Everytime I come here, the ppl are always polite and friendly, abet a bit stretched thin.

I think PetsMart gets a bad rep just being a chain store that doesn't particularly specialize. Pros: The cashier by the door was AWESOME. He greeted me and immediately asked if I needed help on my way in. That's good customer service. He was also very friendly and helpful when I wanted to price match a competitor. Cons: The fish section is a little whack. No, Denison Barbs cannot fit into a 29 gallon, especially since they're a very social schooling fish that needs more than 5-6 to be happy. I'd say you're better off with a 55 gallon - and that's if they're the only occupants. The tanks had a bunch of fish with ich and a few dead ones that have been there for a while. I can tell because the filter has pulled them in, and their friends have been eating their remnants. Want a better fish store? Ultimate aquarium is a good stop for saltwater - their freshwater is decent but I also see dead bodies and ich. If you don't mind driving, head to Ocean Aquarium in San Francisco or Neptune Aquatics in Milpitas. Somewhat Redeeming: The prices here are pretty expensive. A good rule of thumb is to ALWAYS price match with their online price... they tend to like to jack up the price for those who don't do their homework. My dog got sprayed by a wandering skunk so I had to get skunk shampoo - "on sale" here for 16.99 from 18.99. Online? 8.99 for the exact same thing... Luckily price matching isn't tough. They won't price match Amazon, but usually their online price (or PetCo's) is close. read more

I dropped off a completely adorable pup, and you give me back a baby Frankenstein? She was brought in to get her nails trimmed and ground down, teeth brushed, and a professional bath. The guy said, "Did you want to do a little more of a trim around her face?" Well, you know what, I just trimmed around her face, but okay...a tiny bit more won't hurt. Trim? No, you chopped her hair all different lengths and cut her bangs super short. Yet, you left her looking like she has a huge, fluffy beard! You trimmed her body all over, which I did not ask for, thus cutting off all of her black tips of hair! To top it off, you didn't even put a ribbon on her, which was supposed to come with the f'cking bath! You guys did such a heinous job, I didn't even want to say a word about what an ugly ass job you did, for fear it would only piss me off all the more and I would ream you with words of ugliness to match the cut you gave my pup! Right now, my pup knows how ugly you made her! She has been super quiet and sad, since I've picked her up! She is mopey, because she knows how incredibly unattractive you have made her! Now, I am going to have to fix the ugly mess you made, by further trimming her hair and salvaging any kind of cuteness she has left!!! I don't even recognize my puppy, right now! My toddler is in a phase where he stuffs things into bags and backpacks (and who knows where else?!) - cute, but not when we lose important things like dog collars with identifying tags. So of course today our beloved dog was visiting our friends' home, escaped, and had no tags. Luckily, some kind neighbors took him in until we returned, and our dog is okay. Whew. Our usual pet supply store (Togs for Dogs) doesn't make tags or have the kind of collar we use, so it was time to head to Petsmart - stat! Petsmart stopped carrying the kind of collar our dog normally wears (doh! where did our kid hide the damn thing?!), but a Petsmart employee helped me find the last one of the kind - on clearance in a not-so-manly color. Good enough. Collar - check. I engraved a new tag for him - check. The friendly cashier plied him with treats - LOTS of treats. Happy dog and deadly canine gas for the night - check. read more

WHY DO YOU EXIST? That is my question. I thought the intentions of petsmart were to be smart and help with your pet. Apparently I was wrong.. SURPRISE SURPRISE. I was in there for over an hr looking confused as FCK. And no one helps me. I finall decided enough was enough! My baby wasn't cooperating with his leash(he's a chicken and refused to walk), He laid a fat one on the floor&MY BOOTS, and I picked out a few things but was contemplating on whether I should pay for this rude service. I decided to go to the register and ASK FOR HELP MYSELF. The guy at the counter looks at me like I was holding up the line. He sees me struggling with the leash, and cart and decides to rush me out. The lady behind me was pissed that her pup wanted to play with mine. Is my pup too ugly for your baby? rude. So the cashier goes "ILL GET SOMEONE TO HELP YOU, STAND OVER THERE!" I was really about to throw my pups shiet at someone. The guy who finally helps me out saves petsmarts life. Although I asked for suggestions on busy treats and he ended up giving me toys, he still tried. TOGS FOR DOGS has nicer employees, customers. REAL dog lovers yenno? Not these bizzles that work minimum wage trying to get by w/ sh*t work to pay off their rent. Maybe if they're nicer, people would actually try and shop there a bit more. DEADTOWN. read more

