If you haven't noticed Pho Ketkeo yet, don't blame yourself. It's tucked away in the monstrosity that is the Temple Street Garage, past K2, in an unassuming little area that looks like it could be a laundromat. That's because the lighting is terrible. It's basically like eating at a laundromat. I think they also are BYOB/no liquor license, but I didn't ask. The ambiance is... a little stark, let's say. But you're not here for ambiance, you're here for Pho (pronounce it "Fuh" you heathen). While not quite Mechanoodle quality (what is?!), the Pho here is actually quite excellent. And unlike Mecha, they actually have more than one vegetarian option, which I really appreciate. They also provide some chili oil on the side, with a warning that it's very hot. I will repeat the warning: It's very hot. I don't know if my companion was impressed by how much I was sweating while eating my pho due to the deranged amount of chili oil put in there, but... we were the last customers of the night. this review is strictly based on their pho as i did not try anything else on their menu. their pho is so salty. and not in a good way. it didnt even taste like pho, it was just salt. we left their so thirsty and just a bad after taste. and the noodles they used got soggy after a minute pretty much so it was like mush... the service was good though. wait staff was nice. we were a little bothered that they were cleaning and mopping the floors right next to us as we were eating.. i get that its almost closing time, but how would you feel if you were eating and all you smell is detergent and windex? read more

Simply the best Thai food in town! As a college student, I'm always looking for affordable but wholesome and high quality food. I ordered a small vegetarian pho with basil, bean sprouts, and lime and a small original flavored bubble tea with coconut milk. It was all very delicious! The bubble tea was the best I had in a long time and wasn't too sweet. I was concerned that the small order of pho was not going to be large enough for my dinner, but it was huge! I couldn't even finish all of it. My only complaint is that I received one basil leaf. I ordered through Grubhub and read a few poor reviews regarding customer service beforehand, but I had an exception experience. A few reviewers mentioned that they did not receive utensils or even straws for their bubble tea and that drivers were very rude. Wow I've come here three times in the first week it was open. Definitely one of the better places to get pho in New Haven. + Pho Their pho has a lot of meat! However, the broth can be hit or miss. I've had really great broth there, I've also had broth that was a little too salty too. + Firecracker Shrimp I got this once. It was decent, but I figured I should probably just stick to pho. This had a lot of vegetables and shrimp, but wasn't really filling for me. + Mango Sticky Rice Yummy and warm and sweet. Great for your mango sticky rice cravings but a little bit on the expensive side. + Banh Xeo The Vietnamese crepe was pretty great too. Well-flavored and good portion. Definitely worth a try! I think I like their banh xeo more than pho and spice's. There is room for improvement, but I will definitely always be coming here for pho from now on. read more

A bunch of new Pho places have opened in New Haven in recent months. My officemates and I have tried them all a couple of times for lunch, and they all do a solid job. Today we came across this place, and it's hands down the best. Service = friendly and prompt. Broth = subtle, complex and light (and perfect for a spring day). Summer rolls = totally unique, well balanced with lots of vegetables, delicious pork slices, and great presentation. Banh Xeo = lots of slices of pork belly, nice crispy edges, yum. TERRIFIC food! New "go to" Thai (Laotian) place in New Haven! It's really more of a Thai restaurant with some Laotian dishes and a sprinkling of Vietnamese choices. Hopefully, they will increase the variety of the Laotian offerings. We had the Beef Laab and a Laotian soup with hand-made noodles they make daily. VERY impressed with the Laab flavorings (served with a side of sticky rice) and the soup broth was quite flavorful. Baan Khao was delicious!!! This restaurant has great potential and is quite authentic. They will thrive and hopefully, people will discover this little gem. The other Thai restaurants in the city pale in comparison. Forget Thai Taste with its rude servers or Rice Pot which has truly gone downhill or Bangkok Gardens which has well passed its prime. UPDATE: Mango and Sweet Rice was very good but only provide a small portion of mangos. Custard and Black Rice was flavorless - not enough coconut milk. The Drunken Noodles was not as " flavorful" as it could have been. It had too much soy and not enough basil/garlic/hot pepper mixture. read more

Passed by this place the last time I was in New Haven, but didn't feel brave enough to walk inside. From the outside, it doesn't look very inviting. A bit dark, the windows a bit dirty. This time, I'm in town with a friend and after walking to and from work in the cold, with chilling wind, nothing sounded better than pho! Inside was fairly small and the smell of the restaurant wasn't too pleasant (at least to me). We were seated immediately, no wait around 1pm on a Thursday. Extensive menu. Everything from curry to pho to fried rice. I settled on the meatballs and sliced steak pho; my friend got the sliced steak pho. We also ordered chicken wings, strawberry boba, and passion fruit boba. Wow, the broth was so amazing and so delicious. Literally could've had bowls after bowls of broth all day. It was that amazing. I didn't care for the sliced steak so much, had a weird taste/smell to them. Meatballs were pretty good. Boba was rock-solid, but the passion fruit tea was pretty good. Chicken wings were also crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. I'm definitely happy we ate lunch here. Now I have another spot to eat at when I come back to New Haven for business again! read more

