In general, I tend to really enjoy and love Philz coffee, but far too many mistakes have hindered me from enjoying this location. Which is a shame because it's a convenient one. I gave this place so many chances too which makes me feel really frustrated and upset. This location tends to hire college students, which means turnover of employees seems to be fast and perhaps, that's why many drinks turn out to be the wrong one because they aren't trained enough. The first couple times, I let it go, it happens but I have to mention the Mission Cold Brew I order is VERY often confused for the Philtered Soul Cold Brew I receive which is even a HAZARD because what if I was someone who had a severe nut allergy? I can immediately tell when they messed up and swapped the drink because I strongly dislike that flavor. I don't understand how especially for that drink order, they wouldn't be careful about one of the most common allergies. Please be careful about ordering drinks here because they aren't being careful. What makes it worse is that my partner wakes up early to treat me to coffee (5am) as a encouragement when I have an important event. After the fourth? time of this disappointment, after the event, I even headed back to let them know about this wrong order and the super super short interaction was that barista was nice and swapped the drink for the right one in actually a minute (not sure if I even felt my pricey drink was worth it at that point)...and that others seemed unfriendly, (they weren't super busy). But I still felt wronged after driving there later in the day and the constancy of wrong orders happening. I don't know if I expected for them to apologize or offer anything, but it was overall frustrating. They just don't pay attention. I also have to say that that coffee quality is also very inconsistent. The baristas who make really good drinks make it well when I tend to order a New Manhattan sweet and creamy, but the ones who don't... all tend to have VERY varying amounts of what sweet is. (I hate saying this) but it tends to suck when I can see a name on the app that we know is consistently bad, making the order. (i don't feel the need to name names.) But truly a complete hit or miss there. read more

This was my first time visiting. All my classmates kept raving about this place for months, so I decided to make the 20 min drive solely to try this place and try the mint mojito like they suggested. Since, at this point, I was so convinced it would be good I ordered a larger size than I normally would (at over $6). But I was really disappointed. I didn't taste any mint flavor at all. I figured this was just the way the drink was supposed to taste and let it go, but decided not to come back in the future since it wasn't what I wanted/expected. After relaying this info to my classmates, they assured me that it should've been VERY minty. Someone even said that sometimes the first batch isn't made right and you have to ask them to make it again to get it right... The first two times I had Philz I didn't like it. I tried their oh-so-famous Mint Mojito and I thought it was too sweet, even when I asked for less sugar after the barista told me how much sugar they normally put in (it's a lot). Then the next time at another location I was rushed and ordered a dark roast without any sugar or cream and it was too bitter for me. I guess if I had known there was more than just sugar and dairy cream for add-on options I might have had a better experience. As a review recommended, I downloaded the app to see how it was and I really liked it! The design is cute and simple to use. Now I know they have other creamer options like almond milk, oat milk, soy milk, etc. and sweeteners like honey, Splenda and stevia. This time I got the Philharmonic, iced with almond milk and honey and it was one of the perfect cup of coffees I had in while! Smooth from start to finish and refreshing from the mint leaves. I'm a b buzz fan but this made me want to switch over to a Philz fan. Third times the charm I guess. Parking & seats inside can be very hard to find as this location is right next to UCSD and lots of college students study here. The tables there have limited space (just enough to put your laptop and coffee) so if you're a student don't expect to be able to have multiple notebooks open while also having your laptop in front. WiFi is pretty fast too considering that it's not secured in a big plaza with other stores. I was able to do have a Skype conference call without any issues. It does get loud so I'd personally wouldn't have calls here again as I got feedback that there were lots of background noise. read more

