Brought the rest home and probably won't even eat the rest. I get cutting costs and probably hiring chefs who don't know authentic portuguese cooking. Looks like a nice little spot. I got 2 meals there. Unfortunately, I got sick after both of them. 1st pork and littlenecks. It came in a thick brown gravy, which was odd. The pork was chewy, but I ate it. Sick all night. I wanted to give them another chance because I love little places like this. I had a Portuguese steak. It was a nice little steak with fries and rice, and an egg on top. Again, in brown gravy with a couple pieces of garlic. I ate it. I was burping by the end of it, and I literally threw up in the parking lot. I needed to change my shirt. It just came on instantly, and I was dizzy for the whole day. I couldn't do anything to settle my stomach. I have had both meals in mant Portuguese restaurants. Never had anything like this happen to me. I was finally able to try this restaurant. I'm a huge fan of Portuguese cuisine, I've spend a lot of my childhood years at my buddy's house after school enjoying his mother's old world cooking. So I ordered 2 of the specials today The pork chops which I chosen to be grilled. 2 really good looking 1/2" center cut pork chops with French fries and rice. They should brined the chops for I found them too dry. The roasted octopus look great,nice and tender but I found the dish to be too salty. And it was not just the sauce but the octopus was salty by itself. So my recommendation is to hold back on the use of salt! The portions are definitely generous. I really enjoyed the rolls that they served. Will have to try them out again to see if the other dishes are as good as they look. So to update my review, I had to call up the restaurant the following day after I figured out that I'm a few hundred dollars lighter the next morning. I couldn't find my cash stash and my wholesale shopping club membership card. After a exhausted effort on locating my cash and card, I had to retrace my earlier day and realized the last time I recall seeing the cash and card was when I paid for my lunch the day earlier. So I called to see if anyone may have found it at the restaurant. And with no expectations of ever seeing the cash or card, I was just blown away when they ask for my name and then they informed me that they in fact found it and they was holding it for me. I was so happy to see that there are still honest people out there and that the waitress who found it and made sure to secure it for my return was deserving of a reward. Thank you ! Nothing fancy about this place but the food is good. Located in a residential neighborhood in the basement of an event hall, def worth driving to. The restaurant is located on the left hand side of the building with an adjoining parking lot. When you get in, you pretty much can seat yourself. I believe they have a bar area too. This visit, we started with the wings and ordered the grilled porkchop special and pork Alentejana for dinner. Although a bit on the small side, the wings were nice and crispy and came with a dipping hot sauce and pickled veggies that I didn't really care for. The porkchops simple but oh so delicious and came with a side of rice and fries (I didn't have to choose, I got them both!). The Alentejana is very tasty simmering in a wonderful savory sauce. There was more than enough to take home for leftovers. The service is friendly but a bit slow at times if there are several other customers. The few times we've come here, there were only 2 waitresses working the place. We like coming here b/c it's a no frills, belly filling joint that is very easy on your wallet. You always hear of places being "authentic" or "like home" which, to me, carry certain expectations. Phillips St Restaurant is a place that carries such a description and, until recently, was a place I hadn't even heard of. That combination pushed it up the list of places I needed to check out. The girlfriend and I visited on a whim and immediately upon entering you felt like you were walking into someone's spacious basement kitchen in the heart of Fall River or the Azores. Men and women were eating, talking and laughing loudly which if you've ever been to a Portuguese gathering, isn't an uncommon scene. The decor was dated, and what you'd expect from a place located in the basement. No one was around when we walked in. There's always that awkwardness of do I sit or do I wait, eventually we just sat. The service was certainly attentive going forward, and our drinks and order were taken quickly. We ordered the grilled chouriço, the bife Phillips St, and the carne de porco Alentejana. Basically the house steak which I ordered with Portuguese potatoes over French fries and marinated pork with roasted potatoes and little necks. The chouriço had some spice, nothing crazy, the flavorful kind and was well grilled. The steak dish was large and the sauce from