I'm going to stop going to this Petsmart. I've shopped here for many years. I literally spend hundreds of dollars here every month as I have 3 dogs and 1 cat. In the past I've had more animals to feed. Feral cats and rescue dogs. It seems like I can never use a coupon they give. I typically buy in large bulk to avoid having to go often. The coupons they give expire so quickly there is no way to use them. Today I tried to use my coupon after spending nearly $200 they said no. Well guess what petdumb...I'm done with you! This location has very pushy trainers. Any time I came in with my puppy, I was bombarded with pressure to enroll in puppy classes. I didn't succumb, but it's frustrating to try and do your shopping and have trainers and employees come and lecture me on what a horrible dog my puppy can become without puppy classes. Conveniently their puppy classes. Anyways, my pups 2 years old now, well socialized and well behaved without taking a single puppy class. Another abysmal experience is that our puppy got fleas from the grooming salon here. Didn't realize it until a week or so later, and it turned into an infestation. read more

This review is for the grooming department . Don't get me wrong the store is just fine . I have been bring my little one here to get groomed for years now , and I have never been let down. I've read some of these bad reviews for this place and it just looks like owners are a little to over protective . Dogs will be dogs and most of the time they don't stand still , especially if other dogs are in the room. The groomers here are always so sweet to me and my dog . We have a small maltipoo who can be kind of a jerk sometimes. She doesn't do that well with strangers let alone strangers who want to trim her nails, cut her hair, etc. Luckily, Petsmart has a great groomer named Carlos who really knows how to deal with Bebe and they've developed a great relationship! If it wasn't for Carlos, Bebe would look like an overgrown Yeti with 12 inch nails! Petsmart is a nice, clean, well-stocked store with VERY friendly staff. When I moved to San Mateo I was disappointed to find out there isn't a local pet store downtown. I went to Petco in Foster City for a while, but their crickets were usually on the brink of death. Petsmart gets cricket shipments in a few times a week so they're always in stock and the crickets are always the same size. Everyone who works at this Petsmart is friendly and helpful. The local Petsmart. They have everything I need for my little Yorkie. Price is not as great as Petclub, but it's VERY convenient. Convenience is everything here. I like that this place is just down on the bottom of the hill I live on. I also like that there's a Banfield (love having a vet this close by), puppy training classes (didn't go, but saw some dogs getting trained the other day and they were all so good) and a grooming service (I groom my own pup so never used it) all inside. The people are not that helpful, the place is a bit messy, there are things that can be improved. But, they are still a 4 star place in my book! read more

DO NOT EVER ADOPT A PET FROM PETSMART!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am a loyal petsmart shopper. It is the only place I purchase cat food from for my multiple cats. But I recently was won over by a cute kitten they had on display and adopted her. While the kitten certainly is still the sweetest thing, she started to show signs of sickness after 3 days. She needed an emergency vet visit by the following weekend. She was suffering from a serious bacterial infection as well as ear mites. These animals are adopted out with an assurance of medical health. While it is understandable that mistakes can be made, there should be a procedure in place to deal with things if this ends up not being the case. Petsmart in San Mateo used to adopt pets out through a local pet rescue group, but they switched about a year ago to a group out of Madera called Friends of Madera Animal Shelter. Petsmart has been very courteous but they initially said everything was out of their hands and referred me to Madera. I talked to them, left a message with a Kirsten Gross who they said was the person I should deal with and she has yet to call me back after 5 days. I called Petsmart back today ad they said maybe they could have talked to their in-house vet about giving me a complimentary visit. They of course failed to tell me this when I called 5 days earlier and it is not like you can delay medical visits for a sick pet particularly an infant. So now I am $500 in the hole for vet visits with no action on the part of Petsmart and FMAS which adopted out a sick pet. read more

