awful experience getting my puppys grooming done here. I dropped him off for a bath and a cut and they told me that they could not cut his fur and he needed to be there for 5 hours to get his bath and face trimed. when I went back 4 and a half hours later, the employees were incredibly rude and told me I was too early and had not even begun grooming him. he sat in a crate in the back soaking wet for 5 hours until I finally told them I wanted my dog. they waited 30 more minutes until giving him to me and charged me $90 to just give him a bath. Save yourself the aggravation and don't go here for grooming. It's poorly managed and the groomers are poorly trained. I only wanted a hygiene trim but that didn't even happen after a 4 hour wait. If they are running that late, they should proactively reach out and discuss rescheduling for another date or time. There is no regard to trying to keep to the time or the schedule (it could take 1 hour or 5 hours). Save yourself the frustration and go someplace else. read more

I have been a petco customer for years. Mt phone number is registered. This afternoon I stopped by to get Rachael Ray dry cat food. After paying I asked the clerk, a young woman by the name of Alison if I could use the bathroom. She said that there are no bathrooms. I know that that petco store in Turtle Bay does have a bathroom. I have asked to use the bathroom in my other visits and was given the key. I didn't want to argue with the clerk this afternoon or ask to speak to the manager. I've consistently had great service and help during my visits here. My family recently adopted 2 kittens, who got all their vaccinations, check-up, as well as micro chipping done here at their Vetco, for the fraction of the price I'd be charged at vets around NYC. (I know bc I've been taking my dog to private NYC vets for years now and checked their pricing) There is often a long wait (although occasionally not), but IMO its worth it, as the vet we saw on most Saturday's there is great. It's a no-frills type vet service and the vet isn't the most talkative, but the vet and her assistant are professional, prompt, and attentive to my pets' needs. Vetco aside, the rest of the store's staff has always been wonderful in my experiences. They've all been helpful with suggestions and in assisting me in finding the right products. read more

I will never take my dog there to get groomed again!!!! I took my French Bulldog to get groomed. When I picked her up, she was hyperventilating and breathing really hard. She was like that for at least 1/2 hour. I had to take her to the vet. Long story short MY DOG ALMOST DIED OF HEAT STROKE! The vet said they had to have had her in a hot area and she was like that for some time. The visit cost me over 1k! When I They traumatized me and my poor dog. Not a bad Petco at all located on the north west side of Union Square. If you're in the area, especially for the dog park, and need pet supplies, they have a pretty extensive selection. Pricing is commensurate for the area and Manhattan in general. It's expensive if you get all the food/kitty litter/ etc. here but picking up an occasional item shouldn't break the bank. This location has many adoption events out front as well as events that spill over into Union Square. Please patronize these events and consider making adoption your first option. read more

My teenage daughter has a gecko that likes to eat crickets. Petco in Union Square won't allow her to buy crickets, because they don't sell live animals to minors. 1) How does this teach kids responsibility? 2) Whether daughter buys crickets or I do, those "live Animals" will die in gecko's mouth! Which segues into my next problem, as I have to go in to buy crickets: not enough staff downstairs. No employee downstairs has ever approached me to ask if I need help. Every single time, I've had to seek someone out. Once I find an employee, they're either actually busy or pretending that they're doing something so important that they can't even look at me standing there. There have been plenty of times that I've just left the store without crickets. Don't blame this on COVID staff shortages either, as this has been the case for years. Please do not come here. I have had nothing but horrible service. I went to go to do a self wash for my puppy, and the lady in front of me was crying because of how bad of a job the employee did on her dog's haircut. It even looked like the dog had blood in some spots. They turned me away even after I showed my dogs Rabbie's vaccine, because it was not sufficient. And that was after three employees left me up front at the kiosk for 10 minutes by myself. Just left, saw me and walked away. I have done the wash there 5 times before, and I have never been asked for vaccines. The last time, an employee yelled at me for washing my dog, even after I checked in and got all of the materials, and paid for the service. She was too busy on her phone to notice I was there, and had been checked in on someone else. I hope it gets better there, it really is a pretty store. read more

