between this place and most places is that they don't let you decide the spice level, it's already determined for you, so the spiciest thing they have is 3 chilli peppers sign. The noodle dish was 2 signs and it was pretty spicy. It wasn't enough for me so o asked for the spice rack. The food came out pretty quick considering how busy the place is. The food here is very flavorful. The chicken dish had a nice subtle crunch to it and it was freshly made. It's not fried chicken, but it's really good. The noodle dish was probably my favorite. The flavor and the use of the noodle was good. It's not the typical egg noodle. The pork belly was very tender. The stuff here is on the sweeter side. Food is mainly Northern Thai so you wont see your typical Pad Thai dishes you see at all the other places. Located in Ballard off Market St, same owners as Sen Noodle Bar next door, the food over there is real good too, so whichever one you choose, it will be a wise decision. Nice greetings as we arrived, we got seated into a nice booth, they explained a few specials they had on the board, took our drink orders and gave us time to check out the menu. Everything looked so good and we didn't know what to get so we just went with our gut (literally & figuratively) and chose 3 dishes. Yum Larb Isan: Damn right it was "Yum"! I love larb and I had to try this dish and it definitely did not disappoint. Super flavorful, I mean super flavorful....a little spicy, sour, sweet, salty, fresh, refreshing and all that. You can get ground/minced up pork or chicken, has red onions, basil, mint, chilis, some crunchy rice bits, served with some lettuce to make a little wrap. Get this!!! Kao Soi: This is another northern Thai dish I love and they make a pretty mean one! Curry soup was very flavorful, egg noodles were real tasty, nice chunks of chicken and a crispy noodle topper was delightful. Kao Phad Phu: (Crab fried rice) This was very good too, stir fried off the wok, you know that flavor you taste when it comes off the hot wok, yea that's what I tasted. It was very good! Ample amount of dungeoness crab chunks, no imitation krab used. Simple yet delicious! I started with a strawberry & lychee mojito, best mojito I've had to date WTF. (And I've had many!) so fresh, tasted like freshly squeezed strawberries and the lychee on top was the perfect addition. Fresh and packed a punch. For my appetizer, I ordered a papaya salad. First, THANK you for the gluten free option. I've been bummed about not being able to enjoy Som Tum bc of the the added fish sauces, but this one was just as delicious! My entree was Gang Gae + veggies and the lamb was to die for. I've had many massaman curies, but the lamb was extremely impressive. Tender, juicy and the perfect protein for this curry. I truly enjoyed my meal from start to finish. Interior was so cute, loved the hanging lights and the blue hue throughout. If I could give have stars, I would dock half a star for a tiny service issue: I felt rushed. I came in by myself around 8:30pm on a Friday night and it felt like servers rushed to take my order and rushed to grab the menus to get things moving quickly. So many of my friends recommend Pestle Rock. I finally had a chance to try their cuisine. I ordered their sai ua (homemade thai sausage), guay tiow tom yum, and ba mee hang muutoon. When I was there, they were busy but the food still came out relatively fast. The sai ua has too spicy for me and sort of hard to taste other seasoning/ingredients in the dish. I really enjoyed the pickled vegetables that came with the dish. Guay tiow tom yum smelled very strong of fish sauce, which I was worried that it may be too salty. However, not at all! The dish was delicious that all the ingredients were great blend with each other. It was a bit too spicy for me but at the same time, I couldn't stop eating because the flavor was amazing. I really enjoyed muutoon noodle dish as the pork was so tendered and it wasn't fatty at all as it listed pork belly. This is different from traditional Thai restaurants with primary focus on pad thai and curry dishes. Personally, it adds an unique twist to the Thai cuisine that I'm familiar with and more authentic. Plus--Bathroom had a changing station for infants and babies! 3.5 stars--rounded up because I can't judge the authenticity/quality of the flavors because I don't have much comparison for what these dishes and this regional cuisine typically taste like. Subjectively, however, I was not super impressed with the taste overall. The quality of meat and ingredients seemed good (meat advertised as all natural). Portion sizes were small. They recommend sharing dishes, but between 5 of us, some dishes had less than that amount of meat to evenly distribute (I.e. 3 pieces of shrimp, 4 pieces of pork in a noodle dish). Dishes were some different flavors than I am used to in Thai restaurants, as they advertise. I was very interested in trying Isan region cuisine because I heard they also have more sour flavor dishes, compared to Central region dishes that are most commonly found in Thai restaurants. We did still get a red salmon curry that tasted very similar to red curries I'm used to (might I label it as a bit generic?). Some others in my party really enjoyed that dish though. The salmon skewer dish (in their tossed section) had well-grilled salmon, and tasted very fresh and light because of the herbs and mango. It also had a bit of bite from the lemongrass and red onion. I thought this was a great balance and I enjoyed the flavor! Two pork dishes (one soup, one noodle) that had very similar flavor to each other, and to a Chinese dish im more familiar with-- Hong shao rou 红烧肉--soy sauce and sugar flavor, basically. I think the portion sizes may have been small because it has higher quality ingredients, and it made me savor each bite more and really consider the flavor as I ate. It would have been nice if there was more though! The decor contributed a nice ambiance in a darker setting, colorful string lights woven all above the dining area. Overall, I'd probably recommend this restaurant more for a person looking for an experience of dining and trying new flavors, compared to visitors really trying to fill up and fill their bellies. read more

Ballard is also lucky to have really good Thai resturants, and this one in particular is a vibe with delicious, flavorful food, a warm bustling atmosphere, and excellent drinks (the Thai tea... so good) to boot. It's definitely a good date night or night out with friends kind of spot. HIGHLY recommend the khao soi. Of note, the menu here doesn't have all the offerings of your standard Thai restaurant because they focus more on the cuisine of northeast Thailand, which is their distinguishing factor. There's another amazing Thai place right down the block from here and I tried them both in a span of a week, and I would come back to both, haha. read more

If your looking for your ultra basic pad Thai or pad siew...then GTFO cuz this is not the place for you. Almost everything here is incredibly delicious and spicy. My go-to is guay tiow tom yum and my friend loves the ba mee hang muutoon. The tom yum is a spicy and sour noodle soup, topped off with some tasty ground pork and crunchy green beans & peanuts for texture. Honestly, the ba mee hang muutoon is a little too sweet for me but the noodles are amazing. Comes with some veggie and is topped off with chunks of pork belly. Yummm. I highly recommend this place. I came here for dinner a few nights ago with my girlfriend and got seated right away. It's in a cool neighborhood with a lot of restaurants in the surrounding area. I couldn't tell initially if this was an authentic Thai place or an Americanized version, but once I looked at the menu and got a whiff of the food I had a good feeling it was authentic and we were in the right spot. We ended up getting 3 dishes. The mee ka ti, the chicken larb, and the deconstructed noodle dish. I really enjoyed all 3. The mee ka ti has a really good texture. It is pretty sweet but has a nice kick. The chicken larb was probably my least favorite of the three, but still really good. I ate it with the sticky rice. It had a nice acidic addition and a good kick. Lastly, the deconstructed noodles were really tasty. I thought all of the ingredients were fresh and the sauce had a nice crunch. All in all, I would come back here again. I would probably try something new because there are so many good looking options on the menu. Overall 8.4/10 read more
