Petco in-store and corporate management allow mistreatment of the KittyKind rescue cats and kittens on display at the "new" Petco on Union Square. The enclosures are unsafe for the animals because people can get close to them and stick their fingers into the large air holes, possibly injuring the kittens or passing disease to them. Some owners allow their dogs to jump up and at the animals or bark at them. The KittyKind folks put a sign near the enclosures to ask people not to stick their fingers in the holes or touch the cats. Petco in-store management made them take the sign down. My emails to corporate get b.s. answers. They just don't care about the health of the animals that have, in some cases, already been traumatized through abandonment, living in a feral colony or worse. read more

A puppy's first time in training class and he decided that because she wasn't enthusiastic enough she needed to leave. Peter just say you have no idea what you're doing and find another job. When someone comes in for a wash and cut they shouldn't be mortified with the results! I have read a lot of complaints about your groomers as a whole. They randomly cancelled my dog's grooming appointment 3 times, which took me weeks to get and weeks of waiting. Incredible store. Super cute but i brought my dog in for a haircut and they RUINED my dog. They shaved his face so close to the skin and shaved his entire ears! First I ordered a same day delivery which not only didn't come same day but when I contacted the store to ask about it that evening they didn't have my order info there. Strange considering I was charged and it was posted on my bank. The second strange thing is I was then told they don't do same day delivery anymore because people don't get it. I booked an appt online for grooming on 5/11 for 5/13. When I arrived ten minutes early for my appt I was promptly told "you never confirmed your appointment so I was going to cancel you." I asked when and how a confirmation was sent as one had never been received on my end and I was confidently told it was texted to me, only for the employee to then read my profile and that I opted to not receive text messages. I checked my email and again, no request for confirmation was ever sent. I was then begrudgingly told that she could take my pet but I ultimately couldn't stay because the time needed was longer than I anticipated (which is on me). The whole situation didn't require the attitude and tbh I felt like I was being spoken to like I am illiterate when in reality, it seems the employees inability to read my profile mean the opposite was true. My American Bully puppy, Winter had a sick visit on 9/21 with Dr. Motelb. She and her vet tech, Gregory were absolutely terrific. Dr. Motelb was so thorough and enthusiastic with her care of Winter. It's so obvious that she loves what she does. Dr. Motelb answered all of my questions and even offered some tips and advice - which is something I always welcome. This is my second review of the Vetco clinic and it has only gotten better and better. They treat my sweet girl like a VIP, each and every time. I have the sweetest but sometimes skittish puppy and everyone at the clinic goes above and beyond for her. The old Union Square Petco had everything you could want and a staff that was pleasant and knowledgeable. The new "posh" Petco location has much less sales floor space and consequently, considerably fewer product options. The bird section is much-diminished with no wild bird section to speak of. Finding someone to help is definitely a challenge. If you are going to go upscale with prices to match, it is not unreasonable to expect well-trained staff to be available. Have fun with that. This was a terrible mistake. New York City pet owners were already suffering with the closure of ALL of the Petland stores. Having Petco change their target demographic to match whatever the city hopes will fill the super tall residential high rise towers that are affordable for only the 1% is a terrible business plan. Worse pet event ever. I attended the Halloween 2024 at the Petco at Union Square. It was a total waste of time. Costume contest was over an hour late and you don't want me to go on about the travesty of the "winners". Then to add insult to injury the "gift bags" contained not one edible treat for the fur babies but were filled with nothing but items that were meant for the trash as they were not sellable. My bf and I dropped Kawhi off to get groomed on Sunday March 21st. He had gotten his shots here earlier this month and everything went fine. After maybe 25-30 minutes we got a call saying Kawhi was being taken to Blue Pearl by one of the managers bc he had active bleeding from his ear. I didn't understand the gravity of the situation until the hospital emailed over his $1000 bill and a call saying he will need to be sedated so they can fix his ear because she clipped a very sensitive area and they have to stop the bleeding. He has to return in 2 weeks to get his sutures removed and is stuck wearing a cone. Carolina L said while she was pre shaving his legs, he moved and got clipped by her cutters. She said she never even worked on the ears and didn't know where the bleeding was coming from for about 2-3 minutes. Once Kawhi started waking up, his doctor called and explained the procedure over agin, aftercare, etc. She mentioned how they had finished grooming him because he was only halfway cut when he arrived and that it was before he went under and doesn't know how this could've happened. Kawhi was mishandled and this should have never happened. I understand dogs react differently but my dog was badly hurt in her care. I would have rather done this myself and have him look silly than go to Carolina L and have him hurt. I don't recommend her services and would strongly advise to go to someone else. read more

