Fine. Pretty good service (couple errors/forgotten items). Extremely warm, cozy, spirited atmosphere on a winter evening in early December. Tables so close together I could probably have stolen a frite from my neighbor's plate unnoticed. Too tight, --under 1 foot clearance between tables. With a coat on I was terrified that I was going to knock over my neighbor's wine slipping into my seat. Our conversation was slightly impeded because I could hear every word of the conversations on either side, though they weren't speaking much either because of the tight proximity. There was a squalling baby that cried for on and off, and that was a bummer, but I blame the parents for not standing up with the poor, fussy baby, not Petit Louis, obviously. Food was fine. A bit ordinary, if I'm honest. Had a 6 pm reservation on a Tuesday when coq au vin is the plat du jour and they were sold out. No apology. The reason we went that night was coq au vin. Seems like poor planning. Wound up ordering lamb. It was minuscule but well-salted little tidbit of meat with a tiny bit of potato underneath -- au gratin, I think --marooned on a big empty white plate. Not big on presentation. Maybe it was an accident and unusually underportioned but I and my dinner companion laughed at how teeny it was. I handed him a small bite to taste and he said "delicious, but there goes half your meal!" They forgot my haricots verts, ordered a la carte, which when arrived were maybe steamed or boiled in salted water and nothing else. While I'm a fan of simplicity, a little squirt of lemon, a curl of lemon zest, a drizzle of butter, or some black pepper, even, would have gone a long way. My wine was fine. All two ounces of it. Expensive for two with one glass of wine each .... I just didn't think it was quite worth it. I'm hoping it was just bad luck. The upside: they had Lillet blanc on hand which is one of my favorite aperitifs and it was served with a nice swath in of lemon peel. I'd give it 3.5 stars if I were feeling generous. read more

This review is long overdue. My husband and I have been coming here for six years - it started off as a birthday tradition but turned into something that happens once a quarter or more. The space is welcoming, the perfect mix of not too bright but not so dark you can't read the menu. Staff is *always* friendly and knowledgeable. No uninspired/lackluster staff that I've seen. That might be the best part...they seem passionate about the food and it shows when they describe the specials. They have a sommelier who will help with wine pairings, and their bartenders make great cocktails and mock tails. Their food is exceptional, and consistent. We love the steak frites, croque monsier, and foie gras. We usually order one of the specials and they're always delicious, too. Run, don't walk, if you've never been here! read more

I get the fact that they are trying to make hay as the sun shines with regard to seating as many people as possible before the weather turns, but they really missed the mark last night. I going to guess that with the two dozen+ outside tables in the parking lot, plus 50% capacity in the DR, they were easily well past the ability of the kitchen to execute. My frisee salad and canard confit were both lamentable. I have never seen such a sorry leg of duck which was near inedible, There might have been 4 or 5 slices of potato accompanying it. C'mon. The Apple tarte was just plain awful and was as loose an interpretation of a tarte imaginable, neither one of us finished it. The Gigondas was very good and well-priced. The house wine, which is usually a very good Cotes du Rhone was barely serviceable, not sure what has happened as this was always reliable....and $20 for a 4-5 oz pour of non vintage mediocre Roederer is a little ballsy. The waiter was OK given the circumstances, but was clearly a little stressed with all the activity. Last, this wine list is so binary. We shouldn't have to choose from either a generic supermarket Bordeaux or a classified Medoc. We have been to Petit Louis many times before and we went last night and it was really not the best! It was like the kitchen was dialing it in. I had the fois gras paired with sweet wine and that was great my partner had the crevette beignets and it was like we were at Ruby Tuesday's. Deep fried and soggy. For my main, I had the sweetbreads and the came half cooked and greasy but with with ribbons of raw flour. As you know... sweetbreads are delicate. They were poorly cooked and underwhelming. Dry and tasteless on a bed of mushrooms. No brandy cream sauce or glaze. Just really underwhelming and poorly cooked. As a French person who knows French food, I think this place is underwhelming and reliant on there location in the glitzy Roland park area. I've never had french cuisine until my advisor brought me there after I graduate from John Hopkin Univerity. My previous impression before visiting Petit Louis is that French food is super expensive, then I wast told by the French people that they also think the French food in the States is expensive (not like what is priced in France!). If you are afraid of the expensive prices in B'more downtown Inner Harbour, my French friends told me Petit Louis is not just authentic, but also adequate in price --- you would pay for 2x or 3x the money if you get the same food in the Inner Harbour (and with less quality). Okay based on my French friends suggestions, I am giving a 5-star since all of them suggested this place! I'm reviewing Petit Louis just in case I forget to visit it again. If you are really afraid of the price, try their Prix Fixe that is a $29 lunch! My personal story is that I thought some spices was corn pepper, but they told me it's not that at all... I treated my daughter for a birthday lunch today and we had an amazing time. The mussels and the onion soup starters were amazing. She had a shrimp entree and I had the pan seared Salmon.She was extremely pleased and my Salmon was cooked to perfection as I ordered it med rare. The service was on point throughout the meal.As I have spent time as a young man as a server in 5 star restaurants in Baltimore . I can honestly say that Petit Louis Bistro is well worth your time . Came here for Valentine's Day and it was the perfect date night spot! We got a super cozy table and our server was awesome. Super attentive, but not too overbearing where we felt bothered at all. We started off with the escargots and onion soup - I can definitely see why the onion soup is one of their signature dishes! Super rich and cheesy. The escargots were really good and the bread was able to absorb all that delicious butter and juice in the pan. For entrees, we got the steak frites and magret de canard. Both were *chef's kiss* - perfectly cooked and the flavors all came through and more. We both wiped our plates clean. Almost didn't have room for dessert, but we couldn't resist the tarte au citron and chocolate mousse. The mousse was super rich and chocolatey, which paired well with the tart since it helped cut through the richness. Definitely would love to return here for another special occasion! read more