My last two reviews were five stars but... it's sad to see this place has gone way downhill since the Homeless Cat Network is no longer taking care of the cat adoption area. I knew HCN did a great job but you don't quite realize HOW much they made a difference until they weren't there anymore. Tonya did an amazing job of organizing and coordinating and scheduling volunteers who regularly came to care for those kitties' cages like clockwork. Every one of the volunteers was dedicated and loved cats and did an amazing job. But the last time I went in, I saw the cat condo looked terrible, with litter all over the place (little tip, petsmart: do not use clumping gray litter, it looks horrible in the display windows and gets all over... plus it makes you guys look super cheap). HCN volunteers used to shell out good money for the kitties to get the best litter (World's Best). They absolutely pampered the cats and took great care of them, regularly, for years. Now that they're gone, I've heard complaints that the cats are unhappy and crying, which doesn't surprise me when the litter looks so bad. The people who work here are all nice, but it's the corporation I have an issue with. Petsmart corporate was very interested in volume and wanted HCN to have cats adopted quickly so they can brag about the number of cats they get adopted. They felt that HCN was taking too long to get cats adopted and were against the idea of home visits!!! It's ironic that they gave HCN the boot when they wanted their adoption numbers to go up. They really shot themselves in the feet with that move, because with the horrible looking condition of the condos and the unhappiness of the cats that have to live in them, they just made it a whole lot HARDER to get someone interested in adopting a single cat!!! I recently heard that Petsmart was CONTINUING to ask customers for donations to the Homeless Cat Network, even though HCN got the boot over 2 months ago!!! WTF, seriously??? I don't know if Petsmart is aware of the typical profile of a Cat Lady. It is usually someone with a huge heart, who is barely able to pay their rent (esp. here in the bay area), because they spend so damn much time and money doing what they can to take care of cats in need. That was the last straw for HCN. I hope whatever person who instigated that bad move is well aware of how crappy the place looks now, and what a turnoff it is for the customers. I used to come here all the time when HCN did the fairs, and I'd buy cat food, litter and kitty treats here, but have a bad feeling about the place now that I saw the condition of the cat condos. I would think Petsmart could handle things a little better than they have. read more

Crappiest store EVER! Came here to get a free Halloween photo and treat bag, and the cashier guy said I have to buy a frame for the free photo. The Ad clearly said FREE PHOTO and OPTIONAL frame for $7.99. There were no background posterboard or anything! Then he said its stops at 3pm when it was still 2p! Luckily, I zipped down to Daly City Store, and even though photo booth stopped half an hour ago, they still were nice to accommodate the photo & even gave my dog a big bag of treats!!! I'll NEVER go to San Mateo store again! Go to Daly City or San Carlos! It's only few minutes away but it's worth it! Customer Service, Trainers AND hospitality is SSOOO MUCH BETTER THERE!!! read more

You know I've always had stellar customer service at this location. Plus they offer great deals on their pet food. My favorite thing is to swing by the animal displays and look at all the critters. And!!! I like to watch the dogs get groomed in the back. There are restrooms located in the left rear of the store. Looks like they have dog classes on the weekends located in the front of the store. Ample parking along the side. Good times for your furry ones. read more

What a terrible store. If I could give 0 stars I would. They refuse to let you call to see if they have something in stock. They force customers to drive to their store (even in these Covid times). After driving 45 minutes each way, they were out of the prescription dog food I needed. David (at the front cash register) and James (store leader) could not have cared less. They were both aware that they didn't answer the phone to help customers and just said cheerily, "sorry :)". When I said it was extremely frustrating to have to drive to the store and go in, they just said, "yeah, oh well", "yep, that's how we do it". Not to mention they sell Beta fish (cruelty in a cup) despite numerous recent articles of the cruel trade and circumstances with Beta fish. PETSMART DOESN'T CARE about animals or customers.. just give them your money. David and James - you should work for TSA at airports. You are terrible at customer service!!! read more

Ordering online and doing curbside pickup is the way to go. I avoid the lines and I always get what I want.

