This review is for their grooming department. Saturday was my second time coming here. My mistake. The first time they cut my dog's hair way too short for their breed but I figured next time I come in, I'll ask for a longer cut. And maybe the groomer was new, I didn't want to be that kind of customer. Mind you, I have an American Eskimo. Second time was this past weekend. Checking in was a breeze which was nice, the lady asked for my rabies record and I let her know that I had brought all my documents in last time and was told I wouldn't need to bring it again moving forward. She said that was fine and then started to take my dog back. I was a little surprised she didn't ask me what kind of cut I wanted, so I brought it up and she said they would just do the same as last time. Oh okay, at least confirm with me? I asked for something longer and she showed me the length they could do, which I was good with. Couple hours later, I get a call saying that my dog had mats that needed to be shaved. I'm thinking she meant, shave off the mats and just that. But when i came to pick him up, they had shaved him completely. Again, my dog is an American Eskimo. Their double coat is what keeps them warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Can they be shaved? Sure. Should they be shaved? Uh .. NO. Otherwise, their fur may not grow back the same. On top of that, they didn't even shave him evenly. He has patches on his body that are longer than the rest. And now that the weather is getting cooler, especially at night, he just shivers. I have to wrap him in a blanket cause he looks cold. I'll probably have to get him a sweater now cause when I'm at work, there's nobody there to put a blanket on him. I really wanted to say something but honestly, the damage was done. I still tipped my groomer $15 for a $76 service even though I was completely unhappy. So .. thanks a lot Petco. I will not be going back. You may be close to my house but I'd rather take my dog elsewhere where they know how to cut specified to the breed. read more

Products are fine. Grooming is terrible. I have a sweet 2-year old Golden who gets a bath and blow dry once a month. Has had his hair cut a couple of times. However I was told my dog is too stressed for a blow dry and so couldn't complete the hair cut service. I was told he needed to be sedated! He has been banned from Petco. This review is mainly for the dog self-wash. While the store overall is fine and relatively clean, the self-wash area is a disaster. We've washed our fluffy dog here a few times because our local Petco self-wash is closed. Pros: * There's no time limit which we need for our extra fluffy dog Cons: * Everything seems to be broken from the ramps to the sprayers * The drains are all clogged so the dirty water fills the tub * The tubs are dirty and full of fur so we have to clean them (I've never seen an attendant in the wash area) * The floors are dirty * Towels aren't always provided * If more than one tub is being used, it's really crowded * Ventilation is needed... the room is always hot and steamy like a sauna * My son says "it's like a giant's arm pit" in that it's really stinky read more

I used to take my dog to doggie day care almost everyday while I went to work because he had a hard time adjusting to my parents dogs. The staff was also so friendly when I dropped my pup off and he was always so excited to drive up to the doors. They pay close attention to your pets, have a clean environment and even with all of the dogs there, there was never an issue because of the supervision. My favorite staff member of the store is definitely James. He is always helpful and has a smile on his face. Even two years later, he remembers my dogs name every time we walk in (without doggy daycare). Keep up the good work and customer service! read more

I had an 11:30am appointment to get my 7lb, 5 year old Yorkie groomed. He has been groomed here many times before, so I thought it wouldn't be an issue. Upon dropping him off, I was told that I would be contacted in 2 hours. After hearing nothing by 2pm, my father called and asked the status. We were told that his haircut wasn't started and to call back in 2 hours. So my poor dog had been sitting in a metal cage for 2.5 hours untouched?? What's the point of an appointment? 30 minutes later we get a call saying he was ready for pick up. When he was picked up we were told he tried to bite the groomer and we weren't welcomed back... so his haircut wasn't started until we called and then he's ready to go 30 minutes later? Seems to me that he was sitting in the cage and the haircut was rushed after we asked questions. My dog is very anxious and weary of other people, which was known at drop off. Why would you rush something with a dog who takes time to warm up to people? When I called to inquire what happened, I was told that he had been hostile before and that I had been informed that he has tried to bite during previous grooming sessions. This is complete BS because every time I've picked him up, I have been told he was sweet and a complete love. If he has never been cooperative, I would have never continued to take him to a place he wasn't comfortable. Now to get to his "haircut." His body was shaved, his nails remained untrimmed and his face wasn't even touched. They didn't shave his front legs. He is completely traumatized and un-proportional. I should have known by the way he cried just pulling into the parking lot that a hatch job would have been done. In trying not to sound like a Karen I'll say this: My pets are my family. I treat them with the same care and respect as I would my child. I am fully aware that my dog is a handful and has severe separation anxiety -- a fault of my own, but the way he was treated and handled today was horrible, unprofessional and inexcusable. Although I was angry and probably came across harsh, I do not appreciate how I was spoken to today nor how this was handled. I will not stand for being gaslit and lied to. I DO NOT recommend Petco for grooming and am sad thinking they have a reputation for a reason. read more

