The service is incredibly slow........... Seating waited 10 min.. waiting for waiter to take order another 15 min, then wait for food for almost half an hour... It's lunch and the place is just half way full? And when you start to eat, waiter starts to show up and ask questions with your mouth full... I work almost directly across from this restaurant, and after over 4 years my curiosity finally got the better of me and I went to Phil Trani's with some coworkers. Some of my other coworkers who had been there before did not recommend it. I got a lunch sandwich - I think it was the pot roast? Anyhow, it ended up being a large roll in a bowl with chunks of meat all over it, covered in onions and au jus and served with a spoon- not what I expected but it wasn't bad. My other coworkers said their food was ok, no one had a bad meal but no one was impressed either - they had salads and the jambalaya. The 'side salad' served with the jambalaya was the typical bizzare middle-america-style plate of only lettuce drowned in dressing with one slice of tomato on the side. I just don't get that. The bread we had was pretty good, although it took half an hour for them to get it to us.. Besides the food being kind of 'meh', why else does this place get a two-star rating from me? The atmosphere and service were about as dead as the patrons. The dining room looked like it hadn't been updated since the 80s and we were probably the only people under 50 in there. The real killer though, was that it took us almost an hour to be served our food from the time we sat down, which was really frustrating. We were there for lunch, we are obviously people in their twenties and thirties who have jobs to return to.. we ended up having to cram down our food and run back to work and were still late getting back. I have been trying to formulate in my head what I would write about this restaurant. Other than the fact that I think anyone who is posting negative reviews is nuts. They must have this restaurant confused with some place else. If they had a room they were renting out as living space I would live there with my three cats and we would live off the calamari. Do you think they'd rent out a dining room? Would probably be cheaper than the place I have now. And my cats and I don't eat very much. Maybe there is a manager I can talk to. In any event, my boyfriend and I came here for dinner with my boss and his wife, and attorney of 50 years and the other secretary with whom I work. They suggested they take me and a guest out to dinner for my birthday. I'd gone out with them before for Thanksgiving back in 2013 and I had such a blast. This year they wanted to take both myself and my boyfriend out. We all started with a drink and the calamari. I can't remember the last time I had calamari that good. The sauces on the side were good as well. There wasn't a single calamari left on the plate. I ordered the rack of lamb with mint sauce. I take pride in my ability to cook all things meat in my own kitchen. I have made lamb before and am very good at making it. However, this lamb almost reduced me to tears. I have never in my adult life had lamb that was so succulent and juicy and tender and flavorful. And if they'd given me a tub I'd have filled it with that mint sauce and taken a bath in it. Just fabulous. The Caesar salad that came with it and the steamed vegetables were equally good. I was totally floored that such a place could be so good. My boss, his wife, and my boyfriend all had steaks. I had a bite of my boyfriend's steak and it was ALMOST as good as the lamb. It melted in my mouth. I also tried his mashed potatoes, and they left nothing to be desired. For my birthday our waitress brought me a vanilla sundae with cherry-chocolate drizzle and nuts. My boyfriend, my boss and his wife all finished the meal with coffee and I had some milk. All-in-all, it was a wonderful evening full of fabulous food and I felt very loved. Phil Trani's is the best restaurant in all of Long Beach. We have a party of 12 at least twice a week here and they always give us the best treatment. Paula Ruth and Tammy always take care of us and make sure we have calamari as soon as we come through the door. I have tried everything on the menu and can personally recommend the chicken parmigiana, the rib eye, and the chicken Marsala. I can't really find fault with Phil Trani's food - I have never had a bad meal (nor even a "meh" meal) at Trani's. In fact, my husband and I went there this evening for date night, a rare enough event that I certainly wouldn't pick someplace at which to dine that I didn't REALLY like. My favorite is the sea bass served with steamed veggies and green rice (the "green" comes from parsley and capers, with a hint of lemon; "crack-like" comes to mind), but I will happily tuck into any dish set before me. Pasta? Beautifully cooked and every sauce made with love. Pot roast? It will melt in your mouth; I would go Homer Simpson on their pot roast tucked in a loaf of their wonderful bread. The lasagna is better than my mother's; hell, it's probably better than YOUR mother's lasagna. Their beef and seafood are nicely prepared. Their antipasta is as fine as you could find in the best Italian deli. Perhaps best of all, the pours are very generous. Phil Trani's is on my "Bucket List", no doubt. So why did I mark it down a star? Half of the star is for the speed of the kitchen and service. Let me be clear - Phil and the staff are extremely friendly and courteous and competent (shouts to Paula and Ashley in particular). However, when Phil's is busy, you can spend 1/2 hour waiting for something (a course or a check). I will say that tonight was fine - Paula was bartending and serving in the bar area, but she was on top