No so sure what happened. I ordered the duck breast, and the wonderful waiter asked how I wanted it cooked; I said medium rare, of course, because how else would you order duck breast? It came out with about an eighth of an inch cooked all-around, with the inside raw, like you would receive sushi-grade Ahi tuna. I should have returned it and I didn't (my fault). The menu says it is served with a brown butter squash puree, which was the highlight, but there was only a schmear across the plate, maybe a tablespoon, almost as a decoration. My wife ordered the trout, which you could tell (just by looking at it) that it was way overcooked. It was. She asked to return it and it was very gracefully received... the new one was delivered to the table and it was cooked excellently. However, she said it was extremely bland, gave me a bite, and it was pretty flavorless. She ate it. This was Friday night at 7pm and the restaurant was well occupied, but that is no excuse. My family of four was having a small celebration Monday night and spent $160 for dinner (this includes 2 kids and 2 adults). We chose carry out and live in Towson. I hope the folks at Petit Louis are listening - until you choose better packaging we will not be back and will dissuade friends and family from carry out as an option too. Your choice to use a fiber type container for all meals is a poor one. I'm guessing it's based on a desire to appear environmentally friendly but those containers can't be recycled in our area. Worse still is that they were really soggy with food moisture and made the whole meal unappealing. I was shocked to see my daughter's mussel appetizer in the fiber type container and then wrapped with plastic - really negates any green message, if that's what you're going for. Plus, unwrapping it was a mess! For such high value food we expect higher value containers which I have seen and so know they're on the market. Dined there on 11/01/22 for my daughter's Birthday. Called the day before and asked if they could make a cake. Because it was such short notice they said they could not accommodate us, but told me I could bring a cake and they could bring it out to our table. I agreed and bought an expensive cake and kept it at our table until we were finished eating. When the waiter came he told us they can bring it out with the candles that I had provided. He also said they would take it back to the kitchen and slice it. There were 5 of us and he told us they charge 2 dollars a plate for labor to do this! We spent hundreds of dollars there! When it was time to go, the waiter said that the cake must have shifted and he would have to put it in another container. cakes do not shift on their own! He brought the cake back in 2 containers like you would buy rotisserie chickens. The cake was smashed. As far as our meal went, I ordered a steak well done and it was red inside, They forgot my green beans and I received them when I was almost finished with my meal. This place is overrated. Absolutely fabulous vibe and décor, they even have a zinc bar. You feel transported to France as you step in. The art, the paint on the wall, the furniture. The menu is mostly classic French and it's done perfectly. Every dish we had on two separate visits was spot on. The wine list is carefully chosen to compliment the dishes. Most of the wines are French and are reasonably priced. There are a few you can order to step it up if you please. I'll focus on one in particular which I love to order in France, it's the classic French onion soup. This one had two small slices of baguette inside it (perfect and classic), melted gruyere on top and run under the broiler until it had some tan and brown flecks. In other words, just melted enough to get that lovely caramelization but no burning. The cheese overflowed over the side of the bowl so you of course want to pick off the bits on the side. The onion soup itself had a good consistency and plenty of onions inside it, although they could have used perhaps slightly more caramelization. The broth was medium rich, and well balanced. Am I obsessive about the details? Yes, but you want your chef to be the same. And in this restaurant, he is. read more