The grooming salon rocks but the people at the register are dumb as a rock. Last Saturday the lady almost sliced my credit card in half because she didn't know how to use the manual cc machine, didn't know how to process a return and simply didn't scan the coupon. When two managers were called to fix her problem, she kept trying to justify her actions saying she did her job correctly. If she did, why did it take 30 minutes to purchase two items and require the assistance of 2 managers? But Ashley @ the Grooming salon is awesome. My doggy always come back happy and perfectly groomed. She understands exactly what I want and is friendly. I recommended her highly esp. if you have a maltese. Everytime he comes back he gets many compliments and looks like a puppy all over again. 5 stars for her professionalism and workmanship. read more

Never ever ever bring your dog here for grooming!!! Brought my dog here and the girl was rude. Took her more than three hours to groom. When I came after 5 she wasn't there anymore and my dog was half groomed! His head was cut into a polygon shape and his lower half is still long partially cut. They have the audacity to call me 2 months later to bring my dog back for another groom. Neeeever! The only petsmart groomers I always trust is the one near serramonte mall. Just had an excellent shopping experience... needed to have 160 lbs of cat litter pulled and loaded onto my car. Kevin was the lucky store man to do it all for me and he was helpful and friendly. I come here because it's local and convenient. All the employees know my dog and fawn over her all the time. She's always excited to be here. They also carry a very hard to find brand of dog food that I use (By Nature). I got my puppy training here and the first two collars and two leashes... (both of which she chewed to pieces). The location is tricky to get to and I've had my share of missing the correct lane and having to circle around. Getting out of there and heading back north is none too easy either. read more

Okay, this is specifically about the grooming. I have a 9 year old GSD who I've been taking to a series of groomers since the Noble Beast went under. Denise where are you? Now has done any where near the great job they did. However, I tried here and have to say we're pretty happy. On drop-off they appeared to handle her well and be respectful. They were done on schedule and called to let me know. Naturally, she was very excited to be picked up, but again, they seemed to handle her well and she did not express any hesitancy in reacting to staff there. They get a 3 because they I had to help them to her nails. She spooked them when they tried to clip her nails themselves. Not a major fault and I thought the woman did a good and efficient job with my help, but I did infer a lack of knowledge about handling dogs. So overall, the price was great, $20 less than anywhere else I've been. The dog seemed happy and well treated. The staff may not be as knowledgeable or confident as one might want. I've been coming here for years to the Grooming Salon with my cocker spaniels. I love the location while my babies are getting their grooming done I can go off to the mall and do so shopping or have lunch/dinner and get groceries at Trader Joe's. Petsmart has plenty of parking in their private lot. The store is very clean and quite. The Grooming dept is locating in the back of the store with Banfield. They are always nice and friendly. Our groomer, Cheri always has my babies on time. Thank you, Cheri for the wonderful job you do for them. The cost per cocker spaniel is $47.00. Price does vary on the breed. read more

The most knowledgeable associates that I have met regarding tropical fish. She shared her knowledge about the right way to setup fish tank - filter the water overnight before introduce fish into your tank, how much space fish needs, friendly community fish that can be raised in the same tank etc. she is not there just to sell you more stuff. Ive taken all 3 of my dogs here since they were puppies. Ive taken my German Sheperd to the Geooming department 2 & those two times he seems to always get ear infections. This is totally not acceptable! My dog should not be going through this. They should be more cautious when bathing dogs. My Maltese Poodle got the worst haircut ever there as well. Im sooo disappointed with they way they do their jobs. Not only after hearing about that incident i still took my dogs there. I will no longer be taking my dogs to this Petsmart i cant have them keep doing this to my dogs. When i spoke to the manager he responded to me so careless saying if it happened again he'd give me 50% off like what the f*ck you're kidding me right? So i want to avoid this happening to your dog. I have had good experiences here so far. It's convenient and close to Hillsdale Mall so I go there after shopping at the mall. I was happy to find a Blue White's Tree Frog there, so I bought one the other day. If you get a petsmart card, you get a pretty decent discount. I think the frog is normally 24.99 but I got it on sale for 14.99. I am also happy that they have the worms and crickets right in front of you so you can watch the salesperson put them into the bag. Therefore you know that they aren't cheating you. I have been going here lately instead of Petco in San Mateo or Pet Club (this store seems dirty). read more

