I suspect the original owner/chef has turned over the operation to children who aren't as interested in cooking as keeping the business going. As a local, this is one of the "go to" places on our list. Always good food and pleasant service. This most recent experience at Petra has prompted me to join yelp. The service was by a young waitress who was nice enough but had to be flagged down to refill glasses or order. It took about a half an hour to bring our food after we ordered. I ordered the zatar bread appetizer which tasted like spice and dust put on top of a piece of pita. I sent it back but was still charged for it. The greek salad was okay but it tasted like anything I could've thrown together myself. The falafel bites were bitter tasting. The combo platter was disappointing but not terrible. There are better greek/mediterranean food joints in Monterey and I would recommend going to any of those over this one. The only reason that this restaurant is getting three stars is because of our previous experiences in which we experienced good food and service. read more

My husband & I had lunch here. The server was very pleasant and responsive. We often get ice in our water even though we ask for no ice. This one got it right! The falafel was among the best we've ever had, and we try a lot of them. The lentil soup was tasty, but not as thick as I like. The sides of hummus and tabbouleh were a nice surprise and very yummy. The biggest surprise was the Turkish coffee! So very tasty! I usually like soy creamer in my coffee but this was great as is. I don't understand why a few reviewers felt compelled to complain about the decor. The place was clean, bright and comfortable. The only drawback was the hummus and tabbouleh in plastic cups. She took my order I asked her the difference between j lore Pinot noir and mirasou Pinot and she said "there really is no difference the j lohr is the jlohr and the Mirasouu is the mirasouu. God!! Then she brought my plate and I said where is the pita and she looked at my plate like it was there. I had to ask twice for water after she passed my table four times and she had four tables so She wasn't busy. I sat for 10 mins with dirty plates waiting for her to pickup the check. I paid and then privately told her I had a few things. I said she never came to check on my meal-she just kept starring at me as I told her my lamb was tough and cold. A very special something different to thoroughly enjoy, Petra Restaurant is a lovely place to savor traditional Mediterranean cuisine, Although they serve traditional favorites including Tabouli and Greek salads, Humus and Babaganoush dips, Gyros and several delicious cubed and ground meat kabobs, my favorite remains the Roasted Half Chicken prepared with sauteed onions and Sumac spice,a very savory dish. Delicous food, comfortable dining room with large windows and fireplace in downtown Pacific Grove. This is a family run Jordanian restaurant with many choices from neighboring regions. I always take out-of-town guests here for a great "home cooked" tasting meal. My eighteen year old nephew loves this place. The food is very flavorful but not spicy hot. The lentil soup is wonderful, falafels are the freshest ones I've ever tasted (the owner tells me she grinds the flour fresh every day, it tastes it), grilled chicken sandwich, hummus, Greek salad, and roasted chicken. Also, their French fries are probably the best around here. Try the Turkish coffee for something different. My only complaint is that the pita bread can be dry and I wish there were more desserts. I love mediterranean food and want to see more on the menu. Speaking of the menu, it is small but everything is well executed and there are very good portion sizes. The food here is edible, but my experience was truly distasteful! I broke a tooth on an olive. I didn't blame the restaurant, but I did ask them to file a claim with their insurance company, and they refused. It cost me $6,000 in dental bills, and after I met with the owner and asked for the insurance claim, they didn't even have the courtesy to respond. I wouldn't go there again for any money, and I hope everyone avoids this place. They brag about being part of the community, but that certainly wasn't my experience. read more

I was tired of going out and getting mediocre food at high prices if you feel the same way time to go to Petra. My wife and I had dinner there this evening hoping we could find a place that has great food, wonderful service and although not extremely romantic you can have a conversation because it is not a noisy place. Then to top it off we had wine, appetizers, entrees, dessert and turkish coffee and with a generous tip was about $35/person. If you just had an entree it is less than $25/person. My Valentine and I chose Petra for our "going out" dinner on Valentine's day. I would summarize our experience as just "all right," with little to become exited about. We ordered combination plates, with mixed results. Some of it was excellent, some of it lacking in both style and flavor. Menu prices were moderate, and service friendly but definitely lacking in professionalism. I don't think Petra is a place to get excited about. This was our third visit to the restaurant, and, over-all, especially for the occasion, we were somewhat disappointed. I was at this place about 2 months ago. I got my food to go b/c I was alone. While waiting for the food, I talked with the owner. Nice, nice person. I had previously lived in Jordan for 2 years. I enjoyed looking at his walls of pictures (Petra, etc). The food was like I was in Jordan again. Excellent food. Am going back to PG this week-end and taking 4 family members with me. We ate here several years ago and we thought it was just ok but after reading all the great reviews, we decided to try it again. Our waitress spoke about 20 words the entire meal and never checked in after the meal was delivered. Maybe she was new and nervous? Unfortunately, it came across as snotty. The wine was served in tiny little skinny glasses which always irritates me. The salad was good with several veggies and goat cheese. The pita bread was dry and tasteless. I ordered the chicken kabob. Very dry and and boring. No sauce or seasoning that I could taste. I ate only half, enough to fill my stomach a bit. My husband had the salmon and loved it but tasted my kabob and offered to share his meal with me. We left without a word from the waitress while delivering the bill or returning it. As we exited the building, someone yelled out to "have a nice night" but neither of us was in the mood, while already outside, to turn around and see who was speaking. That's it! I don't know what happened but we sure had a different experience than most of those in the reviews. read more