I have been a store manager for years, and have always worked in customer service in one way shape or form, so I very easily recognize and appreciate when I see someone going above and beyond their company core competencies. Ms Marjorie at the el Camino store knows how to give exceptional customer service, and petsmart coorporate offices need to recognize and appreciate what an absolute gem she is, and how much of a positive impact she has on her customers. These are the types of employees that will propel your company forward with integrity and purpose! Give this woman a promotion and a raise before someone steals her away!! I would be delighted to have her on my team and she will forever have a job immediately if she ever decides she needs a change of scenery!! She definitely earned it, and I truly believe that any employee you have going forward will do well learning from her!! She already leads by example and also is so considerate and kind! She stayed so much later after they closed to make sure that I was able to leave with everything I wanted to purchase (the register system crashed and wouldn't turn back on for a while) and helped me carry out snd pack up my car with the things I purchased they literally weigh as much as she does lol. I had a terrible experienced with the salon. I brought my dog here to make her feel fresh and pretty but the groomer didn't do a good job. In fact I have to bring my dog to the ER because her ears got irritated. My dog is now taking 4 pills 2x/day and has to wear a cone for 2 weeks. Lauren is not a groomer! I hope you will try to find another job for yourself. Rating for you is 0! read more

I dropped my dog off for a bath and haircut. I showed the groomer photos of what I wanted and told her to keep the hair on the long side, especially around my dogs face. When I picked up my dog, he had been completely shaven. There are spots were it was shaved down to the skin. Needless to say, he looks horrible. I will never go back to Petsmart grooming! read more

I have rented their carpet cleaner for years. Yesterday, Wyatt, their manager, kept my deposit because I didn't clean the bottom ( where the wheels are) . I cleaned everything and brought it back in 1 day. I have spent thousands of dollars at this Pet Smart. I feel angry and cheated that this boy of a manager decided to keep my deposit. I have never been told I have to clean the bottom of the rug cleaner!! Pet Smart in San Mateo, you suck!! Your selves are never stocked, yet I alway gave you my business. No more. 3/5 stars because this place is either hit or miss. first time we came for a vet visit because of my dog having a lesion and weird behavior as well as red eyes. the vet we saw reassured us it was due to age and the lesion would take care of itself and our dog was fine. we came back for a check up a couple weeks later and suddenly this vet looked at us as if we weren't considerate of our dogs quality of life. told us the dog was under stress based on redness in eyes and anxious behavior. alarmed us about surgery needed for the lesion. and said the weird behavior was dementia. why this wasn't consistent between both vets i have no idea but it sure pissed me off. you must have to really advocate for your pets health and the slightest changes with some of these vets. also the girl working the front desk, Michele, has the worst customer service. everybody has their off days but every time we have come she has the worst hospitality and attitude. read more

I've been shopping here for 3 years and it's getting worse and worse as time goes by. My main issue is that they haven't been a reliable source for the cat food I normally buy. I went in to buy Wellness wet food for cats and the shelves were pretty bare. They didn't have the flavor I needed (my cats don't do too great with certain flavors) so I had to get a couple of another flavor so my cats had food for the next few days. They were also out of the litter I get. Most of the Tidy Cat varieties were out of stock that night. I went back 2 days later and the shelves were still bare but I was able to get litter thankfully. I asked one of the employees if they might have the cat food I needed in the back. She went to check but came back empty handed and said they had a delivery of stuff that came in but that they were still wrapped up so she wasn't sure if it was in there. Told me to come back in 1-2 days. She also thought it was funny which I don't even understand. I went back 2 days later again. Still nothing. Ended up getting some of the small can versions on Prime Now. Not only are they not reliable to keep their shelves stocked but after reading the other horror stories in the reviews I don't want to shop here anymore. It's just awful. read more