It's a pet store like any other chain pet store, but I thought the space was clean and the workers were friendly. My partner was hankering for a work beta fish, and we found a wide and healthy-looking selection of the critter. I stopped to ogle the guinea pigs, which also looked like they were being looked after. It seems like PetSmart really cares for their animals before passing them on to customers. I just sent an email to customer service through the website, I'm hoping to get a resolution to my poor experience at the San Mateo store. My 9 year old was so disappointed that the associate refused to sell us the last hamster in stock because we expressed our frustration with her for making us wait over 20 minutes for it.we would have been patient and understanding had she explained and showed that she wanted to help us but it was obvious she was annoyed with us from the moment we walked in. The grooming team is very friendly, now that we have found one specific groomer in that bunch, who understands how my dog is to be groomed. Now if I can find a barber that understands me, i know I am looking at wrong places. Then why 3 stars? they still have not figured out how to open the Banfield and it has been 2 yrs. Petsmart sells fish, hamsters, birds, mice, rats, reptiles and has cats for adoption. I don't know what it is, but the store has a light stench that I don't particularly like. The live aquarium plant selection is better here, than at the Bridgepointe Petco. The aquariums sometimes have dead fish floating around, but I guess that's to be expected at any chain pet store- othewise, they're well maintained and seem clean. This one woman who works at Petsmart annoys me. She's really adamant about Petsmart savings cards. It's like, shut up already. read more

It's close by and seeing that I only have hermit crabs (but the roomies have cats) it's nice to see a bigger selection of items for them as well as more live crabs. My qualm though is that you've got several crabs of all sizes in a small place which means that getting a crab that hasn't already lost a limb (probably due to fights) is tough. I must have checked a good number before finally finding one that fully intact. I felt so bad for him since he was crammed in a very tiny shell as well and not long after bringing him home did he change shells. The rest of the store is pretty spiffy, I love perusing. I also love the set up of the hamsters with species and gender. It is pretty tough to get someone when I'm interested or have a question and oddly enough not that hard when I'm not. All that aside, it's still one of the better pet stores that I've been to. read more

I came here to purchase a hamster (they don't seem to have them at Petco anymore). I was pleased to see they had two different breeds and housed their hamsters in separate cages with signs explaining their breed and gender. It was hard to flag down someone to help me select a hamster and the member of the staff did not know how to properly handle a hamster or answer any questions about them. Good thing I came prepared (research ahead of time). If you know they have what you're looking for and you don't need any additional assistance, Petsmart is fine. Been buying our basking lamp from persmart this location for our bearded dragon and it lasted for over 4-6 mos. But for some reason lately as we bought again a PROMO same item, it busted in just less than a month for both bulbs. We had it exchanged for free worth $22+ tax .. July 1 when we have it exchanged and used 1st bulb, now it's july 23 and it's out again in a short period of time.. we didnt change the # of hours it's on for our dragon for yrs but the lifespan of the lamp doesnt last that long.. We dont know if the items they put out are old and they store the new arrivals until old items have been cleared out.. read more

PetSmart in San Mateo is horrible. Both the grooming side and vet side has gone downhill. Their management is either non existent, incompetent or totally uncaring of its customers and it's animals. The female groomer had a negative attitude from the beginning and was rude and not pleasant at all. Should not be in the customer service business. To top it off I received a call ten minutes after I dropped off my dog to come back and pick her up. They said she was barking and howling. My dog is 15 years old with one tooth and has never had a problem with a groomer before. I do think my dog just proved that she is a good judge of character. Please do yourself a favor and do not patronize the San Mateo store. I had switched to San Carlos PetSmart for vet services and they are awesome. I will now be switching grooming services to San Carlos as well. After 15 years sad to say goodbye to San Mateo but it is time!!! read more

