I first found out about PhiloÇoffee (pronounced philosophy) on Instagram when it was feature on an account because of their "Insta-perfect" colorful lattes. I finally had a chance to go there and not only try their espresso drinks but their sandwiches too. There is street parking only along W French Pl, and there is a sign in the lot next door saying that it's for that law firm only. However, it's a quite street so no need to worry about your car being at risk of getting hit, towed, or not having enough space. The inside is relatively small, but during good weather days their seating expands with outdoor tables on their patio in the back. It has a very cozy feeling inside with the white walls, wood floors, exposed metal, metal chairs, wood tables, and comfy armchairs and couches. There is a drink fridge across from the counter and there is a pastry display next to the register on said counter. The menu is on a large blackboard hung high up in the ceiling behind the register on the counter. The prices are a little funny at first glance since they end in $0.80, but the prices are extremely fair compared to what other places are charging for drinks, sandwiches, and food. My husband and I ordered a cortado, vanilla latte, reuben sandwich with a side salad (extra $0.75, pretty good), and a turkey pesto sandwich with the default side of kettle fries. There were only two members working that we could see - one manning the register and the coffee and the other in the kitchen. Despite the full house of customers and the minimal manning, they turned the others out in an extremely appropriate amount of time. The sandwiches were warm, toasty, and tasty. The side salad was topped with feta cheese and pickled onions as well as a balsamic vinaigrette dressing. It wasn't over the top but rather just right. The cortado was well done and my latte was extremely smooth and not too sweet from the vanilla. I was surprised the latte wasn't colored, but I also realized that it may not be a default options or come with every drink. So before I left I asked the barista how to get the colors and she said that you ask for it for a $0.25 surcharge. I'm in San Antonio for a family emergency and my one pleasure or respite is to visit at least one different coffee shop a day...PhiloCoffe was my first coffee shop (besides the obligatory Starbucks visit!) This is a small shop with great outdoor seating. The three young gentleman working were polite and friendly and knowledgeable about the menu items. I had an iced lavender latte - the flavor was nicely balanced and not too sweet. I didn't try any food but they seemed to have some great snacks! I've seen employees be short with one another on a handful of occasions during a "rush" around 10AM. Not the best look in a small space where all customers can see and hear you. Stumbled upon Philo and I am stoked that I did! This quaint little coffee shop is a great find and not just for coffee. Philo has a great selection of hot food, such as the turkey pesto, but also great options like the bagel and lox. Don't forget to pick up a muffin as well as the Lemon muffin is extremely delicious! The seating outside is really nice and a great place to sit down and relax. If you take your pupper, they can get a free treat as well, which is always nice. The atmosphere is just what I look for in a small, individually owned shop: quaint, clean, welcoming, peaceful. PhiloCoffee was a SOLID coffee shop! I'm always on the hunt for new coffeeshops popping up in San Antonio, but I do wish that they're closer though. I heard about PhiloCoffee by a fellow Yelper and after hearing her rave and pour her love out for this coffee spot I knew that it will definitely be worth the drive. First impressions, its a fairly small coffee shop with several bar stool seats and booths. There's a fair number of outlets so you settle down and get to work! PhiloCoffee offers various number of pastries that vary from sweet to savory. My first time going I asked for the barista's recommendation since that usually a pretty good gauge at what they like the best/are most proud of. I ended up ordering a cortado and a tomato and cheese pastry. The pastry was an interesting concept since you have the sweet glazed puff pastry, but also the savory components of the tomato and the cheese. The cortado was strong with a slight bitterness, but a very nice aftertaste! My preferred drink is usually a cold brew or a latte since I usually go to coffee shops and work for hours, but the cortado was a nice change. I really loved this coffee shop. Mostly for its location and ambiance. It's lovely inside, eclectic, minimalist furnishings, yet cozy, the kind of place that you'd want to take a book to and read on a rainy day. Lots of natural light. And the coffee, these guys can definitely make a beautiful latte, and taste wise, full bodied, but not bitter in the least. Had a cinnamon roll, fairly basic, I'm into sweets so I would have liked it more gooey and with lots more icing, but my waistline is thankful that it wasn't that decadent. I would have liked a larger pastry selection but that's just a preference. I look forward to going back and trying the matcha latte and everything else on the menu. One suggestion: the place is small and not really kid friendly, though it's not anti-kid, it's just not a place I'd take my toddler back to. read more

The decor is chill but spiffy; more polished than the former occupant (Press), almost too spare. I ordered a hot green tea, and it was a suitable pick-me-up. They offer pastries, croissants, macarons, and other francophile goodies. First impressions to me are everything . And based on that I'm either ready to be pleasantly surprised or graciously disappointed. By now you've heard about the newly opened Philo Coffee where the "C" is pronounced as an "S", a clever Parisian linguistic nod. Twas not so long ago that it used to be the ultra hip Press Coffee. But in the realm of Yelp all things must have an entrance and an exit. Without going on a Tolkienesque rant(too late for that!) that fills ten volumes of a book I will try to be the utmost brief. Firstly the interior feels aesthetically incomplete. For example the walls were bare without any art. In its defense a silhouette of the Eiffel Tower is incorporated into their logo, suggesting a French influence is at hand. However none of the rest of the decor throughout the room supports that notion. On the beverage end I did try their French Pressed Coffee and it was okay. It just seemed too bitter for my taste. The owner's heart seems to be in the right place. However as an indie coffee house it's imperative that you make some sort of connection with your patrons. It begins the minute we enter and leave. I say this since my experience was less than welcoming. A warm, friendly personality by staff is immeasurably. It permeates through the room like the sun. Making even the most unpleasant day just a little bit bearable. Yelp is about taste and all taste is subjective. The qualities that make one business extraordinary to one person can be underwhelming to another. And vice versa. Philo Coffee is a witty play on a name. The rest of the place just needs to catch up to its own cleverness. read more

We've been here twice since we arrived in San Antonio two weeks ago. My top favorite coffee drink is a cortado and they do them extremely well. The baristas are friendly and kind and clearly skilled, every drink we've gotten has latte art on it. It's small inside with roughly 10 seats so if it's full you may be out of luck for seating, but if you can snag one it's a grab place to bring your laptop or a book.