the steak was very good. The egg yolk was soft and runny which is a must because you need to sop that up, right? The pork was well cooked as well and the sauce was equally tasty. I didn't care as much for the roasted potatoes with it. They were ok, just lacked crispness and freshness to me. All in all, I don't think they'll be pushing my mom into permanent retirement cooking wise, but the food really is very good, and if you like Portuguese cooking and haven't been, you really should. Great place to bring a large group. I do not have much experience with Portuguese food, but found my selections quite tasty. I had little necks cooked in white wine and garlic sauce. The broth was great with the tasty bread. I also had a taste of sautéed shrimp, calamari, and grilled sausage. All were great. My entree was Bitoque, sirloin with egg on top with Portuguese fries and rice. I have discovered a new menu favorite. Our waitress was very accommodating. We had pitchers of sangria, which were very good. Parking was plentiful. A plus, while we were there on a Friday night was the entertainment. A Portuguese guitarist and singer. This is another place that I had forgotten about. We went here for a family birthday party and there were 21 of us so it was a place that would take reservations for a large group on a Friday night. The food is good but not fantastic. I think that it is not as flavorful as some other Portuguese restaurants in the area but it was well cooked. The service was excellent and the people were very kind. We have a number of children with us and they were very accommodating to that. We were surprised to have music with our dinner. There was a man who played guitar and sang and he was delightful. It was pretty busy there and yet the service was quick, especially for having such a large party. The littlenecks in garlic wine sauce were very good. And the sauce itself was so good for dipping with the Portuguese rolls. You don't need to travel to Fall River for good Portuguese food! East Providence has several great Portugal Restaurants..and Phillips street hall, which is off the beaten path, is one of them. My go to: bitoque....delicious steak with a fried egg on top soaking in a sauce that you will want to drink with a straw! If you are into carbs.....the Portuguese french fries and rice sides are your dream come true. If you feel like you need a vegetable and you only want one carb...Portuguese french fries all the way! I have also had their surf and turf....which is a special and the best thing I have ever eaten there.....just order your steak medium rare of you like it medium. They notoriously overcook meat. Great little hideaway, hidden below the Holy Ghost Beneficial Brotherhood of RI hall in a quiet little neighborhood just steps from RT44. You'd never know this place was here, and that'd be a shame. A cheery and efficient group of waitresses serve a crowd of neighborhood families, gentle grandmother to eager grandchild, close friends, wedded couples and co-workers, at long tables and "two tops". There is a generously sized bar, and the most reasonably priced wine and drink menu I have seen in recent memory. Portuguese beer (Sagres) and wines, from Dão Reserva to Vinho Verde are prominent components. But I came for some chouriço. I was not disappointed. Grilled Portuguese sausage was the start of my visit. Served with hand made pickled peppers, and a heavy char, a single large sausage was plenty for two of us to share. Meaty, spicy and flavorful, good stuff. What followed was a giant serving of Carne de Porco à Alentejana. Marinated, cubed Pork, black olives, Littleneck clams, and boiled potatoes prepared in a spicy Paprika and Coriander sauce. Its a dish that screams with local flavor, and for a hearty roll to mop up that sauce. The stellar standout was the Bacalhau Frito com Cebolada. I have had bacalhau nearly a hundred times, from Bairro Alto to New Beige, and every time its a different dish. This one was a treat. A center cut Codfish steak, salted, battered whole, and fried. Then dressed in a sauce of sautéed Onion and Peppers, the vinegar sauce base perfectly balanced by the sweet reduced onions. This was not an easy dish to eat, the cod had a crisp crust and had not been filleted or deboned. The effort in pulling out the moist flaky fish, rewarded. I had no idea this lil gem even existed. It's nestled in the basement beneath a hall in quiet neighborhood in EP. Blink and you will miss it. The menu is small, and there aren't any descriptions, only the Portuguese and English names of the dish. The waiters can elaborate on anything that may be confusing. I get the vibe that everyone is from the community and they genuinely want you to love their food. I ordered the marinated pork with littlenecks. HOLY CRAP. I had no idea that you'd get this much food heaping on one plate. It was ridiculous. I don't even pretend to know the spices they