Such a shame! I was really hoping for some decent service from this location at Union Square. Not only do they ignore customers who need help in the aisles, they also show blatant rudeness when you ask for help. Earlier today I went in to purchase an item I saw available online (Petco.com) at this location. They charged me $54.99 when the listed price was only $21.95: same exact item and sku number. This store has a large selection of pet products. I went in primarily to look for a nose balm for my dog because she has a cracked nose from the cold weather. They only had paw balms, both of which had a minty smell to them and too strongly scented to put on a dog's snout. I did purchase some Greenies dental treats before I left. People should be aware that the sticker sale price on the shelf is for customers who have PetCo membership. Otherwise they will ring you up at full price. So, I am a regular Petco customer at this store, who made the mistake of going on a Saturday morning. It was pretty busy, but the line to check out wasn't terrible. When I got to the register, I might as well have been invisible. I said good morning to the cashier, (his name is Naseem, btw) not a word. Just kept ringing up my order. Told me to put in my phone number, asked me if I needed a bag and that was the extent of it. I said thank you- and NOTHING!! It really passed me off- asked to speak to a manager. HE WAS A MANAGER! There was another manager on the premises, so I was able to vent about the rude guy. At least the other manager had a little customer savvy. I stopped in today looking for a coat for my dog and found myself being helped by the amazing Leslie. She helped us so much by finding the perfect coat to fit my Lou boy, even offering to look in the back if they didn't have a size we wanted. Next thing I knew, Leslie and I were both on the floor doing a full coat fitting for my dog - her recommending appropriate sizes and then helping to see if they fit. Leslie was so knowledgeable, helpful, patient, proactive and kind - moving on after me to help an elderly lady find appropriate treats for her pets dietary restrictions. Throughout my 30 mins wandering around petco, I saw Leslie go above and beyond helping so many different people with all different sorts of pet needs - and not because people were asking her, but because she repeatedly was asking how she can help everyone who walked passed her. Seriously, I think I stayed in the store an extra few mins just in total admiration of her repeated kindness and willingness to help every stranger who walked passed her. In today's weird pandemic times, I walked out of the store and for the first time in a really long time at a retail environment, I thought to myself 'this is exactly what makes the in-store shopping experience far more superior than purchasing online'. Always come here for my pups since I work nearby, super convenient location in the middle of union square. Associates are readily available and typically are anxious to assist you with all needs! The things I need for my dogs are always in stock too which is great for going in and out in a minute. There was a cortisone spray I wanted to get and the associate at the register happily adjusted the price to what was displayed online, rather than the original in-store price, which was an $8 difference! Haven't got my dogs groomed here yet because they just began opening up appointments again, but I do have two scheduled. Associates seem to love their jobs as they're always smiling. Updating my review as I had recently had my grooming appointment with Carolina. She was aggressive with her tone and continuously misgendered my dog as I CONTINUOUS corrected her. She also refused to believe my dogs weight. I told her she was 11 pounds and she responded with a refusal and said "there was no ways he was over 10 pounds." She also gave my dog medicated shampoo and it gave her a bad reaction. $120 dollars out and with an allergic reaction. She was pushy about, "Have you seen her stomach? It's red." And my dog DID NOT arrive with that rash on her stomach. CAROLINA GAVE THAT RASH TO MY DOG WITH THE SHAMPOO. When she was looking through my pet's vaccinations records she was also looking through the entire folder, rather than asking for what she needed- explaining that the health certificates for passed flight was expired (which i already knew, and which she didn't need." I would like to book another grooming appointment with Petco grooming but Carolina is the only one available. I truly cannot believe I payed that much money for a rash and a stressful time. Carolina has a really bad attitude, speaks over customers, and is incredibly passive aggressive. Failing to even care about the gender of a dog she has been looking at for 3 hours. Absolutely frustrating experience using their same-day delivery service. I ordered three items on Monday. I completed my order and was prompted to choose a delivery window. The earliest delivery window available was on Tuesday between noon and 3 PM. Hardly same-day delivery, but it's the holiday season so I selected the earliest available window. Cut to Tuesday, and the delivery window passes. No delivery. Knowing it's the busy season, I call customer service to see if I need to make arrangements. The representative to whom I spoke, told me that my order would arrive by 4:50 PM. my same day delivery is now 24 hour delivery, I might as well have ordered from Amazon Prime. it certainly would've been cheaper. At 5 PM I begin receiving notifications on my cell phone via text and email all containing conflicting information with different anticipated delivery times and different information regarding which of my items will be delivered. Some notifications tell me all three of my items are being delivered, some tell me only two, others tell me only one item is being delivered. The difference in delivery estimates range from 5 PM to 6 PM. Note that at this point it's already 5 PM, so how can my order be arriving at 5 PM? I understand this review is more about the delivery process than the store, but the delivery is a service the store offers and the service is meant to make the shopping experience simpler. My shopping experience was nothing short of annoying and time sucking and has made me unlikely to shop with PetCo again in the future. It's experiences like these that are causing consumers to turn to places like Amazon. It's hard to feel sorry for businesses when they blame Amazon for their struggles, when these are the experiences you have when you try to give them your business. I understand that not every business can be Amazon, but the solution is really quite simple. Don't make promises you can't keep, and don't utilize technology that doesn't work properly. if a delivery is gonna take a day to make, say that. but consumers make decisions using good information. It would have been 100% easier and less stressful for me to have gone to the store myself. For a company with one and a half BILLION dollars in net revenue in Q2 for 2024, I expect more. We as consumers have to teach companies to earn our business again. I don't