Had a grooming appt today for my dog. Checked in on time and then was told by the groomer, that we were scheduled with, that she had no idea when they would get to my dog and he would be kenneled until then. Groomer seemed annoyed and bothered that I even had an appt and not interested at all in grooming my dog. Confused what the point of an appt is, if it is not honored. Didn't feel right, not a place or a person I was comfortable leaving my dog with so we left. Will not be going back. Disappointing, especially since it takes so long to get an appt, and our dog is a recent rescue who needs grooming to make him more comfortable. read more

Horrible & Unacceptable conditions for the guinea pigs and hamsters they have at this store. The guinea pigs were out of water for who knows how long. Poor baby guinea pig kept biting at the water bottle spout and it was empty. The hamster tanks were very unclean and definitely unhealthy. And sadly there was one dead hamster in one of the tanks with another live hamster. The asst. team lead their (male) said he would be right over but he never came over and instead sent someone else over to assist. We asked for help and it took them about 10-15 minutes to get someone to finally come over so we could show them the hamster that died and ask why the tanks were so dirty. She said they clean them weekly but they are busy (there are only 4 customers everytime I have come in). The bedding in these tanks were brown, drenched in urine. There is no way that has been cleaned weekly. Hamsters are not to be caged together after they are 6-8 weeks and they had 4 hamsters in one small tank. I am calling to find out who the DM is to complain. Sadly this store has already dealt with some legal issues of one of their employees. If you don't have enough employees to care for animals or willing to care properly for these animals, don't have animals for sale. read more

i recently just moved from LA to SF and needed to find a new groomer for my dogs. i have been going to petsmart for YEARS, despite all the bad reviews, i have always had a pleasant experience. i called to make an appointment for my dog to get groomed and they are booked weeks in advance so i'm over here thinking like "WOW they're booked so far ahead, they have to be super good at what they do." turns out, they're just short staffed. ANYWAY, lauren did my dog's bath and haircut. i bring my dog in and usually i'm used to her appointments taking about 3-4 hours and at the one hour mark, i get a call that she's ready and again i'm shocked at how fast it was. you know those memes that have recently been going around telling petsmart to count their days? well that's exactly how i felt when i saw my dog. i asked for a teddy bear face and she came back with a mohawk. there were random long pieces up and down her neck and everything about it was completely messed up. her ears were uneven and everything about her cut was awful. her nails weren't even done properly, they were so jagged and rough and i felt so bad for my dog because i have no idea what she experienced in that God awful place. i immediately called them back and explained how awful my experience was. i have NEVER received a service this bad and half assed before. i even tipped her $10 and i wish i hadn't. the manager whom i spoke with offered me a re-do and i made it clear i will not be going back. i went to another petsmart location and had the manager of that salon fix it and thankfully she did a good job. long story short, being a dog groomer requires experience. if you lack it, please practice before you take on a job that requires you to handle other people's pets. and petsmart, PLEASE make sure you are hiring the right groomers because LAUREN clearly doesn't know how to do her job. read more