I called into this locations Petco to see if they had any kittens in the adoption center because I am wanting to adopt a kitten. I had previously called the day before and a very friendly guy told me they had one kitten in store. So today I called again just to double check if they still had any kittens and a girl named BIANCA answered. I kindly asked her " hi, I was just calling to see if you had any kittens in store" she extremely rudely replied "Um no, this is Petco" and then hung up on me. I have never received such horrible service for asking a simple question. I come into this location all the time to buy pet food and other pet supplies as well as play with the animals in the adoption center. I then called back and she answered again and she did not even deny that she hung up on me, and she refused to tell me whether or not they had any animals in store. Horrible service. Such a shame one horrible employee ruined a good store. UPDATE: Aside from my previous review, the staff has been nothing short of kind and helpful in the recent times we have came here and I am updating my review for the wonderful service we received from the Vetco center today for our kittens shots. My experience at this petco is probably the worst experience I've ever had. There was these girls working at the animal adoption place which was at the front of the store and I asked if I could hold one of the dogs and they said no. However, they let other people hold the dog because they were WHITE people. It seems like they didnt let me hold one of the dogs because of my race. These girls were white and extremely racist. I still furious this happened to my family and me. Also, they were glancing at us and I think they were talking bad about us. They're messed up. I wanted to write a review on their Petco Play Daycare. This is a bit delayed but I took my dog there from to April 2017-August 2017. The staff there was AMAZING at the time. They also had a doggy cam where I was able to watch Aries play throughout the day (it gave me a piece of mind knowing I can see what she is doing all day). The daycare was also reasonably priced. I always take my dog to their grooming salon and have never had a problem. It usually takes 2-3 weeks to get an appointment. The groomer Bianca refused to take my dog in after I mentioned that he used to have elevated liver enzymes in the past. This is not even related to anxiety or any other issue that might cause a problem with grooming. It was quite insulting to be told "I think the best place to take him is to a vet's" after being kept waiting for 30 mins. This store is huge and extremely clean. Lots of possible gifts to get your furry little family member. My gf made an appointment to get Buddy trimmed at 11am on a Sunday morning. We arrived but they didn't have us booked for some reason. Fortunately they able to get Buddy in for a haircut. The employees were extremely helpful and handle our pup with care. We received a call by the end of the day to pick him up. We were very satisfied with his haircut, however, it didn't look like his nails got trimmed. PLEASE READ IF LOOKING FOR BETTA FISH OR OTHER AQUARIUM-RELATED PURCHASES. This is going to be lengthy. I'm going to primarily review the aquarium section. First, allow me to say the one good thing about this location is the HSSV branch located in the back of the store. However, please note that they are not managed or otherwise affiliated with Petco. The aquariums: Let's step into a time machine. September 2014. Just before this time I became a betta fish enthusiast. I learned everything I could about fish and especially betta fish. One day I walk into the store to find FOUR dead betta fish that someone had shoved on the bottom shelf. Yikes! I took photos, complained on twitter (tweets are still there) and emailed corporate. I received a phone call sometime within a week from the district manager (I don't believe it was the region manager). She said that she would ensure the staff are following appropriate procedures/would be trained on this issue. She informed me there was a clipboard somewhere that staff has to sign stating they checked ____ area. Things slightly improved for a little bit. Fast-forward one year later. Friday, October 16, 2015 just before 8pm, I was in the store for ghost shrimp and various silk plant accessories/marimo balls, etc. You know, betta fish stuff. First, the betta fish end-cap was HORRIBLE. Almost all of the fish were sick. Many were floating on their sides. Many were alive but unresponsive to me or my fingers. If you know bettas, then you know if you start to move a finger close to them, they'll usually swim around. Many had their faces dug into the bottom of their little cups w/their butts floating upwards and just falling over if cup was moved, though still alive. (No, the fish were not sleeping. If you wake a sleeping betta, it will still swim around like normal.) Some had ripped fins or signs of fin rot. My boyfriend, who also loves betta fish, was soo disturbed, he couldn't even look at them and walked away. Betta fish are HARDY little dudes. However, they are TROPICAL. They need 75-80F water. They need 7-8 hours a day of light max. They go to sleep pretty much on the same schedule as their humans. Okay, so many may see them as some $8 fish. It would be costly to have a heated tank for each of these solitary fish. But better procedures could be taken to ensure they are not so susceptible to illness and disease. How about providing them with a full shelf instead of an endcap? Give them a heated area. CHANGE THEIR WATER DAILY. The only time you don't change the water daily is when they are in a CYCLED, FILTERED AQUARIUM. These bros are in dirty, freezing little cups. OF COURSE they are going to get sick and die before someone can even take them home. And who wants to buy dying betta fish? I left the area to find my SO. He told me there were no ghost shrimp at this location. I helped double-check and yes, they actually do sell ghost shrimp. However, only visit this location if you want DEAD ghost shrimp. EVERY SINGLE SHRIMP WAS DEAD. I'm talking approximately 15+ ghost shrimp all dead in the bottom of a tank. Some had been dead for so long, they had a strange film forming around their corpse. I didn't know initially that this meant the shrimp had been dead for a while. However, after leaving this place, I went to another pet store and told a staff member what I had observed. He told me the strange film forms when they are dead for a while. And of course, there were maybe 3-4 I saw that were beyond that point even. Okay. So we're not getting any shrimp from here, we quickly realize. I was still considering African Dwarf frogs. The aquarium containing ADFs is 1-2 below the shrimp. Well, in that tank is a dead/decaying frog. Right smack against the front glass. By this point, my boyfriend and I were so upset that we put our things down and left. I didn't even want to risk purchasing something from those aquariums b/c who knows how dirty that water is, what bacteria may be running rampant, what diseases may be in there, etc. The ghost shrimp and frogs were in the main aquarium section, but somehow even these guys were neglected. What gives? Is someone faking their checklist that says "yep, I took care of this area" ? Dear Petco, If you cannot provide proper care for fish or train your staff better to do so, then do not sell the fish. Please train your aquarium people. And for the higher ups, please manage your staff. There's no excuse for this. tl;dr DON'T BUY FISH HERE EVER!!! read more

