Dined here for restaurant week with a friend after. Visit to the met. The restaurant week deal was $45 for a 3 course meal which is a steal compared to the original menu. For appetizers we opted for the chicken satay and the chicken lettuce wraps. The portions were very generous and I really liked the lettuce wraps - we received maybe 8 lettuce wraps and a large pile of ground chicken with veggies and hoisin sauce to create our own lettuce wraps. The chicken satay peanut sauce was really tangy and sweet but aside from that the chicken could've used extra seasoning. For entrees we ordered the crispy beef and Beijing chicken with fried rice. Both were saucy and crispy but I don't think these two dishes particularly stood out for me. If I was paying full price I would think it was just average and nothing I would go out of my way for, but for the ambiance and price reduction I enjoyed it. For drinks the lychee martini was definitely a standout and I loved the coconut creme variation! For dessert the chocolate cake and red velvet was solid. I think I heard the name thrown around on tv or something and I was like mehhhh..BUT ITS NOT YALL.. it's just a nice cozy sexual vibe..I came for afternoon ..I was in the area shopping ..the menu is extensive ..they have a pre -fix for lunch . I went for restaurant week. I had an 8pm reservation and was asked to wait at the bar when I checked in, but was sat about 10 min later. We were sat upstairs, which is a little darker than the downstairs area. The tables are quite close together and the music was loud so it was very difficult to have a conversation. The food was good and the portions large. We had the veg lo mein and chicken lettuce wraps to start, the special prawns and crispy beef as entrees with sides of green beans (so good!!) and vegetable fried rice (greasy and no veggies to be seen) and the red velvet cake (very rich)) for dessert. With the exception of the rice, all was extremely tasty! The service was quick and efficient. So when we got here this place was a lot nice that we expected. But even though we were outside of the dress code they made accommodations for our group of 6. Menu was a little more expensive than planned for lunch too but it is absolutely worth it. The food was delicious.. the staff took really good care of us . Enjoyed a wonderful 3 days in NYC (proudly showing my vaccine card everywhere) and was looking forward to two dinners out, one at Philippe and another at a Michelin star Italian restaurant which shall remain nameless. Let's just say I wish I ate at Philippe twice. Everything was delicious. I now understand why people go crazy for the satay: perfectly succulent chicken, creamy sweet peanut sauce. We ordered the filet mignon and green beans (again, perfectly cooked), walnut shrimp (I can never resist when it's on the menu) and the lobster fried rice (so flavorful). Finally, the showstopper dessert: Cotton Candy Baked Alaska. What an experience. Friendly waitstaff, great service. Yes, it's pricey, but unlike the even pricier Michelin star restaurant I went to, this was so worth it. I always have a great time here. The atmosphere is great for a dinner of one and for a group. It does get crowded and overwhelming at times, but the food is great. The place itself is gorgeous and has a underground city aesthetic to it. The service here is quick and efficient. The food always taste the same which is GREAT because their recipes are on point! The hostess at the door very pleasant no problem, but the young lady that walked us to the table kind of gave us a weird look she looked. I said hello and smiled, she didn't reply instead looked me up and down. On a brighter note my server Oscar was excellent. I was shocked at how much I enjoyed this place. Based on the reviews, I thought I wasn't going to but this place is still the GIRL. Been around forever and still thriving. Must get the duck (obvi) and lychee martini was so yum. Lettuce wraps were also a must get. Portions are big so share a few plates between your group. I checked this place out for restaurant week, they are a bit on the pricey side but have a great Restaurant week Pre Fix menu, for $60 per person, 3 courses. We got the special but also ordered a soup each and an order of shrimp spring rolls and 2 sodas. Our bill came out to $190 for 2. A bit pricey for Chinese food for 2 people, but with that said, everything was really good. The hot & sour soup was very tasty and the shrimp spring rolls were really good too. We started with chicken satay & Lo mein as our appetizers, then Beijing chicken & prawns as the main course (came with mixed fried rice, which was really good). and finally red velvet cake as dessert. Everything we had was great and the service was very good too. The decor inside is nice, but the tables are VERY CLOSE to each other, it's like ur sitting on top of each other. I will definitely be going back before restaurant week is over and they also have a Pre fix tasting menu throughout the year that is $100 per person that looks pretty good. I'm very disappointed, I went to this place pre COVID for restaurant week. It left me with a good impression. Really liked the food. I can't say the same now. The decor and service still excellent but the food was lacking. We ordered from the restaurant week menu. We had the chicken satay in peanut sauce, wok seared branzino and Beijing chicken. The satay sauce was very sweet and creamy. The chicken was bland without the sauce. The branzino was one small filet with hoisin sauce dumped in top. The eggplant was bland. The Beijing chicken was the only thing we liked. Good flavor of sweet and spicy (mild). Very tasty with the well made rice. I wasn't surprised with the small portions. I find the more expensive a restaurant is the less you get. I don't mind expensive but I expect excellent food. So sad. read more

I found myself at Philippe for an educational dinner - not only do I enjoy going to these outright, but it was my first one since 2020 BC (you know, before COVID) - so I was super excited to get back out there. At first glance of the name I assumed this would be a French restaurant, but after more research I discovered they were an upscale Chinese restaurant. This piqued my interest even more, so after work yesterday I made my way to the UES for some munching and learning. I'll be honest I was struggling to find Philippe walking down 60th - the combination of igloos set up for outdoor dining and the larger facade of Il Mulino right next door makes Philippe somewhat inconspicuous. I eventually found it, and made my way upstairs to one of the private dining areas. The aesthetics downstairs were loud (audibly speaking) - there's low lighting and a bar right when you enter. The upstairs area was more quiet, and had a more neutral to bright color scheme. The food was served family style, and we had a good variety of their menu offerings. We started with spring rolls, spare ribs, scallion pancakes, salt & pepper eggplant, chicken satay, duck & cilantro dumplings, and shrimp satay. None of the apps were offensive, but I don't think they necessarily stood out either. Also I was slightly puzzled because they didn't bring out enough food for the table. There were seven of us but we only got 6 ribs and 6 duck dumplings (???). If I had to choose a standout it would have been the spring rolls - they were filled nicely and paired with a flavorful sauce. For mains we had chilean sea bass, house Mignon, Kung Pao chicken, broccoli, shrimp fried rice, and slow roasted pork. Everything was fine, but I just didn't find it to be the most memorable food. I'll be real, the broccoli was my favorite because it was seasoned well. For dessert we had sorbet, s'mores tart, and cotton candy baked Alaska - again, all fine. Service was good - everyone was friendly and attentive which I greatly appreciated. Overall though, I wasn't impressed with Philippe's food; nothing was particularly bad, I just felt that the quality didn't match the setting and pitch they give. This review is based on our take out experience. We have dined here before and were craving some chicken satay. The food here is good and this being our first time getting take out from here we were very happy the quality remained. The time we waited for take out was average. I never get dessert but had a sweet tooth and ordered the peanut butter explosion! It was super good! The right amount of fudge and peanut butter. We also had honey glazed spare ribs, duck spring rolls, salt and pepper prawns, pork fried rice and kung pao chicken and crispy beef. Our only complaint is of the kung pao chicken.