The grooming service here is unprofessional. Brought my girl in for a nail trim and had a horrible experience. Everything but this is good at this location. The next review is ONLY for the grooming service. Not for the rest. I schedule an bath appointment online. I specified the breed, age, weight etc. The price was 20$. If I wanted a full haircut wit a bath it was43$. I confirm the appointment and 3 days later went to petco. When I got there I thought maybe I should get my puppy a hair cut as well. When I asked if it is available they say that it is. Great. They print out the bill. It was 100$. I asked how is it possible since online it is 43$. They say that the prices online are not final. Since I thought it is overpriced for Petco (Walmart for pets) I decided to stick to just a bath. They quote it, after negotiations, at 60$. 60$ for a bath in petco. 3 times more expensive than the original price. I left angry. I had to cancel a private class which cost me extra. Bottom line- they will rip you off with their prices. Go to your local groomer and support small businesses. Petco. We are done! read more

No answer????? Tried calling corporate in San Diego. Nope. Can't do that either. No phone # available. Only an email address. Phooey on Petco. As the saying goes, "It's not customer service until someone answers the phone.". The average IQ in Petco can't be more than 75. read more

UPDATE** Petco has been giving me the runaround and refuses to acknowledge any responsibility for the grave error they made in severely overvaccinating my poor 12lb senior rescue pup. After calling Petco/Vetco Union Square multiple times, the vet tech responsible for the error (Lindsay with the pink hair), refused to acknowledge any error and continued to redirect to call corporate customer service. I was told by customer service that they were very sorry for the "inconvenience" but to rectify with the local store where the error was made. Upon returning (and Lindsay avoiding eye contact at all cost) to at least get a refund for the unnecessary vaccination that was given, endangering the life of my dog, I was again told to call customer service! Go to a real vet and save your time (and your pet's health and life)! read more

Because Petsmart didn't have the items I had wanted, I decided to go to Petco. I loved how each section was nicely organized because I was lost in the aquatic section for awhile. I love looking at bettas and decors there because I do own bettas, myself. Everything looks well stocked and I was asked if I needed help a few times. I'd love to buy more things for my betta, but my tank is already so full. My bettas love those floating flower beds and Petco definitely has a bigger selection of fish than Petsmart. I fell in love with 2 female bettas, but because I shouldn't house anymore than I already have that'll disturb my communal living with my current set, I held off the impulse. Oh they also have the $1/gallon tanks available, but carrying a tank in the bag from Union Sq. would be indeed too heavy for my T-rex (baby) hands. I had a friend that owned a fancy fantail pigeon, but lacked a variety of food. Luckily that pigeon eats most seeds and when I saw black oil sunflower seeds, how could I not? Regrets were made on the train carrying a 8 pound bag and a whole lot of seedy bags. However, the pidgey loved it. He waddles to it quickly before eating his usual food. read more

I hesitate to give Petco 4 stars especially after my Yelp rant's about not buying from them but, we popped in this past weekend after lunch with my family and were completely blown away by their new renovations. Maybe there had been so many complaints about this particular Petco that they decided to invest some time and money into it and products they carry. Whatever the reason, the decision was a good one. Just a few weeks ago, this store was barren. Now it's stocked with a lot more products. Quality products, toys and "healthy" pet food conscious. Large sections devoted to dogs and cats. Fish and small animals remain downstairs and they've added a training area for dog training. Very cool. I don't want to give a full 5 stars because even with all the improvements, they were still lacking in some areas. To be specific, they STILL do not carry the popular cat scratcher I like for my cat and they had a very slim selection of beta fish. Females to be exact and of course all the reasons I stated in my previous reviews but overall they've made some great strides. read more

I have tried to call the help# and have been on hold longer than 35 minutes. 3x's I will try to call them again in the AM but this sucks. The order was for my dog, treats- gotta have them. As a supply store, this place is fine. As caretakers of living creatures, they need a lot of work. It used to be better than this, but I went in a couple of days ago to look at small animals for adoption, and they had 3 rats in their adoption center in deplorable conditions. Each was in a separate tank. Each had feces caked all over their food bowl and shelter -- it looked like they had never been washed. Each animal's water bottle had algae or mold growing inside, so the poor critters had no access to clean water. (See photo.) This is inexcusable for any animal, but can be a cause of longterm health problems for rats, which have very sensitive little digestive systems. Mold is a neurotoxin for them. It took 1/2 hour to get attention from a staff member. I asked her if I could handle the rats in the adoption center and if she would change their water bottles. She was really rough, slamming the sliding cages out, flipping the lids on top of the tank harshly and making a lot of loud, sharp motions which clearly unnerved and upset the rats. She told me, "I hate rats! I don't like them and they don't like me!" and... it just depresses me profoundly that PetCo seems to have a fairly significant staff population of people who hate animals. It's not like working retail, where the items being sold have no feelings. These are living creatures, and they deserve respect and care. The employee changed 2 of 3 moldy waterbottles. So at least 2 of those rats had a better night. read more

