I usually try to provide the pros with the cons when reviewing a restaurant, but I was really hard-pressed to find the pros to this place. The service was snail-paced, despite the lack of patrons, and the attitudes from the two female servers were a mix of ennui and eye-rolling. I ordered the pho with "the works" but ended up with a bowl that was mostly bland broth with a couple chewy meat bits and sprinkles of onion, cilantro, and scallions floating in it. Btw, I asked for no scallions, but they put it in anyway because hey, why not? They were also very stingy with the accompanying basil leaf and bean sprout. Yup, the singular was on purpose. I always tip about 20% at any restaurant I eat at, but I just couldn't do it here and respect myself in the morning. read more

I know it's impossible to make foods that are not Americanized at all in US, and I don't really mind either. However, that doesn't mean foods need to be really salty and sweet. I had a pho and Laotian fried rice at this restaurant. As soon as I tasted them, I was sad that they are not authentic at all and quite salty as well, although they have really good reviews. Also I tasted quite amount of msg in them, and because I am sensitive at Msg, I had a hard time after eating them, even though I didn't even finish small portion. This restaurant is delicious. My husband and I dined there this past month, and loved it so much that we brought friends there a second time last week. The first time I wasn't in the mood for pho so I ordered the drunken noodles. The dish was incredible--just enough spice, and I was overwhelmed (in a good way) with the flavors of the dish. The second time I ordered the pho and was not disappointed. I am a regular of pho restaurants, so knew what to except. This pho was actually better than any pho I have had in the past. It tasted a little different that I am used to, and I loved it! I didn't find the need to add extra lime, sriracha, or plum sauce to the dish, as the flavors were amazing on their own. This is the place that I'm always craving and I keep coming back over and over. My favorite items are things that are hard to find elsewhere, even in a city with as many restaurants as New Haven. I find myself repeatedly ordering the khao mun gai (chicken rice, protip: ask for thigh), nam khao (laoatian sausage and crumbled sticky rice salad), chicken laap, and the fried wings (when eaten with the accompanying sauce I think these are the best in New Haven). I have not actually tried the eponymous pho here but those I have dined with said it was good. read more

Besides being my go to phó spot, the chef specials are fantastic. Fragrant well balanced spices that you don't see anywhere else. Can't speak highly enough about the Laotian sausage and sticky rice. I had such a positive experience here on Friday night. My friend and I arrived right around 9pm and they were both happy to have us and still semi-full, so we didn't feel like we were there too late or rushed. We stared with a fried shrimp roll app thing, and it was fresh and delicious. Next, we both had the Pho with beef. It was delicious. The soup was super hot (which I love) and that meant my soup stayed warm the entire time I was eating it. The pho is accompanied by fresh bean sprouts, Thai basil and limes that you add at your own will. This was one of my favorite parts. The ingredients were fresh and yummy and only added to my overall enjoyment. I added a little too much chili oil to my soup, be careful that stuff is spicy! Ordered takeout and got the small order of sliced steak pho. The portion size was huge and the broth was savory with a perfect amount of spice. Only thing was I wish the steak was a little more on the rare side as it was overcooked. I still really enjoyed it and would order again. Also I got the Thai bubble tea and it was great! I heard about Pho Ketkeo from a few friends the first week it opened and even though there's the word pho in the name, I expected it not to be a Viet place because the word "Ketkeo" isn't even Viet. Thus, as I'll be reviewing their Laotian food. The two servers were so friendly and helped my friend and I decide on which items to try. I tried the Nam Khao (curried rice salad) and it was fantastic. There was a lot of flavor and it was spicy - it's a winner in my book, and my friend liked mine so much he got it again later. My friend had the Kow Mun Gai (poached ginger) and on its own it wasn't that flavorful, especially if one expects it to be a Chinese style chicken, but I poured their sauce all over the dish - really saturating everything, and BAM, it was quite yummy. The pork larb was the best I've had since I was in Vientiane - and I live in New York, where plenty of Northern Thai restaurants serve larb. Today, I had the Nam Khao, a crispy curried rice salad, and it was excellent--nicely crispy with flavorful sausage, herbs, and peanuts. The bubble tea was also a bit stronger than it was the last time, so that was a welcome change (it was fine the first time, but even better today). I do wish my meal and my companion's had come out at the same time (it was a solid five minute lag, even though mine was a warm, not hot, salad, and they could have held it until both were ready), but that's my only complaint. The food has a slight variation to the regular Vietnamese, most likely you won't even notice. The portion size is massive, so be prepared to be stuffed or have leftovers. The food is very tasty and will absolutely come back the next time I am in the area and looking for pho. Had delivery from here and it was solid. Used UberEats which worked fantastically and was much cheaper than many other outsourced delivery options. I didn't have the Pho so will definitely need to return for that. I'm a tough Thai critic and have some local favorites. The Pad Thai, Massaman Curry, and Crab Rangoon were all very tasty. The Drunken noodle was good but only ok in comparison to my favorites. I didn't like the taste of the spring rolls and there wasn't much in them. I must say that the meal was extremely cost-effective. We got a ton for our money and there's something to be said for that especially with outsourced delivery services. I would certainly order from here again but it won't replace Thai Awesome and Bangkok Boulevard for my go-to Thai. I know for sure I will use UberEats again (and no I don't work for them). read more

