It was an extremely hot day but I still downed the bowl of canh bun and probably could have eaten another one despite being satisfyingly filled after one bowl. The noodles were soft and smooth (not to be mistaken for mushy) and the tofu and crab were fluffy and decadent. The chicken pho here is really good-- maybe the best in San Jose. I've gone to two or three pho ga restaurants that specialize in chicken pho and this one has the most tender chicken meat! Pho Ga Hung = yet another very solid top notch Vietnamese noodle food court noodle soup restaurant that delivers the punch per dollar. So much to choose from, so little time. Canh Bun Rau Muong - this is essentially bun rieu, but with crab meatballs that are mixed in with egg. Rau Muong is like water spinach or kung xin tsai (Mandarin) which is either stir fried with garlic in Chinese restaurants, or fermented shrimp paste with chili pepper slivers at Canto joints. Also known as hollow stem vegetable that is normally done as belachan kakung in Malaysian restaurants. Pretty much everything was enjoyable about this bowl. The rice noodles are similar to Cantonese "lai fun", pretty much similar to the noodles served at the likes of Bun Bo Hue An Nam, and have a pretty decent slurp factor. The noodles come extremely hot, so take care in carrying the tray to your table, and enjoy slowly. The tomatoey broth is very interesting, as are the pieces of tofu inside. Crab meatballs are soft and tender, although not quite what I was expecting. But the whole bowl worked and was quite enjoyable. The most interesting part of the course is a side of some dark red purple pastey goo that spreads like butter. Upon closer inspection and taste, it's actually the pork blood gelee....and uber salty at that, perhaps mixed in with some shrimp paste to give it that extra fermented goodness flavor. It's probably better to use this as seasoning in your noodle soup, so use sparingly if you dare. You may have sampled pho and banh mi all around, and even perhaps dabbled in some bun bo hue....but if you want to experience some hardcore OG doe ma Vietnamese food at its rightful core that isn't mainstream douchetruckery, then come to Pho Ga Hung and savor in this goodness. Don't want pho or Canh Bun? Then go with the recommendations of Manda, Crystal, and the others who really know their V-food. RE$PECT. A little warning, have some water or your favorite beverage near you when you leave. In my never-ending quest for the best pho ga in San Jose, I took a chance on Pho Ga Hung, mostly based on the rave reviews from a few recent Yelpers. Unfortunately, the experience was wholly disappointing, leading me to question the taste and/or integrity of those Yelpers. Pho Ga Hung is located deep within Lion Plaza, surrounded by tired little shops. Where Lion Plaza was once a pan-Asian center, it's now devolved into a near authentic replica of Hanoi, according to people in the know. I compelled myself to step into the unappealing food court and was thoroughly overwhelmed by the unsettling ambiance. The harshly filtered light from the skylight clashed with cold florescent. I hardly heard a word of English amongst the small people milling about the food stands and competing for seats. Still, this was by far not my first experience having pho, so I was not dissuaded from trying. I ordered their pho ga #1 for $7, assuming that it would likely be their best representation. It came out a few minutes later on a tray in an average sized bowl. A few shriveled pieces of chicken innards floated about in the very pale broth. A plate of spouts and cup of tea accompanied. As usual, I combined everything into the soup to harness the entire range of flavors available. The pho tasted just like it looked, bland. The soup wasn't charged up with salt as others have mentioned, which is good, but flavor was lacking. The chicken bits were quite spare, only allowing a few tiny morsels of chicken meat to intervene. I finished up briskly since that seemed to be the only way to get any taste. Besides, I just felt uncomfortable the entire time, eating on a shaky white plastic table. I definitely won't be returning to this food court. I'd much rather pay up 75 cents more to get a full-flavored and satisfying bowl of pho ga from Kim Long. There, I get a generous portion of fully deboned hen meat along with other rich bits. Along with actual service, a pot of hot tea, and a more diverse crowd, it's not even a question to spend a few dollars more. read more

