Similar to many other reviews here, it took me a few tries at Philz before I found something I actually liked. Everyone raves about the mint mojito but honestly, it tastes like cold pho to me. Think about it next time you have it. Since they have so many options, it's difficult to decide on a roast. I feel like the descriptions of the roasts don't sound appetizing at all to me. For example, I don't want smoke flavors or weird fruit flavors when I think about coffee. But I know, it doesn't actually taste like that. I've decided to work my way down the dark roast menu. I had Jacob's Wonderbar this last time and it was pretty good. I'll continue on next time I come here and the line is short. I would say, some of their roasts are good, but are they worth waiting 30 minutes for? Not at all - there are plenty of other coffee shops where you can get some good coffee and not have to wait that long - thus the 3 star review. Doesn't mean I'm not coming here, just means I'm not going to wait in a long line for it. And if it's your first time, it's kind of confusing to know what to do or how to order. So for the newbies out there - you get in line. Once a barista is free - you'll place your order there - feel free to ask questions. They'll take your order and you go to the counter and pay and then come back and wait for your drink. Coffee is expensive and this and local coffee shops are the only places I frequent. Anyways, the staff here is friendly and there's a decent amount of tables. Coffee here is always on point. It's fresh, creamy, and has a lot of options. From vanilla soy to oat milk to almond milk to cream to stevia, sugar, and honey, it's easy to customize a drink to fit your dietary needs. There's tons of food options and the burrito I got was pretty good and filling. The potatoes, eggs, and cheese went well together and I didn't feel "stuffed" afterwards like with other burritos. read more

The way they set the app up to customize your order is unique, so I give it bonus points for that. They have many options for food and pastries, as well as pretty unique drinks. Good pour offer coffee from the Bay Area with a creative menu. If you want a cappuccino or espresso you will be disappointed as they only have pour overs. The ambiance is nice with lots of places to sit and even work if you want. The staff is very friendly and efficient. I stopped by here after breakfast at Snooze a couple of buildings down. I've seen Philz Coffee in social media but didn't know that it's in the same shopping center as Snooze (in La Jolla) until I spotted it! Layout of the coffee shop is cute, clean, and minimal. The space is open and there is plenty of bright, natural, light. The place was packed! I would steer clear during finals week - I can only imagine it being even more packed in there! The shop is also located in a busy complex, so parking might be a little tight. I ordered a small iced mint mojito. If you've never had mint and coffee together, but you think you might like it, I say go for this drink! The mint isn't as aggressive and the coffee still comes through smoothly. The caffeine level isn't too much, either - just right. I kind of regret not getting a large, so I will definitely be seeking a large ice mint mojito from them sometime in the future as well as eating some of their yummy offering (pastries and bagels, please)! read more

I love Philz mostly because I love mint-flavored anything. The line was ridiculously long (boo!) so they only get 4 stars. I feel like the way they are set up isn't very efficient. I do however love the quality of the coffee- it is drip coffee freshly prepared for you, made to order! Parking in this plaza sucks but if you know the area you know that parking sucks in general in the UTC area due to the abundance of college students. I recommend if you are a coffee snob! read more

I do like the idea of Philz Coffee making its way down to San Diego and I hope there are more to come. At this location I order the "Dancing Water" light pour over and a coffee and chocolate chip scone which they warmed up for me. The Dancing Water was light but offered a subtle chocolate flavor and hints of nuts. It was clean and smooth with not bitterness. I had it with a touch of cream and went well with the scone I ordered. It was a very good pour over. The scone was decadent. It was very moist and heated it up melted the chocolate chips on top and inside the scone which just raised the bar. It tasted great and liked that the coffee flavor was subtle and not over done. The staff members are all very nice and helpful, but I will say to management, you need to lower the volume of the music. I felt bad for the employees who had to keep on yelling for customers to hear when their orders were ready. To make matters worse, many patrons could not hear their orders being called out over the music, so the employees had to keep yelling the orders out. Let's use some common sense here and lower the music here please. It's hard enough for patrons to have conversations, let along hear an employee fifteen feet away. read more

They have finally opened! I am not much of a coffee drinker but I drink Philz! I have never had any trouble with long lines, which is great considering their popularity. The baristas are always really friendly and they'll adjust the drinks to your liking. My goto order is the Mint Mojito with Almond Milk (lactose intolerance friendly!). I love how they always make it at the perfect sweetness level for me, and the fresh mint is a great touch. The place seems to be always packed with people studying/working, so I'd definitely recommend coming here early if you want to grab a seat. read more