I've had my dog groomed here about 10 times over the past year. Most of the staff are extremely friendly and welcoming from the time I walk in until the time I leave. Bryan normally works on my pup, and he's a really nice guy who genuinely seems to like my dog a lot. One thing that needs improving is the checkout process-I cannot pay at the grooming area where I pick up my dog--instead I have to get a receipt from the grooming desk, then walk to a register in another part of the store, and then return to collect my dog. I am also charged an additional seven dollars for them to use a veterinarian recommended medicated shampoo that I supply myself each and every time. It makes no sense to me that I should have to pay extra for them to use a grooming product that I've purchased myself. But overall Petco seems very focused on good customer service and their pricing is very reasonable. read more

We met with Bryan and he was very helpful, very attentive and made us feel much better answering all our questions. Our pup even felt safe being near him. He had a great vibe. Open late. How good can you get? There are some really harsh reviews and I'm not sure why. Come for the pet food, stay for the adorable kittens KittyKind has. I get roped into the cat corner every time I run in to buy cat food. I haven't been here in a long while, but when I do come they always have the food I need in stock, along with less expensive ( and more expensive) brands. There is usually an associate around to help you out and the line goes pretty quickly. It does get busy, but I usually go during the later hours. Recently came here after my boyfriend and I were beginning a new aquarium family (for what feels is like the umpteenth time, lol). I was beginning to get tired of Petland's limited sealife selection and after our Dalmatian Molly passed away, I wanted to see what Petco's selection was like. Considering that my boo thang and I live within walking distance of 2 Petlands, I really had to convince him that Petco was going to have infinitely more available. I've been here once before to purchase an accessory for our hermit crab, but had never really checked out their tanks - so I to be honest, I wasn't sure - but we came out here on a Sunday afternoon and we're both pleasantly surprised! Downstairs they have a really great selection of sea creatures - crayfish, seahorses, miniature lobsters (neon red, tangerine and vanilla - and no, these are NOT flavors), eels (Tessalata and Striped Peacock), fiddler crabs and a ton more fish varieties than any Petland I've ever been to! It was like Disneyland for fish lovers - saltwater AND freshwater marine life, yaaaaay!!! We ended up purchasing a red aquatic crab, a fiddler crab, a balloon Molly and a Buenos Aires Tetra. Their names respectively are Mr. Crabsworth (aka Professor Crabsworth), Veronica, Cheetoh and Betty. Cheetoh (the little orangey-colored Balloon Molly) only lasted 4.5 days...I later learned online that Balloon Mollies are the result of a genetic defect that causes their spine to grow irregularly, and to have more health problems than regular mollies, and according to some, shortens their lives. This spine defect causes them to do poorly throughout their lives, and if allowed in a breeding population, could lead to more mollies being born with this defect...I wasn't trying to breed, but yeah - Cheetoh wasn't really a confident little fish, he kept getting bullied around by Betty the Tetra...her and our 2 little crabs are still going strong. As I was waiting in line to pay for our fish, crabs, glofish gravel and blue neon flourecent lighting kit + bulb, one of the employees mentioned to the cashier person that he had to break up a fight between two fish and that one of the fish was now in "Wellness"...I'm glad they have a wellness areas for animals who may get hurt during the day to day life at Petco o_o. In all, my experience here was 4 stars. Super knowledgable employees (shoutout to Juan in the sealife/fish section who got my Magickarp reference!), fantastic selection for all types of pets - prices could definitely be better (Petland absolutely wins here) but I would definitely return here again. read more

I primarily visit this Petco to pick up Greenies for my cat, an item that is not easy to come by in my parts of New Jersey so I've never done a huge, in depth exploration of the place. I have walked through the entire store to check out the assortment of critters and see different types of cat food, but it looks to me like any other large scale store - a gigantic warehouse of "stuff". I do have to give this place kudos for their adoption program. I swear every time I see the wall of cats, I feel horrible that I can't take them all home. I call it the "Wall of Guilt" which I try to assuage by donating to the wall's food fund now and then. I've always found the staff here friendly and willing to help out. They also manage to get a register line processed really quickly which they deserve kudos for. read more