used, but it was a magical combination. Frickin magical. Other deets: calamari for a starter was flavorful, but a tad too overdone for my liking. Totally forgivable. I was unsure of my beverage choice, so they let me sample the Portuguese wine. Always a bonus. I settled on a gin & tonic, there was a nice selection of gins, and a perfect pour. After dinner cafe? Yes please! They call it a bika (sp?) and it's a nice strong espresso. I wish I had room for dessert, but I was taking home at least 2 meal's worth of leftovers from my dinner. In closing, this little treasure of Portuguese deliciousness gets my vote. This hidden gem is a keeper y'all! Tucked into the basement of a hall is where you'll find great food at unbelievable prices! I thought my mother-in-law passed down some great recipes to me but this surpassed my every expectation! We visited Friday, January 31st, for my hubby's big 30, with his straight from the islands of Azores", family. I'm not familiar with one word food dishes, so I wasn't sure what I was going to get. Everything listed on the menu was in Portuguese with 1 word English reference underneath. Luckily I got help from the man, otherwise I would have probably ended up with what my father-in-law ordered ( a big hot steaming bowl of whole octopus). I opted for the classic, steak with egg. It arrived hot and looking fabulous with a fat juicy steak, huge piles of rice and fries with red peppers and an over easy egg to top it off. The gravy underneath the pile of food is what I can only describe was liquid gold, a taste bud' gasm! Yum! From that very moment I put the fork to my mouth I was in heaven! The rest of the table, including myself was silent stuffing bite after bite of the glorious meal in their mouths. I barely looked up to notice the live music. Two men with guitars strumming classic island tunes made it perfect to work on digesting the wonderful meal I had just ate. To top that off, I had another half a meal leftover to bring home! It was utter sadness when I woke up and found out the man had eaten my leftovers before I even awoke the next morning as breakfast :( but on the bright side, I live within 2 miles of this place and have an excuse to go back this week! Yes! The bill was less than $65 for 5 of us and our waitress spoke both English and Portuguese for the in laws. Love love love love Phillips Street Restaurant. I never would have known it existed, but a Portuguese-American friend recommended it so enthusiastically that we had to check it out. It's just out of the way enough, and looks nothing like a restaurant, that I never would have accidentally stumbled upon it. Portions were huge, staff and clientele incredible friendly, menu was varied, and it had that awesome other worldliness feel - the combination both of being in a basement and our server not speaking English. So very awesome and so very off the mainstream circuit of greater Providence restaurants. Don't come for glam decor. Come for an awesome, belly-filling meal and a genuinely warm and welcoming vibe. I've waited a long time to try out this place, as I heard quite a good amount of praise from food enthusiasts and yelp elitists. However, I am afraid that my high expectation may have harmed my overall experience. The initial entrance was everything I've ever wanted in a mom-pop restaurant; the tables and chairs were set in the basement, giving it an almost underground Church vibe. My friends and I definitely felt very out of place, with almost everyone of the patrons enjoying their tasty meals, with me unable to understand a word people were saying. The service was terrific and friendly, however, what really saddened me was the quality of the meals. I had the whole grilled red snapper fish special, which I was really excited for, but it was just too salty for my tastebuds. I tried the daily soup, which was actually amazing and felt so deliciously homemade. The grilled chicken and the steak were both wonderfully portioned for the price, but overcooked for both. Definitely not cool. Waiting for them to ask for a drink, for some bread, for ANYTHING. Not cool. I'll maybe do takeout, but I highly doubt it. My carne alentejana was decent, but many of the pieces of meat were too tough to chew. The sauce was tasty, so I just sopped it with bread, ate some potatoes, and threw the rest out. Had lunch here the other day and loved it! I live in New Bedford and just happened to be in the area and decided to give it a shot. It's located in the basement of a function hall or similar building so very unassuming and slightly 'hidden'. The prices are unbeatable for the amount of food given I got the Phillips st steak and my gf got the lombinhos do porco na brasa (grilled pork medallions). She only ate half while I crushed my steak and we shared a bottle of wine. We then split a grandmothers pudding which tends to vary from restaurant so we like to try them everywhere.