of everything. The other half of the star is because I feel like I am likely to be eaten by a grue every time I walk into the joint. The environment manages to be both poorly-lit and strangely evocative of my childhood memories of Clifton's Cafeteria. I freely admit that I am several centuries younger than the more regular regulars, and fully confident that, one of these days, I will find my great-grandmother in the dining room. She died in 1993, in case you were wondering. Perhaps the slow service (to me/us) is related; they have to service those first who might not live to pay the check otherwise. The restaurant catered a party I went to and the food was deli-sh. We did not want to get all 'fancied up" so ordered to go, I was told they did a renovation recently. I checked out Yelp and saw the writeup on the calamari. It was very tasty, but not the calamari rings and other bits I am accustomed to, it was in strips, just like the menu said :-0 I pondered - are these just bigger calamari? I swear the strips were like french fries. ( well sort of). We also ordered the Chicken & artichokes - tasty and a lot - think large portion! And their famous pot roast, which was served with pasta. The salads were why I gave it 4 stars, half of the lettuce was not good and the sad little slice of tomato tasteless. I would go back again and try some other things on the menu. This place is old school, like classic old school. Seems like it hasn't changed since the 40's and it maintains a certain level of nostalgia. It's dimly lit, and has a nice calm quiet ambiance. The food is great, good steak, pasta, just about everything else. It's not terribly expensive for how nice/good the food is. They have a nice bar with a couple of TV's if you wanted to catch a game, but it's not a typical sports bar. The wall in the kitchen has lots of famous athletes signatures and there is the odd piece of sports memorabilia around. It has dedicated free parking. Phil's has an older crowd consisting of Bixby Knoll's finest. This place is a real gem. They pour a really full glass of chardonnay and make excellent martinis. You will get drunk here. I love their food. I won't order fried calamari anywhere else, it's that good. I order it every time, because you just kind of have to. I also enjoy their blue cheese and tomato salad, which comes with sliced red onions and a little boat of oily vinegar dressing. My fiance and I share an entry and even if we're ravenously hungry it fills us both up, and we are not light eaters. You can leave your car parked overnight without worrying about being towed. I think I leave my car there 100% of the time that I go and it's good to know that you can take a cab home without this persistent fear that your car will be gone in the morning. Pasta, pasta, pasta. How I love the different shapes and colors; the menagerie of sauces to pour over. And the toppings? Endless. I'd say it's pretty hard to truly destroy such a basic food concept... unless you're a novice cook (like me) or you find yourself seated in a room full of senior citizens at Phil Trani's. Everything about this place is old. From the customers, to the decor... even the waiters/waitresses (except for the scantily clad host who could put Barbie to shame). And who wants to disappoint the boss, right? So while I thoroughly appreciate the complimentary warm bread that came after I was seated, the refreshing salad appetizer and prompt service, nothing could have prepared me for that disappointing entree they tried to pass off as pasta. Nothing. If the aim was to confuse my taste buds into a self-induced coma, they did a fantastic job. My palate was literally violated by the pesto sauce that drenched the otherwise edible angel hair pasta. I know my pesto. And I'm damn sure it's not supposed to taste like it did here. It was described on the menu to be some sort of creamy herb fusion, though the end results were something like: Cream 95%, Pesto 5% and to add insult to injury, the cream was thin and sweet. WTF! Got Salt? Maybe they cater more to the geriatric side of the restaurant, but still. Phil Trani's makes hospital food a lot more appetizing. Maybe the boss will let ME decide where to eat next time. We would've fared better at the local Olive Garden if you ask me, though he seemed to enjoy the slice of steak on his plate. So I pushed down what I was able to stomach with no desire to take the leftovers home. Years ago, my husband and I walked into Phil Trani's expecting an upscale dining experience and turned around and walked out. Last night we wanted red meat and didn't want to pay 555 or Ruth's Chris prices or face the wait at an Outback. So we decided to give Phil Trani's a try. Our expectations were pretty low. In some ways, the experience met those low expectations. In some ways, it exceeded them. First, the decor. It was as tired and outdated as we recalled. We walked in to see a row of broken-down, leaning chairs jammed against the wall and walked past sports memorabilia and pictures, some scotch taped to the wall, into a dining room that looks like vintage 1970s or early 1980s. Muzak played softly in the background and in our early 50s, we were among the youngest of the diners. The menu items are what you'd expect -- surf and turf with some pastas -- but the menus themselves are pretty cool. When you open them, they're backlit, making them easy to read in the semi-dim surroundings. The service was excellent -- friendly and attentive. The food was average. Not super inspired but the steaks were cooked at the requested temperature, and everything but the accompanying vegetables were hot. The prices are well below 555 or Chianina and with the entree, you get bread, salad or soup, potato or rice. Would we go back? Maybe again when our expectations are low. read more