Petit Louis, please don't ever change. You're a Baltimore institution and a mainstay for anyone who craves a true taste of Paris. Went here tonight with hubby just a few days after trying out some other new French restaurant on the Baltimore food scene and being so disappointed that I had to come to Petit Louis just to remind myself what good French food was. For Restaurant Week, Petit Louis really provides a good value. Escargot, grilled lamb steak and a spiced almond financier, all for $35. All flawlessly, unpretentiously prepared. The escargot were rich, buttery, garlicky with a kick of lemon and herbs, and there was plenty of the brown butter sauce to sop up with bread. The lamb steak was tender, juicy and well-seasoned with a generous pat of herbed butter. The almond financier had a delicate finesse of flavors that I really enjoyed (hubby had the opera torte, which if you're a chocolate lover would be a better choice). The lamb steak portion was so generous that we had to ask for it to be packed to go, which they promptly did and brought back to the table. Can't wait to dig into it tomorrow! The ambiance here is old-world, traditional and charming, but the service is warm, friendly and professional. And the food is classic, soul-satisfying, French bistro perfection. Small salad dinners, restaurant week prix fixe, the celebration dinner with a special wine, visits with my awesome date (same one for 20+ years), work colleagues, visiting family... M. Came here for lunch to celebrate a friend's birthday. We were one of the first to arrive at the restaurant since we had an earlier reservation but it quickly filled up and became more lively. The four stars is primarily for the good service because the food was about average. The waiter was helpful, attentive and food came out without much wait. The escargot flavor was good but the texture was too tough/overcooked. I ordered the duck breast which was done well but the foie gras portion of the dish was flavorless. My husband took me here to celebrate my birthday and I can't believe I haven't been here before! Nestled away in a small shopping center in Roland Park, they have on-site parking but it was full when we arrived. We were able to find street parking in the nearby neighborhood and had a short walk over to the restaurants. We were greeted quickly and seated in a cozy corner booth. Our server was fantastic - had great energy, very kind and knowledgable. I ordered the escargot to start and scallops for my main dish and my husband ordered the cucumber salad to start and the steak frites for dinner. Everything was cooked well and delicious (probably tons of butter, but hey, we are celebrating!) They ran out of creme brulee which was a bummer, so I ordered the fresh fruit tart for dessert. I was treated to a birthday dinner here in April and it was one of the best meals I've ever had. This evening, a friend was visiting from NYC and I wanted her to have a memorable dinner, so I decided to take her to Petit Louis. What a disappointment! We were served cold and dry mussels and cold pommes frites. I sent both back, and had to send the mussels back a second time. They reheated the mussels and served them again, they were overcooked and scorching the second and third time around! It was unbelievable. I was embarrassed to have brought my friend here. This place has been on my list for years and this post is incredibly overdue. I finally decided to go for restaurant week. Baltimore does an amazing restaurant week twice a year; about 50 places offer three courses for about $30. It is a great option for getting into restaurants that might be a little expensive - at least for my budget. I must say, as with any popular hot spot during restaurant week, the place was busy. We were a few minutes late for our reservation, but still had to wait a few moments at the bar before we were seated. Petit Louis Bistro is an excellent Formeman Wolf Restaurant tucked into a quiet corner in Roland Park. You will notice the french theme immediately when you are greeted with a warm "Bonsoir mes demoiselles!". I imagine anyone with a tiny bit of french language skills could have carried on an entire conversation. I just loved the host, especially when he put up with me asking to change seats to sit closer to the glowing wood burning fire. The term bistro does not do this place justice. The food and the atmosphere is classy and sophisticated. We started with warm, fresh baked bread and choices of butter. I love bread and butter, so it was tough to say no when they offered us a second roll - but I was determine to enjoy all three of my courses. Plus, the wine pairing let me have wonderful wines that were not offered by the glass. For hors d'oeuvres, we had with Aubergines Croquantes - a crispy eggplant napoleon with tomato and chèvre. It was delectable. I didn't even notice the olives (which I normally can't tolerate) until I was half way finished. The salty addition only enhanced all the flavors. My crisp white wine from Alsace highlighted the sweet eggplant and rich cheese. Although, come on now - what doesn't get better with a little goat cheese?? My good friend enjoyed the Rilliettes; a generously sized ground duck dish that was very rich and creamy. It had a nice bright salad and crunch toasted bread to accompany it. Not something I would normally have ordered, but definitely delectable... For the entree, I ordered the salmon - grilled to a perfect medium rare and served over a pomme puree with beurre rouge (which basically means extra good mashed potatoes with yummy red butter sauce). It doesn't hurt that I was drinking a light-bodied Pinot Noir, the silky textures, and berries and warm spices in the wine set off the sweet, fatty fish. (I can talk Pinor Noir all day... Have I mentioned that's my favorite wine?). I also got a few bites of the braised veal with root vegetables - tender and robust. Although, both of us were coveting the pomme frites a few tables over. I wish I could do justice in describing the desert course. But, it was a few weeks ago and I had a few glasses of wine. We shared the gorgeous dark chocolate Pot de Creme and a creamy fresh mango cake style dessert. Both creating a fitting end to a delicious french meal. I apologize for no pictures. It didn't occur to me to take any while I was enjoying my meal; I was too focused on enjoying everything... I cannot wait to go back, even if only for a glass of wine and a cheese plate. read more

We had reservations during restaurant week but the night of the reservation my wife was stuck in the operating room. I knew from resy no later reservation times were available but called to see if they could push our reservation back to 9pm (latest reservation possible). Despite being completely booked on a incredibly busy night they offered to fit us in at 9pm and even keep the kitchen open if we were going to get there late. In the end we couldn't make it but really appreciate how accommodating they were. A few days later we made it to Petit Louis. The three course dinner and wine pairing was wonderful! The wine paring complemented the food so well! It was our first time visiting but we are looking forward to our next visit! read more