Ordered takeout Monday. They're website says they're open continuously but to turns out they take a break from 3-5 in between lunch and dinner shifts. I called 20 to 5 and had to convince them to take my order. I ordered two mediums sized Sliced steak pho and the beef Larb appetizer. I waited until a 10 after 5 to pick it up and there was already another customer there with an order of pho. It made my early call seem hypocritical. The pho itself was alright; I've had better. It was mostly beef broth with a lot of onion flavor. I've never had pho that had so much onion in it. There also wasn't a lot of meat. This made it seem overpriced. The Larb also came with some sticky rice which I love. I noticed that this dish had tripe in it. This was not listed in the menu and came as a surprise. I picked it out and ate the rest. This was my first time trying Pho Ketkeo and I am a fan! I can't comment on the inside of the restaurant since I got my dinner delivered. The portions are H U G E! I ordered the tofu Pad Thai and the fresh rolls. The fresh rolls were very tasty, and well, fresh! All the veggies were super crisp and the peanut dipping sauce was a great compliment. The Pad Thai was really tasty and I can't wrap my mind around how much food it is! I will seriously have four meals from one order. Had the steak strip pho here and it was fantastic! The broth was rich and complex, and the beef was very flavorful. Decor is really awful. But the atmosphere was extremely comfortable and staff was friendly. Extremely fast service. The "soy beverage" (sweetened, creamy soymilk) was also delicious, despite the silly name and uninspiring can it came in. I think my expectations were unrealistically high, having recently moved from southern California --- home to a huge Vietnamese-American community, but the pho at Pho Ketkeo is not real Viet pho to me. The broth has a different and oilier taste, which I am personally not a huge fan of. However, if you simply want Asian noodle soup, the pho here is decent. The portions are pretty large, the price is fair, and they come with all the usual veggie garnishes. Given the lack of pho restaurants in the area, this is a good option to consider when you have those stress- or hangover-induced cravings. read more

Unfortunately, the broth lacks depth and flavor, the meat is not good quality and the space is just not welcoming -- it felt like a cafeteria. Let me start by saying that I enjoyed my pineapple fried rice - after I picked out the four (only four?) chunks of absolutely rotten pineapple (enough, I think, to warrant a one star review, but mistakes happen) and whole onion's worth of undercooked slices from my meal. My qualm with Pho Ketkeo came from the dirty glasses on the table, the lackluster service, and the fact that the four people sitting at my table (one check) received their meals at different times over a period of 45 minutes. Drinks came out after two of the meals had been placed on the table. The flavor of the food was adequate, and the prices were very reasonable. another yelper in NH recommended that we check out Pho Ketkeo for their pho; even though we came for the pho--which we thought was average especially for the price--we are so glad we came because I am a HUGE fan of their DRUNKEN NOODLES with beef! I love flavor and the drunken noodles was just so delicious with so many bursts of flavor. An amazing little find! We stayed at the New Haven Hotel right around the corner and had lunch here two days in a row--that's how good it was. Pho was delicious--we made the mistake of only ordering one bowl (cauldron-sized) the first time around and the kids were fighting us for it. Waterfall salad and Lao style fried rice were both amazingly flavorful as well. Being Chinese I nearly never order fried rice but we got this thinking the kids would like it and I basically ate all of it, it was that good. Massaman curry was fine but not as much of a standout and a smaller portion as well. The location is central but not particularly prepossessing-tucked under an overpass, but the interior is clean and comfortable, with pleasant decor. Service is decent - both times it seemed like only one person was working the entire place so I could see it getting backed up if the place was totally full. Prices are reasonable as well, especially with the generous portion sizes. In a town known more for pizza (oops, I mean, apizza) this made for a really delicious change of pace for the weekend. Would eat here probably every week if I could somehow transport it home with me. read more

My friend and I ate there about a month ago, had an all laotian dinner. Papaya salad, Lao sausages and the special pork stew. Food was fantastic, loved every bite. The salad was spicy and vinegary, the grilled sausages were savory, and the pork was just the right amount of sweet, perfect in the mix. This is by far the best pho place in New Haven. I work within walking distance of another pho place but we order uber eats for Pho Ketkeo instead. My favorite is the beef and meatballs. It is awesome to have an authentic Lao restaurant in New Haven! This is my first experience with Lao cuisine and I can definitely say that I am hooked. I have had their pho on several occasions and have been more than pleased every time. Aside from the pho, I have had several dishes that I have never had before. The Banh Xeo is tasty and a great portion size. The summer rolls and spring rolls are great. The chicken satay is amazing! It falls of the stick. The Kow Mun Gai is a dish that I have never had before. So rich and tasty! Their bubble tea has been outstanding every time I have had it! The bubbles are perfectly done.
