We came here late night and our food was quick and delicious! The broth is light and flavorful without being oily. They put plenty of meat too. Unsure if it's because of COVID times, but they also gave us the option of a free drink with each bowl of pho, so we all got thai tea. The big huge Buddha is still there. ~The Surprise! I was surprised by the broth. It was actually ok. The veggies were abundant. They were not the freshest, but still ok. Cafe sua da was free and pretty good. My bill was a little over 5 bucks. Customer Service was great. The old guy, young guy, and the girl were all friendly and very talkative. ~The Heartbreak The meat was plentiful, but not very good (pho tai). It came out very, very red so I waited until it cooked a little in the broth. ~The Treasured I was the only one in this place. When I finished my pho, I was just relaxing with my coffee and could not help but remember all the fond memories of this place. This used to be "the spot" after going out. A definite Diamond in the rough! My family and I were traveling from Georgia and we are into authentic food, so we asked locals and came across this restaurant. You know it's not going to be a great review when the first thing you think of is another nearby restaurant. Pho Quang Trung is my go-to spot for pho on Westminster Blvd. near Brookhurst. It's very good. It was closed this morning for renovations, so after a bit of fumbling around, we ended up at Pho 54. It wasn't too busy, and we got seated right away. I had the pho xe lua for $6.50, which seems to be the going rate around here. Our orders came out after just a couple minutes, which really should be the standard for good pho. - Size: I've had larger. (That's what she said.) - Broth: Good. A quick tasting with and without a squeeze of lime showed me that lime would have destroyed the fairly subtle savory flavor. Pretty clean. I like it. - Noodles: Standard packaged stuff, but clumped together a bit more than I'm used to. Probably the same portion as a regular bowl, with the added meat being the size upgrade of the pho xe lua. Still, pretty much on par. - Meat: Here's where it fell apart. Tendon is tendon, and tripe is tripe, but there just wasn't enough flavor to any of the steak, flank, or brisket. I found myself desperately gulping broth at some points for umami, which I just don't have to do at any of my favorite pho spots anywhere. - Greens: Fresh and in a reasonable portion. I'm a bit of a Thai basil fiend, so I was pleased. The workers there are the hardest working people I've ever seen in my life! They are working hardly, not hardly working. This has been my go to place for twenty years. A few months ago, the manager, who is a cousin of the owner of all the pho 54 restaurants, bought out the cousin and now owns the restaurant with his wife. I noticed immediately that the restaurant went down hill. Although they began offering free drinks as an enticement, the soup bowls got much smaller, and the beef was much, much fattier. In fact, the meat became so bad that I could hardly eat it, so I began to order fish soup. I kept returning to the restaurant because I had been loyal for twenty years, but yesterday, I had the worst experience I have ever had in a restaurant. So, the new girl they hired came over to take my order. My dining partner was not hungry, so chose not to eat. First, I asked for extra bean sprouts with my soup, and the girl said they would charge me extra. Really, after twenty years? Then she told me that my dining partner could not get any water, and that they would only serve one water per guest that orders food. My dining partner then walked out of the restaurant. I approached the owner's wife, and asked her why they are now refusing to give water to guests. She had the meanest look on her face, and said, "Only one water per paying customers, and NO REFILLS!" I've been coming here since I was like 11 years old. In 10 years the only thing that's changed are the condiments on the table. The bullet holes in the glass are still there, the drone of the fans that constantly feed noise that this is one of the best holes in the wall ever. One of few or only place that I know that has authentic tasting pho which still gives dandelions with bean sprout, pepper, lime to put in the pho.