Honestly this location lacks customer service skills and knowledgeable employees they need to retrain there staff it is a pet store not an miltary encampment which they act like i will not recommend them to anyone ever worst service ever.. Its Weds. November 26, thanksgiving eve, and I am pet sitting for a friend, and the dog doesn't have a jacket. I thought I would do something nice for the dog and walk into this store. Great, coats are 40%. I grab the first one that looks like it fits. I try to find a price scanner. Well, not here. They tell me the cashier at the register can check the price. It ends up being $15 plus tax. I'm already at the register, so I end up getting it. I put it on Spot inside the store, only to hear him scream because its too tight around his neck and chokes him. Oh well. Almost as fast as I just bought it, I go back to the register for the return. No other customers are there, and the woman who just rang me up is watching the entire thing. Immediate return. Suddenly, the card that worked 60 seconds ago is unable to do the return transaction. She tried several time to scan the card and do the return, nothing works. She then gets the manager. This uptight bald guy about late 30s takes over, whom I will refer to from now on as CUEBALL because he's not wearing a name tag. So cueball takes over and eyes me with immediate suspicion. He first tries to help on the cashier's register, then she gets a line and I'm holding it up, so he moved to next register over. Fine. Whatever. CUE BALL asks what I returned, I point to the dog coat and explain, and the cashier backs me up. It didn't fit. I never walked out with it. He continues scanning the card over and over, then gives up and tries punching the numbers in. He notices my card expires last day of November. .. and blames me for having an old card. Although its still November, I pull out the brand new bank card anyway. They both have the same numbers but neither work. Which card did you use he asks me? Now even I am getting confused. CUE BALL announces, well since your card isn't working to do the return I'm going to call your bank. Say what?? I ask CUEBALL if he can't just refund the money in cash. He says he cannot do that. but can give me a merchandise credit. I announce "I will never come here again" and he says lady I am trying to help you like I have an attitude. So I say NO really, I will never come again because .. . Its not my dog, I don't own a dog, I have NO REASON to ever come again, so I have no need for a merchandise credit. WHERE IS MY REFUND please? Can't you just give me the lousy $16 and change in cash? Of course not. CUE BALL makes me wait about 15 minutes while calling my BANK, as if I'm some type of criminal. At this point I'm becoming irate because its Thanksgiving Eve and the dog is getting nervous. I let him know I plan to Yelp about this experience, and he just give me a cold stare. After waiting on hold, going through an automated process and punching in my numners. . . . .Cue ball finally gets somebody on the phone from my bank, which informs them that my card is working fine. He tells them he can't do the refund, can they refund the money, and they inform him that there is nothing they can do to refund the purchase that he can't figure out how to refund himself. Cue Ball reluctantly hands me over the cash for the item I just returned and never even walked out of the store with. WHY DIDN"T HE JUST DO THAT IN THE FIRST PLACE??!! I'm pissed, the dog is upset, customers are noticing and CUE BALL says to me "You can go now" oh really?? I told him cue ball where to go, feeling as if I were treated like a criminal who just tried to use a stolen credit card. Just to double check. . .I went to Trader Joe's right after leaving this place and $4.99 purchase of cheese worked flawlessly. I still don't know what happened, but I can assure you it wasn't anything to do with my bank or my bank card. . .Unbelievable. I guess Pet Smart is okay, but this manager guy is a douche bag, my experience most unpleasant, and I feel that he needs to go. read more

This might be the grossest PetSmart I have ever been to. It straight up stinks like dog urine. It is all around dirty and dingy. When we went many of the shelves were lacking in stock and it wasn't like the end of the day after large sales or anything. Not to mention a dog died at the groomers here not too long ago. I took Dubee here for training when I first got her and looking at her now, you can see how good the training here is. She is very well behaved, she sits when I just raise my hand over her head and lays when I bring it down to the floor. No need for words. When I walk her down the street, with no leash, she's no further than a foot away from me. I also use to bring her here, when I had more money, to get her stinky butt washed and her nails cut. They do a really good job - they get her nails shorter than I can and she always comes out smelling fresh. It was such a convenience - now I have to wash her myself in the bath at home and I barely cut her nails because I suck at it. I also have been here a lot in the past two months or so because we bought a fish tank and I've been coming, sadly, to replace my dead fish. If they die within the first two weeks you can bring them back, with your receipt, to 'exchange' them. (No comments please. I wasn't getting the hang of the whole fish thing at first. But now, 8 dead fish later, I get it.) Thanks to the workers here now my fish are living! They helped by telling me which fish are good with which fish, how many fish can go in my tank, how much water to replace and how often to replace the water - and other things that I didn't think of :) Now I'm thinking I need a new betta fish for my desk at work! read more

I took my dog to the grooming dept in November and got a bath and a nail trimming. One month later my dog starts limping because they never clipped his due claw and it had started to grow into his paw. I called and explained this and they said to come in to see if they could fix it. But possibly I would have to take him to the vet to have the claw clipped. Whatever they messed up and did not do it last time I was in. And there are special notes in the file to be careful with this claw. Anyways, they were able to clip it this time and now I will never go back. If you say your doing a service you should do it. The lead groomer said "sometimes it gets overlooked." My dog was limping because it was not done a month ago. Pisses me off read more