Petco - Slightly disturbing pic of their betta selection - Pet Stores Near Me - San Jose, California

I was surprised at the size of the adoption center, but the first day we were just looking around. Monday, I came back to consider the mice. I was pretty quickly greeted and provided service, however the woman assisting me did not seem very knowledgeable about the mice I was looking at. Petco's own website says not to pick mice up by their tails, but this is what she did multiple times. I asked some of the same questions about keeping mice together rather than separately etc, and she gave me different answers than the associate I spoke to at a different Petco, so that was confusing. She had no clue how old the mice were. While I am happy with the mice I bought, I have a vet appointment in a half hour as one of them seems to have a respiratory infection. Remembering the 15 day guarantee, I called them about it, to find out this meant "returning" the mouse, and then after it gets vet care I can "buy it back". The most disturbing piece of this process is that there is no guarantee WHEN the pet will be taken to the vet. Respiratory infections can KILL mice, and I'm horrified at the thought of taking my little guy back with no guarantee that he'll be treated in time to survive, much less whether he'd be tossed back in to potentially get re-infected or purchased by someone else? (I would like to think this isn't the case, but if they couldn't even guarantee prompt vet care there is simply no trust here). I'm sad I gave Petco my business, but take solace in having 'rescued' two sweet little cuties from whatever other fate may have befallen them here, whether respiratory infection, snake feeding, or who knows. read more