I come here with some regulars and always get special service so that always helps. Traditional Italian food is excellent which is the main reason for coming. It's not a really modern place but rather has a traditional but homely feel especially around the bar area. Lots of memorabilia around the walls makes for an interesting browse. Wow I waited for years to finally try this place and when I did it was a major disappointment!!! Valentines night started with an appetizer that was meatballs with bell peppers it was slimmey and gross. I had a blue cheese salad that was soggy and wet. Some one should tell them that they need to dry the lettuce after washing it and before serving it. The steak I had was nothing special but at least it was cooked right and finally for dessert they gave us cheese cake that was still frozen and I mean FROZEN! You couldn't even cut it with a knife. Took Jamal here last night for his birthday; Trani's is a different dining experience from most restaurants in the area. Like Sam O. said, the pace is slower, and the atmosphere is definitely from a different era, but I don't think that's a bad thing. To me, there's a difference between leisurely service and bad service. Trani's service is of a different pace, so that you can enjoy your meal and your company, and we did both. We didn't lack for anything - our waters and coffee were filled, and we were checked on, without being harassed. I had the shrimp cocktail and the dinner salad supreme (and if you are looking for a BIG salad, this would be the one you'd want), made with tomatoes, bleu cheese, almonds, olives and egg. Jamal had the center filet cabernet, and it was delicious. We also had the calamari appetizer, which you should have if you go - it was perfectly done. ONLY reason I go here...is to be a trooper for my fiancée. Her friend works here. This place is like a restaurant you would find inside of Leisure World. Food is terrible. I've had a chicken dish off the menu...horrible. Bland. Nothing worth writing home about. My friend ordered the "fried mozzarella." HA...it was slice of cheese microwaved and spaghetti sauce poured on top. Only give it two stars for the drinks. But...that's not saying much. A fairly solid old style dinner house although tired. The one in San Pedro does it better. The decor is pleasant but unkept. Cushions on chairs and in booths are tired and, oddly, there are scratches on the walls. The house wines we had were all good. The pot roast was very tender and pretty tasty. The pasta side should have been drained before plating, it brought a lot of water to everyones plate. The chicken/artichoke pasta was fairly good but the sauce congealed as the dish cooled. My mom has been coming to this place for years and raves about it. I think she knows Phil Trani personally. The food is always great here. I'm giving three stars ONLY because the two times I've been here I've wanted to try the ribeye steak and both times they've been out. On my most recent trip here it was about 6 pm on a Saturday and they were out of Ribeye. How can you be out at 6pm? That means they just gave up and didn't order any for that day. The seabass was excellent. Great preparation, great texture and taste! Yet the salad, soup and service are horrible! The decor is dated and feels old and drab. Their servers are not at par with what I was expecting. They could be a candidate for geriatric restaurant of the year! I am surprised with the substantial amount of people eating there at lunch. But I guess the food makes up for everything else. This restaurant's decor is just painful to look at and be in, even if the food is good, I would not come back here. I like Phil Trani's. Yes, it's a little dated and dark...and it's obvoius from the decades of celebrity autographs in the lounge that it's been here a while, but I have yet to have a bad meal here. I have visited several times for lunch with work associates, and it's a nice place to meet with easy access right off the 405 and easy parking. I've had the salmon a few times, along with a pork entree and salads and always thought the food was great. We have also taken guests to dinner here on way to airport, and we were all pleased with the selection, food and service. read more

We stopped by Phil trani's on Friday. Live two blocks and had never been. We did not eat, just wanted to check out happy hour and get a feel for the place. Absolutely had an amazing experience! Loved the old school feel and all of the sports memorabilia. The staff was unbelievably attentive including Phil himself, who took the time to introduce himself and also remembered our names throughout our stay. $5 well and $5 wine( exceptional pour), plus several appetizers on the Happy Hour menu. The other patrons who seem to frequent the spot...possibly the same since they opened, were very welcoming and made for great conversation. I'm really not sure why this place is such an "establishment.:" Phil Trani's definitely has fans and they are usually over the age of 50. Once this crowd stops visiting, I'm really not sure they will have much business. This is probably something Phil should consider and revamp the restaurant... The food can be good or bad, depending on what you order. I've learned to stick with their salads. I recommend the Cobb Salad and the Caesar Salad with Blackened Salmon. Both salads are not wimpy; they are a full-sized bowl with tons of toppings. As for the other stuff, butter seems to be the main ingredient. I've had their Fettucine Alfredo and it was super heavy. I don't think I had more than 5 bites before I felt like I was already very full from the richness of that dish. The pan-crusted halibut was decent although it was also pretty rich. Again, I would definitely stick with their salads, especially for lunch. I would also order early because they served in a pretty relaxed manner, even at lunchtime. read more