I love this place for dog grooming. They have a express grooming which is perfect for my Mom's old dog. The get her in and out in less than two hours. I appreciate the service. My review is for the grooming department. I took my little tiny Yorkie here to get her toenails trimmed yesterday because she hates it and I had let them get too long (I know, very bad mom!). Well Mariella promised me she would be okay and had me go pay so Dixie would relax. She said many dogs are anxious when their owners are waiting anxiously - and I was anxious! I came right back from paying and Dixie was done and Mariella said she did great! And it was only like $7. Since Dixie did so well, I asked Mariella about grooming her. I explained she'll only been to the groomers once (K9 Social Club) and the groomer said Dixie was so nervous she thought in-home groom would be better for her. So I have been doing all Dixie's grooming myself. I also explained Dixie had a Liver Shunt and I was concerned about chemicals in the shampoos, etc. She said I could bring in my own Shampoo and Conditioner and they wouldn't do a flea dip or anything. And she suggested the express service so that she would get done faster. I told her I would have Dixie groomed but only if SHE groomed her. She had an appointment for today at 11 am so we booked it. Well, Mariella got Dixie done in just over an hour and the price was reasonable ($51). They used my shampoo and conditioner so no chemicals were used on her. Mariella said as long as she went slowly and talked to Dixie, she was fine. I am so happy to have found her. I am sure the other groomers there are great too, but I love Mariella and will take Dixie back to her in the future. read more

I tried to make an afternoon grooming appointment at the Daly City PetSmart, but they have nothing between 1:30 and 5:30. I checked two weeks in advance, and they just don't seem to offer grooming at these times anymore. Unfortunately, mid afternoon is the best time for me. I decided to make an appointment at the San Mateo PetSmart, which is over 20 miles away. They could accommodate me. In fact, I made an appointment for the next day. Alyssa Jang was my dog's groomer and she was very polite and attentive. She inspected my Chihuahua before the session and noticed that his skin was a bit dry. His hair is also a bit thin on the back. I believe it is color dilution alopecia, as he has had this issue all of his life. It is worse in the spring and fall, when Chihuahuas tend to shed more. She said she would use hypoallergenic shampoo and conditioner on him. Since I drove over 20 miles to get there, I wasn't about to drive back home and come back again. She said it would take about an hour or more and recommended that I go to the mall or Barnes & Nobles. She would call me when he was done. I went to the mall for about 45 minutes, got bored, and came back. He was done! She was writing up his report card and was just about to call me. Alyssa did a wonderful job with my dog. His coat looks great. He smells great. His nails were perfectly trimmed and ground. I am happy. My dog is happy. I may just bring him to the San Mateo store in the future, even if the Daly City one starts offering afternoon appointments again. The Daly City groomers were all good, but sometimes they are very busy and it can take up to 4 hours for them to finish. The San Mateo branch isn't as busy. It's easier to make a next-day appointment and they finish up in less than an hour, without cutting any corners. I highly recommend booking online. Reading the reviews, apparently one of their groomers killed a dog by strangling it to death. He was found not guilty, even though the prosecution's expert witness said it was not accidental. The jury didn't believe it. In criminal trials, there must not be any doubt. The fact that there were no witnesses or surveillance cast a shadow of doubt. This is horrible, but you can't blame the other groomers for the incident. Even PetSmart can't predict what an employee will do. All I can say is that Alyssa did an awesome job and cared for my little guy like he was her own. I now understand why this place is so empty, but I think this may be a good reason to go here for grooming. It's like when an airline has a crash or a fast food chain has food poisoning, they tend to fix these issues and pay attention to them, especially when they are corporate chains. I didn't know about this incident before I booked my appointment, and I probably wouldn't have made one had I known. But my experience was a good one, and I will come back and try to book with Alyssa again. The online booking app lets you choose your groomer. I can guarantee you that they are much more careful about hiring groomers after this incident. It's a shame it had to come to that. I feel so sorry for the people who lost their dog. I would be devastated. read more