I like the fact that you can bring your pet in here with you, even though a lot of the dog owners who DO bring their dogs here probably shouldn't. I really like the selection that they have here, you're pretty much assured to find what you're looking for or at least something comparable. Actually, and i must say i was kinda surprised by this, they do not carry a particular filter for a cat litter box for a cat litter box that they sell in the store. Seems kinda dumb, you carry the litter box, but you don't carry the replacement filter for it...oh well. I ended up just grabbing one out of another litter box and trying to buy it. What bothers me is that is that some of the people who work at this store aren't really all that knowledgable when it comes to animals. I mean, i'm not expecting to have a veterinarian working at the cash register, but as has often been the case, when asking pet questions, i end up with an 'i don't know' answer. My family and I recently adopted a new dog but let me say we had no idea what we were doing. I visited this store along with our new dog to get everything we needed. A girl named Megan must of noticed how lost and frustrated I was when she came to me and offered to help. First off all let me mention I was carrying our dog because i didn't have a leash or anything. She told me to hold on a minute, when she came back she had a cart with a rather adorable dog bed inside for me to set the dog down. (I ended up purchasing the bed) She then spent a considerable amount of time helping me find EVERYTHING i could possibly want or need. And she introduced me to the dog trainer, and told me about all the other services their shop offers. When it was time to go she walked us to the registers and personally rang us up. She signed me up for a rewards card which knocked off over $80 off my bill. And she also used some coupon she had at the registers to save me another 5. She even picked up my crate and bag of dog food and put it in my truck without even asking if I wanted the help! Seriously, THE BEST service! read more

I love this petco for 2 reasons: Doggy Daycare & the Humane Society. During the daytime Monday through Saturday, the doggy day care is open and I walk into Petco on my lunch break to look at the sweet doggies. I'm always welcomed when I enter the store, and the employees don't seem to mind me frequenting their store just to look at the dogs. They have two separate rooms for large or small sized dogs or dogs that may not enjoy being with other dogs depending on their size or breed, and there is always somebody in the room with them cleaning up after them or giving them attention or playing with them. (So jealous). The Humane Society however, has lots of adoptable animals including cats and occasionally dogs as well and rabbits and mice and sometimes guinea pigs. The volunteers here are very knowledgeable and sweet and will let you handle and play with any of the animals as long as you sanitize your hands before and afterwards, are above the age of 18 and can clearly demonstrate you have respect for living creatures. Aside from all that this Petco has a lot of supplies, and their own store animals which I personally would not advise unless you can ask them where they were bred, when they were bred, to ensure that safe breeding practices were followed and your pet will be happy and healthy. :-) read more

This is a nice spacious Petco in El Paseo's shopping center. It's near the movie theater. The store has everything you expect from a Petco, and the employees are nice. I deducted a star because one of the adoption representatives is extremely rude. We've not tried to adopt a pet here, but we love to see the animals and sometimes that leads to meeting other animal lovers. A memory that hurts like cystic acne was an adoption event wherein a couple came in asking some questions that got snarky retorts from this one loudmouth volunteer. The man explained gently that they were helping a friend look for a new pet. The bitch SHOUTED at him how inappropriate that was, the friend needs to find his own pet. As if this guy would foist a pet on someone as a surprise. Ridiculous. First, there's nothing wrong with exploring options and leads with the help of friends or rescuers. We did that. To adopt our kitty, helpful volunteers all over Northern and Central CA were searching (going to shelters, making phone calls, checking with other volunteers, looking online, sending us leads) for the right match for us. Didn't mean they were the ones personally adopting said cat. Saving lives is what animal rescuers were born to do; it's like breathing to them. Second, the adoption procedures require an in-person interrogation -- or what they call an interview -- with the prospective adopters, so any leads the friend could provide were just those -- not an actual adoption. So WTF was the shrieking fishwife so pissy about? We were mortified. Of course, the couple slinked away and maybe would never bother looking in a Petco again. She really was awful. If she's you, you're a jackass!!! I love and respect that volunteers are doing God's work by saving and rehoming animals, plus all the administrative details that involves, but really, there's no need to be an asshole to prospective parents or friends of same. In fact, it just taints the cause for all the decent ones who devote their lives to ensuring pets end up in loving homes instead of shithole shelters. I have never really stepped foot into a Petco until today when I decided to bring my dog to get her nails trimmed. For some weird reason, my dog decided that she did not want me to get anywhere near her paws. Nail trimmings here are just $10, which is pretty reasonable compared to the price range of $15-22 at other places I called. The lady I spoke to on the phone let me know that I had to bring in proof of her rabies vaccination, and told me to avoid coming in on Saturdays because it's very very very busy. Got there in the afternoon, the people that work in the grooming area are very nice and took care of my babydoll immediately. It took literally 2 minutes I would say to get her nails all trimmed.. it almost seemed like she enjoyed it. I should have came here earlier because my experience was literally as good as it gets. In and out in a total of 10 minutes! On top of that, I've read a bunch of horror stories about dogs having horrible experiences at Petco/Petsmart and coming out bleeding and a completely different dog! This was definitely not the case at this Petco, and I think I just found my go-to nail trimming spot! read more