Definitely a gem in this gourmet desert. Lao style restaurant mixed with choices from other southeast areas. Pho, fried rice, rice rolls are tasty, come in good portion and reasonable price. I would have gave this place a 4 star if my pho didn't come out 15 mins after we finish our 2 appetizers. Also asked for a side of rice that we never got and the server never came to refill our water. (I still gave her a good tip though) I honestly wouldn't be that upset about the whole pho thing if the table that came in after us and had order after us got their pho first. The food here is good. But overall this place was a disappointment. First we tell them we need two separate checks which they say is no problem and they proceed to take two separate orders. Ten minutes later they come and tell us they can't separate the orders in the computer. Ok well enter two separate orders like you took. Then right before our food comes out they come and tell us they are out of the duck and the two orders with it need to pick something else. My one son ended up getting nothing because he couldn't figure out something else on the spot and my other son had to sit and watch us all eat while he waited for his food. I get that sometimes places run out of product but they waited until right before the food came out to tell us. Then the food that was ready came out all at different times to the point that some people were completely finished before some even got their food. Phone is left off the hook for long periods, if you get through they will put you on hold and forget about you, or they just dont answer the phone. I live across the street and often have to walk across the street to order, come home, and then go back to pick up food. Absolutely amazing. My family enjoyed their food as did I. We will definitely frequent this place more often. The summer rolls were fresh and the peanut sauce is out of this world. I've managed to try a few different pho and I must say that my favoriteis the beef with tendons. It had so much flavor. Much better than other places I've tried. I have to say, I am disappointed to give this place one star. Considering this is a Laotian restaurant and I am Lao, the food was pretty good. However, the staff was extremely rude. Upon seating my group of four, our waitress took two out of four silverware sets away. Not a big deal. It was unclear who our server was because no one introduced themselves and a different person approached the table every time. We ordered appetizers and had to ask for new plates because our plates were filthy with grease and black spots that I was able to smudge with a paper towel. We requested new plates very nicely and the waitress took the plates without even apologizing for the fact that they were dirty. We waited for new plates and had to ask one of the waitresses for our plates again because she never returned. Mind you, at this time, we were the only people in the restaurant so it wasn't busy at all. Then, our entrees came out and of course, we had to ask for the silverware the original waitress took away. Now, when entrees are delivered, it is to my understanding that the waiter/waitress clears the table from the appetizers. However, this was not the case here. Instead, the waitress was shoving the entree dishes on the table which were hitting the appetizer dishes and causing them to "make room on the table," even though we had so nicely stacked them for her. So rather than making room by taking back the unused dishes, she pushed them around and left them there. When the final entree came out, I had to ask the waitress to take back the appetizer dishes in which she just grabbed them and didn't say one word. Not one person asked us how the food was or if we needed refills on our drinks. Then, while we still had our entrees, one of the waitresses brought out the check and never asked us if we wanted dessert. When she placed the check on the table, we let her know that we were not yet finished and wanted to order dessert. The waitresses response was, "Oh. What did you want?" So, we ordered four desserts to share amongst the four of us and had to ask for dessert plates. While we waited for the plates, I walked to the restroom and overheard the two girls complaining at the fact that we asked for plates for the desserts and then said "oh well. They need to wait." This is the first time in my life that I have ever not left a tip. Had I not heard that comment, I still would have left a tip because I understand the stressors of a restaurant business. However, considering the restaurant wasn't busy, how rude both waitresses were, the comments they made when they thought no one could hear, the lack of apology when letting them know the dishes were filthy, and the overall lack of professionalism, I absolutely did not leave a tip. I enjoyed the food but unfortunately, I will not be returning and the poorly trained staff can be thanked for that. I'm pretty low maintenance when I go to a restaurant. I expect clean dishes and I don't even care if I have to ask for anything additional. I expect refills on drinks, asked one time how my food is, and offered dessert. I literally do not care if other than that, the waitress never comes over to me again. However, this service is just horrendous here and this restaurant should be embarrassed. read more