This is one of my favorite Vietnamese restaurants. Growing up in San Jose I was grateful to always have exposure to delicious Vietnamese food but the flavors at Pho Ga Hung are the best. I love going here for their Mien Ga and Canh Bun Rau Muong. I have been eating here for the past 29 years and the food never disappoints. I rate this place a 4.0. When I want pho ga, I come here for it. In fact, I like it so much I now only eat pho ga whenever I'm at a pho restaurant. It's just a healthier choice with the white chicken meat and the chicken broth just taste more crisp, clear and clean... if that makes any sense? haha. I love that they add lots of cilantro in the broth. In my opinion, there's enough chicken pieces in the pho (despite other reviews). I only get get the #1 Pho Ga Dac Biet (combo with more meat, it's a large bowl) or #2 just pho and chicken(small bowl, less meat). It's a pho ga joint, go with your gut and order just the chicken pho. When I get my pho, the first thing I do is try the broth and savor its taste before I add any condiments, lime, basil, sprouts, etc. Don't go overboard with the sauce and kill the broth. This joint is located in Lion plaza in the food court. Every restaurant in the food court are holes-in-the-wall joints. There's plenty of parking. Service is quick, cash only, service is friendly. The place is kinda ghetto but I love the Canh Bun w Rau Mung here. It's about $6.50 now. It used to only be $4.50 when I started going here. The family that owns that place always greets me with a smile. They're polite and remembers me everytime I come back. Be prepared to wait a little though, the line is long on weekends! My sister and I love this place so much everytime she comes down from Modesto we have to stop by to eat Bun Rieu and Canh Bun! The thing I like about this specific place is that it comes out steaming hot! Those other places aren't as good bc the waiter has to bring it to your table and by the time it gets there it 's not hot anymore. San Jose there are many places for Bun but Bun Moc you have to come to this so call "bird cage" to the Vietnamese community. Pho Hung has been around since the mid 80s and it is by far still the best place for Pho Ga and Bun Moc. Well Bun Moc is like well heck why don't you go and give it a try. You won't be disappointed. Can I just say, super awesome and great? Because it is. It's pho, and really anything can go wrong with pho. I've had pho everywhere and this place definitely ranks in my top 5. I usually order pho without meat (which is not on the menu, so a super plus to them for accommodating my wants) but I know their meat is fresh and not re-used from the soup. This place is honestly a diamond in the rough. It's great but not a lot of people realize that because it's in a small food court and in a place that really only vietnamese people go to. It doesn't get enough credit or publicity. The soup is never too salty and it's never bland. It's also a plus that they have very fresh mint and they give you all the vegetables that you could want. I had the pho ga dac biet here that came with chicken and gizzards galore. The pho noodles were a very good consistency and did not stick together. The noodles were soft but still had a nice bite to them; perfect. The broth needed a bit more salt for me, but most things do, so this was very nice. The chicken was very nice and not dry. I also like all the egg yolks and gizzards. :) Yum. Delicious place! Haven't tried any other dishes yet; this is a review strictly for the pho. Broth was flavorful and savory but in the perfect way. Neither overpowering nor bland. Noodles were prepared well and portion size was reasonable. Beef and meatballs (bo vien) were crazy. Pho Ga Hung is located in the ghetto Lion Plaza food court. I remember eating here several times when I was younger and I thought the Pho was terrible compared to other Pho places. Eventually, I picked up the taste and now I think it's pretty good! Their Pho has a very distinctive taste. Unlike most Pho places, their broth is not very flavorful. It's a very "clean" tasting soup. You have to acquire the taste for it. If you go in expecting a very flavorful Chicken broth, you will be disappointed. It's also one of the few places that still gives the egg in their Pho Ga. My mom said there was some fear of salmonella so places don't use those eggs now. Either way, the egg is frickin delicious now even more so because of its rarity. You can order the Pho Ga with the chicken organs. Delicious. The price is about the same as what you would get anywhere else. The pho ga isn't as great as pho ga an nam but if you want a quick bite go here.