Phil makes the best calamari on the planet. This is not just my opinion, it has been confirmed as a fact by everyone I know who has tried it. He also knows seafood and Amber the bartender pours a stiff drink. These things alone would be enough to keep me coming back, but Phil also makes a great blackened rib eye. The gangster ambiance comes for free. The restaurant has the feel of an old school steakhouse, and you expect to be sitting next to some well dressed italian American mobster, but more likely it will be a Long beach business person. Hey also have a throwback band on the weekends in he bar, which can make for a spectacle after the drinks start flowing. Phil sometimes gives local athletes jobs working in the kitchen, so you may run into a future NFL star as well. Overall, Phil Trani's is a great place to go for a lunch meeting, to have a drink (and some calamari) after work, or for a steak or seafood dinner with your wife. read more

This is hidden gem in Bixby Knolls, Long Beach that you would probably pass right by without noticing it but it's well worth it once you go, the place is older but still classy with good service. We went on a Friday evening when they had a live band so the atmosphere was nice, for the most part it's a mostly older crowd but they danced throughout the evening. I ordered the Chilean sea bass and my lady ordered the jambalaya, both dishes were so tasty and cooked perfectly! The sea bass melted in my mouth and the jambalaya comes with huge shrimp! What ever happened to the Phil Trani's Restaurant I once knew. We decided to celebrate Father's Day with a party of 9 on Friday night to avoid the crowd on Sunday. We had a horrible experience ! We arrived at our 7:30 pm Reservation on time. The bar area was extremely crowded but the Dinning Room only had a few patrons. It took forever for the waitress to come to our table to take our drink orders and then finally our dinner orders. I asked the waitress if they had clothe napkins and she made a rude remark by saying no but she could go to her house to get some. We had two young children with our party and I kept asking the waitress when were our meals coming out? She never had a satisfactory answer for me .Our dinners finally came at 9:00 pm. There were several Dinner orders that were not correct. and one dinner was completely cold. We advised the staff about the errors and the cold dinner plate of Veal Marsala. They took the Veal Marsala away only to return with it a few moments later. So what, did they just nuke it in the microwave ??? They finally made the corrections to the errors on the dinner orders that were not correct. The broccolis were burnt and some of the bake patatoes were not hot. We just got tried of complaining. I have to say the only redeeming factor was the Rib Eye Dinners that were order was that the Rib Eye Steaks was excellent. This was not a positive experience. We will never go back to Phil Trani's Restaurant in Long Beach and stick to to Jay Trani's Restaurant in San Pedro.. read more

So this place definitely has old school charm, which I enjoy. It reminds me of the types of places we went when i was a kid. It has a old steakhouse feel and a sports decor in the bar, where we usually eat. When we went for fathers day, I would give it 5 stars but we had a mixed experience on our previous trip. Father's Day the food was excellent, the service was good, there was a good band and a great atmosphere. We got the calamari based on recommendations from yelp and it some of the best i ever had. I had chicken ravioli (yum) and tried my dads fillet and lobster and my boyfriends rib eye. All was very AMAZING. Their mixed veggies were really good to, cooked right ( a lot of places over steam things. We are a meat eating family and I am that crazy girl in the market checking every single steak on the shelf for the perfect marbling. I am often so-so with steak places. The time we went before they were out of a couple things that were strange. They were out of like 4 things we wanted tried to order. When we got our steaks the waitress came out to us before bringing them and said they had been cooked medium instead of medium rare and rare. Due to the mistake they would be free or they could recook us something else since these were the last of the rib eyes they had. We took the medium steaks and were surprised by how great they were. Phil Trani's had an amazing atmosphere. I visited on a work lunch and the food was delicious. I had Shrimp Fettuccine Alfredo that didn't leave me feeling stuff but I was completely satisfied. Can't wait to take my husband so he can try their Chicken Marsala and give me his opinion. My Coworkers were raving about it. The staff was very attentive and not to the point of hovering. Wow what a disappointment. Several years ago I used to frequent Phil Trani's for the famous blackened ribeye. Then, it was one of the best steaks in town. My experience last night was less than favorable. I don't know if they change chefs or what but the food was subpar and the steak was flavorless, overly fatty, a bad cut and was not cooked correctly. I asked for black and blue and what I got was a little brown on the outside and raw inside instead of chard blacking on the outside and rare to raw on the inside. I rarely send food back but I could not eat it the way it was. I asked for to be put back on the fire and when I got back it still was not good. Where are those Cajun seasonings? Where is the blacking? Where is the charring? I will not be going back again. read more