I went there 2 weeks ago to pick up my dog and I sawed something unacceptable! The groomer pulling down a white poodle and like strangling this dog. I told the manager what I sawed and I felt he didn't care about. After that my sister called them and he said " I sawed the video but I don't see nothing wrong" and my sister told him" so, I think the owner should see what you guys did with them dog !" He told her" ok, but have no chance for you see this video, cause it's not your dog!" So I never will come back again in this store ! I'm not sure why this Petsmart only has 3 stars because I was blown away by the customer service before I even physically entered the store. I purchased a product from the Petsmart in Daly City, and when I got home and opened the box, literally half of the parts were missing. Frankly, it's deplorable that this product was put back on the shelf and sold as new because clearly it was a return from someone who bamboozled the employees by making the product appear complete. But nonetheless I called the store and they didn't hesitate to offer me a full refund. So the next day I returned the product without any issues but no sympathy was expressed for what happened. On top of that, the Daly City location didn't have any more of the product in stock, so I left empty-handed. I was pretty disgruntled because of this, but was determined to acquire the product, so I called the Petsmart in San Mateo. Not only was the staff friendly on the phone (i.e. not being put on hold for eternity or being hung up on), but they verified the product was in stock and offered to put it on hold for me. So I drove over to this Petsmart and declared I was the one on the phone who requested the product to be put on hold. A very nice employee escorted me to the front where the product was on reserve. Unfortunately, upon viewing the product, it was an older model that was quite inferior to its replacement. Obviously, blame cannot be put on the employees for this, so I put the product back on the shelf and explained the situation. Out of nowhere this guy comes up and asks me what the problem was with the product they reserved. I explained the whole situation with the Daly City experience and how I was from SF, and he sympathized and made great efforts to check if they had any newer models in stock. After checking the warehouse to find nothing, he told me that he ordered four units of the product I wanted and they would arrive in a few days. I told him I appreciated his efforts but reiterated residing in SF, and before I could even finish he expressed more sympathy and gave me a promise I couldn't refuse if I came back and purchased the product from them. Turns out he was the branch manager and I can honestly say Petsmart should be proud to have this guy running one of their stores. In my opinion, he deserves to be a district manager because the Petsmart in Daly City could learn a thing or two from him. All in all, I had an amazing experience at this Petsmart. Every employee I interacted with was friendly and helpful, and Richard (boss man) went above and beyond to make my shopping experience one i'll remember forever. read more

As a former employee I cant say that i didnt enjoy my time there. I worked the Equine department before State Line Tack was bought out. I also trained dogs and helped in the grooming department. I have to admit that there were some girls that wouldnt ask the important questions: "is she/he scared of anything?" "allergic to anythign?" "do you want fragance shampoo?" these are the careless mistakes that some of the coworkers made.... in the year that i was there i saw maybe 2 incidents where there was alot of blood, when the quicks of the nails were cut too short and when we were grooming a dog that jumped and we cut her leg by mistake and took her immediately to our vet inside the store. alot of the fear that i saw in the dogs was mostly caused by the cage dryers. i avoided cage dryers if i saw the dog was reacting in a scared manner. and brought the dog out towel dried them and set them in the cage on a bunch of towels. i loved the manager and respected her for her work, she shows her dogs and does proffessional show clips and out of all the girls she had the most experience. but i did end up leaving the company due to management issues. but you gotta remember that every story has 2 sides to it and not everyone is at fault. read more

DO NOT GET YOUR DOG GROOMED HERE! They are rough and impatient. I paid for a puppy bath and they were awefull! They charged me for extra handling but shouldn't it be expected that she is a puppy and that she is not going to like baths. They not only charged me double but my dog was distressed and hypervenilating when I picked her up. Worst of all, her ears where not cleaned like i had asked for. If you care about the safety of your pet, do not take them to pet smart for grooming! read more

Do not support this store. They blame everything on being understaffed. The grooming department closes at random times and they aren't professional of helpful. Do yourself a favor and go to petco or pet food express. read more