This is one of the better Petco's I've been to. There's one on Hamilton right across the street from the house and I literally drive five minutes down the street to hit this one. The one across the street is dirty, never has neat or stocked shelves, and the employees are high school kids who don't know a thing about pets, nor could they care less about your needs. This place has a clean appearance, friendly, knowledgable staff, and always has good deals on pet stuff like beds and toys. The other day i picked up a big pet bed for $22 and some tennis balls for $0.65 a piece. The guy at the checkout was cool and rang me up quickly, reminding me that I have a Petco PALS card. Review for Grooming Department I have a German Shepherd. He's big but nice. He needs a professional because mommy can't get his undercoat out. I had a very good experience with a Petco in Chino California when I went to visit my mom...unfortunately, Chino's really the place to go for grooming. When I picked him up from my local Petco, he was damp and his coat smelled like a shampoo bottle - which means, he wasn't rinsed properly. Toenails were not clipped (and I made sure when he was little to train him to allow people to clip his toes). NOT HAPPY. I had to go home a rinse him myself. The store manager needs to give the employees a refresher course in sales and customer service. I tried to buy fish today but the aquarium lights were off. When I asked to have them turned on, I was told "no, it causes algae to grow". I told her I needed to see the fish before I buy them. She turned on a light to one group of tanks and when we picked the first of several fish we wanted, she told us to wait and then never returned. Unbelievable. I would have walked out but I promised my daughter she could get a few fish. We then went and found another very helpful employee and he turned all the lights as well as give us some very helpful tips. read more

The humane society was quite serious in screening the prospective adopters...There was some crazy bitch who asked for a feral cat, one who would be able to be outside as well as inside. The outlandish questions this idiot asked the poor lady running the adoptions was abominable..Do your research you f'ing whore and take your five kids you had sticking there undisciplined hands in the cages of the cat I eventually adopted home and delouse them...She really pissed me off.. But I digress.. The humane society people made me wait twenty minutes to view the cats. I understood because they were trying to weed out the psychos from the people who really wanted to care for a beautiful animal. I was immediately enamored with "Finnigan", a domestic short hair who was seriously the LARGEST MAMMA JAMMA of a cat I have ever seen...He is beautiful though...We met and I knew right away, that we were supposed to meet each other. The people at the humane society were so caring and involved and really cared about the well being.. Overall, I couldn't be happier, I love (insert cat name here, I have to change the name, seriously, finnigan....stop smoking crack people), and I can't wait to get to know him better... Thelma is a POM guru. The little pomeranian had matted coat and overgrown mane. Thelma lovingly shaped this little pistol into a mini lion but not too bare on his body. He was the hit of the store as he pranced about. Yippee! read more

I am a big fan of the El Paseo PetCo's grooming. I have many foster dogs come thru my house and bring them all there for their beauty treatments before a pet fair or in anticipation of meeting a potential adopter. The groomers are so great -seems like each one of the fosters has some special skin issue or fear, and they listen and treat them as individuals. I'll never forget when I brought a scared girl named Minnie there. The groomer sat on the floor with her until she felt safe. Besides the reasons above, I love that an appointment means an appointment, and that my dogs don't sit in a kennel all day. Thanks so much! read more

Bought a large bag of pet food that came with a coupon. Asked the cashier for a copy of my receipt and was told I don't know how to do it. Called a co-worker over and her brilliant response was: it cannot be done. I've had similar issues with cashiers at different locations. I've been taking our dog to Pooch since he was a few months old fairly regularly. He's a large puppy with a lot of energy. His experience at Pooch depends on who is working there. There are some days that he is able to play all day, but a good portion of the time I'm told he gets put on "time out" because he's too rough. Well I spend a good portion of my day checking the webcam to see how he's playing and most of the time he's playing just as rough as the other big dogs....so why is it that he keeps getting put on time out? Based on what I see, I think that a lot of the employees are too lazy to try to work with him to help the situation, and instead find "time out" an easier option. I also thought that the prices were reasonable until taking him to the Petsmart daycare in LA, where they only charged $22 for the drop in rate, (and he wasn't put on time out ONCE).... We take him here out of location convenience, but at this point I'm trying out new options. Yes, he's an overly playful, large puppy, but he's never been aggressive, and just needs some staff members with patience and the willingness to do their jobs. read more