suppose Joel Anderson, the Petco CEO (who earns a base salary of 1.3 million) will ever see this review, or even cares. BEWARE OF FRAUD! I booked a grooming appointmet online a few weeks ago for my dog. I selected all of the appropriate choices, and was informed the cost to groom my dog would be $91 plus a $5.99 materials fee. I received numerous texts and emails confirming my appointment and arrived with my dog for his first grooming at this location. As I was providing the (very rude) staff with his vaccination records, the groomer informed me that the price online is not the price in the store. If I wanted the grooming that I had signed up for (at $91) it would cost about $140. Their "explanation" was that this is their flagship store, and therefore they could increase the prices. Except... they can't. New York State General Business Law (GBS) Chapter 20, Article 26, Section 396 states, in part, "No corporation, in any manner, or by any means of advertisement, or other means of communication, may offer for sale any service with the intent, design, or purpose not to sell the service at the price stated therein". It's FRAUD, and it's ILLEGAL. Eagerly awaiting a response, as Petco corporate has made no effort to respond to me after speaking with their customer service representative. read more

They did not mention this at pick up and I noticed when I got home and my dog wouldn't let me wipe her paws off. I tried to call twice to speak with them and no answer. I'm really sorry that I have to leave this review. I'm not the kind of reviewer that goes on Google or Yelp and trashes businesses for no reason (you can read my other reviews if you don't believe me), but this has to be put up as a word of warning. My aquarium lost some fish over time (nothing unusual, but we hadn't replaced them) and we were down to just a few and I wanted to repopulate the tank. I tested the water before heading to the fish store and the Ph was about 7.6 (maybe slightly high but the water out of the tap here is pretty alkaline), but it's the same as it's been in the tank for years. I had never been to Petco before and the reviews where pretty solid on Google, not here by contrast), so since they're fairly close to me I decided to give them a try. Bought two baby fuzzy nosed plecos, some cherry barbs, a bunch of neon tetras and a few others that added up to probably $40 to $50 in fish. I had to leave town for a couple of weeks and my girlfriend was in charge of feeding (which she's good at) and general tank monitoring. A few days into my trip, she started reporting to me that some of the new fish had died. I thought that was unusual but I figured perhaps the shock of changing tanks (? ... although we'd never had that happen), and as the days passed, more and more fish were dying. We finally figured out that we had brought Ich disease in with these new fish (white spots appearing on the fish) and it was killing all of them. It killed both our baby plecos, all the tetras and cherry barbs, and we are now left with two fish (the name of which I can't remember, but they have stripes). We got Ich medicine for the tank but not in time to save most of the fish. I didn't realize that we needed to save the dead ones to prove what was going on to the pet store and we flushed them, so I'm out the money at this stage. However, just a word to the wise, I would not recommend this store for buying fish. We have never had a problem in four-plus years of owning a tank and we certainly didn't have Ich disease in our tank before bringing these fish in. The existing fish had been in the tank for quite a while, years, in fact. The folks in the aquarium department there were super nice and helpful, but obviously bringing a bunch of fish home with a deadly disease ruined the experience. Buyer beware. read more

I love coming to Petco to see all the animals that are available. Most of the staffs that work there really know what they are doing and about the animals that they sell. (most of the time) But I feel that sometimes they don't treat the animals right. One example would be the fish section. Everytime I come in to just check it out ,The fresh water fishes are always crammed into a task and are like dying. You can tell that something is wrong with them. It's always the goldfishes too. I feel sad that that happens; oh and there would always be a fish that is died in the tank. The staff should really take care of that because it can deff cause problems for the other fishes. The place is always clean which is a plus since customers are able to bring bring in their pets . I love coming to this Petco so much! They have seriously been the best place to shop for my fur baby's needs. They don't have everything in stock in this or any of their locations but I usually get around that by placing orders online for those items. So, I've been to this location at least a dozen times at this point, to where one of the sales associates said "you just can't stay away from us". She was quite nice and assisted me with returning a product of the wrong size that I actually opened. Not only did she exchange it but she also matched it to the online (lower) price without me asking. Each time i have purchased, I have had them price match items online without me asking. They are also amazing with buy online, pick up in store service which I use very often due to their coupon where you get 20% off of in-store pick up over $50. I easily spend over $50 quite often as I try to get as many supplies as possible. I also use Petco in general for my puppies vaccines which has also been a great experience but this location gets booked super fast - I've noticed a huge pet population in the area and it's easily accessible by the train. I plan to get my pup groomed here once he's fully vaccinated & also hope to do some training here. They offer most services here and the dog food scent actually makes me hungry upon entering. SO, according to Petco lady on the phone now I'm at the whim of UPS going back and retrieving said package (none of this is their fault so why would they?) and shipping it back to Petco where upon receiving it they will then refund my money. SO if it's stolen or kept by the current resident I'm out $300. Somehow this box must magically arrive back at Petco before I'm refunded ( and still not have the item I ordered ) NOT RECOMMENDING PETCO ONLINE. I still like the people at my local Petco, but sadly, I just can't do business with this company again. read more