I've been coming here for about 2 months now since getting Cookie Dough, a Jack Russell mix. Our weekends and evenings now only consist of hey, let's go to Petco. Umm, Petco where the pets go? I think it's more like where my Washingtons and Benjamins go. Having a new puppy is a terrifying experience since everyone always scares the crap out of you saying that the whole city is covered with parvo, diseases, herpes, AIDS, crime, blah blah that will eat your pup alive. We ended up taking our dog to petco pretty much every Saturday and sunday for puppy socialization playtime since it was a clean, controlled experience with trainers that will explain to you the nuances of how dogs play: -dogs bark, no big deal -dogs bite, no big deal -dogs hump, no big deal In most cases the dogs learn to work it out for themselves and we don't have to step in. It breaks my heart to see owners beat their dogs and using negative reinforcement to discourage dog behavior. The store's selection actually is pretty good surprisingly. I went to the larger Manhattan Valley petco and couldn't find a pet carrier, so ended up coming back here. Like a big box store, if you know what you want and don't mind helping yourself, then you'll be pleased. read more

This review is specifically for Bryan in grooming. He greeted June and me in such a calming and gentle manor, and for a pup that is constantly on edge, her nerves were quelled immediately. Bryan made June feel so comfortable while assessing her and sharing with me what he thought she needed done. He was not pushy at all and answered any questions I had about the appointment. Truly such a relief since Petco is a rather large company you may think that the grooming department just churns our dogs daily on some sort of assembly line, but it was so clear that that isn't the case there. Never going back to petco again. I went to petco for grooming service and I even traveled further to this one because it's grooming ratings are better than the one near me. When I signed up for the appointment it was estimated for $65, after the session was completed was told the total is $115 because I requested her body fur to be cut which apparently is not included in the $65 despite online saying it's the full grooming package. My dog is a puppy so they kept telling me she was moving a lot during the cut and would need to bring her in like once a week to be cut so she gets used to it. I was in a rush to pick her up and go back to work that I didn't think much of it. I got home and inspected her cut later and there's jagged edges from cuts that went deeper than the rest on her back. There's a little dip in the fur on her ears. I expected her face to be kept round but didn't verbalize this and thought I'd trust the groomer to do what's best but my dogs face is now so small and sharp that she looks like a completely different dog that I almost don't recognize. I was advised to join their vital care membership for discounts on grooming and was reassured that I could cancel the membership at ANY point. I even explicitly asked if I could cancel it after one month if I don't think I'd come back for grooming services and was told yes. After how unsatisfied i was with this haircut, I immediately called to try to cancel next months membership from renewing. Customer service told me the membership is a one year commitment and I can't get out of it. I can maybe call back later and see if they can cancel it but it's not guaranteed because it's a year long commitment. This was not made clear to me at all. With the non- transparent pricing, poor haircut, and misinformation I will not be returning to petco again read more

Worse experience will never take my dog there again. My 7 month old mini goldendoodle named Biscuit was scheduled for a grooming. Never has he had an issue with anyone. Even at the Petco store 2 customers and an employee interacted with him. Played with and petted Biscuit, he was fine. The person who checks in the dogs asked us to walk away while examining him, he comes back and tells us he can't take Biscuit because he petted his paws and he growled, literally stated to me and my 2 sons and this is a direct quote , "it might be me that Biscuit doesn't like, he might do fine with the actual groomers, but I don't feel comfortable with him going in there" his co-worker was literally playing with Biscuit and even came back and gave him a treat, like i said 2 other customers played and petted Biscuit no problem.... I only went there because my other groomer was booked for a week, when leaving one of the customers, an old lady who just played with him was shocked that they denied Biscuit grooming...my appointment was for 2:15pm, April 5 2024. Everything i stated I'm sure is on one of the several surveillance systems the store has just in case anyone wants to challenge my review. I will never go there again for grooming and I'm considering finding another store tobuy my food from, its Long Island NY we have pet stores and groomers all around... Petco just lost a loyal customer. read more