Philz is good - so long as you don't adjust anything on there and leave the drinks 'the house way.' If you adjust anything from sweetness to cream, you're about to pay 6+ for a drink that doesn't taste worth the price. Every time I get a mint mojito (I cross my fingers and swipe my credit card) and adjust it in some way, it's either watered down, too bitter because I said less sweet and creamy, or too sweet because I said 'medium sweet.' It doesn't seem like the levels of sweetness or creaminess are ever the same, and it's so frustrating because I enjoyed this place living in San Francisco. Went out of my way to come here cause I'm obsessed with the iced coffee rose. Did a mobile order on my way and waiting 10 minutes when I got there. I love Philz and have been to various locations in CA. I usually get the Mint Mojito and while this location is good, the drinks are not quite as amazing as the other locations. I'll probably still stop by if I'm craving Philz in SD, but for some reason, the drinks are sometimes lacking. - The Mint Mojito is always a good go-to. I also recommend the iced Gingersnap for a cinnamon-y taste. If you're looking for less caffeine, I recommend their iced Chai. - Easy in-app ordering and pick up. So much hype around the mint mojito and it's totally true. What a delicious, flavorful, and refreshing iced drink. The coffee was smooth, the mint flavor was robust yet had a beautiful soft note, and the "house way" made this drink just the right sweetness for me ("house way" makes the drink a little sweeter). I love that the barista told me, "let me know if it needs any adjustments" as she was handing the drink to me. This kind of customer service that puts the customer first is a 10/10 in my book. Parking can be tough especially around lunch time as there's many restaurants and shops nearby but spots free up quickly. The register women just walked away and started taking out the trash. Did not come back to the register for almost 5 minutes. By the time she returned there were 8 people in line. She took 2 more orders and walked away again for another several minutes. I watched her actually refill the cup holders instead of taking orders. Obviously, as I'm seeing a lot these days, these places have no manager on staff over the age of 18 to 20 with any regard for customer service. Philz needs to send their folks to Starbucks training. Went here around 10 am, was pretty busy and the wait time was average. I got an iced rose coffee and a monkey bread muffin for around 10.40. The monkey bread muffin was unbearably stale. It was cold and warm and somehow tasted like freezer burn. The coffee was okay- a bit steep (6.30) for my taste and quality. I think it was fine, nothing notable. I accidentally spilled my coffee putting on the lid and the barista was very kind and quick to help me clean up. Another pro is they have a wonderful amount of seating. As noted in previous reviews, the in-person ordering system can be a bit confusing since people kind of stand everywhere, but the staff is always very helpful and accommodating! I ordered the iced mint mojito, creamy, light sugar, light ice. I usually don't like mint-flavored foods, but this coffee was the best cup I've had in a long while, mostly because of how refreshing the drink is with the fresh mint taste. The cream also makes a huge difference in making the texture of the drink super smooth. I appreciate that a huge clump of mint was shoved into the cup along with the coffee, not just a few sad leaves. Always a packed Philz location with a handful of people standing outside waiting to pick up their orders; however, they have a really good system where you order ahead of the time on their app and when it's ready, you pick it up at the front. I have ordered multiple times through their app and it's a breeze. Very customizable options that make ordering very convenient. I give them 5 stars because every time I get there, someone will come out immediately to ask me for my name. I have never waited longer than a few seconds to be served which is great when you're trying to get in and out. Coffee was always made perfectly and as expected for Philz. Recommend this area! After visiting the USCD library, I stopped by Philz for an evening coffee run. The menu features unique coffee blends as well as themed collections. After much deliberation, we settled on the Mocha Tesora and the Philtered Soul. This business serves drip coffee with extra tastes based on the blends or collection. The Mocha Tesora was a drip coffee that had been mildly sweetened with cocoa, whilst the Philtered Soul was a hazelnut combination. The coffee is pricey ($5.50 for a large), but it tastes great, and the mixes and collections have a great coffee flavor without being overly sweet or cloying. I'm not a huge fan of Philz Coffee in general. I was born and raised in the SF Bay Area and I remember when Philz first came onto the scene, everyone was raving about the mojito coffee. My best friend took me to the one on Van Ness in SF so that I could try it and I didn't like the mojito at all. If you don't like real mojitos you won't like the coffee mint mojito. I never went back to Philz after my first visit several years ago. I only visited this new Philz in La Jolla because I was meeting up with a friend on Saturday. I thought I might as well give it another chance. You order up with the line of baristas first then you make your way down the end to pay. I hadn't been to a Philz in a long time so I was asking a few questions about the menu but the barista was kinda sassy and rude about answering. The barista didn't look happy to be working there. I ended up getting a mocha tesora which I think is a better choice than the mint mojito. Based on the drink, it wasn't too bad and I wouldn't mind ordering it again, but when the barista was handing me my drink they were rude about it and just rolled their eyes.