If you're willing to wait, the coffee here is worth it. No matter when you go, this place always has a line but I think that just speaks to the quality of the drinks. There are a variety of roasts available, and you can further customize your milk and sugar options when you order rather than adding it in after. As this is only a pour over place, don't expect espresso drinks, but they do have some specialty combinations for a fun twist on standard coffee. My go to is the mint mojito because it's really refreshing. There is also a small tea selection, hot/iced chocolate, and a small food menu and pastry case. I am a long time Philz fan, and first discovered them in Palo Alto. I liked the coffee, but this location is just too gross! I went here because my mom also likes their coffee and we were in their neighborhood. While waiting for more than 20 minutes for our order I had time to see a veritable carpet of dog hair. Having Philz nearby is like having a little piece of home (Bay Area) nearby. I am a black coffee enthusiast. Although Philz is known for their Mint Mojitos and their hot and cold drinks come sweetened and with creamer if you don't specify, I come for their black coffee. For those unfamiliar with Philz, this is not your typical coffee shop with lattes and cappuccinos. Philz makes amazing pour over coffees. The variety of black coffee is something to clap about. I already visited this location twice in their first week of being open. Service and quality has been consistent both times. It's amazing to know you're getting a fresh cup of coffee, rather than coffee that has been sitting on a burner for close to an hour. The taste is completely different! I love the Philtered Soul. It's my go to coffee at Philz. When I requested something different, but similar, Ally recommended combining the Jacob's Wonder Bar and Dancing Waters. Great recommendation!! I love Philz and I'm so happy that another one is in San Diego! This location is found next to whole foods and rubio's. I visited on a Saturday morning at 11AM and it was packed! People with Philz drinks were crowded on the tables outside the store and walking around the plaza. This location isn't the best for studying or catching up simply because it's so busy and the music is super loud. It's less of an open space than the store in Encinitas. The baristas are as friendly as all the other Philz stores and the drinks are just as good. If you're a first time, definitely go for the infamous Mint Mojito. I tend to go for the tea drinks because they're so meticulous about how they make them. They steam your milk and make sure there's the perfect amount of sweetener for your taste which I really appreciate. Overall, this is a solid store and I'm so happy to have a location closer to me. There are tables to study on and multiple bathrooms. -located in a shopping center with a lot of other options like Sprinkles and Whole Foods. -even though the parking lot can get crowded, it usually isn't hard to find a spot. I get it's a bunch of college students, but every time I've ordered from this place, they're all texting on their phones while simultaneously taking orders. Management thinks this is okay since it happens every time I've come in (3 times in a row). This place was totally bonkers. I've never seen anything like it. It's right by the college so this place is packed to the gills with college students on laptops. Forget about getting a table or sitting down. Sure there is a ton of seating, but people park it with no intention of leaving. Ordering is weird. You go to the barista, order, walk to a cash register, repeat your order and walk back to the barista. They should just have you order up front and print a ticket for the barista or something. It's weird and doesn't work well for flow in a packed place. The coffee was great. It's setup sort of like a cocktail bar and I do want to go back and try more. But the parking lot is jammed, the seating area is nuts and it's stressful to think about. Great coffee, but the ordering setup is not ideal and the seating area is a cluster. Where to begin.. first of all, the layout of this place just isn't right. My first impression is where do I order? Luckily they tucked that in the back right where nobody can see it. I was asked by 5 customers if I was in line so it wasn't just me. People walk in and have no idea where to go. Chaotic is the best way to describe it. To add to the confusion, why is the overhead menu board above the coffee prep area not visible from the ordering counter? It makes you think this is where you should order. I had to walk over to look at their special coffee menu and lost my spot in line. Overall, nobody thought about the layout and flow which is frustrating when you just want to order a quick coffee. It just feels random. Now let's get to the coffee. The flavor, is what I imagine a boot boiled in dirty water would taste like. Absolutely disgusting. Not sure what about it I didn't like, let's just say it was the entire flavor profile. And this was their mild and signature "Philharmonic" coffee blend with hints of vanilla, rubber shoe soles and of course, leathery boot. On top of that, they don't even have the ability to make a real latte as they don't make espresso. Just the overpriced dirty boot drip coffee I guess. I asked for sugar and cream in it and I think they used an eyedropper because there was absolutely none in there. And worst of all, is probably their baked goods. I ordered the blueberry muffin that was as dry as Sahara desert with a crumbly topping that was pure sugar chunks. I think I counted about five blueberries in it so at least they tried there.I could hardly eat it and as I reached for my boot flavored coffee, I cringed at the fact that I paid $12 to suffer through this. At that point I pulled up yelp and looked for the closest Starbucks so that I could actually get a decent cup of coffee and wash down this dry, old muffin. It can however be used as bricks in your next construction project or smashed down put into sand bags or used in concrete mix, your choice. It's definitely not fit for human consumption. Bottom line these guys are kind of a joke and really need to get their act together, re-evaluate the whole concept and provide a better product. I honestly can't wait for the day that they close down and a Pete's or Starbucks opens up in its place to serve this community with decent coffee and fresh food. The customer service here saved a mental disaster with the in laws. Cut to the chase, the Philz team is AMAZING! In laws are visiting, being fickle in laws. We order Philz for the morning so we can get out and away for a bit while picking up coffee. Inlaws change the order 4 times on us while we're trying to go pick it up which confuses us and the baristas (so sorry!). We get to Philz and pick up everything and as we sit in to the car to head back we spill 4 of our drinks. The team remade the drinks for us and gave us towels to clean up. The person at the register specifically stated no ice when they read back the order but of course we get a drink filled to the brim with ice. Now I have a watered down drink we paid $7 for.
